Message from CEO and Board ChairDuring her recent visit to WFYI, Margaret Low Smith, NPR’s Senior Vice President of News, reminded us that public media “takes audiences places they cannot go themselves and introduces them to people they might never meet.” We at WFYI couldn’t agree more.

We hear every day from Central Indiana residents who write to say how a particular program or service of WFYI Public Media changed their perspectives, even their lives…such as this comment from a member from Kirklin: “Thank you for helping to shape my development as a person, as a resident and steward of planet Earth, as a lifelong learner, an appreciator of the arts, a cook, a homeowner, an automobile driver, a gardener, and an informed citizen of this great nation.”

That is what you do for people in Central Indiana when you support the work we do. Thank you! For WFYI Public Media to remain relevant in this rapidly evolving digital era, we must continue to grow as well. Your support has kept us doing just that.

This past year, our WFYI production team created relevant programs that addressed timely concerns in our own community. Both WFYI’s television production unit and radio news team won prestigious awards from experts in the broadcasting field this year, and a number of our local productions were chosen for national distribution.

Through your support, WFYI Public Media amplified our impact well beyond traditional broadcasting. We expanded our groundbreaking efforts with the American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen initiative, inspiring advocacy to improve state high school graduation rates. And in collaboration with community partners, WFYI focused its resources on the key areas of education, health, the arts and news/public affairs.

Through our many avenues into the community – broadcasting, social media, public forums and special events – we work to improve the lives of Central Indiana residents. And just as Low Smith said, WFYI Public Media does, indeed, take people to new places. And you – our individual members, volunteers, corporate sponsors and community partners -- are the fuel that keeps the vitality of public media in Central Indiana alive.

Investment in community underpins all that we do at WFYI. “WFYI is more than just great radio and television programming. The station is a wonderful community partner that provides services and outreach efforts that greatly enhance the lives of Central Indiana residents,” notes one WFYI member in Indianapolis.

It’s true that through forums, community conversations, opportunities for lifelong enrichment and more, people discover WFYI’s deep roots in the community beyond our airwaves.

Education is a core focus of WFYI, and through the public media initiative, American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, we continued our efforts this year to address the high school dropout crisis. Through our Conversations About Education series, teacher town halls, radio and television broadcasts, online resources and vital community partnerships, WFYI raised awareness and encouraged action to help our youth become successful adults.

Many teachers would not have access to quality educational resources with-out the free digital assets available through PBS Learning Media. More than 9,000 educators used tens of thousands of these resources to bolster their curriculum, and PBS TeacherLine provided Indiana educators online professional development to maintain certification and improve student outcomes.

While education is a core focus of WFYI, so is health. This past summer, we launched a partnership with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation on a two-pronged wellness initiative to encourage everyday changes and healthy habits for children (5-2-1-0 Countdown to Health) and women (Happy, Healthy Hearts).

Striving to “amplify the voices” in our community, WFYI’s partnership with IndyTalks helped thousands of people participate in civic dialogue around locally relevant topics in education, livability and civil society. As co-founder of this vital community initiative, WFYI remains an active participant in these talks.

Another way WFYI deepens its community partnerships is through Indianapolis’ annual Spirit and Place Festival. Participants in our Spirited Chase discover oft-hidden gems of the city and learn about the broad range of experiences available throughout Indianapolis. WFYI’s 5th annual event sold out with 150 participants, and also won a $2,500 cash prize for how well the event matched the festival’s theme of Risk. WFYI also broadcasts the Public Conversation and a series of themed essays on 90.1 FM.

Public Television

Viewers across Central Indiana tell us they turn to WFYI for diverse and stimulating television. “WFYI is just about all I watch on the weekends because there is no other station with anything even remotely interesting!” says a viewer from Indianapolis. “Thank you for enriching my mind week after week with your variety and honesty.”

On our three distinct television services -- WFYI 1 (HD 20.1), WFYI 2 (DT 20.2) and WFYI 3 (DT 20.3) – viewers tuned in for enriching programs that make us think differently about ourselves and our world. Whether the topic was the 1913 Great Flood, financial abuse of seniors, or the story of former Indiana Pacer Roger Brown, viewers watched programming that informed, inspired and enlightened.

One of WFYI’s most celebrated documentaries this past year, Undefeated: The Roger Brown Story, received enormous viewer feedback with comments such as “That was, by far, the best documentary I’ve ever watched. Makes me sad I didn’t know his story sooner.” And another viewer found the program

so compelling he couldn’t even sit down to watch: “At some point about halfway in I found myself standing up, and I stood for the rest of the program because I just couldn’t go back into my chair. Amazing, fantastic and special.”

WFYI’s production team also leveraged vital community partnerships to produce such acclaimed local series as The Art of the Matter, previously only on radio, and now, a television favorite too, Indiana Expeditions with Rick Crosslin, Indiana Lawmakers, Indiana Week in Review and Inside Indiana Business with Gerry Dick.

Viewers weren’t the only ones impressed by these high-caliber productions. So were professionals in the broadcasting industry. This year, WFYI productions were recognized with 19 Emmy nominations, and nine regional Emmys for outstanding documentaries and programs, including the prestigious “Station of Excellence” award. Six of our local documentaries were placed into national distribution, raising WFYI’s profile nationally as a producer of high-quality programming.

“WFYI helps to keep my mind open to the possibilities of daily life,” said a listener from Edinburgh. “By listening every day I learn something new and significant, regardless if I agree with it or not.”

Listener loyalty is what has earned WFYI Public Radio the distinction of “Best Radio Station in Indianapolis” for the third year in a row by the readers of NUVO. Additionally, our talented staff earned top honors from broadcast industry peers with prestigious Indiana Broadcast Association’s Spectrum Awards for “Best Cultural Affairs Programming” and “Best Newscast,” as well as other significant awards throughout the year.

Perhaps the best honor is when members, like this mom from Plainfied, write to tell us how WFYI is making a difference in their lives:

“My high school son and I like sharing information and discussing events…Every Friday after school, he quizzes me on his current events test questions. I usually give him the right answers, and after a couple of weeks, he asked me how I knew the answers. From NPR, I told him. He didn’t know what NPR was, so I gave him the information needed. The next time I got into his car, as soon as he turned the key in the ignition, instead of the noisy music I always hear, on came an NPR program. I have to tell you that I was thrilled and since then, we share the NPR programs that we listen to. Thank you for hooking my teenage son to your great, informative station.”

Thanks to partnerships with Franklin College and Wabash College, more listeners can tune into WFYI throughout Central Indiana. WFYI provides NPR, PRI and BBC programming to these student-run stations.

Whether in their cars, home or office, more than 130,000 listeners turn to 90.1’s two distinct radio services (90.1 FM HD1; or 90.1 FM HD2, The Point) each week, where they find a mix of programming, not only from NPR, PRI and BBC, but from WFYI’s local productions such as Indiana Week in Review, Indiana Lawmakers, No Limits, The Art of the Matter, Sound Medicine, The Blues House Party, Stolen Moments, Film Soceyology, Oldies School and The Cool Down. This year, 90.1’s award-winning, public-affairs series, No Limits, began airing twice weekly and increased distribution into additional Indiana cities.

Imagine not being able to read the newspaper or other written sources of news and information. Perhaps, you are visually impaired, physically challenged or possess learning disabilities. For more than 800 print-challenged residents of Central Indiana, the Indiana Reading and Information Service (IRIS) is a lifeline that keeps them connected to the printed world 24-hours a day.

“My husband loves your service,” writes the spouse of one listener. “He listens every day, and I don’t know what he would do without it.”

IRIS relies on the more than 120 volunteers who read on air everything from newspapers and magazines to store sales fliers and literary novels. Through custom-built radio receivers provided free of charge, certified listeners can reach the radio broadcast 45 miles beyond Indianapolis. The IRIS service is also available on demand through wfyi.org.

Interactive MediaWFYI’s website broadens the station’s reach, connecting people to local television production and live radio feeds well beyond Central Indiana. Along with providing users with a regional resource for on-the-go news and information, wfyi.org connects people in unexpected ways too. Such is the case for one college student who wrote to tell us that “WFYI soothed my homesickness,” while a college professor found that “streaming NPR stories in the classroom is an interesting way of encouraging discussions.”

Regardless of the reasons, when one visits wfyi.org, he or she will discover the newly improved website,

which debuted November 1, 2013, provides more robust news coverage, rich educational resources, access to WFYI’s award-winning programs, resources from NPR and PBS, live social media streams and more. The website, which optimizes to fit any electronic device, also offers a growing library of podcasts and a live radio stream accessible from anywhere in the world.

WFYI continues to grow its presence on social media. Users of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest and Flickr can now directly engage with WFYI and our website, growing the station’s online presence and reach.

Community Events

Thousands of people discover WFYI through our community events.WFYI’s PBS KIDS in the Park, presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, is WFYI’s most popular event and draws tens of thousands of children and their families. While the meet-and-greets with PBS KIDS characters are the big draw, families also come because they trust the child-friendly entertainment and learning activities. The festival turned 20 in 2013, and continues to demonstrate WFYI’s steadfast commitment to early childhood education.

While PBS KIDS in the Park is all about families, WFYI’s annual Ice Miller Wine Fest is the party for wine and public media connoisseurs. This elegant evening brought 1,000 wine enthusiasts and novices together last March, to explore the many varieties of local, regional and international wines and to benefit WFYI. The event offers a fun complement to WFYI’s award-winning cooking and wine programs featured on WFYI 3’s Create schedule.

Sometimes WFYI supporters just want to cut loose on the golf course. This past summer, our third annual Golf Scramble, presented by Faegre Baker Daniels, brought together all levels of golfers for a fun day on the links, raising financial support and awareness for the station.


For the past 16 years, WFYI has been committed to women’s health and wellness by hosting Women, Wisdom & Wellness, presented by St.Vincent Women’s Services and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Through workshops, engaging speakers and informative resource booths, attendees learned ways to improve and maintain physical, emotional and financial health.

What would late summer be without the annual Penrod Arts Fair at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, launching the new arts season? As a significant player in the Indianapolis arts scene, WFYI was there also, broadcasting live our popular arts program, The Art of the Matter. The live broadcast was presented by Katz & Korin PC.

VolunteersWFYI relies heavily on the efforts of dedicated volunteers to augment our reach into the community. Our volunteers wear many hats – sometimes they even wear colorful, oversized ones, as they “become” PBS KIDS walk-around characters!

Volunteer Cathy Wait, who donned the Sid the Science Kid costume at an event this past year, paints a vivid picture of her experience:

“Sid the Science Kid was standing there, larger than life, in front of the little girl! She was wide-eyed with wonder, thrilled with excitement and yet, frozen in her tracks with fear. I knew she needed a little coaxing to come forward to meet Sid so I knelt down and threw my arms open. Without thinking she threw her arms open and ran into mine. She looked up with wonder and joy and then held hands with Sid with the happiest of smiles on her face. Thanks WFYI,” Cathy said.

Cathy’s personal experience underscores the many reasons why more than 1,400 volunteers donated 16,400 hours of their time last year to WFYI. Not all volunteer projects are this much fun -- sometimes, the work is more routine, such as folding letters and stuffing envelopes. But none are more dedicated than WFYI’s volunteers, who fill in wherever an extra hand is needed to keep WFYI running smoothly. These volunteers whose donated time last year was worth some $359,317 are truly the critical backbone of support to this station. Thank you!

WFYI’s headquarters in the heart of downtown Indianapolis is now an innovative green space too. This past April, WFYI installed a 5,300-square-foot green roof above its television studios. This garden acts as an innovative sound-proofing system for WFYI’s television studios, as well as a meadow habitat for wildflowers, butterflies, bees and other insects. The green roof also prevents storm water overflow, decreases noise pollution, and reduces air conditioning usage in summer.

At ground level, visitors will notice lush new landscaping and vibrant LED lighting displays and signage, thanks to a grant from the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation and in-kind support from Techlite.
