As we reflect on the past year of service to the Central Indiana community, we would like to take a moment to thank you for your commitment to WFYI Public Media in 2010. Your contributions of time and treasure are the foundation of our efforts to amplify the voice of Central Indiana. They not only make the outstanding television and radio programming possible, they strengthen our community by allowing WFYI to deliver the outreach and learning services only public service media can deliver.

Thanks to the generosity of individual members, volunteers, corporate sponsors and community partners, WFYI has been able to sustain its high level of service to the community, despite these challenging economic times. Here are just a few examples of what we achieved together in 2010.

This past year, WFYI continued to produce quality local television programming, earning three regional Emmy Awards and 11 awards from the Indianapolis chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. On the radio, Hoosiers were kept informed by a

news team that earned two Spectrum Awards from the Indiana Broadcasters Association and nine awards from the Indianapolis chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Your support also reaches beyond the radio and television programs and directly into the lives of residents across the state. WFYI collaborated with 11 other organizations to create the IndyTalks initiative, encouraging civic dialogue about Indiana’s future. WFYI’s outreach department also encouraged conversations about sustainability, livability and infrastructure through Blueprint Central Indiana. And, Indiana Reading and Information Services continued to serve as an around-the-clock communications link for Hoosiers who are reading impaired by providing readings of local and national periodicals, and selected books.

WfYI PuBLIC TELEVISIoN

WFYI broadcasts quality entertainment, public affairs and educational television exclusively on three digital channels – WFYI 1 (HD 20.1), WFYI 2 (DT 20.2) and WFYI 3 (DT 20.3).

WFYI 1 is the main service. Here’s where you’ll find PBS KIDS programs in the daytime, plus news, public affairs, documentaries, British comedies, how-to programs and more.

WFYI 2 provides V-me (pronounced veh-meh), a Spanish language service with many public television favorites and much more.

WFYI 3 features great how-to programs during most of the day and local and national productions from 8 pm to midnight. During the overnight hours, you’ll find The Classic Arts Showcase .

In 2010, WFYI’s local productions collected three Regional Emmy Awards along with honors from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Local ProductionsAcross Indiana celebrated a major milestone in May of 2010. For 20 years, the show has put the spotlight on the Hoosier state’s rural heritage and quirky characters.

Host Michael Atwood and the crew have uncovered prehistoric geodes in Millport, donned bubble-wrap underwear in Indianapolis, eaten brain sandwiches in Evansville, listened to wise “Porch Talks” from Phillip Gulley, barrel-rolled with human cannonballs in Peru and – in the show’s most legendary segment – climbed the highest point in Indiana (which, by the way, is as flat as a pancake).

Among the local documentaries created in 2010 was Full Circle: The Life and Times of Edgar Whitcomb. The program chronicled the remarkable life of Indiana’s 43rd governor, from his escape out of the Philippines during World War II to his political career to his sailing solo around the world to his now quiet life along the Ohio River in the small town of Rome, Indiana.

As a public service media provider, WFYI also tackled local issues surrounding sustainability, livability and infrastructure. Drop by Drop: Protecting Indiana’s Water Supply explored the state’s water infrastructure. Lead Paint: Indiana’s Poisoned Children investigated the dangers of lead paint and highlighted steps that can be taken to make the environment safe for children.

That service is complimented by 90.1 FM HD2 – The Point, which delivers entertaining and informative public radio talk programs like Talk of the Nation, Le Show and The Sound of Young America. It also includes a variety of local programs like Film Soceyology, Old School and Velvet Escape .

In 2010, WFYI welcomed the new local public affairs program No Limits to the 90.1 FM HD1 lineup. Hosted by John Krull, director of Franklin College’s Pulliam School of Journalism, the call-in program focuses on news stories of the week and hot topics of concern to Central Indiana residents.

WFYI reaches listeners beyond Marion County through its partnerships with Franklin College, in Johnson County, and Wabash College, in Montgomery County. WFYI provides NPR, PRI and BBC programming on the student-run radio stations. The simulcast agreements allow WFYI to reach listeners throughout Marion County and much of Bartholomew, Hendricks, Johnson and Montgomery counties.

WFYI Public Radio provided quality local and national public affairs, arts and news programs in 2010, while continuing its commitment to provide state and local news.

News coverage on 90.1 FM HD1 earned nine Society of Professional Journalists awards in 2010. The award-winning news team kept Hoosiers informed about happenings at the Statehouse, the midterm elections, local issues surrounding sustainability, livability and infrastructure and much more.

WFYI Public Radio broadcasts two distinct services on three channels. WFYI’s main service on 90.1 FM HD1 offers a mix of national and local arts and public affairs programs like Indiana Week in Review, Indiana Lawmakers, The Art of the Matter, The Blues House Party and Sound Medicine – a partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine. The service is simulcast on the analog signal (90.1 FM) and the HD channel (90.1 FM HD1).

Public broadcasting is unique in its public service mission, and WFYI’s community outreach and learning services department sets it apart from other broadcasters. The department’s efforts complement radio and television programming through community workshops, forums, training opportunities and educational outreach.

The outreach efforts provide a forum for dialogue in the Central Indiana community. Throughout the year, residents were engaged in conversations about sustainability, livability and infrastructure in Indiana.

WFYI collaborated with 11 other organizations for the IndyTalks initiative, encouraging civic dialogue about Indiana’s future through events and discussions held around Indianapolis throughout the year. WFYI Public Radio kicked off the series during a live interview with Richard C. Longworth, author of Caught in the Middle: America’s Heartland in the Age of Globalism .

WFYI’s outreach department also encouraged conversations about sustainability, livability and infrastructure through Blueprint Central Indiana. The efforts contributed to discussions related to the Indiana Humanities Council’s Food for Thought series through special radio reports.

LEArNINg SErVICES / ouTrEACh

The Spirited Chase returned to WFYI in 2010 with the theme of hospitality. The partnership with the Spirit and Place Festival was another huge success with nearly 250 participants exploring hospitality and gifts of the heart and hands at seven locations around Indianapolis.

WFYI continued to provide Indiana educators with online professional development through PBS TeacherLine. The convenient online courses are one way teachers and schools can earn credits to maintain their certification an improve student performance.

In addition to its workshops throughout the year, WFYI also sponsored the PBS KIDS Go! Writers Contest. More than 200 young authors and artists in grades K-3 submitted illustrated stories. The winners for each grade level were recognized onstage during the opening ceremonies of Let’s Meet PBS KIDS in the Park .

oNLINE SErVICES

WFYI’s online services provide an interactive experience to complement many local and national broadcasts on television and radio.

From January through October 2010, nearly 250,000 unique visitors (those coming to the Web site for the first time) clicked to wfyi.org. In all, the Web site had 450,000 visits during the first nine months of 2010.

On the site, visitors can search schedules for each of WFYI’s television and radio services. The Web site also delivers information about WFYI’s special events, upcoming volunteer opportunities and professional development for Hoosier educators at PBS TeacherLine.

Viewers and listeners have also been encouraged to access wfyi.org for additional resources related to local productions – like bonus video and the teacher toolkit available for Indiana Expeditions with Rick Crosslin. It has also been used as a tool for building community through the sharing of photos and reflections. This year, visitors were encouraged to share their Thanksgiving stories, and a handful were selected to be broadcast on 90.1 FM HD1 Thanksgiving Day.

The Web site also has a continuously growing library of audio and video podcasts. A number of new RSS Podcasts were made available through wfyi.org in 2010, including local newscast archives and the Economic Club of Indiana’s Speaker Series. Many NPR and PBS RSS offerings are also available.

Throughout the year, Indiana Week in Review viewers and listeners have been notified about weekly topics and invited to participate in weekly online polls.

WFYI Public Radio provides a newly updated, realtime Web stream allowing Central Indiana residents to stay connected to their community from anywhere in the world that access to the Internet is available. The station also simulcasts its HD offerings through the Web, making them available to those without an HD radio.

WFYI is also connecting with viewers and listeners through its growing presence on social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr.

WFYI was founded through a spirit of volunteerism and dedication to public broadcasting. That spirit remains strong thanks to the hundreds of annual volunteers who donate their time to help WFYI build communities and strengthen families in Central Indiana.

WFYI volunteers lend a hand with a variety of tasks, from answering the phones during television and radio membership drives, to preparing weekly mailings every Thursday morning. They are a crucial part of the Indiana Reading and Information Services, reading for live and recorded broadcasts each and every day for individuals who are reading impaired.

Volunteers are also vital to WFYI’s efforts to connect with the community through signature events like WFYI’s Let’s Meet PBS KIDS in the Park, The Ice Miller Indy Wine Fest, hosted by WFYI, Speaking of Women’s Health® and Spirited Chase .

IRIS serves individuals through radio broadcasts and the Web.

Every day, IRIS provides readings of regional newspapers and many other Indianapolis publications to certified listeners with special, custom-built radio receivers – provided free of charge to use as long as they are needed. The radio broadcast stretches 45 miles beyond Indianapolis.

IRIS broadcasts are also available via audio streaming on the World Wide Web, allowing users to access the service anywhere there is an Internet connection and Windows Media Player. Anyone with the proper certification may acquire a user name and password to access the Web stream, in addition to other IRIS resources.

Indiana Reading and Information Services (IRIS) serves the Central Indiana community and beyond as an around-the-clock communications link for Hoosiers who are reading impaired.

IRIS staff and volunteers provide a service for those who cannot read normal print – due to blindness, low vision, physical impairments, illness, learning disorders or illiteracy – allowing them to stay connected with their community through local news and information, or to relax with a good book.

CoMMuNITY EVENTS

WFYI’s mission to be a center of discovery was on display during numerous community events throughout the year.

In February, the Ice Miller Indy Wine Fest, hosted by WFYI and presented by Clark Appliance, attracted wine enthusiasts and novices alike to the Indiana Roof Ballroom for the 11th year. Wine experts shared their knowledge of fine wines from across the state and around the world during this elegant evening.

WFYI’s Let’s Meet PBS KIDS in the Park returned in June for the 17th year, but in a new location. The daylong, free, family celebration, presented by Riley Hospital for Children and Marsh Supermarkets, attracted approximately 40,000 people to Military Park in White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis. The largest PBS KIDS event of its kind in the nation featured non-stop entertainment and included educational activities that reflected WFYI’s commitment to early childhood learning.

Children and parents were treated to face-to-face meetings with several of the colorful, cuddly walkaround characters they love and admire most on PBS – including Super Why and Princess Presto, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Sesame Street walkaround character Rosita and The Cat in the Hat.

For the 13th year, WFYI hosted Speaking of Women’s Health®, presented by St. Vincent Women’s Services, at the Indiana Convention Center in September. Nearly 1,000 attended the daylong event that featured engaging presentations about physical, mental, financial and spiritual health. Several Central Indiana health-related organizations also hosted informative interactive booths during the event.

WFYI also participated in numerous community events throughout the year including: the Broad Ripple Art Fair, the 500 Festival Parade, the Mayor’s 2010 Latino Soccer Cup, Penrod Arts Fair, Indianapolis’ Mexican Independence Day Bicentenial Celebration, the Indiana Dramatic Arts and Communication Festival, the Spirit and Place Festival and IndyTalks.

Wfyi was one of a dozen community organizations that created the initiative.

Tough Decisions: Defending the Homeland, takes viewers behind-the-scenes during a groundbreaking simulation of a terrorism event. the documentary was produced by Wfyi in partnership with the indiana university school of law and the iu school of public and environmental Affairs.

Wfyi hosts the second annual indiana dramatic Arts and communications festival and competition (indAcs). the festival is an opportunity for children, youth and adults to share their passion for poetry, drama and communication in a nurturing environment.

Take Two, a moving locally-produced documentary, explores the musical and father and son-like relationship of saxophonist frank glover and pianist claude sifferlen as the jazz duo faces an inevitable separation due to sifferlen’s battle with cancer.

IRISWFYI’s Indiana Reading and Information Services (IRIS) provides around-the-clock access to the written word through both local broadcast service and a statewide toll-free telephone access system. Each day more than 3,200 Hoosiers with reading-impairments have access to newspapers, magazines, liter-ary works and more through IRIS.
