    and 40th anniversary

    Engineering Education Fast Forwardis the summary o 40 years (1973 > 2013 >>)

o intensive dedication and engagement o many educators in dierent (technical)

universities and higher education institutes or engineering students. Four decades

ago SEFI was created as a network o people and institutes that were concerned with

high quality education specically or engineers. The trend was immediately clear: the

rst SEFI conerences were dealing with non-technical training, project-oriented studies

and research in educational institutes. SEFI opens the discussion on the social role o

engineers, on targeted innovative education concepts and on the relation education-

research in engineering programs. Since then a series o 40 conerences treated all

essential components o engineering education eorts in Europe and beyond. Exactly

25 years ater the SEFI conerence on Engineering Education in Europe, we are back in

    Leuven or the 41st edition.

We are pleased to welcome educators and interested people rom more than 30

countries worldwide back in Leuven, the place where the original SEFI agreement was

signed in 1973. For this edition we will concentrate on the ollowing areas in engineering

education: research, concepts, tools, curriculum development, ethics, lifelong learning,

mathematics, physics and biology, quality assurance, attraction, sustainability, industry

and diversity. Every area is mostly overlapping with others, e.g. researchon educational

toolsto implement new conceptson sustainability. We are sure this will be refected in

the presentations and will spark interesting discussion, as this conerence is a meeting

place o people with vibrating ideas and rich experiences: a dialogue between history

and uture, between tradition and innovation, between consolidation and progress.

We hope that the SEFI-Leuven experience will lead to long-lasting new initiatives and to

active networking between all actors o the engineering education society.
