With a College of Arts and Sciences and a

College of Professional Studies, Alvernia offers

more than 50 majors and minors in nearly every

field. In-demand programs available include

nursing, occupational therapy, business, biology

and criminal justice, to name but a few, providing

you with the academic opportunities to explore

and pursue your chosen career path — and

discover your true passion.

While here, you will learn from engaging

classroom discussions and activities that bring

to life our liberal arts foundation. Our general

education curriculum will give you the package

of skills to navigate life as we know it (thinking

skills, creativity, problem-solving, analytical

abilities and ethical training). You’ll learn even

more when you apply that knowledge in actual

environments with real-life challenges.

An Alvernia education ensures that you’ll have

access to experiences that help you develop the

broad knowledge and intellectual skills needed for

a successful career and civic responsibility.

Learning here includes opportunities for hands-on

experiences such as:

Domestic and international service projects,

including programs with the Holleran Center

for Community Engagement and the O’Pake

Institute for Ethics, Leadership & Public Service

Study Abroad and internship opportunities

Our unique Washington Center Experience

To help you navigate it all, we’ve created a new

Educational Planning Center. It is the hub for

student advising and the central resource center

for experiential learning opportunities, major and

career exploration, academic support services

and the first-year experience.

Preparing you for a successful career and a rewarding future is a priority

at Alvernia. You’ll learn about life and develop as a person. But equally

important, you’ll get the training and knowledge needed to land that first

job after graduation.

Our graduates go on to work at many top organizations, including

Boeing, Calvin Klein, Disney, Coca-Cola, ESPN, GlaxoSmithKline,

Hewlett-Packard and the FBI, to name just a few. Others choose to

attend graduate school at places such as the University of Pennsylvania,

Carnegie Mellon, Seton Hall, Lehigh, Villanova, Temple and Ohio State.

To support our students’ academic success, we have invested in a

number of multimillion-dollar additions to our campus, including:

A laser laboratory supporting our science programs

A state-of-the-art learning suite for our criminal justice and

counseling programs

A theater and recital hall, with an art gallery, music studios

and rehearsal spaces

An Educational Technology Center and media suite

A Healthcare Science wing with multiple labs

An expanded Library Learning Commons

A Physical Therapy center to support the Doctor of Physical

Therapy program that begins in 2014

These are only the most recent features of the renaissance occurring

on our campus. It really is an exciting time to be at Alvernia!

Alvernia’s nursing program helped me understand the diagnosis and care provided instead of relying solely on a textbook.

Alvernia’s expanding healthcare and human

service programs are catching the attention of

many who are considering careers in these

high-demand and fast-growing professions.

With established programs in nursing,

occupational therapy and athletic training,

Alvernia also offers an undergraduate major

in healthcare science and an associate of

science degree program in medical imaging

(in conjunction with Reading Health Systems).

Alvernia’s healthcare science major gives you

great versatility in your future career, preparing

you for work in agencies, businesses and

medical care settings as healthcare educators,

advocates or managers.

Our Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program,

currently in pre-candidacy stage, is expected

to begin in 2014. The DPT is a clinical post-

graduate doctoral degree that is approximately

three years in length and deemed to be the

preferred credential for optimally preparing

graduates to make significant contributions

to the physical therapy profession.

Our growth and expansion of programs in

healthcare complements our well-developed

programs in human services, including criminal

justice, social work and education. These all

capitalize on our longtime strength in featuring

real-world, hands-on learning within a values-

based liberal arts education.

Alvernia’s Catholic heritage guides us to foster ethical leadership and

service to others while promoting civic engagement as a lifelong

pursuit in every career and life path. Our Franciscan mission influences

all that we do, from our curriculum and culture to what we teach and

how we teach it. This creates a learning environment that encourages

students to follow their individual gifts to transform themselves and

the world around them.

Alvernia’s unique learning environment is abundant with opportunities

for students of all backgrounds to enrich their ethical, moral and

spiritual development. Many students are active in Campus Ministry

and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, which provide opportunities to

engage in a community of faith, pursue a life of service and advance

peace and social justice initiatives. Others enjoy involvement with

Alvernia’s nationally recognized Holleran Center for Community

Engagement and the O’Pake Institute for Ethics, Leadership & Public

Service. The university also offers a rich liturgical life for all interested

students, who are welcomed to Mass on Sunday and during the week.

Doing Well and Doing GoodAt Alvernia, service learning and volunteer opportunities abound. You’ll be

inspired to help those in need through community service activities that will

expose you to environmental, cultural and social justice issues as well as a

variety of programs and activities.

Our service trips are popular with students who want to combine their desire

to help those in need with an interest in exploring cultures different from their

own. Recent trips have included travel to Ecuador, the Dominican Republic,

New Orleans and Appalachia.

Caring for each other, our planet and our community comes together with

a first-class education to provide you with an unparalleled environment in

which to belong, grow, develop and bloom — as a person and a professional.

Just like so many people have helped me at Alvernia, I want to help other college students in the future.
