WAC WELCOMES SIX NEW HOOPS TEAMS TO LEAGUE

THREE HEAD COACHES BEGIN FIRST YEAR WITH RESPECTIVE WAC PROGRAMS THIS SEASON

Dan Majerle will begin his fi rst season as head coach at Grand Canyon, Kareem Richardson takes over the Kansas City program and Dan Hipsher will guide UTPA in his fi rst year with the Broncs. Majerle takes over the GCU program after spending the last fi ve years as an assistant coach with the NBA’s Phoenix Suns. Majerle played 14 seasons in the NBA (eight seasons with the Suns), averaging 11.4 points over 955 games. He made three All-Star appearances and also was named to the 1990-91 and 1992-93 NBA All-Defensive second team. He led the league in three-pointers made (192) in 1993-94. Richardson takes over the Kansas City program after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville under legendary coach Rick Pitino. He helped Louisville to the Big East tournament crown and the NCAA Tournament No. 1 overall seed, on the way to the 2013 National Championship. Richardson has 16 years of collegiate coaching experience. UTPA welcomed Hipsher to lead its program this past off season. Hipsher had been the associate head coach at Alabama for the last four seasons where he most recently helped guide the Tide to a 23-13 record (12-7 SEC) and the NIT quarterfi nals. Hipsher has 34 years of collegiate coaching experience, including 15 seasons as a head coach at Wittenberg, Stetson and Akron.

Eleven players that recieved All-Conference honors in their respective leagues last season return for the 2013-14 season. Daniel Mullings and Sim Bhullar of New Mexico State were named to the all-WAC second and third teams, respectively. Mullings was also named to last year’s WAC All-Defensive team and Bhullar earned WAC Freshman of the Year and all-newcomer team honors. Chicago State and Utah Valley each return multiple Great West All-Conference honorees from a year ago. CSU’s Nate Duhon returns for his senior season after earning All-Great West second team and all-newcomer team honors last year. Duhon also recieved Great West Newcomer of the Year honors. Quinton Pippen returns to Chicago State for his senior year after being named to the Great West’s second team All-Conference and All-Newcomer squad. Pippen was named Great West co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. Jamere Dismukes and Matt Ross return to Chicago State after both earned all-Great West honorable mention honors last year. Ross was also named to the Great West’s all-newcomer team. Utah Valley returns two players that earned Great West all-conference awards last season. Ben Aird and Holton Hunsaker both return to the Wolverines for their senior seasons after being named to the Great West’s all-conference fi rst team.

NEW MEXICO STATE EARNS NO. 13 SEED, FALLS TO NO. 4 SAINT LOUIS AT NCAA TOURNAMENT

New Mexico State had its season come to an end in an NCAA Tournament second-round game on March 21. Atlantic-10 champion and No. 4 seed Saint Louis proved too much for the WAC Tourna-ment champion and No. 13 seed Aggies, who were saddled with a 64-44 defeat in the Midwest Region contest. The 44 points was a season-low for NM State as was its 27.9 shooting percentage (17-of-61). Additionally, the Aggies made just 2-of-16 three-point tries. Bandja Sy was an off ensive bright spot for NM State. He fi nished with a team-high 17 points. Unfortunately for NM State, no other player had more than six in the scoring column.

THREE WAC TEAMS EARN BIDS TO PLAY IN NIT AND CIT

After a strong season that resulted in a 26-6 record and a WAC regular season championship, Louisiana Tech was invited to participate in the 76th edition of the National Invitation Tournament. The Bulldogs went 1-1 at the tournament with a 71-66 win at Florida State before taking a 63-52 loss at Southern Miss in the second round.

Denver also earned an NIT bid after fi nishing the regular season with a 21-9 record. The NIT bid marked just the third time in DU history that the team made it to the NIT fi eld. It also marked the fi rst time that DU hosted an NIT game. The Pioneers won their fi rst round game, defeating Ohio 61-57 at home before falling 62-52 at Maryland in round two.

UT Arlington accepted an invitation to play in the CollegeInsider.com tournament. The tourna-ment marked the fourth time that UTA had played in a postseason tournament. The Mavericks dropped an 84-76 decision in the fi rst round of the CIT at home.

NEW MEXICO STATE CLAIMS SECOND-STRAIGHT WAC TOURNAMENT TITLE

New Mexico State punched its card to the NCAA Tournament with a 64-55 win over UT Arlington in the fi nal game of the WAC Tournament on March 16. Tournament MVP Sim Bhullar netted 16 points and added 15 rebounds as he helped the Aggies to the WAC’s auto bid into the NCAA Tournament. Daniel Mullings (16) and Bandja Sy (10) also hit double fi gures on the score sheet for the Aggies. UTA’s Kevin Butler scored 13 points and fought for 10 boards for the Mavs.

DENVER AND LOUISIANA TECH SHARE 2012-13 WAC REGULAR SEASON CROWN

Killian Larson

C, 6-9, 268, Sr.

Larson garnered Sec-ond Team All-Pac West honors last season after starting 30 of 31 games for the ‘Lopes ... his 11.5 points per game were second-most on the team ... led the confer-ence with 8.9 rebounds per game, while his 259

total rebounds were also tops among conference players ... posted 11 double-doubles during his junior campaign ... named PacWest Player of the Week for Dec. 10-16, 2012 after scoring 22 points in a 71-61 win over Montana State – Billings ... named PacWest Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year for men’s basketball.

Grand Canyon University got an early start to the 2013-14 season, playing four games in Europe from Aug. 14-24. The squad went 4-0, playing two games in both Italy and Greece.

The ‘Lopes welcome nine new players to the squad, three of which have Division I experi-ence, with Demetrius Walker from New Mexico, Daniel Al-exander from Texas A&M, and Jeremy Adams from Colorado.

GCU will participate in three non-conference tournaments to open the 2013-14 season, including the USD Tournament hosted by San Diego, the Global Sports Showcase hosted by the University of Utah, and the Dr. Pepper Classic hosted by Tennessee Chattanooga.

According to the NCAA, GCU ranked eighth nation-ally in average attendance (2,396) for D-II in men’s basketball and would have been third among the current group of WAC schools.

GCU made the NCAA Division II Basketball Tourna-ment in each of the past two seasons, boasting a 42-16 overall record in those years. The ‘Lopes have lost just two games at GCU Arena in that same time frame.
