UTAH STATE FALLS TO TEXAS A&M AT NCAA TOURNAMENTThree players in double-digits was not enough for 12th-seeded Utah State as the Aggies were topped by the Wildcats of Kansas State, 73-68, in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament at the McKale Center at Tuscon, Ariz. USU, ranked No. 17 in this week’s ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ poll and No. 19 in the Associated Press poll ends its record season with a 30-4 mark, as the 30 wins ties the 2008-09 team for most in school history and its 30-4 mark is the best-ever in the program’s history. No. 24/21 K-State improves to 23-10 overall and advances to play third-seeded and No. 16/16 Wisconsin in the third round on Saturday. In his final game in an Aggie uniform, senior forward Tai Wesley netted a team-high 18 points, while junior guard Brockeith Pane added 17 points and senior guard Pooh Williams tied a career-high with four three-pointers on the way to 16 points. Wesley and senior guard Tyler Newbold shared not only team-best rebounding honors but game-best as well snaring six boards each. The Aggies pulled within 33-28 less than three minutes into the second half as Wesley hit a jumper and a layup sandwiched around a Pane layup. The Wildcats responded and opened a 47-34 lead at the 10:14 mark on a Kelly jumper. USU countered to close to 56-50 on a driving Williams dunk with 4:20 to play, but that would be the closest the Aggies would get until the waning seconds. Utah State’s senior class of Wesley, Green, Newbold, Williams, and forwards Nate Bendall and Matt Formisano leave USU as their winningest players in school history with a four-year record of 108-28. That group led the Aggies to four-straight regular-season Western Athletic Conference championships and two WAC Tournament titles in the last three years.

UTAH STATE CLAIMS 2011 WAC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT TITLETai Wesley and Brockeith Pane each scored 19 points and Wesley also pulled down nine rebounds as the Aggies won the WAC Tournament with a 77-69 win over Boise State in the championship contest of the 2011 WAC Basketball Tournament championship game. La’Shard Anderson paced Boise State with 18 points.

12 2011-12 WAC Men’s Basketball Preview

Kyle BaroneC, 6-10, 225, Jr.

Played in all 32 games and started nine as a sophomore in 2010-11 ... all-WAC honorable mention after averag-ing 10.5 points and 5.8 rebounds, and shooting a WAC-best 61.1 percent overall and 64.5 percent

in conference play ... broke the WAC career record for conference-only shooting with a 63.1 (101-160) percentage in his two seasons of play ... shot .500 or better in 26 of his 32 games during the year, including a streak of straight 11 games from Nov. 27 through Jan. 8 during which he shot 49-of-71 (.690).

lWith just six years of NCAA Division I playing expe-rience last season, Idaho was the least-experienced team in the nation to qualify for postseason play. They’ll be in a similar situation this year when the Vandal returners account for just eight total years of expe-rience and only two players with more than one year of D-I playing time.

lIdaho returns 43.8 percent of its scoring, 45.1 percent of its rebounding and 52.5 percent of its assists from last season’s team. WAC field goal percent-age leader Kyle Barone (.611) and conference assist-to-turnover ratio leader Landon Tatum (2.20) both return for Idaho this year. Barone also holds the distinction as the most accurate shooter in the history of WAC games, with a career 63.1 shooting percentage against conference opponents.

lSince 2008-09, UI has an average final RPI ranking of 150, with a high of 135 in 2009. In the previous seven seasons, UI’s average final ranking was 270th and the team didn’t crack the top 150 once.

lIdaho has earned double-digit home victories twice in three years under Don Verlin. You’d have to go back to 1998-99 to find the last time Idaho had double-digit home wins. Idaho’s overall win total of 18 from last season was the team’s most since 1993-94, when the team went 18-10 and took third in the Big Sky.

FAST FACTSince Don Verlin took over as Idaho’s head coach, his teams have significantly raised the program’s standards. lLouisiana Tech returns only six letter winners from last year’s team while it welcomes a total of seven newcomers (four high school, two transfers, one redshirt).

lSophomore guard Kenyon McNeaill is the only returner this year who started more than half of the Bulldogs 32 games last year.

lReturners Romario Souza (15), Brandon Gibson (12), Cordarius Johnson (11), Lon-nie Smith (9) and JL Lewis (5) all started at least one game last year.

lTech welcomes a pair of Ole Miss transfers who follow former Rebel coach and new Bulldog head coach Mike White to Ruston in guard Trevor Gas-kins and forward Isaiah Massey.

lTech will look to bounce back after winning only two Western Athletic Conference games last year, the fewest by the program since it joined the league in 2001-02.

lThe Bulldogs roster will include only two players from the state of Louisiana in Cordarius Johnson and JL Lewis.

Dario HuntF, 6-8, 230, Sr.

Earned second-team All-WAC honors follow-ing his junior campaign ... named to the All-WAC Defensive Team for the second consecu-tive season and was honored as Nevada’s Defensive Player of the

Year for the second time ... National Association of Basketball Coaches District 6 second team selection as a junior ... averaged near a double-double scoring 12.4 points per game to rank 12th in the WAC and grabbed a league best 9.7 rebounds per contest last season.

lNevada returns all five starters in senior forward Dario Hunt, senior forward Olek Czyz, junior guard Malik Story, sophomore guard Deonte Burton and sophomore guard Jerrry Evans, Jr. from last year’s team that posted a 13-19 re-cord and went 8-8 in WAC play to finish in a tie for fifth. Hunt is the only starter who had suited up for the Wolf Pack prior to last season.

lThe returning starters were the Pack’s top five scorers last season with Story (14.5 ppg), Burton (13.7 ppg), Hunt (12.4 ppg) and Czyz (12.3 ppg) averaging in double figures followed by Evans (4.9 ppg). Overall the Pack returns 91 percent of its offense from last year.

lThe 2010-11 squad was dominated by newcomers as 10 of the 16 on the roster were first year players of which six were freshmen.

lHunt was named to the All-WAC second-team last season and was selected to the WAC Defensive Team for the second year in a row.

lHead coach David Carter returns for his third sea-son leading the Nevada men’s basketball team. In two seasons he has posted a 34-32 record. Carter was the Pack’ second first-year coach to produce a 20 win season, as the team was 21-13 in 2009-10, his first as head coach.
