2013 SEASON PREVIEWNew year, new coach, new system and plenty of patience is the theme for the 2013-2014 Ohio Dominican men’s basketball team. First year head coach Dan Evans hopes to turn around the program’s 5-23 mark of last year, but realizes there will be bumps in the road.

Losing starting point guard Morgan Jones and fellow guard John Trew will be no easy task for Evans and the young Panther crew. Jones, an All-GLIAC Second Team selection last year, posted double-digit points in 25 of the Panthers 28 games, including 10 games where he scored 20 points or more. For the season, Jones averaged 16.7 points per game, which was fifth in the conference. He also finished third in the league in steals with 43 and fifth with 84 assists. For his career, he played in 100 games in a Panther uniform. On January 24, Jones became the 22nd ODU men’s basketball player to score more than 1,000 points. Morgan finished his career with 1,186. He finished fifth in the Panther record books with 159 career steals, and sixth all-time in Panther history in assists, dishing out 274. Trew finished his ca-reer ranked ninth in the conference with 24 blocks, and is second on the all-time Panther list with 118. He scored 732 career points and grabbed 384 rebounds during his time at ODU.

The philosophy for Coach Evans is simple and straightforward. “Our expectation is for everyone involved to improve on a daily basis,” said Evans. “We are trying to build a program that can have sustained success. In order to do that, all of us must buy into our principles and look to live them each day. Our men have done a wonderful job of trying to learn and excel with the con-cepts we are teaching. If we can be a focused, hardworking team every day, we will give ourselves the best chance to be successful every time out.”

The Seniors

Seniors Brandon Carr (Chicago, Ill.), Don Kellum (Chicago, Ill.), and Ledarius Stennis (Moss Pointe, MS) will return to the hard-wood for their final season as a Panther. Also returning for the Panthers is Kevin Domingue (Rockville, MD).

Carr, played in 19 games during the 2012-13 season and had a breakout game against Lake Superior State, scoring 15 points in 15 minutes of action.

Kellum, who saw significant time last season, appeared in 24 games with six starts. He scored a season best 12 points, had five rebounds and two blocks against Wayne State on Dec. 1. For the season, he averaged 5.2 points per game and 3.7 rebounds per contest.

Stennis appeared in 25 games for the Panthers. He averaged 1.9 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. Against Ashland, Stennis scored a season-high eight points.

“Our upperclassmen need to be leaders for the younger, less experienced players,” said Evans. “Given that so much is new for everyone; their leadership becomes even more important as we work through any adjustments that are made. All of our older guys are focused on being the best team we can be, and this mindset is critical.”

The Juniors

Three of the four returning juniors started at some point for the Panthers last season, and Coach Evans is high on the work ethic of all three. The trio of Jesse Ward (North Pole, Ala.), Brock Am-mons (Findlay, Ohio), and Bobby Stauffer (Lexington, Ky.) will all be counted on for quality minutes.

Ward had five starts for the Panthers and played in 19 games last season. His best game was on Nov. 10, when he scored a season high six points.Ammons played in all 28 games with seven starts. He finished the season with 96 points, 49 rebounds, eight steals and nine blocks.

Stauffer was the starting center for the Panthers last year and averaged 11.2 points per game, while pulling down 6.4 rebounds.

After taking last year off, D.J Decker (East Tawas, Mich.) will be back in the Black and Gold uniform for the 2013-14 season. As a freshman, he appeared in 10 games where he average 1.7 min-utes per game. Defensively, Decker grabbed four rebounds.

The Sophomores

The Panthers return four freshmen from last year’s squad, three of which started or saw significant playing time.

Chad Nelson (Pickerington, North) started in 23 of the 28 games last season where he averaged 22.1 minutes per game. Offen-sively, Nelson averaged 4.4 points per game and had a shooting percentage of .357, including a .326 percentage from behind the arc.

Mark Minch (West Chester, Ohio) also saw significant playing time, playing in 25 games for the Panthers with 11 starts. Minch averaged 6.6 points per game and collected 69 total rebounds.

Trent Weaver (Hilliard, Ohio) played in 27 of the 28 games for the Panthers and had eight starts. He averaged 6.1 points per contest and was a .803 percent shooter from the free-throw line. He pulled in 120 rebounds, aver-aging 4.4 per contest.

Rounding out the sophomore class is Jordan Cowgill (Worthington, Ohio). Cowgill played in 25 games for ODU and averaged 4.5 points per game. From the free-throw line, Cowgill was a .791 shooter.

“The four sophomores were lucky enough to see a lot of minutes as fresh-men,” said Evans. “Their ability to raise their game on a consistent basis will be a big factor for us. Having seen Division II basketball and particularly GLIAC basketball, they have valuable experiences to draw from as they enter their second season.”

The Freshman

Reece Dils (Saline, Mich.) is the lone newcomer for this Panther squad. The 5-11 youngster was named to the Southeastern All-Conference (SEC) team in both his freshman and sophomore years and was also named to the All-State Team his sophomore year.

Mel Leach (Shaker Heights, Ohio) joins the Panther squad after having a successful season with the football team this fall.

Schedule

The Panthers will open the 2013-14 season with four nonconference matchups starting on Tuesday, Nov. 12 against Urbana in Alumni Hall. Three of the four games in November will be played at home, with the only road contest being at Salem International on Wednesday, Nov. 20.

GLIAC play will start on Dec. 5 when the Panthers travel to Saginaw Val-ley, who was selected to finish fourth in the North Division in the GLIAC preseason polls. Highlighting the Panthers schedule are the two games against Findlay. The Oilers were the unanimous GLIAC preseason favorites, receiving all 24 votes.

“Knowing that we have 22 grueling GLIAC games beginning in early December, we are looking forward to learning from our non-conference schedule and growing as a team,” said Evans. “Every game will be an opportunity to measure where we are at as a team. We will learn nightly regardless of the result.”

COACHING STAFF

HEAD COACH

Dan Evans, the 13th head men’s basketball coach in Ohio Dominican history, was hired on May 6, 2013 to lead the Panthers after spending the past six seasons as an assistant coach at fellow GLIAC member Hillsdale College.

Evans was part of a coaching staff that rebuilt the Hillsdale basketball program, taking over a team that had just four returning players in the 2007-08 season and quickly turning it into one of the top teams in the GLIAC.

The Chargers have compiled a 61-22 record over the past three seasons, highlighted by a 24-6 mark and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011-12. Hillsdale won the GLIAC regu-lar season title that season, which came on the heels of a 20-win campaign in 2010-11.

Dan Evans

ASSISTANT COACH

Hamilton joins ODU after serving as an assistant at Capital University for seven sea-sons from 2006-2013. While with the Crusaders, Hamilton was part of a program that saw Head Coach Damon Goodwin named as Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Coach of the year five times.

During his time with the Crusaders, the team captured three regular season Ohio Athletic Conference championships as well as two OAC tournament titles. In 2009, Capital won a school-record 26 games en route to the NCAA “Sweet 16”, which marked the third time the Crusaders had reached the NCAA tournament. Capital reached the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in 2011-12, when the team shared the OAC regular season title and won the OAC Tournament championship. This past season, the Crusaders captured the OAC season title.

Before going to Capital, Hamilton spent a season as the head boys basketball coach at St. Marys Memorial High School in St. Marys, Ohio. Prior to that he was the assistant varsity boys basketball coach for three seasons at Hilliard Davidson High School.

The Marion, Ohio, native played four seasons and coached for another season at California University of Pennsylvania. Hamilton helped lead the Vulcans to three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships and a pair of trips to the NCAA Division II Basketball Tournament. Hamilton has both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from California (Pa.).

Cort Hamilton

ASSISTANT COACH

Fresh off an outstanding playing career at nearby Ohio Wesleyan (2009-2013), Andy Winters begins his first season as a member of the Ohio Dominican coaching staff. Andy hails from Columbus and attended Bishop Watterson High School.

While at Ohio Wesleyan, Winters led the Battling Bishops to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2012 and 2013. .In addition to breaking the career assist mark for OWU, he also led the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) in assists all four years.

In 2013, he was named as a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) First Team All-American. He also received (NABC) Great Lakes District First Team and Player of the Year honors, and the North Coast Conference (NCAC) First Team and Player of the Year award. Winters was named D3 Hoops and D3 News All-American as well as D3 Hoops Great Lakes Region First Team and Player of the Year.

Off the court, Winters worked with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the National Association of Basketball Coaches Service organization. He also works area basketball camps and shootouts.

Winters graduated from OWU with a degree in History Education.

Andy Winters

Most recently, the Chargers completed a 17-10 season and qualified for the GLIAC for a sixth consecutive season.

While at Hillsdale, Evans has helped coach five first team all-conference selections, including Brad Guinane, who earned All-American honors in 2012. Off the court, the Hillsdale men’s basketball team has posted a 3.0 cumulative GPA and has been involved in community outreach programs such as providing free basketball clinics and working with Habitat for Humanity.

Evans played his collegiate ball at Lawrence University, a Division III school in Wisconsin, where he was a three-year starter and captain. He earned all-conference honors as a senior and helped take Lawrence to the Elite Eight in 2004.

Evans left the basketball realm for several years after graduation, working for CVS Caremark before getting the itch to join the coaching ranks. He re-connected with John Tharp – his former head coach at Lawrence – at Hillsdale as a volunteer assistant in 2007, Tharp’s first directing the Chargers, and quickly was promoted to a full-time assistant role.

Ohio Dominican University is an accredited four-year liberal arts institution, founded in 1911 in the Catholic and Dominican traditions. The university has more than 3,100 students and offers undergraduate degrees in over 50 majors as well as six graduate degree programs. Ohio Dominican uses a student-centered approach, with a commit-ment to quality teaching and learning and a number of academic programs of distinction.

Academics are at the heart of everything done at Ohio Dominican University. Institutions of higher learning exist to provide education for their students, and that education starts in the classroom. It continues, of course, on athletic fields and in residence halls, in re-hearsals and clubs, in the library and the lab, but it begins with the relationship between students and their instructors.

ODU’s mission is grounded in our identity as a Catholic and Dominican liberal arts institution. The University’s motto - To contemplate truth and share the fruits of that contemplation with others - serves as our guiding principle of teaching and learning. ODU’s core curriculum, taken by all students, focuses on seven learning outcomes that collectively identify the institution’s expectations for what all students will be able to be and do as Ohio Dominican graduates. Additionally, students complete a sequence of courses in one of 50 undergraduate major areas of study including those in the arts, sciences, and professions.

Led by a talented faculty dedicated to excellence in teaching and committed to helping students learn, ODU’s student engagement model focuses on serving the whole student through personal attention and assistance in collaboration with the institution’s Divi-sion of Student Development. Ohio Dominican is fully accredited and offers academic programs at the baccalaureate and masters degree levels through five divisions: Arts and Letters; Social and Behavioral Sciences; Mathematics, Computer and Natural Sciences; Business; and Education.

The University is significantly expanding the level of on-campus student extracurricular activities and improving residential life. At the same time, Ohio Dominican has expanded

its extracurricular offerings, providing a greater number of on-campus activities for both residential and commuter students. A central focus has been the addition of a new Student Center and expansion of athletic programs, which attract student athletes and non athletes alike, and foster alumni participation.

Student organizations and activities at ODU offer events and activities that relate to areas of academic interest, student government, artistic performance, multicultural identity, media, athletic, social, honorary, religious and service organizations. Ohio Dominican student activities and events are open to all students.

Over the past 10 years, Ohio Dominican has followed an aggressive expansion plan for its facilities which include three new residence halls; additional sports and recreation facilities; development of Sunbury Road as a gateway to the campus; the new Bishop James A Griffi n Student Center and a new science facility, Battelle Hall.

In 2011 the students, faculty, staff, alumni, community leaders and friends celebrated the University’s Centennial anniversary. The Centennial theme, A Century of Transform-ing Lives, reflected on ODU’s Dominican heritage, history and tradition. This celebra-tion encouraged the University community to reflect upon the transformative effect that Ohio Dominican has had on the lives its faculty, students, alumni, staff and friends.

Ohio Dominican is focused on becoming the preeminent Catholic institution of higher learning, providing quality programs in both the liberal arts and the professions, com-mitted to the fundamental value of liberal education, and deeply rooted in its Dominican tradition. Ohio Dominican is known for its student-centered and innovative approaches to teaching and learning; its commitment to excellence in academic and co-curricular programs; its commitment to service and community responsibility; its outstanding campus facilities and resources; its global outreach in response to educational needs; and its reputation for distinction in values-based higher education.

Panther Field Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer

Ohio Dominican University continues to demonstrate progressive improvement to its athletic facilities with the addition of Panther Field. Built in 2004, our newest athletic facility is home to our football team and men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as our club level lacrosse team. To withstand the wear and tear of constant use, Panther Field is equipped with the latest in artificial surfaces, SprinTurf®. The field has a seating capacity of 1,750 with a 42-foot press box located at the top of the home bleachers. Recent additions to Panther Field include bleachers on the guest side of the field with a capacity of 500 and a building that houses a ticket office, concession stand and restrooms. Lights were also recently added to the facility, an addition that makes Panther Field one of the finer facilities of its size in the Midwest. The new facility replaced ODU’s former natural grass soccer complex and is located next to Alumni Hall on the west side of campus.

Alumni Hall Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball

Opened in 1989, Alumni Hall has a seating capacity of 3,000 and is the home of the women’s volleyball and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Alumni Hall was given a much needed renovation and expansion in 2009-10. One full-length bas-ketball court was added, the hardwood was resurfaced, and bleachers were added to the far side of the court.

After the renovation all of the coaches now have an office on the second floor of Alumni. There are also several rooms that coaches may utilize to review game tape, hold team meetings and meet with future and current Panthers. Some of the other amenities in Alumni Hall are four locker rooms, the Black and Gold Room, a spa-cious conference room, a refurbished weight room that is available to both students and student-athletes, and an athletic training room. Alumni Hall has the capability of accommodating three regulation size basketball and volleyball courts.

Panther Courts Men’s and Women’s Tennis

Also on the grounds of the Ohio Dominican Sports Complex west side location are six regulation size tennis courts complete with lights. The courts were recently re-surfaced with a blue Latex-ite® coating that resembles the courts that host the U.S. Open Championship. The tennis courts are enclosed with a green chain link fence to accommodate the Panther men’s and women’s tennis teams.

Panther Valley/Frank Damian FielD Baseball

First time visitors are pleasantly surprised by the hidden beauty of Panther Valley as they descend upon ODU’s prized baseball diamond. Sunken well below street-level and masked by plentiful trees, the only evidence of what awaits below is the echoing “ping” of aluminum bats meeting baseballs. The field is complete with a batting cage, home bullpen beyond the left field line and a visitor bullpen along the right field line. A recent addition to Panther Valley is a state-of-the-art scoreboard complete graphics and animatronics. Panther Valley has developed year-by-year to the point that it is now considered one of the finest college baseball facilities in the country.

Panther Softball Field

Over the years Panther Softball Field has evolved into one of the nicest facilities in the state of Ohio. The brick dust field is routinely praised by Panther opponents as the epitome of what a field should be. With its dimensions of 210 to the corners and 225 to straight away center, this softball complex features enclosed dugouts, a scoreboard, bullpens beyond the left field line, and an underground irrigation system.

Hitting Facility

Located next to the softball field is the hitting facility for both the baseball and soft-ball teams. The hitting facility provides a place for both teams to refine their skills through the harsh Central Ohio weather. With the retractable nets, the hitting facility contains three batting cages complete with pitching mounds and pitching machines.

Panther Training Facility

Along with the addition of the new stadium in 2004, the Panthers added a 7,500 square foot training facility west of the main parking lot. The facility is equipped with the latest in hammer strength weight training equipment and ODU’s second athletic training room. Offices for athletic training personal are also located in the new facility.

Jefferson Country Club

The Panthers are fortunate to call the Jefferson Country Club their home. The highlight of the Jefferson neighborhood is the spectacular Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course that opened for play in 1992. Jones created one of his most unique and challenging courses on this magnificent site. Jefferson Country Club is located on a 372 acre reserve in prestigious Jefferson Township.

Cumberland Trail Golf Club

ODU also plays on Cumberland Trail. The course, designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, opened in 1999 and measures up to 7,205 yards from the back tees. Known for its excellent conditioning and difficult design, Cumberland Trail ranks fourth in Central Ohio among public golf courses, according to Mid Ohio Golfer, and received 3.5 stars from Golf Digest. The greens at Cumberland Trail are considered by many to be the finest in the Columbus area and challenge even the best putters.

Golf Practice Facilities

ODU golfers have the ability to practice year round at the Golf Depot, located in Gahanna, Ohio. The Golf Depot features a driving range with a two acre of hitting area and four target greens to aim shots, covered/heating hitting bays, and a short game improvement area.
