Mission Bay Cluster Meeting Minutes Thursday, September 5, 2013, 6:00 pm Mission Bay High School Library  Meeting commenced 6:08 pm; quorum established Board Trustee Scott Barnett    PBMS was painted over the summer. MBHS fiel d/stadium construction will begin this winter. SDUSD has a new Superin tendent, Cindy Marten, and 40 new principals. MB Cl uster has a new Area 3 Superin tendent, Julie Martel. Budget defici t is  being filed with one-time measures such as sale of proper ties. In response to audience questions about flooding issues with MBHS construction site   Mr. Barnett says SDUSD is working with city officials on that, for more inf ormation contact Mr. Barnett. Progress of Governor’s allocation model is somewhat unknown, SDUSD is lobbying for funds to come this year. MBHS Principal Fred Hilgers    MBHS is getting ready for stadium project ground-breaking. We had 30 teachers workin g this summer on the new Comm on Core Curriculum. We have an MBHS student who is a National Merit Scholarship finalist- announcement due Nov. 11. Cluster Update (Lily Higman)   (Lily provided a powerpoint presentation, see blog post below). Barnard Asian Pacific Language Academy is open, but official grand opening is September 27. Mr. Park introduced 5 interns who are working at Barna rd. Mandarin is n ow being taught at PB Middle School. PBMS has a guest ins tructor from th e Confucius Institute at SDSU. Five  portable bungalows (classrooms) at MBHS to be removed by Christmas (2 going to Barnard, 2 to La Jolla Elementary, 1 to f acilities), audience member indicates CPJMA m ay want one. Money Magazine ranked PB as one of best neighborhoods in the nation, saying the schools are a big draw and naming PBMS and Sessi ons as being among the best in the ci ty. Elementary school enrollments and test scores are strong: API scores: Sessions 920, PB Elementary 907, Barnard 903, Crown Point 880. We are devel oping a Google calendar for all PB schools so that we can see and coordinate all school events. If you have ideas f or topics and issues to be covered in future MB Cluster meetings, email them to us at  [email protected] District/Cl uster Update (Andee Hales) - Superintendent Cin dy Marten was at MBHS on the first day of school for early morning newscasts by several TV news stations. Due to retirements and  promotions, district has 44 new principals, and in our cluster we have two new principals: Margaret Joseph at Kate Sessi ons and Muriel Bartoli ni at Crown Point. PowerSchool software (replacement for Zangle) crashed over the Labor Day weekend, with the result that some middle and high school students had incomplete schedules, and counselors had to handwrite schedules for many students. Area 3 Superintendent Julie Martel    Came out o f retirement, now overseeing 4 clusters: Mission Bay, La Jolla, Uni versity City, and Kearny. Sessions had a hazardous materials i ncident where a custodian accidentally mixed bleach and ammonia. Fire drill was conducted and k ids did well. Fire Department came and res olved the problem. Chair-elect Nomination and Election - Lily Higman explained the structure of the MB ClusterCommittee and announced that the Chair-elect position is still open.

All Schools Fair (Lily Higman) –  Last year’s all school fair was held in January, but we plan to

hold it earlier this year, either November 2nd or 9th. The fair will include information,

 presentations, and performances by all six PB schools. The fair will be held at Mission BayHigh and we hope participants will also visit the MBHS Farmer’s Market (100% of proceeds goto MBHS.) There is a sign-up sheet in the back if you would like to be part of the committee

working on the all schools fair.
