Amsterdam

3d Printed Ceramic Bricks

The Building Bytes project led by Brian Peters, co-

founder of Amsterdam-based Design Lab

Workshop, aims to develop new methods of

fabrication for use in architecture.

One of these new technologies is using 3D-printers

to print bricks from ceramic materials. Peters has

been working with 3D printers for the past few

yeas and wanted to develop the machines to

create something larger that could be used inbuildings. During a six-week residency at the

European Ceramic Work Center in the south of

Holland he experimented with printing ceramics.

Camouflage House

Architect Hiroshi Iguchis sustainable solution was

to surround the greenhouses with tall, deciduous

trees. In the summer, the breathing of the

trees leaves and the shadows they cast over the

homes help cool the spaces. To combatmoisturefrom the humidity, residents can open the top

windows of the glass spaces.

Timbuktu, Mali

The Timbuktu Manuscripts

There were fears last week that Mali's rebels had

destroyed thousands of Timbuktu's manuscripts -

although it later emerged that the vast majority

had been carefully hidden in homes.

Still, some of the priceless documents were burnt

or damaged in the chaos. The manuscripts are an

invaluable record, says a scholar who has

researched them.
