    Brazil

Another piece of XXth Century fades away.

    : (

    (we are getting so old...)

Volkswagen Brazil has announced a Final Edition version of the classic Type 2 Kombi van that has been in continuous production there since 1957.

By the 31st of December 2013 a long journey started in 1947 will come to a conclusion.

    How it all began

The concept for the Type 2 is credited to Dutch Volkswagen importer, Ben Pon. Pon visited Wolfsburg in 1946, intending to purchase Type 1s for import to Holland, when he saw an improvised parts-mover and realized something better was possible, using the stock Type 1 pan.

    How Regretful

That such a great visual artist as Ben Shahn faded into oblivion.

He was very good, wasn't he?

    : (

Here some images of his works, collected here and there: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/

Image above: Farewell to New York - All That is Beautiful, 1965.

He first sketched the van in a doodle, dated April 23, 1947, proposing a payload of 690 kg and placing the driver at the very front.

    Hand Puppets for Felix

Very nice article on Paul Klee's puppets (I didn't know they existed...)

Between 1916 and 1925 Paul Klee made some 50 hand puppets for his son, Felix. He used material from his home for the heads (beef bones, electrical outlets, bristle brushes, nutshells) and sewed costumes

Bayer was both a student and a teacher at the Bauhaus and worked in a wide range of fields including painting, sculpture, typography, advertising and architecture. In his early years as a student he studied painting with Kandinsky, but in just a short while he was teaching one of the Bauhaus' first classes on typography.

    Hong Kong's High Rise

When you first see Michael Wolfs photography, it takes a second to realize what youre looking at.

The multi-colored patterns look almost like an unidentifiable piece of technology, as though a chunk of plastic was plucked out of a motherboard and magnified.

Its only when you begin to notice the windows and balconies and even the occasional person punctuating his frame that you realize youre staring at someones home.

More specifically, youre looking at Hong Kongs colorful high-rises, the most prevalent form of housing in one of the most vertical cities on the planet. In his Architecture of Density project (now a book), Wolf transforms his adoptive home citys ubiquitous architecture into stunning works of art.

    Farmed Here

Occupying 90,000 square feet of a formerly abandoned suburban Chicago warehouse, FarmedHere is not only the first indoor vertical farm of its kind in the nation -- it's also the largest.

Celebrating its grand opening in Bedford Park, Ill., on Friday, FarmedHere utilizes a soil-free, aquaponic process to grow organic greens that are both tastier and more sustainable than traditional farming.

    Chiaturaa

    Stalin's Rope Roads

The mining town of Chiatura, Georgia, surrounded by steep cliffs, is criss-crossed by a network of aging Soviet-era aerial tramways that are still in use today.

In the early 20th century, after the U.S.S.R. annexed Georgia, Soviet authorities were intent on extracting the vast manganese deposits beneath Chiatura.

In the 1950s, planners began work on what locals call the "Kanatnaya Doroga," or "rope road," that still connects almost every corner of the town.

    Aborigines history goes digital.

Artifacts in museums in an effort for preservation are often placed out of reach of the communities with which they are entwined.

One way museums are bridging this divide is digitization, and with this purpose in mind, the South Australian Museum is currently undertaking a massive project to photograph and catalogue each and every one of the objects in their Aboriginal Material Culture Collection.

Florence in 1493. As Seen from Germany.

It takes some time (some years) to appreciate Florence urban structure. I guess I am getting old enough to start to have some vague emotion once there

Florence it's difficult to appreciate (as urban structure). It is not like Rome or Venice. It takes a lot of patience

    Gallery of Lost Art

The Gallery of Lost Art was an immersive, online exhibition that told the stories of artworks that had disappeared. Destroyed, stolen, discarded, rejected, erased, ephemeral some of the most significant artworks of the last 100 years have been lost and can no longer be seen.
