CAMPUS (CONNECTION) IN THIS (ISSUE) You are invited to the inauguration of President Dr. T.J. Arant. (MSM/MLM/MGLM) I hope everyone enjoyed a happy Christmas and began the new year with good health and memories of Christmas with their family members. The Friends University campus looked terrific again for the holidays. Two of the Fine Arts Department’s holiday events at Friends this year were the traditional holiday concert held Nov. 23 and the Christmas Candlelight Concert held the weekend of Dec. 2-4. The Candlelight Concert featured the Singing Quakers, Concert Choir, Women’s Chorus, Madrigals, Kantorei and the 200-voice Choral Union. If you ordered or plan to order a Friends University license plate, a summary of the progress of this endeavor is available online at www.friends.edu/kansas-license-plates. The Alumni Office learned in August that production of the Friends University plates would most likely start after the “go live” date for the state database conversion project. The plates are anticipated for distribution by late March or early April 2012. Individuals, businesses, charities and other groups are using social media today. Friends has a major footprint online. In addition to their Web site, Facebook is used to inform interested persons of coming events and to keep its alumni connected to one another. The Friends University Alumni Facebook group has a large number of members. There were 878 members prior to Christmas and the number grows daily. It is a fun way to keep up with the events at Friends. An example is the note and photographs posted by Alumni Director Lisa Tilma showing Freddy Falcon helping out at the Friends University table at the Jingle Bell Run held Dec. 3 in Wichita. A fun event recently posted was the “Run with Friends” group that has been established by Friends University alumni, faculty, staff and students. A link to their Facebook page with the time and place of their runs was posted. The “Friends University License Plate” also has its own page on Facebook. Actually, doing a search for “Friends University” on Facebook returns a very large number of pages, with some maintained by University staff, others by alumni or friends of Friends University. Please feel free to send me an email with any updates you’d like to share about your family, career or even how you spent your Christmas vacation. Since 1986, Friends University has offered graduate education for professionals ready to take their careers to the next level. Friends University’s graduate offerings have grown from two programs and 41 students to 12 programs and more than 700 students. Currently, graduate students account for more than one-third of enrollment. Looking to the future, “the Graduate school’s next big step is to begin considering doctoral degree programs, as well as adding additional master’s degrees,” said Dr. Evelyn Hume, dean of the Graduate School. In this issue of the Campus Connection class newsletter, we are pleased to spotlight Master of Science in Family Therapy (MSFT) alumna Kim Norwood, M’98.

Kim opened Stepping Stones Counseling Center in July 2011. She has provided individual, couples and family therapy to more than 30 families in the Hutchinson area since then, and has had the opportunity to reach out to the disabled community.

Kim’s experience and education have led her to this point. Early on, she worked as a court probation officer, but soon grew disillusioned with holding people accountable but not providing the help they needed to change. After taking a break in 1985 to raise her children, she was inspired by her pastor to learn about family therapy.

“When I found out about the Friends program, I thought that would be a perfect fit,” Kim said. She said the coursework gave her a broad exposure to the skills she would need later on.

After graduating, she worked 13 years for St. Francis Community Services. Then legislature passed that allowed Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas to recognize and reimburse Marriage and Family Therapists through major insurance companies starting October 2010.

Kim and her husband Randy, a district level administrator in Hutchinson schools, have three grown children and a two-year-old granddaughter. Kim enjoys being able to set her own deadlines so that she can spend time with her family, while also fulfilling her passion of helping people in need.

“I’m loving it,” Kim said.

In this issue of the Campus Connection class newsletter, we are pleased to spotlight Friends University graduate faculty member Dr. Chris Kettler, G’77, and his book titled, “The God who Rejoices: Joy, Despair and the Vicarious Humanity of Christ.”

In this book, Dr. Kettler explores the implications of Christ’s humanity, investigating the paradigms of joy and despair in his experience and ours.

Drawing on wide-ranging resources from Augustine and John Calvin to Bob Dylan, Kettler seeks to bring the meaning of incarnational theology to us by explaining how similar our Christ is to his Christians: filled with real despair and with real joy.

Dr. Kettler is professor of Theology and Philosophy at Friends University and Theologian in Residence at the Church of the Savior in Wichita. He has also written, “The God Who Believes: Faith, Doubt, and the Vicarious Humanity of Christ.”

“The God Who Rejoices” is available at the Friends University bookstore, or on the publisher’s website at www.wipfandstock.com/cascade_books or at www.amazon.com in print or as a Kindle e-book.

Many thanks to everyone who had an opportunity to write the Alumni Office and share all the exciting things that have been happening in your lives since the last issue of Campus Connection.

I am excited to say that with our new layout

of the class newsletters, we received a record number of updates from our readers! Even more exciting is that we were able to spotlight some of our alumni in the various class letters as an opportunity to not only

showcase their accomplishments and talents, but also to hopefully reacquaint them with former classmates and introduce them to you as a new friend or business contact. As I’m sure you’ve heard, it’s not only what you know but who you know in today’s world to be successful. So isn’t it nice to know you will always have Friends?

Best wishes to all our alumni and their families for a blessed New Year - we look forward to seeing you and hearing from you in 2012!
