Residents and business own-ers along the Jersey shoreturned their attention to re-covery efforts from HurricaneSandy yesterday, with manyexpressing optimism thatthings could be back to nor-mal by the weekend.
To review the recovery,President Obama visitedpoints along the shore withNew Jersey Gov. ChrisChristie, speaking with vic-tims and thanking rescuers.Christie has been one of Oba-ma’s most vocal critics, but hehas praised the president andthe Federal Emergency Man-agement Agency for their re-sponse to the Garden State, which was hardest hit.
Thousands were still with-out power and countless resi-dents in coastal communitieswere left homeless.
Ocean City and Sea Isle ex-perienced severe flooding, butthe damage paled in compari-son to some of the northerncoastal communities, accord-ing to Vicki Clark, presidentof the Cape May CountyChamber of Commerce.
“I have spoken with the au-thorities in all our barrier is-land communities and that
the majority feeling is that, bythe weekend, businesses willbe re-opening,” Clark said, noting businesses would de-cide on a case-by-case basis.
The cost of repair is uncer-tain, although estimatesranged in the billions.
While the hybrid stormcaused more damage thanHurricane Irene last year,Sandy’s fall arrival provided asilver lining for some busi-nesses.
Sunny Batag, manager ofSandy Shores Resort on At-
lantic Avenue in North Wild-wood, said his business closedfor the year a few weeks ago.
“If this was in the middleof the summer it really wouldhave been a disaster,” Batagsaid, adding that they havefour to five months before thetourist season starts back up.
Despite the devastation,Clark expressed the resilienceof many in the area.
“We’re ready to get back towork and get things up andrunning,” she said. SOLOMON D. LEACH

New Jersey Gov. ChrisChristie postponed Hal-loween in the Garden Statein the aftermath of Sandy.
Christie signed an executiveorder postponing Halloweenuntil Nov. 5, the AssociatedPress reported. The gover-nor said trick-or-treatingchildren would have facedflooding, downed trees andfallen power lines.
Trying to putpolitics asideIt’s no secret that Obamaand Christie have been po-litical enemies, causingtheir tour yesterday todominate the headlines sixdays before the election.
Christie told Fox Newson Tuesday, “If you thinkright now I give a damnabout presidential politics,
then you don’t know me.”That was before the newsthat he would tour theshore arm-in-arm with Oba-ma.
The White House alsodid its best to diffuse specu-lation that the tour was po-litically motivated.
“This is not a time forpolitics,” White Housespokesman Jay Carney toldreporters on the flight toAtlantic City. METRO/SDL

Babysitter shot dead in front of kidsRIKARD LARMA/METRO
Teenage woman shot in head on West Philly porch She was looking after seven cousins when shot in head
Police are investigating thedeath of a teenage babysitterwho was killed in the Wyn-nefield Heights section of WestPhiladelphia Tuesday night.
Officers said Sherita Hamil-ton, 19, was shot once in thehead while standing in thedoorway of her aunt and un-cle’s home on the 1700 blockof North Aberdeen Street short-ly after 9 p.m. and died onscene.
Investigators do not believethat Hamilton, who lived near-by on the 2100 block of NorthWanamaker Street in Over-brook, was the intended target.
Lt. John Walker of theSouthwest Detective Divisionsaid a young man was beingchased down Aberdeen Streetby two armed men. “Unfortu-nately, he runs up the steps as[Hamilton] is opening the doorof the property she’s babysit-
ting inside,” Walker said. “Theykeep shooting at the houseand she was shot in the head.”
Hamilton’s aunt Paula, whoasked that her last name not beused, said that Hamilton was ather house with her five chil-dren, each between the ages oftwo and 11.
“She was babysitting mykids,” she said. “They saw thewhole thing.”
A memorial of stuffed ani-mals and notes on the porch ofthe home was growing yester-day afternoon as officers con-tinued to interview neighbors. They took one young man
away in a police car, but said hewas not a person of interest inthe crime. Hamilton reportedlyopened the door to a man thatwas attempting to gain insideas he fled from two gunmenjust before she was shot, butpolice said yesterday that theycouldn’t confirm that informa-tion.
“She just started college, nursing school,” Paula said ofher niece yesterday afternoonas tears streamed down herface. “She didn't bother [any-body]. We’ve lived here for 12years and we’ve never had any-thing like this happen.” Shesaid that Hamilton was deeplypassionate about dedicatingher life to the health care pro-fession.
Hamilton’s uncle, who alsolives at the home, declinedcomment. “I’m just too shookup,” he said. ALEX WIGGLESWORTH

President Barack Obama andRepublican Mitt Romney areneck and neck in four of themost hotly contested states innext week’s election, but Oba-ma holds a slight advantage intwo of them, according to aReuters/Ipsos poll released yes-terday.
The online survey of fourbattleground states showedObama leading by 3 percentagepoints in Ohio and 2 points inVirginia. The two are dead evenin Florida, and Romney leadsby 1 percentage point in Col-orado.
The state-level polls do notshow a clear advantage for ei-ther candidate in any of thosestates going into Tuesday’s elec-tion, as each race falls withinthe poll’s credibility interval, the tool used to account for sta-tistical variation in Internet-based polls.
But taken together, they in-dicate that Obama holds aslight edge in the state-by-statebattle to rack up the 270 elec-toral votes needed to controlthe White House.
Since many of the largest
states are considered solidlyDemocratic, Romney needs towin most of the nine or sostates that are considered to betruly competitive in the elec-tion.
For Romney, winning theWhite House without winningOhio will be difficult, and Oba-ma leads there by 48 percent to45 percent among likely voters. That margin is just within thesurvey’s credibility interval of3.8 percentage points.
“That’s enough of a differ-ence to give him an edge, if nota decisive lead,” Ipsos pollsterJulia Clark said.
In Virginia, Obama leads bya narrower margin of 48 per-cent to 46 percent among likelyvoters, within the credibility in-terval of 4.2 percentage points.Among all registered voters,Obama leads by a much widermargin of 54 percent to 37 per-cent.
Colorado is the only state inwhich Romney holds a lead, by46 percent to 45 percent, wellwithin the credibility intervalof 4.1 percentage points.REUTERS

Obama: poll
More than 90 percent ofnorthern Europeans wouldvote for President BarackObama if they were able tocast ballots in the UnitedSates’ election next week be-cause they see Mitt Romneyas too right wing, British poll-
ster YouGov said yesterday.
“By continental Europeanstandards, Obama is consid-ered right-of-centre or evenright-wing,” Joe Twyman, di-rector of Political and SocialResearch at the pollster, toldReuters by telephone, addingthat Romney is simply toomuch of an unknown quantityand too right wing for Euro-pean tastes.

THEWORDMetro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip @dorothyatmetro [email protected]
Gene Hackman reportedlyslapped a homeless man —but before you becomeaghast at the actor’s lack ofsympathy for those less fortu-nate, apparently the home-less man accosted Hackman’swife, Betsy Arakawa, and theactor’s slap was justified.
The story goes like this:Hackman and Arakawa wereleaving a restaurant in NewMexico when the homelessman, Bruce Becker, reported-ly approached the couple. Anargument ensued, culminat-ing with Becker insultingArakawa and Hackman de-fending himself by strikingBecker. The police werecalled, but no charges weremade against Hackman, as itwas determined he acted inself-defense. His rep did notrespond to a request for com-ment. Now the homelessman can claim he wasslapped by Gene Hackman, which is more than the restof us can say. However, wehave homes — so let’s call iteven.
Snooki tosoon besingle?Poor baby Lorenzo LaValle. Notonly does he have an OompaLoompa for a mother, but if Starmagazine is to be believed, thatOompa Loompa will soon beraising him on her own.
The magazine is reportingthat Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, who is currently promoting herMTV spin-off “Snooki andJWoww” and her fiance JionniLaValle are breaking up and areonly together for fame. (Snookiis only doing something for at-tention? You don’t say!)
“Snooki is desperate to stayfamous,” a source told the mag-azine. “She can’t stand to bearound Jionni. She’s only goingto go through with thewedding for a million-dollarpayday.” And Snooki is angry atJionni because “he refuses toeven touch the baby and actslike he can’t hear Lorenzoscreaming for attention,” thesource says. Star says theanimosity between the two areso bad they can’t be in thesame room for one another.
But, of course, they can be
in the same room when thecameras on!
This means that Snooki willsoon have her own spin-off-off(that’s a spin-off of a spin-off)about being a single mom. Thisis great for MTV, as its lineup ofreality TV shows about young, foolish women with bad tansraising babies solo was lookingkinda slim lately.
Hackman rumbleswith homeless man
If Snooki becomes a single mom, does she get another MTV spin-off?
Don’t mess with Gene Hackman.
Three weddingsfor Cyrus andHemsworthMiley Cyrus is going allout when she marriesLiam Hems worth, cele-brating with three lav-ish weddings aroundthe globe, according toStar magazine. Cyrusand Hemsworth, whoannounced theirengagement in June, are said to be planningceremonies in LosAngeles, her nativeTennessee and hishometown ofMelbourne, Australia. All three fetes will takeplace next year — witha different weddingdress for each — andCyrus has reportedlybudgeted $1 millionfor the endeavor.

For many, it’s hard to startover, especially if you’ve beenbetrayed in a previous relation-ship. You don’t have to be acelebrity to ask the question: isyour past interfering with yourpresent?
Take my patient Hillary, forexample. Her boyfriend had
been cheated on by his previ-ous girlfriend. He always wantsto know where Hillary is andwho she is talking to. She hasno intention of hurting him orbeing with another guy, but hisdemands and constant ques-tioning make her feel boxed in.The other day, when an oldfriend called, she didn’t tell herboyfriend — not because shehad anything to hide, but be-cause she was afraid of how hewould react. He found out laterand blew up, angry that shehad kept it from him. Therewas no actual problem, but hewas creating one. His jealousyand accusations were perpetu-ating the very thing he waslooking to avoid.
Take your partner at facevalue. If Hillary had been ableto explain that it was just anold college friend who hadcalled, and her boyfriend hadbeen able to listen and believe
it, things would have gonesmoother. Look at the consis-tency between what your part-ner says and what he or shedoes. My patient wasn’t makingany moves to be with someoneelse. If her boyfriend hadn’tbeen carrying over the fearfrom his last heartbreak, hewould have been able to seethat things were good betweenthem. Most importantly, focuson the present, not the past orthe future.

Gerard Butler’s hanging 10The adventurous actor had to learn to surf with
the best of them for his latest, ‘Chasing Mavericks’
Gerard Butler had only themost basic appreciation forsurfing before he set to workon “Chasing Mavericks” — andthat’s putting it mildly.
“I had surfed about three orfour times in my life,” Butleradmits. The Scottish actorknew he’d have to amp up hisgame if he wanted to properlycapture the essence of surfinggreat Frosty Hesson, whotaught teenager Jay Moriarity(played by newcomer JonnyWeston in the film) to ride Mav-ericks, the most dangerouswaves in the country.
Not one to shy away from achallenge, Butler dove right in— and paid for it with an epicwipeout. “Jonny Weston and Iboth surfed Mavericks. It waswhere I was taken down,” But-
ler says with a coy smile. Get-ting pulled under a wall of wa-ter, his admiration for whatthese athletes do only intensi-fied. “It taught me a lesson. It’snot a pleasant experience,” heoffers. Even though that mo-ment sent him to the hospital,Butler marveled at the sport’sability to foster a Zen-like feel-ing in the surfers as they ridethese monsters of water.
“It’s incredibly meditativeand spiritual,” Butler explains.“I found the whole experiencereally transformative.” NED EHRBAR/MWN
HighhopesNow that Butler has the experi-ence under his belt, he looks
back fondly on the moment heknew that “Chasing Mavericks”would be his next film — whichhappened to coincide with acompletely different kind of les-son. “I was learning to fly a heli-copter along the coast. I saw all
the guys on surfboards. I waslike, ‘What am I thinking? I needto get a place in Malibu and Ineed to take this movie andlearn how to surf!’” Butler says.“I touched down and calledthem and said, ‘Let’s do it!’”
JEFFREY MAYER/WIREIMAGE
Gerard Butler stars as surfing great Frosty Hesson in “Chasing Mavericks.”
Challenges
on shore
The second challenge facingthe actor was portraying areal-life individual, and But-ler wanted to do Hesson jus-tice as a complex individual.“He’s a very philosophicalcharacter, and he’s well-read.So I wanted to play that guywho enjoys that, but at thesame time, he harbors a lotof pain,” Butler says. “There’sthe person you experience, but he also now knows thestories being told abouthim.”
“When you get up onthat wave andbecome one with it,you just become onewith nature.”BUTLER

But Romney got it completely wrong.Although Chrysler and General Mo-tors received two rounds of bailoutsbefore both companies ultimatelyfiled for bankruptcy in mid-2009,
the American automotive industry emergedwith surging sales and renewed profitability.
Romney’s fearmongering in opposition tothe auto bailouts has cost him with auto work-ers in Ohio – likely to be the most crucial of allswing states. Auto workers’ skepticism of MittRomney is certainly justified, but not for thereasons most might think.
You see, President Obama actually got itwrong in the third debate: Mitt Romney didnot propose letting the auto industry fail. It iscertainly possible that even with governmentguarantees on lines of credit down the entiresupply chain there simply wouldn’t have beenenough private capital available to keep thingsgoing. But this misses the point. Romney’s sinon the auto bailout was far worse than merelyfavoring private financing over public.
Romney argued that the auto industry was
doomed to failure because auto workers’salaries and benefits grew so large that itbecame impossible to compete. Romneywarned that auto workers must accept “sanityin salaries and perks.” Mitt Romney blamedthe failure of the American auto industry onthe auto workers, so he proposed to save it bycrushing them.
Without those governmentbailouts, Chrysler and GMwould have been forced to en-ter bankruptcy immediatelyand suspend production indefi-
nitely. With hundreds of thousands of autoworkers in limbo, the unions would havefaced pressure to give massive concessions inbankruptcy negotiations. By allowing the au-to workers to continue working, the bailoutsbought enough time for the unions to negoti-ate a fair deal for their workers.
This is the real reason why Mitt Romney op-posed bailing out the auto industry beforebankruptcy – doing so would spoil a golden op-portunity to stick it to the auto workers. It’sfitting then that Ohio auto workers aremaking the most of their opportunity to stickit to Mitt Romney.

3Reid: Vick stillEagles startingquarterbackThe long, drawn-out saga isover and the answer is the oneeveryone expected. Mike Vickremains the starting quarter-back for the Eagles. CoachAndy Reid ended the quasi-controversy when he releaseda statement yesterday con-firming the decision.
Rumors ran wild after Sun-day’s loss to Atlanta, whenReid said he was evaluatingeverything and everybody, in-cluding the quarterback posi-tion. When asked about it,Vick fueled the flames.
“Obviously he’s thinkingabout making a change at thequarterback position,” Vicksaid. “The thing I do know, and I’ll go watch the film andevaluate myself, is that I’mgiving us every opportunity towin. I’m trying my hardest. Some things don’t go right, when I want them to, somethings do. So if that’s a deci-
sion that coach wants tomake, then I support it.”
Of course, looking at Vick’snumbers, you understand whythe question has been raised. The quarterback has complet-ed 157-of-266 passes for 1,823yards and nine touchdowns. However, his eight intercep-tions and nine lost fumbles isnot acceptable. Vick’s 78.6 rat-ing also ranks 25th amongNFL quarterbacks.
Nick Foles, the rookie back-up fans are calling for, has yetto start a regular-season gameafter providing some high-light-reel plays in preseason.
The Eagles have been offsince Sunday’s loss, but hit thefield today for practice. Reidand Vick are both expected toaddress the medi before thatsession in South Philly.
Head coach shoots down controversy No. 7 will beunder center Monday Team back to work today
Vick will be the starting quarterback Monday night in New Orleans.

Matter ofpride forthese Birds? There might be no “I” inteam, but there is a huge“I” in pride. That’ssomething the Eaglesdidn’t display Sunday.
One of the trademarksof Reid’s tenure has beenbouncing back from losses, fighting to the final whis-tle and respecting thewings on the helmet. Noneof those things wereevident at the Linc as “FireAndy” chants rained down.
“I’m just saying what itlooked like,” said LeSeanMcCoy. “How we played, how the game ended, I did-n’t see any pride. I didn’tsee any heart.” MIKE GREGER
KeepingVick clean
This past Sundaymarked just the sec-ond time this seasonVick didn’t commit aturnover, yet the Ea-gles still lost. Here’sa look back at hisclean games:
Sept. 30 vs. Giants:Vick posts a 99.4 QBrating in 19-17 win.He threw for onetouchdown.
Oct. 28 vs. Falcons:Vick didn’t fumbleor throw a pick, butplayed an averagegame (84.3 rating in30-17 loss).

Sixers pay tribute to Iguodala, swingman praises old teamAndre Iguodala was back intown last night, making hisdebut for the Denver Nuggets. His old team, the Sixers, hon-ored his eight seasons herewith a tribute video duringthe game’s first timeout.
(And yes, he got booed thenand every time he touched theball in last night’s game, which ended too late).
Before the game, Iguodalatook some time to reflect onhis career. Previously, he hadcriticized the organization, coaches and fans. But Iguodalaactually praised the Sixers, es-
pecially their new additions.“They play similar to how
George Karl wants us to playmoving the ball up and downespecially with [Andrew]
Bynum out,” Iguodala said.“They have some great shoot-ers in Dorell Wright and JasonRichardson, and Nick Young isprobably one of the best shot
makers in the league as far ashim being able to get his shotoff at any time.”
When pressed about thetrade and Sixers fans, Iguodalatook the high road.
“You roll with the punches. You play the cards you’re dealtand I am just looking forwardto a new challenge, a newchapter,” he said. “I didn’thave any animosity or nega-tive thoughts towards the fanshere. They were great. Theywill still be passionate abouttheir team and that is how itshould be.” METRO
