1A zealous debate is brewingover a new mural in DeweySquare that depicts a large, col-orful character peering outfrom behind a red shirtwrapped around his head.

The controversy began afterBoston’s Fox 25 posted a photo-graph of the 70-by-70-foot mu-ral on its Facebook page Satur-day. About 24 hours later, thepost had racked up about 530racially centered comments, and roughly 100 “shares,” withmany people under the wrongimpression that the character iswearing a Muslim headscarf.

The station posted the pho-to with the caption, “This is anew mural on a Big Dig ventila-tion building. What does it looklike to you?”

Facebook users quickly re-sponded, with several peoplecommenting that it looked like“a terrorist,” many referring di-rectly to Muslims.

James Richards said that itlooked like “a towel head is-lamist holding a gun.” PaulMorceau agreed, saying itlooked like a “Muslim Terror-ist.”

Scott Englehardt weighedin, calling the character “an al-lah loving united states hatingindividual.”

Several people went further, making connections to the 9/11terrorist attacks that originatedat Logan Airport.

“Suprised they did not do aJet. This is a great example ofpure liberal bull. Is the cityproud that the 9/11 monstersloaded up at Logan?” wrote JimDayotas.

Brazilian brothers and graf-fiti artists Gustavo and OtavioPandolfo, known as “OsGemeos,” or “twins” in Por-tuguese, created the temporarymural to promote their exhibi-tion at the Institute of Contem-porary Art.

The subjects of their art-work range from family por-traits to commentary on socialand political circumstances, aswell as Brazilian folklore.

When asked for comment,ICA Spokeswoman Kelly Gif-ford said in an e-mail: “Theseyellow-colored characters arean iconic and recurrent featurein Os Gemeos’ work and are de-picted in a wide variety of situa-tions,” and that “the figures arefrequently shown wearingwhimsical hats, colorful hoodsor scarves — another hallmarkfeature of the artists’ work.”

She went on to say, “OsGemeos hope their mural will

bring color and energy to thestreets of Boston as well as in-spire curiosity and imagina-tion.”

Many of the commentatorsjumped to defend the artists.

“To me, it looks like a sure-fire way to prove how racistand ignorant people are. For ex-amples, see all posts above thisone,” wrote K. Allen Wood.

When asked to comment onthe current controversy, Gif-ford said, “We are not com-menting on Fox’s coverage.”

Fox 25, however, is covering

the controversy brewing on itsFacebook page, and reportedthat the curator of the project,Pedro Alonzo, “can’t believethat’s what people perceivefrom the piece of art. He saysthe character in the mural is alittle boy wearing pajama pantswith a shirt wrapped aroundhis head.”

Mayor Thomas M. Meninocould not be reached for com-ment.

Two people relaxed on the lawn in front of the controversial mural in Dewey Square yesterday.

News in briefScientist: Heat waves arecaused by global warmingThe Texas drought last year, the Russia heat wave in 2010and other extreme weather“certainly would not have oc-curred” without global warm-ing, according to a paper pre-pared by a top U.S. govern-ment climate scientist.

Abnormal weather episodeswere so rare from 1951 to 1980that the recent events can onlybe explained by the effects ofthe increasing accumulation ofcarbon dioxide in the atmos-phere, according to researchpublished today. If carbon emis-sions continue unchecked, such events will become rou-tine, with more extremes com-mon within 50 years.

“We now know that thechances these extreme weatherevents would have happenednaturally — without climatechange — is negligible,” JamesHansen, the top climate-changescientist at the National Aero-

nautics and Space Administra-tion and writer of the paper, said in a statement. “The natu-ral changes in weather fromday to day and year to year[don’t explain those events].”

The paper by Hansen andtwo co-authors, to be publishedin the peer-reviewed Proceed-ings of the National Academyof Sciences, was written beforethe recent record heat waves

and drought across the U.S.Once that data is analyzed, itprobably will show links toglobal warming as well,Hansen wrote in the Washing-ton Post. BLOOMBERG

Environmentalismand religion findcommon ground inhigher educationFor more than seven years,Wake Forest professor Lucas F.Johnston studied the intersec-tion of religious faith and theenvironmental movement. But he often found himselffrustrated by a basic discon-nect: Worldwide, there was arapidly growing effort to linktheology with environmentalconsciousness, but this didn’tappear to reap any measura-ble positives for the planet.

People changed their phi-losophy, but didn’t changetheir behavior.

Now Johnston is at the fore-front of a movement to fur-ther incorporate environmen-tal sustainability into highereducation curricula. But forJohnston, an ideological shiftisn’t good enough. He wantsresults.

“For a long time, the reli-gion and ecology field was, ba-sically, advancing popularizednarratives about why this orthat religious tradition was in-

herently green,” says John-ston. “In a similar fashion, wesaw a lot of anecdotal storiescoming out of higher educa-tion. That’s a good first step.… But now we need to gathersome empirical data. We need

to find out what changes sys-tems and people.”

Johnston recently edited abook that attempts to do justthat. “Higher Education forSustainability: Cases, Chal-lenges, and Opportunities

from Across the Curriculum”was released last week, con-taining some of the most thor-ough research and analysis ongreen courses in higher educa-tion to date.

“Is there a guiding sense ofwhat ‘sustainability’ should bein higher education? On theoperations side — yes. Con-ceptually and practically —no. But I think that’s a goodthing. All sustainable solu-tions are context-dependent.So in this book we’re lookingat specific schools — specificcontexts,” explains Johnston.“Basically, if you take the ideaof sustainability seriously,we’re talking about our sur-vival as a species. We have tothink about educating stu-dents about that, becausemost of them have no sense ofwhat a sustainable societylooks like.”

Economy‘continuing to recover’The White House said on Fri-day that data showing U.S.hiring increased in Julyshowed the economy wascontinuing to recover andstressed the jobless rate was“essentially unchanged”

despite its rise from 8.2percent to 8.3 percent.

“Today’s employmentreport provides furtherevidence that the U.S.economy is continuing torecover from the worstdownturn since the Great De-pression,” Alan Krueger, chair-man of the White HouseCouncil of Economic Advisers, said in a statement.

THEWORDMetro’s Monica Weymouth shares her take on the world of gossip @monicaatmetro [email protected]

Although she could probably af-ford to rent a small state, Kris-ten Stewart has taken refugewith friend Giovanni Agnelli af-ter leaving the house she for-merly shared with Robert Pat-tinson.

Agnelli is not, as his Twitterfeed suggests, a random 16-year-old “Twilight” superfanwith an unhealthy interest inStewart’s sex life. Instead, he’sa friend of the actress who pro-duced her 2010 film “Welcometo the Rileys,” and he’s upsetat how the media is treat-ing his new roomie inthe wake of her affairwith “Snow White”director RupertSanders.

“The spinthat keepsgrowing onthis story isstaggering. There wasno onset af-fair. Stop print-

ing lies,” he posted to Twitter, where he’s been on a pro-Kris-ten campaign for weeks.

Robert Pattinson, who ishiding out at Reese Wither-spoon’s ranch, isn’t quite buy-ing Agnelli’s line about Stewartbeing “like a little sister” tohim.

“Rob knows Agnelli and hasbeen calling him a lot sinceKristen has been there,” asource tells RadarOnline. “Hewants to know why Kristen isstaying there at his house. He issuper angry now and has ac-cused Giovanni of sleepingwith Kristen, too.”

Kristen, for her part, is alsostill pretending that she isn’tvery rich, very young or verygood looking and is obedientlymoping around the house.“Kristen hasn’t showered orchanged or washed her hair inseveral days,” the source tellsRadar. “She is laying around inher T-shirt and shorts and eat-ing ice cream.”

At least shestill dreamsKendall Jenner — betterknown as the Kardashian’stall half-sister — doesn’twant to be just any runwaymodel. “I want to be thenext Gisele Bundchen,” shetells E! Online. “Everythingshe does, who she is, whatshe’s done, she’s justamazing.”

Kendall, honey, wewant to be the nextPhilip Roth. But take itfrom us — hangingaround with the Kar-dashians for too longis dream poison.

For an ambitious studentwith the right combina-tion of talent and pa-tience, court reporting

may be a career worth consid-ering.

But reaching 225 words perminute on a stenotype is nowalk in the park, and it’s hardto know if you have what ittakes before committing to thetraining.

“It’s not for everyone.Speaking very bluntly, youhave to be a nervous wreck. You are sitting at the edge ofyour seat. You have to get everyword, every utterance,” saysPatti Blair, who owns her ownChicago-based court reporting

business and has been a li-censed court reporter for 47years. “If you’re a laid-back per-son, this profession is not foryou.”

Qualified individuals canearn the National CourtReporters Association’sRegistered ProfessionalReporter credential by pass-ing a rigorous test; their dicta-tion speeds must exceed 200words per minute.

“There’s always peoplethat drop out, just like anycollege — but not necessarilybecause they can’t do thespeed,” says Cohen.

Orleans Technical Institutein Philadelphia offers a two-

to three-year program that in-cludes the RPR exam, thoughthe school was unable to spec-ify how many students passthe test. However, MarleneCohen — an employment spe-cialist from Orleans — wasquick to point out that pass-ing the RPR is not required forall professional positions inthe field. Those who perse-vere through the training canstill seek employment.

“For anyone who is reallytruly driven and interested indoing this, I think the firstcourse would let them knowif they could handle thespeed,” adds Blair. “But Iwould say they need to stick itout until they start taking dic-tation — about four to sixweeks.”

$48,530As of 2010, per the U.S.Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were about 22,000court reporters employednationwide. The medianannual pay was $48,530as of 2011. From 2010-2020, growth in this fieldwill be about 14%.

Caitlin Day, education and out-reach manager at CareerWardrobe. “Your co-workersand supervisors were new oncetoo, and should be able to offeryou tips on how to fit into yournew environment as well as an-swer questions about yourrole.” It’s expected that yourely on co-workers to help youunderstand the new position,so take advantage of their ex-pertise.

Allow yourself time to focuson your new position withoutgetting distracted by outsidefactors. Michael Timmes, HRspecialist at Insperity, suggeststhat you “reach out to familyand friends to let them knowthat your schedule is changingand that you may not be as ac-

His analogy (imagining asports coach as NATO com-mander — which is obvious-ly ridiculous) is absolutelyon point. Just because Rom-

Away from the hustleand bustle of OlympicVillage in East London,U.S. athletes can quiet-

ly and privately retreat to USAHouse.

The USOC staked its claimto an area of London’s RoyalCollege of Art across fromHyde Park in April 2011. Thestate-of-the-art facility servesas a more secluded area forathletes and their families, aswell as VIP ticket holders anddonors.

Decorated with sponsor-themed lounges, USA House isequipped with a gourmet cafe-teria, several bars, meetingrooms, a team shop — andplenty of tight security.

It may be the USA House, but it’s definitely not open toall citizens of the USA. USOCofficials say the decision tokeep the facility private cameafter athletes wanted it thatway.

“It did come from the re-quest of our athletes manygames ago, who wanted an ad-ditional area of refuge,” USOCdirector of marketing andevent services Lisa Reliford toldMetro during a closely watchedmedia tour. “They don’t get tosee their parents a lot [in theOlympic Village]. The minutethey get out of the Village, everybody wants to be aroundthem and to get their auto-graphs. So this is an area wherethey can just come and decom-press.

“The whole house justchants ‘USA,’ and it’s so excit-ing,” Reliford said.

NEVER PAINT AGAIN

RHINO SHIELD

Bobby V. avoidsthe axe (again)Whether it was just sports ra-dio banter or not this pastweekend, the axe sure seemedready to fall on Red Sox man-ager Bobby Valentine today.

Things looked to have bot-tomed out for the third timethis season Saturday nightwhen Boston blew anothersolid start from Clay Buchholzand the lowly MinnesotaTwins came back from a fiverun deficit to win the thirdgame in a row at Fenway.

Had the Red Sox not won

yesterday, there would havebeen an early October 2011feel to things around townthis morning.

The win bought Valentineanother day, if not anothertwo weeks. But this pattern ofhope (four-game win streak),despair (three-game losingstreak) and last-gasp victories(Sunday) is one all too familiarto Sox fans in 2012.

Bobby V. saved

The Red Sox avoided afour-game sweep at thehands of the Twins Sundaywith a 6-4 victory.

Adrian Gonzalez drove inthree runs, two coming via afifth-inning home run.Franklin Morales allowed justthree hits and one run oversix innings.
