“Wehavetheabilitytoplayatahighlevel,butlastseasonwedidnotdoitconsistently,”saidheadcoachTammy Swearingen.“Weneedtostayfocusedwithapositivecompetitiveattitude.”UnderSwearingen,theTitanshavehad13seasonswith20ormorewinsandapairof30-winseasons.“Inordertobesuccessful,youneedto

Success StoriesVolleyball: Taylor Frank Raises Funds for Good Cause

Forthepasttwoyears,WestminsterCollegefreshmanvolleyballplayerTaylorFrankhastakenhereffortsoffofthecourttohelporganizeanannualbenefittoraisemoneyandawarenessfortheBrainAneurysmFoundation.

Theeventisa5KracecalledTheBunnyHopthatisheldinhonorofFrank’smother,BeckyFrank,whopassedawayfromabrainaneurysm.Thisyear’seventraised$10,000andhad430participants.TaylorhelpsorganizetheeventwithhersisterCarly,herfatherTim,alongwithseveralfriendsofthefamily.

“TheeventtousismostlyawaytogivebacktotheBrainAneurysmFoundationforallthattheydidforuswhilemymomwassickforjustashorttime,”Taylorsaid.“Whenmymomwasfirstdiagnosedwiththebrainaneurysm,itwastoolatebecauseithadalreadyruptured.WehonestlyhadnocluewhatitreallymeantandtheBrainAneurysmFoundationwebsitegaveussomegreatinsightastowhatitwas.”

“Wereallyenjoycelebratingmymom’slifethroughtheevent,andsimplybythenumberofpeoplewecantellhowmanypeoplereallydidcareaboutmymomandhowmanypeopleshehelpedthroughoutherlife,”Taylorsaid.

TheFrankfamilycontinuesitseffortstoincreaseawarenessaboutbrainaneurysmsthroughtheirsupportoftheBrainAneurysmFoundationsothatotherfamiliescanbeknowledgeableofpossiblesymptoms.

“TheBunnyHopisalsoawaytospreadawarenessaboutbrainaneurysmswhichismostimportantindiagnosingthem,”Taylorsaid.“TheBrainAneurysmFoundationistheworld’sonlynonprofitorganizationsolelydedicatedtoprovidingcriticalawareness,education,supportandresearchfundingtoreducetheincidenceofbrainaneurysmruptures.”

Women’s Volleyball Earn AVCA Team Academic Award for 2011-2012

TheAmericanVolleyballCoachesAssociation(AVCA)announcedonJuly20,2012that533teamshaveearnedtheAVCATeamAcademicAwardforthe2011-2012season.HelpingtheAVCAachieveanewall-timehighfortheawardwasWestminsterCollege.TheLadyTitans,undertheguidanceof20th-yearheadcoachTammy Swearingen,have

earnedtheprogram’sfirstAVCATeamAcademicAward.

Theaward,whichwasinitiatedinthe1992-93academicyear,honorscollegiateandhighschoolvolleyballteamsthatdisplayedexcellenceintheclassroomduringtheschoolyearbymaintain-ingatleasta3.30cumulativeteamgradepointaverageona4.0scaleora4.10cumulativeteamGPAona5.0scale.

TheTeamAcademicAwardhasbecomeoneoftheAVCA’sfast-estgrowingawardsprograms,seeinganimpressivesurgeinteamshonoredoverthepastseveralyears.Sincethe2000-2001season,thenumberofrecipientshasincreasedeverysingleyearbutone,whileamassinganoverall200percentincreaseoverthespanofthelastdecade.Sincetheaward’sinceptionin1993,theawardhasrisenbyanastounding760percent.

Towering Titan Organization (TTO),formedin1976aroundacoreofdevoted,loyalandintenselyinterestedalumni,parentsandfriends.Theorganizationpurposesitselftohelpmaintain,improveandendowWestminsterCollege’sathleticprograms.

Over$3millioningiftshavebeencontributedtotheTower-ingTitanFundsinceitsinception.

Theannualincomeisdistributedinthismanner:90percentofalldonationsgodirectlytothesport(s)chosen(donationscanbedesignatedtoaspecificsportformenorwomen),with10percentgoingtowardstheoperationandpromotionofthefund.All20varsitysportsformenandwomenbenefitfromthefund.

atraditionofwinning.AlthoughtheCollegewasfoundedin1852,varsityathleticsatWestminsterdidnotbecomeprevalentuntil1884.Beginningin1926,thesportsteamsatWestminsterbecameknownasthe“Titans,”afterasportswriterforthestudentnews-paper,The Holcad,nicknamedtheresurgentbasketballteamthe“ToweringTitans”becauseofyounger,tallermenthatmadeupthestartinglineup.TheathleticsprogramatWestminsterbecamebestknownforthesuccessofitsfootballandmen’sbasketballteams.TheTitanfootballteamwonsixNAIANationalChampionshipsfrom1970-94and71%(398-157-10)ofitsgamessince1952.Themen’sbasketballteam,honoredbytheAssociated Pressasthenation’stopsmallcollegeteamin1962,wastheall-timewinningestNAIAteambeforeWestmin-sterjoinedtheNCAAin1998.
