While tying the best start in team history, the West-minster College baseball team nearly equaled its win total from the entire previous season in the first month of the 2011 season. That alone would signify a turnaround season, but the Titans didn’t stop there. Westminster, under the guidance of vet-eran head coach Carmen Nocera, tied for the second most wins in program history before finishing second in the Presidents’ Athletic Confer-ence (PAC), the team’s high-est finish since it last won the league in 2005.

Westminster started the 2011 season winning its first 12 games including a perfect 10-0 in games played at Fort Pierce, Fla. The 12-0 start tied the 1995 team for the best start in team history. The Titans easily surpassed their

win total from 2010 when they posted 14 wins. The Titans fin-ished the season with a 25-16 record, tying the 2003 team (25-13) for the second-most wins in team history and falling two shy of the 1982 team that went 27-8.

The Titans quali-fied for the PAC tour-nament for the fourth time in five years by posting a 10-11 conference record. The fourth seed in the PAC tournament, Westminster upset top-seed Grove City in the first round and later eliminat-ed Grove City, but the Titans lost twice to defending-cham-pion Thomas More including a loss in the championship round.

Senior first baseman Tim Wiand looks to follow-up on an impressive 2011 season. Wiand was named first-team All-PAC, and he led Westminster with a .434 batting average (53-122) last year, and set a school record with 19 doubles (first in PAC).

Sophomore infielder Chris

Ross looks to build on a solid freshman season in 2011. He batted .314 (33-105) and had 15 RBI’s.

On the mound the Titans bring back seniors Vince Iosue and Patrick Mulligan. Iosue led the Titans with a 4.82 earned run average and finished the season with a re-cord of 4-3. Mulligan finished the season with a 7-3 record and 4.84 earned run average.

The Titans open season play in the Florida Coast Spring Training from March 4-9 in Fort Pierce, Florida. The first game at Westmin-ster Field will be on March 23 versus PAC foe Thiel with a 4 p.m.

Westminster College has a proud athletics heri-tage that is steeped with

a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a sportswriter for the student news-paper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westmin-ster joined the NCAA in 1998.

In the 2010-11 academic year there were 389 varsity athletes at Westminster, including 52 multi-sport athletes. One in four

undergraduate students at West-minster is a varsity athlete. There are currently 20 varsity sports teams at Westminster that com-pete in Presidents’ Athletic Confer-ence (PAC) and NCAA Division III. In the last seven years, 10 West-minster teams have either quali-fied for the NCAA Tournament or sent athletes to the NCAA Cham-pionship meet. Westminster joined the NCAA Division III and the PAC in 2000-01 and became eligible for championships and awards in 2002-03.

Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercolle-giate athletics and the pursuit of

academic excellence.Comprised of 10 select private

colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel Col-lege, Thomas More College, Washington and Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself.

The PAC expanded to seven mem-bers in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly an NCAA Division III inde-pendent. Saint Vincent College, a former NAIA member, joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07. Another former NAIA member, Geneva College, became the conference’s ninth mem-ber and began league play as it started NCAA Division III provisional member-ship in 2007-08. Chatham University became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08.

The PAC annually crowns cham-pions in 19 sports. In 2009-10, the conference had 34 teams represent the conference in postseason play, including 21 in NCAA Championship events. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification (AQ) status for most NCAA Division III national championship events.

All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships.

The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Washing-ton & Jefferson and Grove City College men and Westminster College women captured the 2009-10 trophies.

True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Amer-icans and NCAA Postgraduate Schol-arship winners. Last year, the league named a record 642 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

Located adjacent to Memorial Field House and Burry Stadium, the Westminster baseball diamond has been the home of the Titans

throughout the program’s history. The field’s unusual dimensions are 370 feet down the right field line, 360 feet to center field, and 340 feet down the left field line. The field’s signature feature is in left field, as home runs routinely find their way into Brittain Lake. The field underwent extensive renovations in 2004, including the addition of new dugouts, bullpen areas, a new backstop and completion of the right field fence.
