2012 Preview: While tying the best start in team history, the Westminster College baseball team nearly equaled its win total from the entire previous season in the first month of the 2011 season. That alone would signify a turnaround season, but the Titans didn’t stop there. Westminster, under the guidance of veteran head coach Carmen Nocera, tied for the second most wins in program history before finishing second in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), the team’s highest finish since it last won the league in 2005.

Westminster started the 2011 season winning its first 12 games including a perfect 10-0 in games played at Fort Pierce, Fla. The 12-0 start tied the 1995 team for the best start in team history. The Titans easily surpassed their win total from 2010 when they posted 14 wins. The Titans finished the season with a 25-16 record, tying the 2003 team (25-13) for the second-most wins in team history and falling two shy of the 1982 team that went 27-8.

The Titans qualified for the PAC tournament for the fourth time in five years by posting a 10-11 conference record. The fourth seed in the PAC tourna-ment, Westminster upset top-seed Grove City in the first round and later eliminated Grove City, but the Titans lost twice to defending-champion Thomas More including a loss in the championship round.

Senior first baseman Tim Wiand looks to follow-up on an impressive 2011 season. Wiand was named first-team All-PAC, and he led Westminster with a .434 batting average (53-122) last year, and set a school record with 19 doubles (first in PAC). Sophomore infielder Chris Ross looks to build on a solid freshman season in 2011. He batted .314 (33-105) and had 15 RBI’s.

On the mound the Titans bring back seniors Vince Iosue and Patrick Mulligan. Iosue led the Titans with a 4.82 earned run average and finished the season with a record of 4-3. Mulligan finished the season with a 7-3 record and 4.84 earned run average.

The Titans open season play in the Florida Coast Spring Training from March 4-9 in Fort Pierce, Florida. The first game at Westminster Field will be on March 23 versus PAC foe Thiel with a 4 p.m.
