2013-14 Roster Season OutlookThe2013-14Westminster Collegemen’sbasketballteamreturnsfivelettermenfromlastseason,includingseniorandthree-yearstarter,Anthony Thomas.ThomaswasanAll-PACHonorableMentionhonoreelastseason,averaging14.6pointspergamewhichstoodsixthinthePresidents’AthleticConference(PAC).ThomasalsorankedfirstinthePACaveraging4.0assistspergameandfirstinassist/turnoverratio(1.7).Heentershisseniorseasonwith950careerpointsand265assists. “IexpectAnthonytobeagreatleader,”saidsecondyearheadcoachKevin Siroki.“HehasworkedhardalloffseasonandIknowheisreadytoleadourteamthisyeartonewheights.Hisleadershipwillbeabigkeytoourseason.”
SophomorePaul Carswell,whohadanimpressiveseasonasafreshman,joinsThomasastheonlyreturningstarters.Carswellplayedinall25games,whilestartingin12.Hestoodfourthontheteaminreboundsandpoints,averaging5.6and8.8,respectively. Althoughtherearekeyplayerslostfromlastyearduetograduation,therearemanythatSirokiishopingtoseestepupastheygetmoreplayingtimethisseason.SeniorNate Herrmannwillbepushingforplayingtime,alongwithjuniorsEvan HarvilleandMike Matisi. “Natewillgiveusmuchneededperimetershootingthisyear,”saidSiroki.“Also,EvanandMike,willgiveusdepthattheguardpositions.I’mlookingforwardtoseeingalloftheseplayerscontributethisyear.” TheTitanswilllooktotheirninenewcomerstostepupandmakeanimmediateimpactthisseason,includingseniorSteve Cress who returnstothecourtafterbattlingcancerlastyear.Cress,nowcancerfree,willbeabletoreturnfortheSpringsemester. “Wehavealotofguysthatcanplaymultiplepositionsthatwebelievewillcausesomematch-upproblemsforteams,”Sirokiadded.“Withthatbeingsaid,ourplayershavetakenourteammotto“FAMILY”toheart.Thatalone,Ibelieve,willmakeahugedifferenceinthePACstandingsforusthisyear.”

PriortohisarrivalatWestminster,StittservedasvarsityassistantcoachandprogramcoordinatoratHowlandLocalSchoolDistrictfrom1986-1993.SittthenbecamethevarsityassistantcoachatWarrenCitySchoolsfrom1994-1999.
Currently,StittisassistantandelementaryprincipalfortheBoardmanLo-calSchoolDistrict.Stiitearnedhisbachelor’sdegreeinelementaryeducationfromYoungstownStateUniversityin1994.Healsoreceivedamaster’sdegreeinadministrationfromAshlandUniversityin1999.

WestminsterCollegebeganplayingbasketballin1897,butmanagedonly
a109-135recorduntilJohnLawthertookoverin1926andbegantolaythegroundworkformorethansixdecadesofwinninghoops.Lawthercoachedthroughthe1935-36season,steppingdownfromthehelmwithacareerrecordof164-44,includinga37-33winoverSt.John’sinthefirstcollegiatedoubleheaderplayedatMadisonSquareGardenonDec.29,1934.
GeorgeRoarkthensteppedinforaseasonandledtheTi-tanstoa14-7campaignbeforethenextgreatWestminstermen-tor,GroverWashabaugh,signedonfora19-seasonstint.Underhisguidance,Titanbasketballcontinuedtoflourish,compilinga297-129record.TheteamevenearnedaninvitationtotheNITin1941,whereitputupquiteascrapbeforesuccumbingtoClair
Bee’sLongIslandUniversityteam,48-36.ThecaptainofthatNITteam,C.G.“Buzz”Ridl,succeeded
Washabaughascoachin1956and,likehistwopredecessors,keptTitanbasketballnearthetopofthesmall-collegeheap.Ridl’sTitansposteda216-91record,advancingtwicetotheNAIAchampionshipgame,andtwicetothesemifinals.Overall,Ridl,whowasselectedasoneoffivecoachesontheNAIAGoldenAnniversaryAll-Starbasketballteamin1986,tookhisteamtothenationaltournamentsixtimes.And,in1962,RidlsawhisTitanshonoredbybothwireservicesasthenation’stopsmall-collegebasketballteam.
In1968,however,RidlmovedontotheUniversityofPittsburghandatwo-timeAll-AmericanfromRidl’s‘62squad,C.RonaldGalbreath,tookoverthereins.
Initially,GalbreathcoachedforonlyoneseasonbeforemovingontoClarionforfiveyears,buthereturnedagainin1974.Inthe1996-97season,Galbreathpostedhis500thcareervictory,becomingjustthe36thactivecoachatthattimeatanyleveltoreachthatmark.CountinghisfiveseasonsatClarion,heconcludedhisTitanmen’sbasketballcoachingcareerwith523careerwins,andistheall-timeleaderinwinsatWestminsterwith448.
WhenWestminsterlefttheNAIAin1998theTitansweretheall-timewinningestbasketballprogramintheNAIAwith1,299wins.Now,inNCAADivisionIIItheTitansexpecttocon-tinuetorecordvictoriestoremainoneofthewinningestcollegebasketballprogramsinanydivisionoratanylevelinthenation.

atraditionofwinning.AlthoughtheCollegewasfoundedin1852,varsityathleticsatWestminsterdidnotbecomeprevalentuntil1884.Beginningin1926,thesportsteamsatWestminsterbecameknownasthe“Titans,”afterasportswriterforthestudentnews-paper,The Holcad,nicknamedtheresurgentbasketballteamthe“ToweringTitans”becauseofyounger,tallermenthatmadeupthestartinglineup.TheathleticsprogramatWestminsterbecamebestknownforthesuccessofitsfootballandmen’sbasketballteams.TheTitanfootballteamwonsixNAIANationalChampionshipsfrom1970-94and71%(398-157-10)ofitsgamessince1952.Themen’sbasketballteam,honoredbytheAssociated Pressasthenation’stopsmallcollegeteamin1962,wastheall-timewinningestNAIAteambeforeWestmin-sterjoinedtheNCAAin1998.

Towering Titan OrganizationProvidingsupportforWestminster’sathleticprogramsisthe
Towering Titan Organization (TTO),formedin1976aroundacoreofdevoted,loyalandintenselyinterestedalumni,parentsandfriends.Theorganizationpurposesitselftohelpmaintain,improveandendowWestminsterCollege’sathleticprograms.
Over$3millioningiftshavebeencontributedtotheTower-ingTitanFundsinceitsinception.
Theannualincomeisdistributedinthismanner:90percentofalldonationsgodirectlytothesport(s)chosen(donationscanbedesignatedtoaspecificsportformenorwomen),with10percentgoingtowardstheoperationandpromotionofthefund.All20varsitysportsformenandwomenbenefitfromthefund.
