COLLEGIATE SYNCHRONIZED SKATING

Skaters from different backgrounds find that there is no experience quite like being a member of a collegiate synchronized skating team. Synchronized skating veterans around the country are teaming up with freestyle skaters and ice dancers who are trying this exciting sport for the first time. College teams generally compete in one of three U.S. Figure Skating divisions: collegiate, open collegiate or senior.

Collegiate synchronized skating teams compete in non-qualifying, qualifying and intercollegiate competitions. Teams that compete in the senior division are eligible to be selected for U.S. Figure Skating’s international envelope system and may represent the United States at international events. Synchronized skating is now an event at the World University Games, and only teams made up of student-athletes may represent the United States at this prestigious international competition.

There are a number of ways teams can be structured on college campuses. Some are club sports, some are student organizations or activities and there are a few that are varsity sports.

In 2011, 40 teams competed in U.S. qualifying competitions in the collegiate and open collegiate divisions. At the 2011 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships, two universities were represented in the senior division and one was repre-sented in the junior division.

WHAT ABOUT THE OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES?

Synchronized skating is the newest discipline of figure skat-ing. It was first recognized by the ISU in 1994, and the first world championships were held in 2000.

It is the only figure skating discipline not yet part of the Olympic Winter Games.

There are no immediate plans or timetable for the sport’s inclusion. In order for a sport to be added, it first must be recommended by the sport’s international governing body, in this case the International Skating Union (ISU), to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This has not yet happened, as the sport needs further development and exposure around the world. However, with the popularity of the figure skating disciplines that are a part of the Olympic Winter Games, there is a bright future for synchronized skating.

U.S. Figure Skating’s approach has been to put efforts into building the strongest U.S. program possible so that when/if synchronized skating is included in the Olympic Winter Games, U.S. teams will be prepared to stand on the podium.

SYNCHRONIZED SKATING AROUND THE WORLD

Synchronized skating started in the United States, but it has quickly spread around the world. In the past several years, 20 countries on five continents have participated in either the World Challenge Cup for Juniors or the World Synchronized Skating Championships. The Scandinavian countries have dominated the World Synchronized Skating Championships, winning 10 of the 11 World titles that have been awarded since the first event in 2000. Canada is the only other country to have reached the top of the podium, earning the 2009 World title. The United States is a strong presence on the World scene, having captured the silver medal at the 2007 World Synchronized Skating Championships, the bronze medal at the 2011 and 2010 World Synchronized Skating Championships and the bronze medal at the 2007 and 2006 World Challenge Cup for Juniors.

Synchronized skating is a highly technical form of team skating characterized by speed, accuracy, intricate forma-tions and transitions. Teams of 8–20 skaters perform side by side on the ice. At the junior and senior levels, teams perform one 2:50 short program and one 4:00 or 4:30 free skate in competition.

COMPETITIVE LEVELSThere are eight competitive levels for synchronized skating within the U.S. Figure Skating structure:• Juvenile • Senior• Intermediate • Collegiate• Novice • Adult• Junior • Masters The juvenile through senior levels are skill-based, and all members on a team must pass level-specific moves in the field tests to participate in that discipline. The collegiate level is for college teams, while the masters and adult levels are for skaters aged 25 and 21 and over, respectively. In addition, there are seven developmental levels that pre-pare athletes for competition at the national level.

COMPETITIONS & QUALIFYINGTeams can participate in any nonqualifying competitions they choose to enter. Those teams wishing to compete in the U.S. Figure Skating qualifying pipeline must start at their sectional championships. By finishing in the top four at their sectional, teams in the competitive levels above qualify for the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships. Based on performances and placements from this event, teams are nominated to the U.S. Synchronized Skating Team and assigned to international competitions.

MEMBERSHIPThe membership of U.S. Figure Skating, at over 180,000 members, has embraced synchronized skating as more than 580 teams register and compete each year.

The short program for synchronized skating is a 2:50 program that includes required elements. Deductions are taken in the final score if these elements are not included. The order is optional.

Like all disciplines of figure skating, synchronized skating has transitioned to the international judging system (IJS). All intermediate, novice, junior, senior, collegiate and adult events are judged under this system.

Each level in synchronized skating has a defined “well-bal-anced program” that contains a set number of prescribed elements each team must perform in its free skate. Teams are given a technical elements score based on the speci-fied difficulty and execution of those prescribed elements. Teams may perform additional elements; however, these will not be taken into consideration in their technical ele-ments score. Teams are also given a program components score which takes into consideration skating skills, transitions, performance, choreography and musical interpretation. For levels judged under the old 6.0 system, the panel of judges will award two marks based on those concepts.

The IJS has two panels: A technical panel and a judging panel. The technical panel consists of a technical controller, a technical specialist and assistant technical specialist. This panel identifies the difficulty of each of the prescribed ele-ments in the program. That difficulty level corresponds to a point value for each of the elements. The judging panel, which consists of three to seven judges, evaluates how well each of the elements was done on a scale of -3 to +3. A trimmed mean of the judges’ grades of execution for each element is factored with the points awarded for difficulty. Finally, each judge also gives a program components mark ranging from 0.25-10.00 for each of the following areas: skating skills, transitions, performance/execution, choreog-raphy and musical interpretation. Again, a trimmed mean is taken for each of the five components.

The total score for each team is computed by taking the technical elements score (the total points the team earned for difficulty factored with their grade of execution for each of their well-balanced program elements) and add-ing it to their program components score (the total of the trimmed mean for each of the five program components).

Teams at the junior and senior levels compete both a short program and a free skate. The points earned for each seg-ment of the competition are added together for the final result. Teams in all other levels perform only a free skate.

TOTAL SCORE

The short program and free skate are typically skated on two different days. The scores are added together to determine the winner.

FREE SKATE WELL-BALANCED PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

A synchronized free skate contains numerous elements linked together by a variety of transitions. The free skate has a time limit of 4:30 for senior and 4:00 for junior.

REQUIRED ELEMENTS REQUIRED ELEMENTS

BLOCKAn element in which the skaters are arranged in parallel lines. The block must contain a minimum of three lines and a maximum of five. The skaters may be arranged in straight lines, diagonal lines, curved lines or a circular pattern. Teams should travel over the entire ice surface in the block. The lines of skaters should be straight and all the skaters evenly spaced. Features that make a block increase in difficulty are pivoting and changes of configuration.

CIRCLEThere are several variations of the circle, including one circle, two circles or a circle inside a circle. The shape should be round, and spacing between skaters should be even. There should not be any visible pulling or tugging between skaters. Features that increase the difficulty include traveling and changes of rotational direction.

INTERSECTIONAn intersection occurs when one half of the team intersects the other half of the team. Skaters may do turns and steps at the point of intersection to increase the difficulty.

LINEThere are several variations of the line, including one straight line, parallel lines or diagonal lines. Features that increase the difficulty include pivoting, changing configuration and retrogression.

MOVEMENT IN ISOLATIONA movement in isolation is an element during which some skaters are isolated from the rest of the team while performing free skating elements. These movements must show a relationship to the rest of the team and enhance the musical interpretation. The free skating ele-ments, such as jumps, spins, spirals or lifts, must be per-formed by a minimum of three skaters and a maximum of less than half of the team.

MOVES IN THE FIELDMoves in the field are a sequence of movements that must include free skating moves such as spirals, spread eagles, Ina Bauers and other flowing moves with strong edges, connected with linking steps. A moves in the field element must include at least three different free skating moves.

REQUIRED ELEMENTS REQUIRED ELEMENTS

PAIRS ELEMENTA free skating element or move is when one skater attaches to another by the use of one or both hands. Pairs elements in synchronized skating include pairs spins, pairs lifts and pairs pivots such as death spirals.

SPINSAll skaters must perform the same spin in unison. They may perform the element in any formation they choose.

NO HOLD STEP SEQUENCEA no hold step sequence is an element that looks simi-lar to a block step sequence except none of the skaters are connected to one another. The team must perform a series of turns and linking steps in four or five lines that travel over the entire ice surface on a diago-nal or straight line. The skaters must hold their spacing with-out connecting, and everyone must do the steps in unison.

BLOCK STEP SEQUENCEA block step sequence is a series of turns and linking steps performed by skaters while connected in a block shape. The difficulty of the element is determined by the difficulty of the turns completed within the sequence.

CIRCLE STEP SEQUENCEA circle step sequence is a series of turns and linking steps performed by skaters in a connected or unconnected circle. The difficulty of the element is determined by the difficulty of the turns completed within the sequence.

WHEELA wheel is an element during which all of the skaters rotate around a common point. It can be performed in many different formations such as those that include two to five spokes or parallel wheels. All spokes of the wheel should be straight, and the lean of the skaters should be in the same direction. Teams increase difficulty by including changes of rotational direction and traveling.

Each year U.S. Figure Skating nominates approximately 10–15 high-achieving synchronized teams to the U.S. Synchronized Team. Each qualifying synchronized team receives funding and an assignment to an international competition. Teams are selected based primarily on their performances in the junior or senior level at the most recent U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships. Less than five percent of teams entering the qualifying competitive system will be named to the national team.

There are four team levels: Team A, Team B, Team C and the Reserve Team. The primary difference between the levels is in funding. The higher the envelope to which a team is assigned, the more financial support it receives. Teams A, B and C receive funding. Reserve teams do not receive a travel or training grant, but if they choose to accept their assignment, they have the opportunity to participate in an ISU-sanctioned international competition.

U.S. Figure Skating’s goal for the U.S. Synchronized Skating Team is to win as many medals as possible at international competitions. Teams assigned to the envelopes are given many tools to do so, including:

• U.S. Figure Skating-funded monitoring sessions• Entry fees for international competitions• Team leaders and team physicians provided for interna-

tional competitions• Synchronized Team Envelope Funding (STEF) ranging

from $7,200–$14,600 per team• International travel grants ranging from $10,200–

$17,600 per team• Team USA clothing grants ranging from $50–$100 per

athlete• Airfare and housing expenses for all athletes qualifying

for the World Synchronized Skating Championships and Synchronized Skating Junior World Challenge Cup.

Held at locations nation-wide, these camps help skaters from the beginner through juvenile levels improve their individual and synchronized skating skills. The program’s staff includes U.S. Figure Skating Synchronized Skating head coaches and Team USA athletes who are members of the DREAM program.

LOCAL TEAMSThere are synchronized skating teams training and com-peting at various levels all over the United States. Unlike school sports, synchronized skating teams are typically formed from figure skating clubs that are member clubs of U.S. Figure Skating. U.S. Figure Skating member clubs are found at most rinks nationwide.

Synchronized skaters are talented figure skaters who enjoy participating in team sports. While synchronized skaters do not go on to professional teams, they enjoy the many benefits of participating in sport: challenge, hard work, achievement, friendships, fun, fitness and the opportunity to travel.

While there are not yet college scholarships available, synchronized skating is a popular college sport with more than 40 colleges offering club or varsity teams.

Beginner level synchronized skating teams typically prac-tice one hour per week whereas teams at the most com-petitive levels, junior and senior, train between 15-20 hours per week. Also, all team members must continue to maintain their skills by practicing individually in addition to team practices.

MEDIA OPPORTUNITIESMembers of the media are welcome to contact their local clubs to learn more about the sport and the many stories local clubs have to share.

Journalists can attend practices and competitions, arrange interviews with coaches and skaters, ask questions about the sport, take advantage of excellent visuals for TV broadcasts and still shots, or inquire about available B-roll and photographs. Clubs are helpful with assisting and educating the media about synchronized skating.

There are three ways to get in touch with local teams:1. Use the contact information provided on the back

cover of this guide.2. Visit www.findausfigureskatingclub.com. You’ll be

SPONSOR'S CORNER:SUPPORTING YOUR LOCAL TEAM

The majority of synchronized skating teams perform at exhibitions or ice shows at local rinks. Feel free to stop by and observe, ask questions and learn about the sport.

Local businesses make great sponsors for syn-chronized skating teams. Most teams are willing to wear sponsor logos, include advertisements in programs of local competitions and ice shows, and publicly thank sponsors in the com-munity and local newspapers.

Synchronized skating teams can also provide widespread publicity for sponsors through their national and international travel to competi-tions. The sport continues to grow, as does the number of athletes, parents, coaches and fans. Reaching out to this growing market will create noticeable benefits.
