Buckminster Fuller, inventor and futurist, put on his tombstone, “Call me Trimtab.” He introduced the metaphor of the “trimtab” to illustrate how small things in leadership can have a big impact. A large ocean liner has a huge rudder up to ten stories high to guide the ship. On the edge of the rudder is a miniature rudder called a trimtab. The trimtab is easily maneuverable and creates a low pressure that moves the huge rudder which steers the ship. A small effort produces a big impact. You can lead small and make a big impact. Steve Stroope, lead pastor of Lake Pointe Church, is a highly effective pastor. Under his leadership, Lake Pointe has grown from 57 members in 1980 to a current attendance of more than 11,000. Steve “has spent three decades mastering the art of leading small in a church
whose membership has multiplied from dozens to thousands.” Stroope’s newest book, Tribal Church – Lead Small, Impact BIG, explains how “great leaders begin by serving a core group of people who ripple outward for ever-extending social and spiritual impact. They go big by leading small.” Every church, regardless of size, is a collection of small tribes. Stroope writes, “Lake Pointe’s health and growth, to a large extent, is a result of passionately attending to what some would consider the little details and the smaller ‘tribes’ that make up our church.”

Ronney Nanney celebrates 30 years of employment at Mt. Lebanon Camp on September 1, 2012. Ronney serves as assistant manager, IT manager, and director of guest services for the camp. Ronney says the camp has experienced many changes over the last 30 years. “We have seen a vast improvement of facilities, including lodges and meeting spaces. We have also built several new buildings. Our
attendance has increased during retreat season as well as
summer camps.” But what he appreciates most about Mt. Lebanon is that “every summer I get to have the privilege to see hundreds of kids come to know Christ. It’s like the sign says as you enter camp ‘Mt. Lebanon…where people meet Jesus.’ It is so true!” Camp director Roger Jackson appreciates Ronney’s loyal service to Mt. Lebanon for so many years. “Ronney’s leadership is essential for the smooth operation of our camp,” he says. “Many of our guests compliment
Ronney’s friendly demeanor and his efforts to meet the needs of our guests.” Ronney and his wife, Roanna, live in a home on the camp grounds. Roanna
is a kindergarten teacher. Their son, J.T., and his wife, Marcy, are also employed at the camp. Ronney and Roanna’s son, Stephen, serves in the Navy and is married to Crystal, a teacher in Rockwall. Their daughter Sarah is a student at University of North Texas. Notes of appreciation for Ronney’s service to the camp can be mailed to the camp address or emailed to [email protected].

One of the best ways for a church to reach families in its community is to partner with a nearby public school. About a dozen of our DBA churches have active church-school partnerships. DBA collaborates with several ministry partners to provide the best resources to our churches for school partnerships. BIGHOPEis our newest collaboration. The Big Hope Network is a partnership with Kids
Hope USA and Big Brothers Big Sisters to provide a strong school partnership model for churches.
Churches participating in Big Hope have mentors from their churches who serve one hour per week with students at local elementary schools. Each church has a director, who is also a member of the church. Big Hope provides training so that the director is fully equipped to facilitate the church-school partnership. Big Brothers Big Sisters assists the church with school selection and matches the mentors with the children Fernando Pruneda directs The Crossing Baptist Church’s Kids Hope USA mentoring program at an elementary school in Mesquite. Fernando says that “Kids Hope USA has been a blessing for all those involved in this ministry.
It gives us the opportunity to show the love and compassion of our Lord Jesus Christ. In addition, it gives our congregation the chance to be involved in our community by reaching out to at-risk children ” Is God calling your church to offer BIG HOPE to a neighborhood school? Contact Jana Jackson, 214-319-1166.
In May of 2011, New Creation Bible Church of Fort Worth became a mission church sponsored by New Creation Bible Church, Dallas. The Fort Worth church’s lead pastor, Fred Kinney, says in a February 3, 2012, article in The Baptist Standard that his church “is a little weird. . . . We don’t do anything well. If you came to our service you’d freak out.” However, NCBC Fort Worth has baptized 26 in the past 11 months.
In this same article Pastor Kinney says, “I preach the same thing every Sunday—missions. Go and make disciples. And I’m not doing it. . . .They [the church members] are making disciples. They are crossing racial barriers. They are not looking at age.” Kinney further shared, “We
went back to going into people’s homes, hanging with them while they smoke cigarettes and drink
beer. We go into their homes, some of them with bugs crawling across your shoulders, and we sit there and spend time with them. That’s it. That’s what Jesus did. He spent time with people.” One of the new believers, a former gang member and a sixth grade dropout, is now the church’s leading evangelist. Fifteen of the 26 baptisms are the direct results of her discipleship. The church’s co-pastor, Ed Eliot, believes God is blessing their congregation. He believes that New Creation, Fort Worth, is experiencing this growth in part because the church is modeled after the early church found in the second chapter of Acts. As new believers invite their friends, the church grows.
