The Basics
LOGISTICS
Date: Monday, 9 July 2012
Time: 8am - 6pm
Venue: Hall
Students: 81 forms 1, 2, and 4, selected by application
OBJECTIVE
To provide students with the spirit, teamwork, and confidence to express themselves in a fun
English-only environment
BELIEFS
A lot can be learned from mixed abilities and mentorship. Hence each team has a mix of age, class
level, gender, and race.
Hitting various types of learners
Students practise English a lot in class, but they don't often use English to communicate to others.
Students' ability levels are much higher than their confidence levels, so this camp focuses on
building confidence.
One of students' most valuable assets are their friends, which is why teamwork is a core
component
Students will be much more participative if they help organise and prepare part of the camp,
whether it be through skits or postermaking
THEME

Long-Term Planning
DATE
The camp was initially scheduled for Saturday, 7 July. I was under the impression that after I presented my
proposal, the hall was reserved for the camp, which was not the case. Fortunately holding it on Monday
worked out well.
ETA INVITATIONS
Two weeks before the camp, I made invitation videos for eight ETAs whom I really wanted to be at the
camp, and made a generic video to send to several other ETAs. The video consisted of a handful of
students providing reasons as to why they wanted the ETAs to come to the camp.
The generic videos can be found here http://youtu.be/C-f51XmpvWs and here

MATERIALS
Camp materials came from the Kulai bookstore that has a partnership with SMK Senai (which had printable
stickers for nametags), eBooks in IOI Mall (which had small stickers to denote team points), the teacher
store in Kulai next to Tea Garden (which sold balloons in bulk and waterballoons), and a cloth shop across
the street from Cowboy in Kulai Town (for team apparel).

The food was entirely planned by Madam Latifah. The amount, quality, and variety of food were both
excellent.
STUDENT APPLICATIONS
With the help of three other teachers, we distributed ~120 applications. The purpose of the application
was not only to weed out students, but to garner information about them to ensure team diversity, to
organize student teaching partners and subjects, and to solicit students to help with camp preparation
(performing the opening dance, making posters, and performing skits).
(See Appendix F for the application)
Short-Term Planning
CONGRATULATORY LETTER
To notify students of their acceptance, each student received a letter congratulating them, listing
compulsory and optional meeting and camp prep times, listing whether they will be helping with skits,
posters, or the dance (or none), revealing what they will be teaching and their teaching partner, and listing
their information to see if I had mis-entered their information for the purpose of nametag and certificate
creation.
COMPULSORY BRIEFING
This 20-minute briefing took place on the Friday before the camp in the meeting room immediately after recess. The purpose was to hammer in the English-only rule, field last minute questions, and cover logistics (such as what to wear and what to bring).
OPTIONAL DANCE PRACTISES
On Thursday 10am-12pm and Friday 12pm-2pm (for afternoon session students), or Thursday 1.30pm-3pm
and Friday 1pm-3pm (for morning session students), students who opted to help perform the opening
dance practiced and rehearsed in the hall. Because I taught them the entire dance on Thursday, they were
pretty self-sufficient on Friday, allowing me to focus on the skits and posters.
OPTIONAL SKIT PRACTISE
From 12pm-2pm (afternoon session students) and 1pm-3pm (morning session students), students who
opted to help perform skits practiced and rehearsed in the hall.
OPTIONAL POSTERMAKING
From 12pm-2pm (afternoon session students) and 1pm-3pm (morning session students), students who
opted to help make posters created decorations for the hall, including a large train made of seven pieces of
mahjong paper. To assist students, I printed several examples of train-related signs and symbols for
students to draw.
The Camp
See Appendix A for the camp itinerary. Below are a few additional notes.
CULTURE
In order for the students to speak only speak English, students had to feel as if they were a part of
something completely new and drastically different. The following are components that contributed to this
culture.
Opening ceremony and performance (see section below)
Form 4 pep talk at the beginning of the day to establish them as role models
Skits following Vanity’s progress throughout the day
Q: “What time is it?” A: “English all the time!”
Team flags with points as denoted by stickers
Cheers
Enough English Teaching Assistants for there to always be 1-2 ETAs with every group at all times
Lunch role reversal, where students are being served by teachers
OPENING CEREMONY & PERFORMANCE
The opening was intentionally the most dramatic and prepared section of the camp so as to hammer in the
message of “This is not English class, but rather an English-only fun-filled camp that many teachers and
students worked hard to organize.”
Here is what happened in detail. Students received a pep talk outside. As they filed in, upbeat music was
pumping while eight ETAs formed a clapping tunnel while chanting “chugga chugga choo choo, Senai
Express is coming through.” At the end of the tunnel, four other ETAs showered the students with
balloons. Immediately once all the students were seated, there was six minutes of five dances and two
acts. Afterwards, the skit began, which integrated the Principal’s speech and ETA introductions.
SKITS
Skits were a core component of the camp. The storyline advanced after each activity, and activities were
mostly explained via skits as well. I wanted the storyline and theme to be ingrained in the camp so that
there would be a camp culture both during and after the camp.
Unfortunately, the student skits were difficult to hear and follow, primarily due to my failure to practise
enough with the students.
Skit premise: Vanity has always wanted to be the conductor of her very own train. One day, the President
of the Intergalactic Federation of Trains decides to let her try conducting the SMK Senai Express for just
one journey. Along the way, Vanity encounters several obstacles due to a lack of spirit, teamwork, and
confidence. Finally, she realizes that being a train conductor isn’t a one-woman job. Rather, it requires
spirit, teamwork, and confidence.
DODGEBALL
Dodgeball was not carried through both in order to stay on schedule and because the venue may have
been inappropriate for chucking volleyballs. Instead, Blindfolded Paper Ball Throwing took place then and
continued for a few minutes once those who chose to pray returned.
STUDENT TEACHING
This was the main two hour culminating event that challenged students’ spirit, teamwork, confidence, and
determination to only speak English.

THE STAR: “ENGLISH IS FINALLY FUN”
Monday July 16, 2012
By MOHD FARHAAN SHAH | [email protected]
Photos by ABDUL RAHMAN EMBONG
KULAIJAYA: Learning English is never fun said Mohd Khairi Azreen, a Form Four pupil of SMK Senai.
With this thought firmly planted in his mind, the teenager had to force himself to learn the subject for the sake of learning.
But his perception changed after English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Mark Pan arrived from California, USA, in February.
“Cikgu Mark brought new meaning to the subject and made learning English fun for us,” Mohd Khairi told StarMetro.
He was among the 85 students from the school who took part in an English Language Camp organised by 16 ETAs from Johor and Pahang.
The ETAs arrived in the two states in February under the United States Fullbright Programme.
The teachers were posted at selected schools.
Mohd Khairi said since Mark’s arrival, he had introduced games and dances to make learning English fun, creating more interest among the pupils.
Another participant Chai Chuan Liang, 14, had concurred with Mohd Khairi and said the camp helped the pupils to become more confident to converse in English.
Pan said the pupils are more confident now compared to the first time he set foot in the school six months ago.
“Initially, they were shy and reluctant to speak English, but now they are more receptive to the language and do not hesitate to converse,” he said.
He added that by participating in the camp, students had no choice but to converse in English as the ETAs do not speak in Bahasa Malaysia.
Pan, who holds a degree in Urban Education, said he was impressed with the determination shown by his pupils.
The ETA programme is a result of an understanding between the Education Ministry and the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange under the Fullbright Programme English Teaching Assistants.
The teaching assistants are deployed to classrooms all over the world to provide assistance to teachers that teach the English language to non-native English speakers.

NEW STRAITS TIMES: “MASTERING ENGLISH BY SPEAKING NOTHING ELSE”
13 July 2012
By JASSMINE SHADIQE | [email protected]
Mark Peter Pan, who was posted to SMK Senai in February this year, was the brainchild behind the camp, which was co-organised with SMK Senai's English Language Department.
Pan said the camp was called the SMK Senai Express, a Day-Long English Camp. It built up the students' teamwork and confidence levels. Pan, who roped in his fellow ETAs posted in Johor and Pahang, designed the camp to include a segment where students had to teach their peers.
To ensure the students enrolled willingly, the camp was open to those who sent in their applications via their class teachers. The 82 participants consisted of students from Form 1, 2 and 4. Students from Form 3 and 5 were refrained from any extra curricular activity to allow them ample time to concentrate on their upcoming national examinations.
The school's English teacher, Latifah Arshad, also gave a helping hand by ensuring everything was in order.
The camp held at the school's hall started at 8am with the registration of students. They were later divided into groups and identified by colourful ribbons and name tags.
Because all the ETAs could not speak Bahasa Malaysia, the students had no other choice but to speak English at the camp. The students were told that those caught using any other language besides English will be issued with a green card as a warning, yellow card as a penalty, and a red card for time-out. Those who received the cards would also see points deducted for their group activities.
Pan said the camp was different from other language workshops as it incorporated a strong English-only emphasis. For instance, the students had to explain their storyline and perform their skits in English. Even when cheering, the students had to use carefully worded sentences in English.
The most dramatic part of the camp was when it was time for the students to perform. It was while performing that many of them instantly warmed up to each other, while others were at ease enough to break into laughter.
Later in the evening saw students in stitches over the Students Teaching Lessons segment. The students were required to teach their fellow students a new skill, or market a product. Some students taught their peers the hip hop dance, while others gave lengthy explanations in English about everyday items. One group was overheard discussing about hair spray!
"Everyone seemed to enjoy the camp, and the best part was they spoke in English all the time," said Latifah. "The camp was a total success," she added. The teacher, who has 28 years of teaching experience, said the ETAs were popular among the students.
"The 16 ETAs who helped facilitate the camp are foreigners who are young and creative.” “Their positive attitude seem to attract the students to them.” "As teachers, we are always concentrating on finishing the syllabus and preparing the students to excel in the examinations.” "The ETAs, on the other hand, mingle with the students and make sure they speak in English, boosting their confidence," said Latifah. She said the ETAs do not speak Malay. "Thus, the only mode of communication is English. "Initially, when the ETAs said 'hi', their students would run away shyly. Now, their students are confident enough to hold a full discussion with the ETAs," added Latifah.
For Pan, who is in his mid-20s, the camp met its objective, as the motley group of students from different classes and with different levels of English-language capabilities, came together to perform to the best of their ability. He said implementing visual, verbal, kinesthetic, musical, and logical thinking learning methods, among others, have enabled the students to understand English better.
Fourth Former R. Vishnu Vathanaan, 16, said he applied to participate in the camp because he wanted to improve his English language proficiency. "I enjoyed it best when our group had to make noises and act out the animals that we described. Our
Page 9 of 26
friends had to say the answers in English. "I realise that when I speak English more frequently, the words come easier," said Vishnu, whose ambition is to be a "very capable computer engineer".
Azlin Shafienaz Azman, 14, said being in a group where her seniors were members, was initially scary. "But as the camp went on and we warmed up to each other, I put aside my fears and performed together as a group when all of us spoke in English," she said.
Meanwhile, Yap May Jin, 16, who aspires to be a master of ceremonies when she grows up, said she must master the language and speak fluently to achieve her dreams. "I am more confident and will keep on speaking in English until I speak it fluently. Next year is a crucial year for me, as I will be sitting for my SPM. "Thus this year, I will enrol in all camps and workshops, so I can further equip myself," she said.
The ETA programme came about as a result of an understanding between the Education Ministry and the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange under the latter's Fulbright Programme English Teaching Assistants. The ETAs are deployed to classrooms all over the world to provide assistance to teachers of English to non-native English-speakers. ETAs help teach English language while serving as a cultural ambassador for the United States. ETAs come from universities throughout the US and teach a wide variety of subjects. Since the beginning of the year, more than 50 ETAs have been assigned to primary and secondary schools in Terengganu, Pahang and Johor.

I would like to give kudos to all the ETAs, sometimes I forget your name, every one of you assists
me a lot in this camp. You all give the camp added a lot of laughter. I appreciate it very very very
much.
“It was the extraordinary day for me.”
What Went Well
OPENING CEREMONY & PERFORMANCES
The pizazz and the “wow” factor was certainly present during the opening. Students got the feeling that
this camp was not just a larger English class taking place in the hall, but rather a camp taking place in a
bubble far removed from Malaysia. For the ETA next year: spend a lot of time to make a good show right
off the bat.
NAMETAGS
Something that seems so simple made a huge different in the camp’s organisation. Each student’s nametag
listed all of the stations that that student had to attend, both as a team and individually. This way,
whenever a student didn’t know where to go, he/she just had to look as his/her nametag, figure out which
activity we were doing, and go to the corresponding station number.
(See Appendix B for samples)
ETA ASSIGNED ROLES
It was helpful to have certain roles pre-assigned to ETAs, as listed in the “Master Doc” Excel spreadsheet.
Additionally, keeping me away from any assigned roles was paramount. My role during the camp was
mostly to give a heads up to the facilitator of the next activity, or to keep time.
One ETA was initially assigned to be my “stunt double,” to follow me and assist me whenever I needed
him. This was helpful in the very beginning when it was more hectic, though it became unnecessary once
things started rolling.
VENUE
The Hall was a perfect venue that was able to accommodate everything from the 11 different Student
Teaching stations to the lunchtime restaurant simulation. Having the hall the entire day was crucial for
setup and transitional fluidity of activities.
BLIND-FOLDED PAPER BALL THROWING
While this activity was happening, I had no idea that it was as popular as the evaluations made it out to be
(it was the most well-liked activity), since it only involved two people from each team at a time. It was
helpful that many of the 81 students were praying at the time, so perhaps this activity can continue to be
held during prayer time in the future.
Improvements
REVIEWING THE ITINERARY WITH TEACHERS
The most stressful challenge I faced was having to make last minute adjustments due to events foreseeable by other teachers but not me. These include a tree-planting ceremony, giving gifts to the ETAs, photo ops due to a multitude of reporters, tea times on my itinerary being different from what was scheduled, and the prayer time on my itinerary not being the correct prayer time. These could all have easily been avoided if everyone involved had reviewed itinerary I had handed out two and three weeks prior to the camp.
APPLICATIONS
Several people who helped me distribute applications seemed to interpret the application as a sign up form instead of an application. Hence there was some confusion with why 125 applications were printed. Next time, I would ensure that those who help distribute applications know that it is not a sign up form.
Publicity: I had hoped that students of all forms would apply for the camp. However, I later found
out that those who had helped distribute the application focused on the higher performing classes.
Create more blank space so that students write fuller responses
ETA LETTERS
Sending letters from our PPD to the rest of Pahang and Terengganu took much longer than I had anticipated. As a result, we lost 1-3 ETAs who would have come. I would suggest requesting letters and submitting a complete list of ETAs, schools, and districts at least 10 days beforehand.
MEDIA INTERVIEWS
Reporters did not seem sensitive to the fact that I was trying to run a camp, which I would prefer to do over providing the reporters with five to ten minute interviews during camp activities.
ACTIVITIES
Student Teaching: This main activity, making up two hours of the day, was the most loved and
hated activity—many students loved it, while many students hated it.
Jabberwocky: Students did not seem to get silly or excited about this activity.
Kudos: My hope was for students to be brave enough to individually stand up and thank other
students or their teams for helping them in some regard. Instead, everyone who spoke just
uniformly thanked the principal, teachers, and ETAs.
Cheers: It would have strengthened the camp culture if the cheers were repeated in the skits, later
activities, or even just during down time. Students should walk away knowing the cheers, and
perhaps even start a few cheers the next day at school with their friends.
Student Teaching: While this was an overall success, many students did not enjoy this activity. I
think this was because 1) they did not know how to implement a basic lesson plan, and 2) they
were shy. If this were to be implemented again, I would provide a few 10-minute examples, instead
of the 1 minute skit examples that we provided. Partner-teaching was mostly positive—I’m not sure
how to improve the working relationships, as there will always be conflicts when people work
together.
Areas to Explore
EXTENDED CAMP
Many students suggested a longer one to two day camp. I had originally avoided this due to it being a logistical nightmare, but the 10 hours did seem quite short. There are also many activities that could only have occurred at an overnight camp.
FORM 4-LED CAMP
Because I cannot invite all of the ETAs over to assist at a SMK Senai camp again, and to provide Form 4 students with some more leadership opportunities
INTRAPERSONAL LEARNING
While I strived to hit all types of learners equally, intrapersonal learning was left out. This may have been good to incorporate in the beginning during the pep talk.
HANDS-ON BUILDING ACTIVITIES
There were many hands-on activities, but flag-making in the beginning was the only activity that involved building and creating.

Premise Vanity has always wanted to be the conductor of her very own train. One day, the President of the Intergalactic Federation of Trains decides to let her try conducting the SMK Senai Express for just one journey. Along the way, Vanity encounters several obstacles due to a lack of spirit, teamwork, and confidence. Finally, she realizes that being a train conductor isn’t a one-woman job. Rather, it requires spirit, teamwork, and confidence.
Props Vanity’s red/blue scarf

Captain’s cowboy hat (from Charlie)

Ally’s raincoat (from Mark)
Guidebook’s English books (from Mark)
Characters Vanity: the vain aspiring train captain - MJ Yap (beginning to end of Part 1), Liliy (Part 2 to end)
Ex-Captain: old and wise. Always stroking imaginary beard. - Shalini
Vanity’s Pet Rock: always bored, sassy, wise, slightly detached from Vanity - Sarennia (beginning to end of Part 1), Nirmala (Part 2 to end)
Professor - Shatish
Class Monitor: always worried - Aqilah (beginning to right before part 1), Wan Ni (Part 1 to end of Part 1), Li Ling (part 2 to end)
Guidebook: a very shy, stuttering, and smart book forced to join Vanity - Pretina
Ally: Super energetic. The most loyal friend and ally - Lavaniya (beginning to end of Part 1), Nur Liyana (Part 2 to end)
Skit #1: Opening Skit & Find Your Team | Directed by Janice Characters (#): Vanity, Captain, Vanity’s Pet Rock, Class Monitor, Ally, Professor, Guidebook
Vanity (MJ Yap): (sleep-talking) That’s what makes me beautiful… that’s what makes me beautiful… (wakes up, speaks excitedly to the audience) WOW THAT WAS AMAZING! WASN’T THAT AMAZING?!? I’m going to be the smartest, the most popular, and the most beautiful train captain EVER!
Ex-Captain (Shalini): (Enter Ex-Captain and knock on Vanity’s door) Vanity, wake up! And make me breakfast. I would like some nasi lemak. And for lunch and dinner… also nasi lemak! (Walk off stage)
Vanity (MJ Yap): Yes, sir… Pet Rock (Sarennia): You know, you should show more SPIRIT and have more ENERGY if you want the captain to like you. Vanity (MJ Yap): AHH YOU CAN TALK!! Pet Rock (Sarennia): Why, of course I can talk… Vanity (MJ Yap): But… but you’re my pet rock! Pet Rock (Sarennia): Don’t you watch TV and read picture books? All pet rocks talk. Vanity (MJ Yap): I don’t like you’re attitude. Sit still and be a normal, silent rock. I have to go to English class for people who want to be train
captains! The world-famous school principal is giving a speech welcoming us on board! All: (walk off stage) [MADAM BALWINDER DELIVERS HER SPEECH]
(Walk back on stage with chairs and Class Monitor, Professor, and Ally) Vanity (MJ Yap): Wow, thank you Madam Balwinder! I can’t wait to start class!
(Professor is in front waiting for students to be quiet. Vanity, Ally, and Vanity’s Pet Rock are chatting loudly.) Class Monitor: If you can hear me, clap once. If you can hear me, clap twice. If you can hear me, clap 10 times! Good job! Let’s practice that again with everyone. Everyone chat! Blah blah blah… If you can hear me, clap once. If you can hear
me, clap twice. If you can hear me, clap 10 times! Vanity (MJ Yap): It looks like we have some new people at our school! Can you all introduce yourselves and tell us what is on your name tag? ETAs: (Introduce selves) Professor: (boringly) Okay class thanks for the introductions. Now, please turn to page ten million, five hundred thousand, thirty two and a
half. Today we are going to learn about the letter “b.” B is for boy. Or for band. Or for… boy band. Vanity (MJ Yap): Hey! This isn’t supposed to be a boring lecture! I want to drive some trains! Ally: What we are trying to say, professor, is that maybe our lessons could be more… SPIRITED! Professor: You’re right. I think it’s time we began our journey! So, what do we need to bring on the train! Pet Rock (Sarennia): Spirit. Class Monitor: (link arms with friend) Teamwork? Ally: (hands on hips) “Confidence!” Professor: …uhhhh… right… And bring your trusty GUIDEBOOK! Guidebook: (enter the stage speaking gibberish) Class Monitor: Hey! What time is it? Guidebook: Oops! English all the time! Class Monitor: Let’s try that all together. So everyone do this: (whispers) “Malay Malay Malay…” WHAT TIME IS IT??? (wait for audience to
respond) Good! Guidebook: Anyways, I was trying to say that I’m a guide BUDDY, not a book, since I can talk, you see. I’m a person too… Vanity (MJ Yap): (interrupts Guidebook) Yeah whatever. Let’s see, page one. Rules. Rule number one: English all the time. Hmm. But what if I
don’t… what if I don’t… ummm… All: WHAT TIME IS IT! Vanity (MJ Yap): English all the time! But I don’t know the word!
Professor: Use body language. For example, (do body movements saying “Vanity, you are very smart.”) Vanity (MJ Yap): Uhh.. I have a head? Guidebook: Vanity has fingers? Ally: Vanity’s hair is SOOO beautiful! Pet Rock (Sarennia): Vanity’s brain is as smart as a rock. Which is much less smart than PET rocks. Class Monitor: If my calculations are correct, I think… umm.. what the professor is saying is that Vanity is very smart. All: Ooooohh! Class Monitor: So if you don’t know how to say something in English, act it out with your body and ask friends for help! Looks like everyone is
going to need some friends to help each other on this journey. Ally: Let’s play a game to find our team and begin our journey! All: (Explain the blind animal game) All: (Exit stage)
Part 1: Spirit | Directed by Holly
Get to Know Your Team (ETAs only)
Characters: Janice, Jake, Julie Janice: (Enters screaming head off running in circles) Ahhhh!!! Jake & Julie: (Enter running) What’s wrong?! What’s wrong?! Janice: The captain! She… she… Jake: She WHAT? Janice: She got a paper cut, and is now in the hospital! Julie: A… papercut? Like she dangerously grabbed a piece of A4 paper and got a little cut? Janice: YES! What are we going to do?!? Jake: We better find a new captain… let’s go! All: (Walk in a circle searching. Then awkwardly meet each other, i.e. “where are you from? Johor? Oh. Cool. [silence]) Jake & Julie: (freeze mid awkwardness) Janice: Freeze! Wasn’t that just weird and awkward??? Let’s try not to make that same mistake. I think it’s time we got to know our
groups! Each group will have 10 minutes to get to know EEEVERYTHING about each other. There are example questions that each group will receive if you don’t know what to ask. Who here likes exams and quizzes? Good! Because in 10 minutes, we’ll have a quiz to test how much you know about your group!
All: (Exit stage)
Team Identity Formation (ETAs only)
Janice: Vani-what? Jake: Vani-tie? Julie: Vanity, I think. I can’t believe SHE was chosen to be the captain! Janice: What does the name “Vanity” even mean? Who is she? I’ve never heard of her. Jake: Vanity means someone who really really likes himself or herself. Julie: (Scoffs) I bet she’s about the only person. Besides, what does SHE know about SPIRIT? Janice: Let’s give her a chance. Let’s get to know her a bit more first. Jake: Alright. So for all of us to share who we are and what we are all about to other groups, each group will 1) make a team name, 2)
take a mahjong paper and make a flag, and 3) use the cloth to make a piece of team clothing (such as headbands or armbands or necklaces). Let’s do it!
Cheer Stations
Characters: Vanity, Ally, Class Monitor, Guidebook, Pet Rock, Spirit Meter (Holly) All Except Spirit Meter: (Enter stage) Vanity (MJ Yap): Well done all of you! WELCOME ON THE SMK SENAI EXPRESS, WHERE WE WILL BE GOING ON ALL KINDS OF ADVENTURES
TOGETHER... Everybody, put your seat belts on, the train is ready to leave its station on our exciting journey! Ally: WOW OH WOW! Look, we’re moving! Vanity, Ally, Class Monitor, and Guidebook:
(form a train with Vanity first) “chuga chuga chuga chuga CHOO CHOO, Senai Express is coming through!” x2 (suddenly screech to a stop)
Class Monitor: What happened?! Why did we stop? Vanity’s Pet Rock: Probably because of Newton’s Laws of Physics. Ally: Look at the Spirit Meter! It’s so LOW! Where did all the spirit go!?!?!! Spirit Meter (Holly): (Form a meter with arms. Look sickly. Moan.) Guidebook: Without SPIRIT FUEL, the SMK Senai Express will not work. Our train will not move until the SPIRIT METER is back to the
maximum. Class Monitor: HOW CAN WE FIX IT? Guidebook: We have to show spirit to raise the spirit fuel meter back to the maximum for the train to move! Ally: So let’s show our spirit! There are 5 stations in and outside of the hall. Your nametag will tell you the order of stations that you
must go in. So hurry, we don’t have much time! Go to your first station! All: (Exit stage)

It’s the Marshmallow Masters Marsh. 1 (Katie): That’s right! And you cannot cross the river without FOUR of our magical marshmallows to step on! Class Monitor: FOUR marshmallows?!? Marsh. 2 (Tina): Unless, you change our minds by showing a lot of SPIRIT, of course. Each time you show us your spirit, we’ll give you one
marshmallow. Marsh. 3 (Adeel): (While stuffing marshmallows in mouth) NO! We’ll never change our minds! The marshmallows are all mine! Ally: We’ll see about that! Okay, each group needs to line up like this. Then, we’ll call the Marshmallow Master over like this:
“Marshmallow Master, Marshmallow Master, we have something for you!” Can we try that together? (Do it with everyone) If you are loud enough, a Marshmallow Master will come over, and you can do your cheer! (Do a cheer like “We’ve got spirit, yes we do, we’ve got spirit, how about you!”)
Marsh. 1 (Katie): Ah, that was excellent. It makes me want to cry. Congratulations, you deserve this fluffy marshmallow. Ally: Each time you get a marshmallow, your team can go forward one space! Let’s line up and start! All: (Exit stage)

Suddenly stop!) Guidebook: It looks like we need to decide which way to turn. Which way should we go? Pet Rock: Do I look like a GPS? Guidebook: Umm...well I don’t know about you guys, but I’m gonna go this way. (Walk towards a certain direction) Monitor: No no no, you can go that way, but I think the CORRECT way is over there (point towards opposite direction) Ally: Guys! No! Don’t you understand? Ally: (Enter on stage) Did somebody say DANCE? Guidebook: The answer to your question would be yes. Correct. Affirmative. Indeed. Bernie: Yes! Dance! Ally: I love dancing! Show us what you’ve got! Bernie: (Teach the Bernie and do it together with the audience) Vanity’s Pet Rock: (Enter on stage) You look like a dead, inanimate object. A rock could dance better than that. Class Monitor: STOP! Ex-Captain (Shalini): However, she’s growing a lot. First she increased her spirit by a lot. And now, she has started to improve her teamwork. Pet Rock: But I don’t like her. Vanity is sometimes just so... VAIN. Maybe that’s why her name is Vanity. Because she’s so VAIN. Ex-Captain (Shalini): Let’s give her another chance to see if she keeps improving. At least she is speaking English all the time! Pet Rock: Ok. I have set up four different stations, each testing Vanity’s teamwork abilities and to see if she continues to speak English all
the time. Groups, you can see which station you should go to first by looking at your nametag where it says “Mini-Activity.” Ex-Captain (Shalini): Let’s help Vanity out! All: (Exit stage)
