to the Maidu Museum and Historic Site

next to Maidu Regional Park. Gaze across

indigenous plants and watch the play of

sunlight on the Strap Ravine portion of

Dry Creek as you imagine what life was

like here thousands of years ago.

The museum houses artifacts and cul-

Each year, 15,000 area students trod

ancient paths on the 30-acre historic site,

which is on the National Register of His-

together for community gatherings. This is

    a very important site.

Petroglyphs, or carved rock art, located

onsite date around 5,000 years old. The sitealso features hundreds of bedrock mortars

used for acorn grinding, as well as deposits

of ochre pigments used for painting.

Archery classes are among the museums

popular summer programs. In a partner-

ship between Maya Archers of Roseville

and the Maidu Museum, children and

adults alike can experience the satisfactory

thud of their arrow burrowing into a target.

Robert Moore is youth program coordi-

nator for Maya Archers and an activity

instructor for Roseville Parks and Recre-

    ation.

Archery is a personal sport, said

Moore, who has practiced archery for 30

years. You influence your success. You

dictate in your process where the arrow

goes in what you do. Some people like that

    challenge.

Frantz said bow and arrow was an

indigenous tool or weapon that Maidu

began using about 2,000 years ago. She

said the recent movie Hunger Games

    probably contributed to increased enroll-

ment in the archery classes this year, but

the classes have always been popular.

The museum, built two years ago, has

hosted summer camps onsite since its ori-

gins in 2001, when its collection was

housed in the modular structure known as

the Maidu Interpretive Center. Camp top-

ics include native tools and musical instru-ments, as well as outdoor appreciation.

We want (campers) to experience the

sun, the water, learn about their animals,

    12 ROSEVILLE & ROCKLIN LIVING July, 2012

    BY MARGARET SNIDER

    ROSEVILLE & ROCKLIN LIVING

    Robert Woods Johnson Foundation

has named Placer County as the

2012 fourth healthiest out of 56 Cal-

ifornia counties. Sierra and Alpine coun-

    ties were not rated.

The ranking is composed of two main

parts: health outcomes and health factors.

Outcomes relate to low birth weight, how

healthy or unhealthy the population is,

    and premature deaths.

The culture, in a sense, in a particularcounty influences health factors, and then

ultimately our health factors will influence

health outcomes, said Dr. Jeanne Conry,

    assistant physician-in-chief for Kaiser Per-

    manente Northern California. So looking

at the health factors is probably the most

    important part of the report.

While Placer County is placed fourth in

health outcomes, it actually was second in

health factors, which contains four cate-

gories: behaviors, clinical care, social and

    economic factors, and physical environ-

    ment.

In terms of Kaiser Permanente, Conry

said, we provide access to care, we pro-

vide attention to the critical needs, and

    then truly ultimately, philosophically, we

    have a focus on wellness.

Conry emphasized that it is not only

access to care that is important, but also

the outreach that comes along with it, thepreventive health care measures.

Kaisers walk to thrive program gets

people out and moving and their live well

be well program encourages healthy eat-

    ing, physical activity, emotional wellness

    and prevention.

Patrick Brady, CEO of Sutter Roseville

Medical Center, said that every third year

the four major health care systems in

    region Mercy Healthcare, Kaiser

manente, Sutter Health and UC D

    Health System get together and

    very comprehensive community n

    assessment.

    Doing it collaboratively, you also

consensus on what the most impor

health needs are to address, Brady sa

As a result, and in collaboration

    community-based organizations, a sa

    net is created which identifies

addresses these needs.Brady said that an important com

nent of the health status of Placer Co

relates to how the local health syst

provide a whole range of health and w

problems, Brady said. I think Sutter

Health is clearly a leader in offering servic-

    es of that nature.

One program that Sutter has had in

place for about three years, Brady said,

helps to identify people who fall outside of

the health care system, dont have primary

health care providers and are part of a

    high risk population.

We link them up with medical services

and we ensure that they get mental health

    therapy, substance abuse treatment, and

    then case management, Brady said.

Brady points out that Sutters urgent

care center on campus can help in reliev-

ing some of the emergency room over-

    load.

We also have something called Sutter

Express Care out on Foothill Boulevard, in

the Rite Aid Center, where people can

come in and get very quick and easy

access to basic health care services, Brady

said. We need more of those kinds of

things that allow people to get what theyneed in the way of health care, but its not

as expensive and also not as detailed as a

    hospital emergency room visit.

The purpose of the RWJF County Health

Rankings and Roadmaps program is to

    help communities create solutions that

make it easier for people to be healthy,

    said Karen Odegaard, community engage-

    ment specialist with the RWJF.

The bottom line is that all of the m

ures have some strengths and some l

tations, Odegaard said. Its a good s

ing point to consider these different he

factors, along with access to care and

    other things.

The RWJF came into existence in

    as the John

    New Bruns

    Foundation, s

    ed by a son of

    Robert Wo

    Johnson

    founded, with

    brothers, the Jo

    son & John

    Company of

    Brunswick,

    Jersey in the late 1800s.

I think the more we emphasize hea

choices, the more we create the cultu

healthy choices, and thats what th

about, Conry said. I think weve gotackle obesity and the only way to do

    is to change our culture.

In 2010, Placer County ranked sixt

the study, and in 2011, it ranked t

    among California counties.

Id like to see us in first place, B

said. We have a very active, vibrant po

    BY MARGARET SNIDER

    ROSEVILLE & ROCKLIN LIVING

    W

hen you drive up to your house,

what does the first glance tell

you? It can be like unexpectedlyseeing yourself in a mirror, for a moment

unaware that the reflection is you.

Just for a second, you see your house as

a stranger would. Does it appeal to you?

Would you say to yourself, I like that

    house?

The front landscape is the face of the

house, said Victor Duran, owner of Duran

Landscape of Loomis. Its the homeown-

    ers face.

There are a lot of reasons for paying

    attention to your homes visage.

As you look at the house you want to

see that its welcoming, Duran said. Not

only that, but its going to beautify the

neighborhood at the same time, with all

the different things that affect the land-

scape, from the workmans aspect to the

    resale value.

Happily, if the front of your house is not

quite what you want, a facelift is possible.

What is important is to picture what you

want to achieve, and find out how that can

be done in a way that is coordinated with

your home, your neighborhood, and that

    satisfies your creative yearnings.

Some people, they go very basic,

    Duran said. Basic is boring.

Whether you do it yourself or call in a

designer or landscaper depends on your

time, your skills, and your available

resources. How much room do you have, how much time for maintenance?

    Good professional help can sometimes

save you money by knowing exactly what

theyre doing and how to go about it. And

they have done it many times before.

    A walk-by appearance should be

appealing to the eye. It should have tex-

ture, said Angie Figueroa of Rocklin. She

and her husband, Ronald, own Figs Land-

    scaping in Loomis.

Different plant types can add to texture,

    and so can color.

Color always pops for someone driving

by, said Kurt Voigt of Lincoln. He had his

own landscaping company for 15 years,

and worked for a large landscaping firm

for five years. Now he concentrates on

    design and consultation.

Color, I would say, on the list of 1 to 10

would be the No. 1 item, Voigt said. And

when I say color, that could mean annual

    color, like marigolds, daffodils, impatiens,

begonias or perennial color like core-

opsis, black eyed Susans.Voigt pointed out that there are also a

variety of shades of green, and different

color combinations: cool colors such as

pinks, violets and blues, and warm colors

such as yellows, reds and oranges.

In addition, there are more than plants

to bear in mind, for example, driveways,

    walkways and lighting.

When we first started out it was,

    put some paving material, Figu

said. Now you have all sorts of beau

designs and concrete, you have all kind

pavers. Our choices are quadrupled n

Planning can include how the hou

painted or how your doorway fits into

scheme of things. Rock work, trees

fountains can add to the mix. Fen

gates and archways may be considere

well as pots, planters and window bo

    chairs, swings, hammocks, lawns

    ground covers.

Lighting is a complete subject by its

Landscape lighting in the last 10 y

has just taken off, Voigt said. Therecompanies out there, all they do is la

scape lighting. Even as a landscaper Im

impressed with where theyve gone w

    lighting.

    Whatever you decide, focusing y

attention on the front of your home

be an engaging, creative outlet and y

    satisfying results.

    COU

To achieve the desired curb appeal, the front of a home should coordinate

with the neighborhood and should be welcoming.

Make a good first impression step up your curb appe

    down the street thats empty.

Its a matter of merchandising. A home

that is clean, uncluttered and smartly fur-

    nished is appealing to buyers.

Staging gives buyers an idea of what the

home will look like when they move in,

said Ryan Dressel, owner of Stage Right

    Design, Inc.

Only 10 percent of potential homebuy-

ers can walk into an empty home andvisualize the potential, he said. The other

90 percent cant picture their furnishings

in a home. Theyre not sure how their sofa

will look in the living room or if their table

will fit in the dining room.

If there is no furniture in a room, poten-

tial homebuyers may not know what

room it is. Dressel shows them by staging

    a home.

When people visit a home, theyre

    making an emotional connection, Dres-

sel said. Its hard to fall in love with floors

and walls. When they see a staged home,

theyll say, OMG, we could live like this.

They look at the potential and put a full

    offer on the home.

    Dressel stages vacant homes

    investors who have purchased fore

sures and are fixing them up for resale

    also stages unoccupied homes for

    estate agents and offers consultation

people who are selling their homes.

    Claudine Odell of Roseville work

    Realtors who offer complimentary sta

for their clients, many of whom live at

    Webbs Sun City Roseville.

I talk to people who are selling t

home and make suggestions, she sa

give them ideas such as moving the fu

ture around and putting things in

garage so the home is not cluttered.

We all collect things, but sellers nee

get pictures and doctors appointmcards off the refrigerator and tidy up t

homes, she said. She suggests people

things to give to their children, to Go

will or to take with them.

They need to make their home fe

large as possible, even making it look

a model home by giving it that eye-ca

    appeal, she said.

    HOME STAGING SUGGESTIONS

Spend money to make money sellingyour home. Hire a professional home stager for aconsultation. The fee is generallybetween $150 and $350. Get a comprehensive, written plan.

Home stagers are not building inspec-tors. Theyre making suggestions thatare simply cosmetic. Trim hedges and other landscaping. De-clutter. Determine what youll giveto family members, what goes to chari-table organizations and what youll taketo your new home. Freshen the home with paint, butselect neutral colors. Clean the carpet. Dont replace.Instead, negotiate new carpeting in thesale price of the home. Rearrange furniture.

I bring in greenery and flowers and add bright,

cheerful colors such as red or rusty orange for a

happier feel. You got to give it that pop, she said.

If a home is empty, she suggests fresh paint,

cleaning the carpet and trimming the landscape.

She creates vignettes to make the house feel like

home. Thats better than walking into empty

rooms, she said.Dressel sees a big demand for staging homes.

Thats because the results are worth it.

Of the 123 homes he staged in the tri-county area

in 2011, 96 percent sold within the first 60 days they

were on the market. Dressel started in 2007 and

gradually built his business from staging four

homes a week to doing two a day.

Vacant homes give me creative freedom, he

said. I appeal to the masses, not to a sellers or own-

ers individual tastes. I always under promise and

    over deliver.

With properly placed furniture, Dressel controls

how people move through a home and how they

feel. Staging to sell is different than staging to live,

    Dressel said.

He also stages homes for photographs since 85

percent of potential buyers visit the Internet to pre-

    view homes for sale.

They look at the photos and see how gorgeous a

home is no matter what price, Dressel said. I

showcase a home in the best light.

Staging a home is similar to a job interview, Dres-

sel said. You only get one shot at making a good

    first impression.

Without any furnishings in a home, buyers may

notice flaws, like chipped paint or small cracks in

the walls. They start noticing the negative aspects,

    Dressel said.

While some Realtors do their own staging by

adding a few accessories in kitchens and bathrooms

or a table in the dining room, thats not enough,

Dressel said. Theyre not getting that wow factor. You dont want to leave the buyer with any unan-

    swered questions.

Hes noticed that people spend more time looking

at a staged home and said that 96 to 98 percent of

staged homes sell within the first 60 days.

Those sales are profitable. Buyers will spend

more money if the house is move-in ready, Dressel

    said.

If someone wants to use red, for

instance, because thats a current trend,

Aaberg will recommend something else if

red isnt their color. I might suggest using

a little red by painting a door that color

because theyre not a red person.

People shouldnt follow the latest trends,

she said. The most important thing is

    comfort.

    Sacramento area interior designer

Georgia George follows a method she

learned several years ago from a mentorwhose first step with clients was to do a

personal color analysis of both the hus-

    band and wife.

Ive been following that premise and

can look at people and determine what

style they fall into, George said.

For instance, winter is a high contrast

person, who likes striking contrasts, black

and white, gray and red, she said.

Spring is brighter and more cheerful

and likes bright pinks and bright blues,

she said. Thats the season when every-

thing is budding, leaves are bright and

    daffodils are blooming.

Summer colors are a little more muted,

a softer spring version with mauves

    gray blues.

With fall, I see autumn colors, brow

rust, purples and reds. We see the fall

ors in the trees, she said.

them both happy. Or she would suggest

doing the husbands home office in hisstyle.

Often people dont realize what they

like, but they are more comfortable in the

    right setting, she said.

She suggests clients visit the website

    www.Houzz.com, which has thousands of

photographs categorized by styles such as

    Mediterranean,

    Asian, eclectic, mod-

    ern and others. Plus

    there are innumer-

    able photographs of

    rooms and spaces in

    homes.

    I tell clients to go

    onto the site and

    create an idea book

    of 30 to 40 photo-

    graphs of what they

    like. Its a wonderful

confirmation of what appeals to them and

gives me insight into what they like,

George said. Its a fun, fun website and a

    fun thing to do.

People look at the latest trends, George

    said, but they are changing.

The Tuscany style is going to a more

lighter, cleaner look, George said. Its not

quite so heavy as before. And people with

more formal homes are getting more casu-

al, with a much lighter look.

Often what dictates styles are architec-tural review committees in new-home

    communities and planned developments,

    George said.

However, people are going for straighter,

    plainer lines with less clutter.

Whatever the style, its comfort that

    counts.

    Often people

    dont realize

    what they

    like, but they

    are more

    comfortable

    setting.Georgia George,interior designer
