Paul Page enters his 25th year as the head baseball coach at Ohio Dominican University. Page is the winningest coach in school history and was ranked amongst the winningest NAIA coaches before ODU transitioned into the NCAA.

With over 30 years of coaching experience, Page developed the Ohio Dominican program into one of the premier baseball programs in the NAIA and guided the Panthers NCAA and GLIAC ranks. He earned his 800th win during the 2008 season and left the NAIA level with 864 victories, which ranked in the top 13 of the NAIA in career wins. Page also compiled a winning percentage of .683 in the NAIA, which ranked him fi fth overall among active coaches at that level.

In 1988, Page was hired as Ohio Dominican’s third athletic director and head base-ball coach. As athletic director, he helped build the ODU athletic department into a conference and national power until 2004 when he decided to focus strictly on the baseball program. A tireless worker, he is credited as a key initiator of many ODU athletic department fundraisers and the improvement and expansion of athletic facilities. He played an important role in the planning and development of Alumni Hall, which opened in 1989.

In the dugout, Page has been named conference coach of the year fi ve times and twice named district baseball coach of the year. He has guided the baseball program to an 883-428-6 (.683) overall record in 24 seasons. Page has established the program as a national power, winning 11 regular season titles, nine conference tournament championships, six regional championships in thirteen appearances, and made six NAIA World Series appearances.

ODU has won at least 30 games in a season a remarkable 21 times in Page’s tenure, including 10 40-win seasons. In 1996, the Panthers notched a 36-20 record and fi nished fi fth at the NAIA World Series, the best fi nish in school history. ODU would go on to appear in the NAIA World Series from 2001-03, 2005 and 2008 as well, and the Panthers would fi nish the 2005 campaign with a school-record 47 wins.

In his time at ODU, Page has produced 39 All-Americans and 20 Academic All-Americans. Under his tutelage, former Panther southpaw Jonathan Sanchez reached the big leagues and helped the San Francisco Giants to the 2010 World Series title. Former Panther pitcher Ryan Robowski climbed to the AAA level with the Detroit Tigers organization in 2011 as well.

Page, a Williamstown, West Virginia native, graduated from Muskingum College in 1973, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in history and was an all-conference catcher.

After his days as a Muskie, Page continued his education at Mississippi State. He coached for two seasons under legendary coach Ron Polk as a graduate assistant

Chris Wallace enters his third season as a member of the Panthers baseball coaching staff. Wallace will serve as the ODU pitching and catching instructor.

Wallace brings an outstanding baseball resume to Ohio Dominican University and has experienced success as both a player and coach at numerous levels. After a stellar career in three sports at Marion Harding High School, Wallace starred at Wright State University, becoming an All-League selection and leading the Raiders to three Midwestern Collegiate Conference titles and an NCAA Regional berth.

Following his junior campaign, Wallace was a 14th round pick of the New York Yankees, and he spent fi ve years playing with the Yankee organization.

After his playing career, Wallace became the varsity pitching coach at Gahanna Christian and Pickerington North High Schools. In four years of work, the teams combined for an 85-13 record and made two state championship appearances. Under his tutelage, six pitchers and every catcher went on to play at the collegiate level.

SEASON PREVIEW

With a balance between a strong returning nucleus and a large, talented group of newcomers to push them for playing time, Ohio Dominican’s baseball team enters the 2012 campaign with hopes of returning to its perennial perch atop the conference standings. After making six NAIA World Series trips and claiming 14 conference champion-ships, the Panthers fi nished in fi fth place in their fi rst season in the GLIAC in 2011. ODU wasn’t eligible to compete in the conference tournament as a transitioning NCAA member, but fi nished just 2.5 games out of a potential postseason bid. With six returning position starters and 27 newcomers comprising the 40-man roster, head coach Paul Page expects ODU to be back in the hunt for that conference tournament berth. “If the freshmen perform as we hope and if the upper-classmen fi nd some consis-tency, we can challenge the best teams in the conference,” he said. “We can get to the postseason play and we can be successful. It is a great challenge but an even better opportunity to get back on track.”Catchers Redshirt junior Zack Dascenzo saw a lot of playing time in 2011 and responded well, batting .294 with two homers and 14 RBI on the season. He started 29 games, including 20 behind the plate. A quartet of freshmen will push Dascenzo behind the plate, including Kyle Tisdale, Kevin Lydic, Brad Taylor and Austin Butler. Page said that this is the

deepest group of catchers that the baseball team has had in years.

“Dascenzo had a solid campaign last year but needs to continue to improve,” Page

said. “Tisdale showed fl ashes of brilliance defensively and in the batter’s box. Lydic

is a highly regarded recruit who sat out the fall recovering from shoulder

surgery, Taylor showed the ability to compete and Butler was regarded as a Top-75 player by several recruiting agencies.”

Infi eld The graduation of all-conference performer Felix Brown at second base is the biggest loss in the infi eld for ODU, although the Panthers will be strength-ened by the healthy return of senior shortstop Tyler Zaidel, who was limited to 31 games in 2011 due to injuries. Zaidel, an Honorable Mention All-GLIAC player last year despite the injuries, batted .266 for ODU and scored 14 runs.

“For us to be a force in the conference, it’s important

for Tyler to stay healthy,” Page said. “He’s a heady player who

understands the game and can make all the plays.

The other three infi eld spots are up for grabs, as just two other players return

in the infi eld. Back is senior utility man Billy Tecklenburg, who also battled injuries but

appeared in 21 games, and sophomore Anthony Raschilla, who made 24 starts at fi rst and third base

and hit .257 with a pair of home runs. Up the middle, freshmen Vince Bartolone, John Simindinger, Kenny Dixon and Jerry McCartney will vie for at bats, as will junior college transfer Chase Westphal. “Felix Brown was outstanding in every phase of the game, but a number of our younger players appear ready for the challenge,” Page said. “Bartolone played well in the fall, but he will have to fi ght to hold off the challenges of others. Consistency is the key word.” At fi rst base, Raschilla will compete for time with freshman Jake Sim-merman, whom Page said had an outstanding fall. Christian Prince, who red-shirted last spring after transfer-ring, and freshmen Cole Carpenter and Austin Butler , are in the mix for playing time both at fi rst base and designated hitter. At the hot corner, junior college transfer Ryan Rovnak has impressed with the glove, and freshman Tyler Watkins bounced back from a broken hand early in the fall to lead the team in hitting. “Rovnak was stellar defensively but needs to be a bit more consistent at the plate,” Page said. “Watkins needs to continue improving his glove work.”

Outfi eld Four returning lettermen headline the competition for the three outfi eld spots, though a pair of freshmen could easily crack the lineup as well. Senior Evan Shaw made 45 starts in center in 2011 and led the GLIAC with 20 stolen bases while hitting .261. Classmate Austin Grate is the top returning hitter in the lineup after he batted .322 last spring with a .469 on-base percentage, and fellow senior John Bowron made 23 starts for ODU as well. Also back is sophomore Bryan Rudolph, who hit .317 in GLIAC play and made 26 starts.

“Rudolph was outstanding this fall both with the glove and the bat, but he has to become more consistent,” Page said. “Shaw, Bowron and

Grate have each shown signs of being all-conference type performers.”

The top freshmen in the competition for time include Matt Jurevicius and Marcus Schluessler,

whom Page said both played their best in the biggest moments in the fall. Also challeng-

ing for time will be Ian Sullinger and Kyle Suminski.

Pitching Playing upwards of six GLIAC games a week, adding depth to the pitching staff was a top priority for the Panthers in the off-season, and 10 freshmen will join an experienced core of starters for ODU in 2012. Junior Alex Borgan and sophomore Sean Blackburn have both shown potential to be top-of-the-rotation talent. Both won fi ve games last year as Borgan was one of the conference leaders in starts and innings and defeated No. 1 Georgia College early in the year, while Blackburn was amongst the league leaders with a .196 batting average against. Junior Nick Venditti led the team

with a 4.71 ERA and has pitched well in big games in his career, and hard-

throwing righty Erik Lamka, a senior, made eight starts in 2011.

Based on their performances in the fall, a quintet of freshmen will step on the

mound early for ODU. Austin Bueter, Alberto Canales, Cole Carpenter, Daniel Mooney and

Austin Monnin will push the returners for spots in the rotations and out of the bullpen.

Also in the mix for innings will be Marques Pagan, Jeff Peters, Brandon Bresler, Tucker Hughes and Josh Hen-

derson, while lefty Kevin Clark could be used as a specialist and Bartolone saw some time on the mound in the fall as well.

“We are very optimistic about the potential of the staff,” Page said. “There is no question we are deeper on the mound now than at any time in the past few years.”

The conference changed its name to the AMC for the 1999 season. Then the post season conference tournament was eliminated prior to the 2000 season. For the 2000 season teams go from regular season play on to sectionals then the regional tournament.

University OverviewOhio Dominican University is an accredited four-year liberal arts institution, founded in 1911 in the Catholic and Dominican traditions. The university has more than 3,100 students and offers undergraduate degrees in over 50 majors as well as six graduate degree programs. Ohio Dominican uses a student-centered approach, with a commitment to quality teaching and learning and a number of academic programs of distinction.

Academics are at the heart of everything done at Ohio Dominican University. Institutions of higher learning exist to provide education for their students, and that education starts in the classroom. It continues, of course, on athletic fi elds and in residence halls, in rehearsals and clubs, in the library and the lab, but it begins with the relationship between students and their instructors.

ODU’s mission is grounded in our identity as a Catholic and Dominican liberal arts institution. The University’s motto - To contemplate truth and share the fruits of that contemplation with others - serves as our guiding principle of teaching and learning. ODU’s core curriculum, taken by all students, focuses on seven learning outcomes that collectively identify the institution’s expectations for what all students will be able to be and do as Ohio Dominican graduates. Additionally, students complete a sequence of courses in one of 50 undergraduate major areas of study including those in the arts, sciences, and professions.

Led by a talented faculty dedicated to excellence in teaching and commit-ted to helping students learn, ODU’s student engagement model focuses on serving the whole student through personal attention and assistance in collaboration with the institution’s Division of Student Development. Ohio Dominican is fully accredited and offers academic programs at the baccalaureate and masters degree levels through fi ve divisions: Arts and Letters; Social and Behavioral Sciences; Mathematics, Computer and Natural Sciences; Business; and Education.

The University is signifi cantly expanding the level of on-campus student extracurricular activities and improving residential life. At the same time, Ohio Dominican has expanded its extracurricular offerings, providing a greater number of on-campus activities for both residential and commuter students. A central focus has been the addition of a new Student Center and expansion of athletic programs, which attract student athletes and non-athletes alike, and foster alumni participation.

Student organizations and activities at ODU offer events and activities that relate to areas of academic interest, student government, artistic perfor-mance, multicultural identity, media, athletic, social, honorary, religious and service organizations. Ohio Dominican student activities and events are open to all students.

Over the past 10 years, Ohio Dominican has followed an aggressive expansion plan for its facilities which include three new residence halls; additional sports and recreation facilities; development of Sunbury Road as a gateway to the campus; the new Bishop James A Griffi n Student Center and a new science facility, Battelle Hall.

The 2010 - 2011 academic year will be a special time for the institution as its students, faculty, staff, alumni, community leaders and friends celebrate the University’s Centennial anniversary. Although the University will mark its Centennial birthday on October 5, 2011 (Founder’s Day), the calendar of events will commence in October 2010 and will continue through June 2012.

The Centennial theme, A Century of Transforming Lives, refl ects ODU’s Dominican heritage, history and tradition. This celebration encourages the University community to refl ect upon the transformative effect that Ohio Do-minican has had on the lives its faculty, students, alumni, staff and friends.

Ohio Dominican is focused on becoming the preeminent Catholic institution of higher learning, providing quality programs in both the liberal arts and the professions, committed to the fundamental value of liberal education, and deeply rooted in its Dominican tradition. Ohio Dominican is known for its student-centered and innovative approaches to teaching and learning; its commitment to excellence in academic and co-curricular programs; its commitment to service and community responsibility; its outstanding cam-pus facilities and resources; its global outreach in response to educational needs; and its reputation for distinction in values-based higher education.

Panther Field: Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Club Lacrosse

Ohio Dominican University continues to demonstrate progressive improve-ment to its athletic facilities with the addition of Panther Field. Built in 2004, our newest athletic facility is home to our football team and men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as our club level lacrosse team. To withstand the wear and tear of constant use, Panther Field is equipped with the latest in artifi cial surfaces, SprinTurf®. The fi eld has a seating capacity of 1,750 with a 42-foot press box located at the top of the home bleachers. Recent ad-ditions to Panther Field include bleachers on the guest side of the fi eld with a capacity of 500 and a building that houses a ticket offi ce, concession stand and restrooms. Lights were also recently added to the facility, an addition that makes Panther Field one of the fi ner facilities of its size in the Midwest. The new facility replaced ODU’s former natural grass soccer complex and is located next to Alumni Hall on the west side of campus.

Practice Field: Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Club Lacrosse, Located next to Panther Field is an all-natural grass football fi eld where the teams practice for upcoming games. The fi eld is complete with yard hashes and fi eld goal posts, and soccer or lacrosse nets can be moved in to accommodate every club and varsity sport.

Alumni Hall: Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball

Opened in 1989, Alumni Hall has a seating capacity of 3,000 and is the home of the women’s volleyball and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Alumni Hall was given a much needed renovation and expansion in 2009-10. One full-length basketball court was added, the hardwood was resurfaced, and bleachers were added to the far side of the court.

After the renovation all of the coaches now have an offi ce on the second fl oor of Alumni. There are also several rooms that coaches may utilize to review game tape, hold team meetings and meet with future and current Panthers. Some of the other amenities in Alumni Hall are four locker rooms, the Black and Gold Room, a spacious conference room, a refurbished weight room that is available to both students and student-athletes, and an athletic training room. Alumni Hall has the capability of accommodating three regulation size basketball and volleyball courts.

Panther Courts: Men’s and Women’s Tennis

Also on the grounds of the Ohio Dominican Sports Complex west side location are six regulation size tennis courts complete with lights. The courts were recently resurfaced with a blue Latex-ite® coating that resembles the courts that host the U.S. Open Championship. The tennis courts are enclosed with a green chain link fence to accommodate the Panther men’s and women’s tennis teams.

Panther Valley/Frank Damian Field: Baseball

First time visitors are pleasantly surprised by the hidden beauty of Panther Valley as they descend upon ODU’s prized baseball diamond. Sunken well below street-level and masked by plentiful trees, the only evidence of what awaits below is the echoing “ping” of aluminum bats meeting baseballs. The fi eld is complete with a batting cage, home bullpen beyond the left fi eld line

and a visitor bullpen along the right fi eld line. A recent addition to Panther Valley is a state-of-the-art scoreboard complete graphics and animatronics. Panther Valley has developed year-by-year to the point that it is now consid-ered one of the fi nest college baseball facilities in the country.

Panther Softball Field: Softball

Over the years Panther Softball Field has evolved into one of the nicest facili-ties in the state of Ohio. The brick dust fi eld is routinely praised by Panther opponents as the epitome of what a fi eld should be. With its dimensions of 210 to the corners and 225 to straight away center, this softball complex features enclosed dugouts, a scoreboard, bullpens beyond the left fi eld line, and an underground irrigation system.

Hitting Facility: Baseball and Softball

Located next to the softball fi eld is the hitting facility for both the baseball and softball teams. The hitting facility provides a place for both teams to re-fi ne their skills through the harsh Central Ohio weather. With the retractable nets, the hitting facility contains three batting cages complete with pitching mounds and pitching machines.

Panther Training Facility

Along with the addition of the new stadium in 2004, the Panthers added a 7,500 square foot training facility west of the main parking lot. The facility is equipped with the latest in hammer strength weight training equipment and ODU’s second athletic training room. Offi ces for athletic training personal are also located in the new facility.

Cumberland Trail Golf Club

The Panthers are fortunate to call Cumberland Trail Golf Club their home. The course, designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, opened in 1999 and measures up to 7,205 yards from the back tees. Known for its excellent conditioning and diffi cult design, Cumberland Trail ranks fourth in Central Ohio among public golf courses, according to Mid Ohio Golfer, and received 3.5 stars from Golf Digest. The greens at Cumberland Trail are considered by many to be the fi nest in the Columbus area and challenge even the best putters. The ODU golf team has unlimited access to the facility which includes a driving range and large practice green.

Golf Practice Facilities

ODU golfers have the ability to practice year round at one of two practice facilities. Bridgeview Driving Range, located just 6 minutes from campus, serves as the outdoor practice facility during the Spring and Fall Grass tees, a large putting green, and an excellent short game practice area are just a few of the benefi ts available to our teams.

When the weather turns cold, ODU players practice at “The Dome”, the largest indoor driving range in Ohio. “The Dome” measures a full 90 yards from front to back and the indoor temperature is kept around 60 degrees. It provides the perfect environment for the golfers to improve during the cold winter months.
