THE GLIAC

2012-13 OHIO DOMINICAN TRACK & FIELD

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 40 years.

Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980.  After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992.

After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990.After nine years as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school.

The GLIAC entered a new era in the 1995-96 school year. Prior to that time, all GLIAC member institutions were located in the state of Michigan. On Dec. 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and

Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995.

On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew from the conference after the 1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status.

The GLIAC membership changed again when Tiffin University of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007. The addition of Tiffin left the GLIAC with 12 full-time members as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference after the 2007-08 season.

The GLIAC entered a new era during the 2009-10 academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presided over the league for 17 years, retired on June 30, 2009. The longest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC, Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 full members and two associate members. Also under his leadership, the conference has grown to offering championships in 21 sports while rising to prominence on the national level as GLIAC teams and student-athletes have achieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play.

The Conference expanded on July 1, 2010 when Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, joined the GLIAC. The league further expanded in July 2012 when Malone University and Walsh University, both located in the Canton, Ohio area, became the

15th and 16th GLIAC members.

The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Management Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator.

The presidency of the GLIAC Management Council is rotated alphabetically by school, with Suzanne Sanregret, Director of Athletics at Michigan Tech, serving as GLIAC President in 2012-13. Dr. Glenn Mroz, President of Michigan Tech, will serve as the chairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year.

The GLIAC made history in 2009 when it hired Dell Robinson as commissioner. Robinson became the first ethnic minority to serve as D-II commissioner of a non-historically black university conference when he began his duties on July 1, 2009.

Assisting Robinson are: Penny Cook, Asst. Commissioner for Compliance/SWA, Jeff Ligney, Asst. Commissioner for Media Relations; Mike McCann, Supervisor of Football Officials; Kim Vieira, Supervisor of Soccer Officials; Jeanne Skinner, Supervisor of Volleyball Officials; Rob Doss, Supervisor of Women’s Basketball Officials; Bill Ek, Supervisor of Men’s Basketball Officials; and Rich Fetchiet, Assignor of Baseball Umpires.

The Ohio Dominican track and field team may only be in its second year of existence, but coach Paul Benedict’s expectations and excitement remain high. The team, which experienced success in its first year of competition, has almost doubled in size, increasing from around 35 athletes in 2011 to 58 in 2012.“We’re developing new track and field traditions at Ohio Dominican, even in our second year,” Benedict said. “The coaching staff is extremely excited to see the sophomores coming in to see how they’ll improve and the strong freshman class to see what they can do as well. Overall, I can’t be more excited for track and field this year.”With the larger size of the team, Benedict said he hopes to have a men’s team that will compete in every event and he said he expects the women’s side to be much stronger than last year.He also expects the larger numbers to contribute to more success.“We’ve been able to have more individuals come

in, which breeds competition in practice,” Benedict said. “We’ve been able to work on just getting better in practice, which in turn would help us on the weekends.”Although last season saw some individual standouts, Benedict said he was not able to pinpoint specific athletes to watch this year based solely on training.“I hope that everybody has a great season,” he said. “At this point, I just hope that everyone is stronger and faster coming into this season than they were last year.”Benedict said a team in only its second season faces many challenges, but they are able to make the best of what they have.“There are several challenges, but I think that’s what helps us build character as far as a program,” he said. “Any challenges we seem to face, we are resilient and overcome them.”Although the team is comprised mainly of sophomores and freshmen, Benedict said he is not concerned about a lack of senior leadership affecting the team.

Instead of relying on upperclassmen like most teams, the Panthers will look to their sophomores as leaders.“They will definitely offer a level of growth and maturity coming into this season, which hopefully in turn will help inspire the freshmen this year,” Benedict said.He points to the sophomores’ growth and experience as a main factor in the team’s success.“Our sophomores have had the opportunity to go through a full year of college track and field,” he said. “So as far as their growth, mentally they will probably be 10 times better than they were last year.”Benedict said he believes track and field should be fun for Panther supporters and the team can build a buzz around campus.“All of our athletes on campus have been able to prove themselves and hopefully we can develop more of a following for track and field here at Ohio Dominican,” he said. “We’re new but we’re still going to show up at every meet and compete.”

PAUL BENEDICTHEAD COACHSECOND YEARMUSKINGUM 2005

Paul Benedict enters his second season at Ohio Dominican University as the head men’s and women’s track and field coach, and his fourth season as the head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country teams. Cross country was added as the Panthers’ 13th and 14th varsity sports in 2006, while the track and field teams began competition in 2011-12.

Benedict took over a very young group of runners at Ohio Dominican in 2008 and has propelled the cross country program to new heights. He led the Panthers to their best season in school history, as ODU set new team records at the Wilmington College Invitational. Benedict saw the men’s and women’s individual school records broken and a number of personal best times were set throughout the season.

The cross country teams continued their successful turnaround with another outstanding season in 2009. Benedict led the women’s team to their first meet championship, had their first National Qualifier and was named the Midlands/Independent Conference Coach of the Year.

No stranger to the local talent in the Columbus area, Benedict graduated from Westerville South High School in 2001 and has stayed active in the local running community as an OHSAA and NCAA Cross Country and Track official for 10 years before accepting his current post at ODU.

Benedict received his Bachelor of Arts in Business in 2005 while earning four varsity letters in cross country and track at Muskingum College. He has completed the Ironman and qualified to run in the Boston Marathon in April 2011.

2011-12 YEAR IN REVIEW

The 2011-2012 season was Ohio Dominican’s first with a track and field team, after being officially accepted as a member of NCAA Division II on July 8, 2011. It didn’t take long for the Panthers to make a splash and score their first win in ODU history.

Although the team was made up of mostly freshmen, the youngsters competed at the Purple & White Invite at Capital University on December 10, 2011, where the men took first and the women placed fourth. It was a surprising showing from a team competing collegiately for the first time.

Tyler Fifer was a major contributor to the Panthers’ success, as he scored points at both the GLIAC Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Also scoring points at the Outdoor Championships was the 4x100 relay team consiting of Darrell Harley, Brandon Anthony, Malik Tuck and Germaine McAlpine.

Following the indoor season, eight athletes were honored by the GLIAC with academic awards, while seven athletes earned the honors after the outdoor track and field season.
