Welcome to MarengoWelcome to Marengo, the
county seat of Iowa County.
Located along the scenic Iowa
River, the city is along the route
of Highway 6 in the north-central
portion of the county. It was
founded in 1845 as the “seat of
justice for Iowa County” by three
commissioners appointed by the
territorial legislature.
One of the commissioners,
according to the “History
of Iowa County,” christened
the name from a river valley
near Allesandria, Italy where
Napolean Bonaparte drove off an
army of Austrian solders in 1803.
Due in large part to Marengo’s
location to the resources of the
Iowa River, the town became
the commercial center of Iowa
County. The same river that
provided the abundance of
opportunity in the early days
also caused numerous fl oods
over the course of the last 150
years. Several attempts were
made to reduce the damage
associated with the fl ooding of
the Iowa River and Bear Creek.
Around 1900, a new channel
of the Iowa River was cut in an
attempt to minimize fl ooding.
The “Old River Bed” near Lions
Park is all that is left of the
former path of the Iowa River.
Flooding throughout the 20th
Century prompted a series of
efforts to provide protection to
the rapidly growing community.
Levees were constructed in the
1930s, 1950s and late 1970s.
The present levee, administered
by the Drainage Districts 10 and
12, was completed in 1979 and
protects the city from Bear Creek
and the Iowa River. The pumping
station located at the far east

year the city received a state

8 Marengo Guide 2012
Nestled in the heart of the Iowa River Valley,
Marengo is just 30 miles southwest of Cedar
Rapids, 30 miles west of Iowa City, and 7 miles
north of Exit 216 on Interstate 80. Marengo is
proud of its “small town” atmosphere. There are a wide variety
of shopping, dining and recreational activities, including some
of the best hunting and fi shing in the state of Iowa.
The City of Marengo operates under a mayor-council
form of government. The mayor and fi ve-member council
are elected at-large and are non-partisan. The mayor is the
presiding offi cer of the council. The mayor is not a member
of the council and may not vote as a member. However,
Marengo’s mayor does retain the authority to veto any
ordinance, amendment or resolution passed by the city
council. In the absence of the mayor, the council meeting is
conducted by the mayor pro-tem.
The first council meeting of the incorporated City of
Marengo was held Nov. 26, 1859. Present were: Mayor E.
C. Hendershot, H. M. Martin, E. L. Ogle, D. Sturdevant
and Recorder Robert McKee. At that meeting McKee was
“authorized and instructed to procure at the expense of said
town, a book suitable for a record of by-laws and ordinances,
also a book in which to keep a record of the proceedings of the
council, four quire of cap paper and six pounds of candles.”
Council meetings are now held the second and fourth
Mondays of each month beginning at 6 p.m. Learn more about
the City of Marengo at the Web site www.marengoiowa.com.

• The city square park, located in the 100 block between
East Main Street and East Washington Street, has two recently
remodeled shelter houses (perfect for get-togethers); brand
new playground equipment; an old fashioned bandstand
and a beautifully restored fountain. Every summer, the city
celebrates the Third of July with a fi reworks spectacular, a
street dance and games and activities for children.
• Gateway Park and Preserve, located at the north end of
Court Avenue, occupies a portion of the southern bank of the
Iowa River. The 131-acre site includes a 41-acre lake and a
12-acre pond, which were created through the excavation of
sand and gravel for a concrete business. The Iowa County
Conservation Board purchased the property in 2001; it is
jointly maintained by both the city and the county. The park
is open for fi shing and boating activity with easy access to the
Iowa River. The park and preserve are also home to a pair of
American bald eagles. An arboretum is in the development
process, thanks to the many donations and volunteers. Biking
and hiking trails are located along the river’s levy.
• Marengo Municipal Swimming Pool is located at 1277
Franklin Ave. The pool is open to the public from noon to
7 p.m. seven days a week from Memorial Day weekend
to shortly before school starts in August. Daily pool
announcements can be heard by calling 642-5676.
• Lions’ Park is located north of Marengo at 1350 Eastern
Ave. The park includes several baseball and softball diamonds
that are available to the public. There are also picnic shelters,
playground equipment and plenty of parking space.
• A new horseshoe court was built in 2010 in the park east
of Marengo City Hall. The horseshoe courts are regulation
size and will host tournaments in the future. There are also
rolle bolle courts, a favorite local game of Belgian tradition. A
shelter house is also available for public use.

2012 Marengo Guide 21
During your summer, plan to come visit the Iowa County
Pioneer Heritage Museum, described by many as the
“best-kept secret in eastern Iowa.” Yet, we do not wish
to remain a secret. There is much to see and lots to share with
your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews, and cousins
here at the Pioneer Heritage Museum.
The Iowa County Historical Society was organized in
November of 1963. This group gathered information and
materials pertaining to Iowa County history for the express
purpose of preserving and exhibiting the county’s history
which then could educate present and future generations.
Shortly after its organization, the Historical Society assumed
the preservation of the Gritter Creek Country School located
west of North English. This school building remains at its
original location and is the only brick one-room schoolhouse
remaining in Iowa County today. It is maintained by the
Historical Society and is open to the public.
In 1964 the Historical Society acquired the Henry Meyer
Bachelor Cabin and Log House located near Homestead.
These buildings were moved onto a rented lot near the square
in Marengo. In 1984 the society was able to purchase a lot
and Quonset building along East South Street in Marengo,
which was being vacated by the Iowa County Fair Board.
Subsequently, the Bachelor Cabin and Log House were
moved to these grounds and in about 1990 the Victor Depot
was reassembled on the grounds to create the Pioneer Heritage
Museum. An addition was placed on the south end of the
Quonset building and this entire building then became the
Heritage Center. Around 1992, the Bees’ Gas Station from
Hartwick was accepted and moved to the grounds.
A grant was received to help create and develop the resource
library for the preservation of paper documents related to
people, schools, churches, cemeteries and communities of Iowa
County. This library, as well as the museum at 675 East South
St., is open to the public each summer and by appointment at
any time of the year.
Effective June 4, the facility will be open each Thursday,
Friday and Saturday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. Call the
museum at 642-7018 if an appointment is needed. The
museum is maintained through memberships, door donations
and generous gifts from many through the years. The museum
is staffed entirely by volunteers.
Come spend an afternoon with us. We are always happy to
receive any family treasure that relates to Iowa County which
you are willing to let us copy or preserve for the years to
come.

22 Marengo Guide 2012
The Marengo Pioneer-Republican celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2006. Throughout the years there have been many changes in management
and fewer changes in name, but the purpose of the newspaper has remained the same, to serve the infor-mation, communication and entertainment needs of the people of Iowa County.
The P-R’s progenitor, the Iowa Weekly Visitor, made its debut Sept. 6, 1856, with Clinton Edwards as the pub-lisher and editor.
Edwards’ venture at the time was considered pre-carious, for the population of Marengo was less than 300 and the people generally poor. Money was scarce and almost any usable commodity was taken in payment for subscription.
The newspaper became the Marengo Republican in 1871 under the guidance of editors Spering and Cren-shaw, who were both staunch supporters of President Lincoln.
In 1923, Fred Cook purchased the competing newspa-per, The Marengo Democrat, and changed the name to The Marengo Pioneer. Then in 1927, Mortimer Goodwin and K. R. Marvin purchased both the Marengo Repub-lican and the Marengo Pioneer, and since then, the community newspaper has been called the Marengo Pioneer-Republican.
Ownership was passed on to Glenn A. Ellis and Har-old V. Ellis in April 1930. The Ellises stayed with The Pioneer-Republican for over 30 years.
Marengo Publishing Corporation (MPC) was founded in 1963 by Leland M. Turnbull, his son, James Turnbull, and long-time Pioneer-Republican editor James A. Mayer with the purchase of The Pioneer-Republican and The Blair-stown Press from the Ellises. Jim Turnbull became the acting president of MPC until his death in 1979.
In March 1979 Sheryl Turnbull (now Sandersfeld) was elected president of Marengo Publishing Corporation. Michael Simmons was named executive vice president and chief operations manager and became publisher for The NEWSpapers of Iowa County. Elected secretary was Don Magdefrau, Belle Plaine, and C. Edward Koch, Williamsburg, was treasurer and business manager.
The North English Record was added to NEWSpapers of Iowa County in 1979.

MARENGO PUBLIC LIBRARY
Marengo Public Library
One of the main attractions
of Marengo is the Marengo
Public Library, 235 East Hilton
St. The library offers services
and programs to visitors of all
ages.
Upon entering the Marengo
Public Library, visitors fi nd the
steps to the upper and lower
levels as well as the elevator,
which makes the library
handicap accessible. The slot for
the new drop box is next to the
front door.
In the center of the main
level is the circulation desk and
librarians’ work areas. These are
spacious and much more usable
than before.
There are three main areas where the adult readers will fi nd their
books.
Two of these are in the expanded area to the east. In the north
half is the collection of non-fi ction books. The audiobooks are also
near them, along the east wall. In the center of this section are the
biographies, Westerns and science fi ction books.
Comfortable chairs, end tables and lamps separate the north and
south areas of this part of the library. The south end contains the
fi ction books. Along the south wall are the paperback books. Next
to them is the inviting bay window where readers can relax in the
wing chairs as they browse through a book.
Younger children will fi nd their fi ction and non-fi ction books,
audio books and videos in their own section of the library next to
the adult fi ction books. Their large reading area includes two Iowa
rockers, one for adults and one for children, as well as another
cushioned rocker. On the large table are two computers only for
preschoolers and lower elementary students. Some of the favorite
games and toys from the old library are available. It is an inviting
place for parents and their children to have some quality “together”
time.
The fi replace room, which is in the original northwest section, is
the area to fi nd the newspapers and magazines.
The fi replace itself was walled up for years and rediscovered
during construction. The mantel has been restored and a gas fi re is
now in place.
The room also contains the Christian fi ction and large print
books. The new bookshelves are there as well. This room is an
enjoyable and elegant place to sit, relax, chat or thumb through the
periodicals.
Featured on the walls of the fi replace room are historic pictures
of Marengo from the early 1900s.
One of the main features of the renovated library is the
computer lab. With nine Dell desktop computers, all with fl at screen
monitors, library consumers can search the Internet at top speed.
The room also features a fl at-screen monitor hanging on the wall
for instructional and meeting
purposes.
Teens and older elementary
students have their fi ction and
non-fi ction books, audiobooks
and videos in the new teen room
located next to the computer
lab. It is outfi tted with tables
for doing homework and group
studies. There is a davenport
and chairs for lounging and
reading. The Tiffany lamps lend
a special ambience. Various
forms of artwork enhance the
room to help make it a place for
many learning experiences.
Located on the lower level
of the library are the community
meeting room, the children’s activity room and the library friends
room. The community meeting room can be reserved by different
groups in the community by calling the library. These attractively
decorated rooms have wi fi access, tables, chairs and other
amenities according to their purpose. In the hall are the interesting
framed blueprints of the original Carnegie building. The new
restrooms are also located on this level.
The children’s program room on the lower level of the library
is equipped with tables, chairs, shelves for craft items, a sink for
clean-up and other amenities making it tailored to the needs of
children.
People who would like to help with the reading programs may
speak to a librarian or to Lynn Zimba, volunteer coordinator. There
are many other volunteer opportunities available which can be done
on a regular or a one-time basis.
The abundance of space allows the library to offer more
programs, with a series of guest speakers throughout the year. The
library also offers a six-week series of computer literacy classes for
adults. There is no fee.
The Friends of Marengo Public Library Foundation are working
to raise funds and seek tax deductible donations for the foundation,
which will help to assure the continued development of the library.
They will also help to enhance the library programs.
New members are encouraged to join. There is a need for people
to give fresh ideas, to help with planning and/or executing those
plans and to aid in enhancing the library programs in various ways.
The meetings are held once a month at the library.
There are many opportunities for people to continue
volunteering and becoming part of the library operation. Ask
a librarian or the volunteer coordinator Lynn Zimba for more
information.
The phone number for the Marengo Public Library is
(319) 741-3825.

Exit 211. Follow V-52 south three miles, turn west onto the access road
and parking lot just past the residence.
• Berstler Woods is located two miles south of Millersburg. The 69-
acre oak-hickory timber and grassland is rich in Native American history
as well as an excellent wildlife area. The Iowa County Conservation

open grassland, owned by the state and managed by the Iowa County
Conservation Board. Hunting is permitted in this upland bird habitat.

as the “ballast pit,” this 13-acre wildlife area is located one mile west of

GATEWAY PARKGATEWAY PARKG
ateway Park and Preserve, located at the north end of Court Avenue in Marengo on the southern bank of the Iowa River, was created from 131 acres of land purchased from Frank
and Charleen Disterhoft and Marengo Ready Mix. The project site includes a 41-acre lake and a 12-acre
pond for fishing created through the excavation of sand and gravel used for a concrete business. There is a network of walking and biking trails, which encompass the lake and pond. While still in early development, Iowa County Conservation hopes Gateway Park and Preserve will be a viable asset to the community, county and surrounding area.
Gateway Park Arboretum is nestled on the southern edge of the park within 7.5 acres. It includes a memory garden plus other gardens and the veterans’ memorial with the inscription: “In honor of those who served proudly — lest we forget.”
In 2004 volunteers constructed the first 1.5 miles of a 3.6-mile walk/bike trail funded by a $65,000 trails grant from the National Park Service and the Blaine Fund. In 2009, R.A.I.V. Committee and other volunteers finished the western stretch of trail from the previous end to 212 Boulevard, a distance of 2.1 miles. The trail runs along the top of the levee.
Future plans for the park include bioswales, a children’s water garden, wetlands preservation and restoration, education gardens, a lakeside pavillion, a memorial pavillion, a wedding pavillion, picnic area and a welcome center.
Gateway Park and Preserve is Marengo’s newest park located at the city’s
northern end. The park is currently open for fi shing activity and contains
a boat ramp for access to the Iowa River. The arboretum continues to
develop, thanks to many donations and volunteers. Biking and hiking
trails are located along the river’s levee.
Gateway Park is a great place to walk or bike and to enjoy nature without
having to get too far out of town.

After being in operation for almost four years, the Marengo Community Center, Inc., continues to look for ways to support the community.
The board was formed to help maintain the Marengo Senior Dining site as well as to develop new programs and strengthen existing services to the residents of Marengo and the surrounding area.
The board of directors for Marengo Community Center, Inc., is always looking for volunteers to help serve and deliver meals as well as provide other functions at the site.
Marengo Community Center, Inc., also depends on donations for its survival.
The Marengo Community Center, Inc., is independent from the City of Marengo, however, the city does donate $1,000 annually, plus the city reimburses the board for the water and sewer bills.
The board members are looking to undertake several fundraisers this year. They are looking at city garage sales and soup suppers, among other ideas.
The Marengo Community Center Inc., does rent out the Marengo Senior Dining site for other activities, such as anniversaries, birthday celebrations, etc. The rent is $75, plus a refundable deposit of $50. It is available most evenings and weekends.
To rent the facility, contact board treasurer Julie Alexander at (319) 642-7458.
The Marengo Senior Dining site is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., though folks often stay later.
The bridge club meets every Tuesday, which includes 12 to 16 members. The garden club, the friendship club and the homemakers club also meet at the site on a regular basis.
Cards and puzzles are available for use, and musical entertainment is provided every Thursday.
Including delivery, the site averages 35 to 45 meals a day on regular days. On Tuesdays, when the bridge club meets, the site averages 60 meals a day.
Reservations are requested one day in advance. For more information or to make a reservation, call (319) 642-5817.
Horizons, a subsidiary of the Heritage Agency for Aging, provides the meals served at the Marengo Senior Dining site, as well as the salary for the dining site manager.
Marengo Community Center, Inc., was formed to maintain and fund the dining site itself, located at 1083 Court Ave., Marengo.
The Marengo Community Center, Inc., pays for rent at the site, utilities and anything the landlord does not provide.
Meetings of the Marengo Community Center Board of Directors are held the fi rst Wednesday of the month at 12:30 p.m. at the Marengo Community Center (senior dining site).

Marengo's Marengo's Third of Third of
JulyJuly
The parade during the annual Third of July celebration brings many sights and sounds to the city, whether young, children or adult. There’s lots of fun
every summer, as thousands descend upon the city for games, music and much more. The whole thing ends in a bang that night with fi reworks.

The Pennies for the Pool
Committee is a group
of individuals dedicated
to raising funds for the
replacement of the current pool to
serve the community of Marengo.
Our current pool was built in 1975.
The condition of the pool and the
infrastructure supporting it has
deteriorated beyond repairs and will
need to be replaced soon. The city has
made some minor repairs lately but
those are just band-aid repairs to keep it
functioning until funds can be raised to
replace the pool.
Our group formed in June of 2010.
Since then we have been working hard
at fundraisers to create a start up fund
and to fund a plan for the pool. We
have exceeded our fundraising goals
to date and have raised $25,000. We
have had members come up with many
creative ideas for fundraisers. These
have included pool parties, Schwan’s
sales, sports signs and driveway
paintings that show school spirit,
concession stands, Tiny Tigers sports
camps for younger children, Make and
Take craft days for elementary aged
kids, dances for junior high aged youth,
Trivia Night and partnering with the
Lion’s Club to make funnel cakes and
host fundraising dinners.
We have a small but energetic group
working to raise money for our pool.
We have experienced great support from
the community
and especially
our local
businesses. We
would like to
invite everyone
who cares about
rebuilding
the Marengo
Municipal
Pool to join
our group and
contribute your
time, ideas and
funding to this
project. It is a
wonderful place
of summertime
enjoyment for
our community’s
children
and adults alike. If you grew up in
Marengo, chances are, you learned to
swim at the city pool.
Our total project cost will be around
$2,000,000. We won’t be able to raise
all of this through fundraisers so we
will also be asking for donations from
individuals and businesses along with
applying for any grants we can fi nd. We
would like to raise over half the funds
needed in order for the city to be able to
afford to replace the pool.
We encourage all of you to visit our
Facebook page, http://www.facebook.

of Marengo’s website for additional
