HILLSBORO DOMINO'S 132 W MAIN ST HILLSBORO, OH 45133 (937) 393-9941 2265589 A fter her 90th birth- day, Mary Wolfe realized she wanted to share her life story not just for her grandchildren, but also for their grandchil- dren, to offer them a better understanding of their own lives. Her only obstacles were blindness and the diffi- culty of organizing decades of memories into a readable narrative. Fortunately, she found a kindred spirit in Hillsboro journalist Pat Lawrence and the two have produced, “The House That Mary Built,” a small book that chronicles Mary's life and the changing social land- scape around her. It follows Mary from her idyllic childhood in the 1920s through her years as a WWII “war widow” and details the pressures and consequences of an increas- ingly oppressive marriage. Although blind from macular degenerations for the past 25 years, in her early life Mary was a musi- cian, an avid reader, the Sinking Spring resident Mary Wolfe collaborated with local writer Pat Lawrence to chronicle the story of her life. DEAR ABBY:Whenever Isee a pregnant woman or anelderly person in line behindme who seems uncomfortableor tired, I always want to letthem go ahead of me. Is thisregarded as a nice gesture, ordoes it make them feel patheticand helpless? I do it with thebest intentions, but I don't wantto offend anyone.

-- RACHEL IN TENNESSEE

DEAR RACHEL: It'sregarded as a thoughtful ges-ture. If someone feels that yourdeference is offensive, then heor she is free to refuse yourgenerous offer. And if that hap-pens -- which I doubt will hap-pen frequently -- do not blameyourself for having extendedthe courtesy.

DEAR ABBY: I work in ahospital, and I'm sick and tiredof people "bombing" us withtheir perfume/cologne at levelsas suffocating as tear gas. Manypatients here have breathing dif-ficulties such as emphysema,COPD and asthma. Please havesome consideration for your fel-low man and stop at one squirtif you must use it at all. If wecan smell you before we seeyou, or if we are still sufferingfrom the perfume-inducedmigraine you caused long afteryou're gone, then you usedWAY TOO MUCH.

-- HAD ENOUGH IN BIRM-INGHAM, ALA.

DEAR HAD ENOUGH:You're absolutely right. When itcomes to fragrances, more isn'tbetter -- a little dab will do ya.Applying too much is not onlyoffensive, but actually can makesome well people sick and sickpeople sicker. And this is truenot only in hospitals, but also inelevators, offices and gyms.

DEAR ABBY:You printed aletter from me on Sept. 26,2011. It was signed "Lookingfor a Date -- in the Future."Thank you for printing it, andI'd like to give you an update onmy life.I now realize that men have

been approaching me quite fre-quently, but instead of showingoutright interest and asking mefor a date, they ask me to "hangout" or if I'm coming over totheir place -- as if they're con-firming plans we never made.Because of this I have been ona few dates that I didn't realizeWERE dates until after the fact. But I have also been on sev-

eral real dates with one particu-lar man I'm now seeing exclu-sively. When I saw him, I actu-ally took the first step andintroduced myself to himinstead of waiting for him tonotice and approach me. I'm soglad I did because although Ialways hoped that soul matesexist, I was hesitant to believethat "you just know." But I do!Better yet, he does, too. He'sthe kindest, most thoughtful, respectful man I have ever met,and I know I'm lucky to havefound him.I feel silly and disappointed

in myself for having gottenmarried before without feelingthis way, but I'm happily learn-ing from my mistake. I hopeyou'll print this so it will giveothers hope when it feels likethere is no hope to be had. Thanks again, Abby.

-- HAPPY READER IN TRIAN-GLE, VA.

DEAR HAPPY READER:You were sweet to write andgive me an update. Not all myreaders do, and it's always niceto read about happy endings. After reviewing your letter andlooking back at the first oneyou wrote, I'm reminded thatsometimes things happen whenthey're meant to and not before. In other words, you thoughtmen weren't interested in you,but the truth was you weren'tready for them to be. I wishyou and your special someone ahappy future together.

DEAR ABBY: My husbanddied unexpectedly eight monthsago, leaving me with two youngchildren to raise on my own.My parents are deceased. It hasbeen a long, hard road sincethen. I have tried to make suremy in-laws continue havingcontact with my children, encouraging visits to my homeand dropping the kids off attheir homes when they haveasked.I recently let everyone know

that, although I still miss myhusband terribly, I have beenlonely and I'm ready to startdating again. I was franklyunprepared for the barrage ofabsolute HATE that was sentmy way by my husband's par-ents and siblings. They have cutoff all contact with me and thusmy children, which has left mestunned and sent my kids reel-ing from even more loss in theirlives. Is there something wrong or

disrespectful with my wantingcompanionship and to be happyagain? My in-laws seem toexpect me to be in mourningforever, which is cruel andincredibly inconsiderate. Pleasehelp me find peace with all ofthis because it's tearing me upinside.

-- IN TURMOIL IN DETROIT

DEAR IN TURMOIL:Your former in-laws may havebeen less upset had you waiteda full year before letting "every-one" know that you're ready tostart dating and going on withyour life. Not knowing them, Ican't be sure what has causedthem to shun you and theirgrandchildren, who are theirlast link to their lost son andbrother. You may find peace through

acceptance of the fact that asone chapter in life has closed, another is opening up and youwill have a full life ahead ofyou. That is not wrong. Asmuch as you may have lovedyour husband, now that he isgone you have every right tocontinue living a full and happylife with companionship andlove. My deepest sympathy toyou for the loss of your hus-band.

continued from Page 1well-traveled wife of a promi-nent Dayton businessman and amother of three. She lives onBrush Creek Farm, outside ofSinking Springs. She says, “Myhusband found this property in1958, and bought it for $67 anacre.” How the farm becamehers is a critical part of Mary'stale, but the house in the booktitle is actually a cross-stitcheddoll house and it provides anequally critical part of thestory.Always a great reader, Mary

now has the local newspapersread to her. She says, “ I waslistening to a story in theShopper about Elaine Ault writ-ten by Pat Lawrence. Abouthalfway through, I said, 'That'swho I want to write my story!'And it was the right decision.Sometimes I would call her tosay I need to put in something

about this, and she'd answer,'Yes, I already did.' It was likeosmosis. She knew just what Iwas thinking.”Extensive interviews and a

few months work resulted in“The House That Mary Built”.Pat says, “ A lot of living hap-pens over 90 years and thingsgets complicated. Mary wantedto share her life, good parts andbad, in gratitude, in acknowl-edgment and with a real hopethat future generations of herfamily will benefit from whatthey learn from her experiences. It was an honor to be asked toput her story into a book. Mostauthors struggle to find a voice.I simply tried to find Mary’svoice, and let her speak. I thinkpeople who read the book willenjoy meeting her as much as Idid.”"The House That Mary

Built" will be available thisweek at M&W Books inHillsboro and online atAmazon.com.

It’s hard to believe thatwe need to consider our“to do” list for the monthof March! The countdownto spring is on! The stackof catalogs is getting tallerand every day I carry morein from the mailbox. Let’s take a look at my

favorite gardening almanacto see what tasks we needto consider. They include:Begin sowing those seedsthat will need 8 to 10weeks indoors beforetransplanting, Test andtune up gasoline-poweredequipment, Continue prun-ing dormant trees,Continue inspecting house-plants and plants over win-tered indoors for pests anddiseases, Finish pruningfall-bearing raspberries,Prune blueberries, currants, and fruit trees, and at theend of the month, or whenthe earth is “crumbly,” tillthe vegetable garden.March is the month that

begins the display ofspring bulbs. To ensure along and spectacular dis-play next spring, start a listof what bulbs bloom inyour garden this season.Note exactly when eachplant blooms, its locationin the garden, and what

colors are springing up. Inlate summer and fall, whenthe bulb catalogs arrive, look for species and culti-vars that will add colorwhen and where you needit most. I have to admitthat at the end of the sum-mer I am not excited aboutplanting bulbs, but the fol-lowing spring I alwayshave regrets that I didn’tplant more spring bloom-ing bulbs. If you didn’t do preven-

tative maintenance lastautumn, now is the time tocheck all your gasoline-powered equipment.Sharpen the blades, changethe oil, and install cleanfuel and air filters. We usually receive

phone calls at the OSUExtension Office aboutwhether or not to prunespring-blooming shrubs.Wait to do major pruninguntil after they have flow-ered, but cut back longshoots and remove deadwood anytime. To have good-sized

transplants, sow pepperseeds indoors in lateMarch or about 8 weeksbefore the last frost date.Seedlings of most peppersgerminate in about 2 to 3

weeks at temperatures of80 to 85 degrees F. Don’tstart peppers too early, since old leggy transplantsmake weak garden plants.Short, stocky transplantsdo best outdoors. Becausepeppers are heat lovers, they benefit from a sunnylocation, plenty of water, and black plastic mulch topre-warm the soil and keepweeds down. Is yourmouth watering yet? I lovewatching the pepper plantsbloom and then bear fruitthat comes in a rainbow ofcolors. Some other tasks to

consider in the month ofMarch include: Beginweed control as soil andair temperatures warm andseed germinates, turn com-post, top-dress beds withcompost, manure, or fertil-izer, begin fertilizing houseplants, cut back ornamentalgrasses, rake and disposeof winter’s accumulationof leaves and other debris, and before leaves or flow-ers appear, apply dormantspray to fruit trees on a dryday with temperaturesabove freezing. My walk around the

block has revealed manysigns of spring. The skunk

cabbage is up, myHellebores are blooming, the Magic lilies’ foliage ispushing up through theleaves, and I’m sure thatthe next sunny days willencourage the daffodils tobloom.Even my husband has

been getting the gardening“itch.” He ear-marked acouple of pages in a cata-log and asked about thepossibility of growingblueberries. Next week I will share

tips from the book“Gardening for a Lifetime”on making lists that willactually make your garden-ing much more efficientand enjoyable!Mark your calendars for

the three remaining work-shops being presented byOSUE Brown CountyMaster Gardeners at theFincastle campus ofSouthern State College. Allworkshops are free and areheld in the library startingat 6 p.m.: March 15 –Flowers, April 19 –Planting in Containers, andMay 17 – Herbs.

OUT OF THE ROTATIONThere are instances in which apermanent tooth will be rotatedon its axis so that it isn’t alignedproperly with either adjacent oropposing teeth. As a result of itstwisted orientation, the rotatedtooth creates a space on both ofits sides where it shouldotherwise stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the teeth next toit. In cases where the rotation isnot too extreme, the dentist canaugment the rotated tooth withcolor-matching bondingmaterial. This compositerestoration is undertaken in anincremental manner to slowlyfill in gaps and build up thetooth in areas where it isneeded. All the while, care mustbe taken to ensure correct toothdimension and attain thedesired aesthetic result.

Our entire staff at CLARKFAMILY DENTISTRY encour-ages your questions aboutcomprehensive dental care. Wesupply superior oral health carefor the entire family. Foranswers to your oral healthissue questions we invite you tocall our office at 937.393.3494.
