Took these while roaming through the alleys with David over the weekend. I wore

this Inca skirt earlier in the summer during MB Fashion Week Swim and paired it

with a black leotard. I decided to definitely wear it with color this time. I love this

kelly green button-down by Parker. It’s a great color (I have Zara pants in the same

color that I wear on the reg) and I really can’t have too many sheerish button-

downs these days. xx

One way to avoid wearing a bulky winter coat is to layer up and don a warm hat. Writer and food critic Laila Gohar has on a Peruvian alpaca fur, pom-pom hat made by Pitusa. For layers, she starts with a teal thermal over which she adds her boyfriend’s faded denim shirt, a cashmere cardigan and a vintage plaid woolen coat. Laila’s grey skinny jeans with calf leather shins are a co-branded creation by Maison Martin Margiela and Opening Ceremony. Rag & Bone made her perforated, red suede Oxford shoes. Her sunglasses are vintage Persol; her black leather bag is designed by Balenciaga. Laila is an avid online shopper. For vintage items though, she frequents the Brooklyn Flea. When she’s in Cairo, she shops at the grand bazaar, Khan el-Khalili. Copyright 2008 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved This copy is for your personal, non-commercial use only. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week comes to Jeddah!

By MARRIAM MOSSALLI, [email protected]

Published: Sep 7, 2011 17:50 Updated: Sep 7, 2011 17:50

As Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week officially launches its first day of fashion shows and hosts an evening of fashion

icons and celebrities attending “Fashion Night Out,” Saudi fashionistas will no doubt congregate online, checking

Twitter and Facebook accounts to see who went where, and even more importantly, who wore what.

However, just because you’re stuck wearing sun-absorbing black in 38-degree weather doesn’t mean you have to live

vicariously through vogue.com. Thankfully, Staff Sale is here to give us our NYC fashion fix!

Located in Jeddah’s Le Mall on Tahliah Street, the concept of the store is brand new to the Kingdom. Staff Sale is a pop-up,

which means the retail space is only temporary. It involves “popping-up” one day and then closing shortly thereafter. The

idea is as trendy as the clothes the store sells.

Events, such as Staff Sale’s “Vintage Vantage,” and “Arabian Nights,” which included celebrities, such as TV personality

Muna Abusulayman and poetess May Kutbi, were great successes and got Jeddah’s fashionistas together for desperately

needed post-iftar shopping binges.

Sadly, Monday Sept. 12 marks its last event before the store closes. BACK TO STYLE is a unique fashion event that brings

together Jeddah’s fashionistas for an evening of fashion, beauty and hopefully, some juicy gossip! A competition that

invites ladies to use the store’s racks as their very own personal closet, the event marks the departure of a month of

thobes and kaftans! If that wasn’t incentive enough, the person with the best make-over at the end of the night gets to

Page 12: Press commentary featuring PITUSA fashion collection March 11 2012

12

keep what she’s wearing for free! Destination Jeddah is bringing together Jeddah’s fashion-forward youth, as well as a

panel of fashion editors and bloggers to advise customers on new trends, while EVE Haute Couture and Spa’s resident

make-up artist and hair stylist give demos and tips on how to manage this season’s beauty trends — as well as September

hair frizz!

Although initially intended to only be open for the month of August, Staff Sale was asked to prolong its presence in Le Mall

due to the overwhelming pleas from women who while having too much fun in Cannes and London, forgot to stock up on

this fall’s must-haves. Thankfully, the store has said it will be open until Sept. 16, or until their stock runs out.

While the super brands, like Chanel, Dior and Valentino will always be in our hearts, as well as in our high-end malls, the

void in the fashion hierarchy in Saudi Arabia lies in the niche, boutique brands. Fortunately, a group of fashion editors

from Jeddah and NYC decided it was time to fill that void with the designer fashion at discounted prices.

Even with Marni, Moschino and Carolina Herrera present, the real gems of Staff Sale are fairly unfamiliar brands to the

Kingdom. Charlotte Ronson, Rebecca Minkoff, and Brian Reyes are New York heavyweights whose contemporary designs

are seen up and down Manhattan, from a hipster hanging out in SoHo to a weekend warrior in the Meat Packing District.

Further up, in the Upper East Side, you have the looks by Eleanor Waldorf and Jenny Humphrey in the hit show, “Gossip

Girl.” The Waldorf label is actually created by Abigail Lorick of Lorick. The sophisticated brand that aims to bring

“elegance back to our way of living” will be also available for the first time ever in Saudi Arabia. What’s classier than

dressing like the Queen Bee herself?

The buyers of the Staff Sale also searched out celebrity lines with more fervor than the paparazzi on Sunset Strip on a

Saturday night! The work paid off, and for the first time ever, Jeddah will offer Justin Timberlake’s William Rast line, as

well as Lindsay Lohan’s 6125 and Gwen Stefani’s highly successful brand, L.A.M.B.

Now, we finally get to snatch up coveted cocktail dresses by the “Cynthias” (Rowley and Steffe), as well as Thakoon and

Tibi creations to boast just how fashionably cultured we truly are. Alexander Wang, Rick Owens and Jill Sander show us

that minimalism doesn’t mean simplicity, but rather ultra-modern cuts of the most complex proportions. Discounted

evening gowns by Dennis Basso and Vera Wang tempt one to stock up for the numerous weddings we’re obligated to

attend this post-Ramadan season.

With runway veteran Vivienne Tam and TV celebrity favorite Vena Cava abundant (and on sale!) at Staff Sale, Mercedes-

Benz can wait because this fashion editor is jumping into her Cadillac and getting her hands on some real NYC fashion!

Not in Jeddah? Don’t worry; I’m sure I’ll tweet about it!

STARTUP LAB – Ep. 1: Pitusa 112 Commentsby STARTUP LAB on November 2, 2011

INTERVIEW: What is Pitusa? (with Founder of Pitusa, Clara Lago)

What does the company do?

Pitusa is an internationally influenced, eco-friendly, boho-chic brand in the era of globalization,

dedicated to always bringing comfort, quality and originality. [see website: pitusa.co.uk]

What is the backstory to the creation?

Page 14: Press commentary featuring PITUSA fashion collection March 11 2012

14

I found myself craving more comfortable and colorful clothing, so I thought to myself, if no one

else is making it, then why don’t I? In addition to that, I felt there was a real lack of relatively

eco-friendly clothing where the price reflected the value of the product, so with all of these ideas

in mind I decided to fill the void in the market and create Pitusa.

Can you tell us a little more about the products?

Our products draw on all sorts of different inspiration but the consistent themes are comfort,

color and a global appeal. We are constantly reworking the clothes to make them more exciting

than the average brand. I submerged myself into the styles and colors of other cultures that I can

use as influence on the Pitusa line, and what really sets us apart is the color.

Who are the masterminds behind Pitusa?

I [Clara Lago] am the founder of Pitusa and Kevin Ross, a close friend that I met at university, is

my business partner.

What is the company ethos, and what do you promise in terms of environmental or social

good?

The eco-friendly and socially aware aspect of the company is very important to us. We

consistently promise fair trade, a socially conscious brand, fair wages in our production, and a

continuous support of development in global businesses.

Page 15: Press commentary featuring PITUSA fashion collection March 11 2012

15

Are your competition equally eco / socially aware?

I don’t think so for these two reasons:

1) Most brands, especially those bringing the customer decent prices, are producing with little to

no regard toward how their clothing is being produced. We at Pitusa make a concerted effort to

make sure the production of our clothing is in compliance with international health and safety

standards in the work place.

2) Those brands that are eco friendly and socially aware use it as a marketing tool to define the

brand. The fact that we are eco and socially friendly is not something we use to market our

product but rather something we feel strongly about.

Why is this startup important for the world?

Many startups succeed and many fail but it is the trial and error, the daring risk, and the

determination to fulfill a vision that makes the business world an exciting and interesting arena.

Without startups we would not have any of the many innovative things we have today, and we

hope we can contribute!

Are you looking for investment?

Of course! We are always looking to grow and see what opportunities come our way.

Page 16: Press commentary featuring PITUSA fashion collection March 11 2012

16

What does the future hold for Pitusa?

Where do you see the company being in 2, 5, 10 years time? The sky’s the limit as far as we’re

concerned. We’re looking to become bigger, better and more global. We are so new on the

fashion scene (only 7 months) so we are just beyond thrilled to see where we can take this.

The eco-fashion movement is in full effect – written by Charlie Hilton and Sav

Whether you are watching “some country’s next top model”, an episode of Sex and the City, or

The Devil Wears Prada, you associate fashion with luxury, spending, and lavish behaviour. So in

the era of increasing environmental sensitivity, is there a place for sustainable brands? Long has

the fashion industry taken the rap from environmentalists, ranging from their supply-chains to

the fair treatment of animals. However, there is a new dawn: the new wave of eco-fashion

entrepreneurs are having an easy ride.

For good reason too, with responsible and ecologically-sensitive fabric sourcing, green fashion

houses can uplift local industries, benefiting communities and serving as a platform for local

economic growth and social prosperity. Welcome to the eco-fashion era as eco-friendly shows

and designers are springing up like knock-off hand bags in any urban center.

Page 17: Press commentary featuring PITUSA fashion collection March 11 2012

17

The bootstrapped nature that most startups are faced with lends well to the eco-fashion market,

where cost-effective and novel materials can be used. Take Pitusa’s tracksuit pants, for example,

using 100% recycled plastic bottle fabric – a conscious solution, which is more cost effective

than non-recycled materials. This is one of the many reasons that people believe sustainable

fashion is much more than just a passing trend or fad; from the people behind the clothing to

those who buy it, it is very much a philosophy that will only grow stronger.

As we take a closer look at Pitusa, we see that they describe themselves as “boho-chic“. What is

that exactly? Apparently, if you have to ask, you don’t get “it”. Looks like this eco-fashion label

is an snooty as the traditionalists. Au contraire mon in-vogue frere: Pitusa’s attitude is down-to-

earth. They make clothes based on different sets of inspiration while maintaining the consistent

themes of comfort, color and a global appeal. As mentioned in the interview: “we are constantly

reworking the clothes to make them more exciting than the average brand. I submerged myself

into the styles and colors of other cultures that I can use as influence on the Pitusa line, and what

really sets us apart is the color.”

As a start-up, is Pitusa afraid of failing? Not at all. This is exactly where success and innovation

are raised: through experimentation and taking risks – both great ingredients for any good start-

up. Having this enthusiasm is normal for such a young company. Eventually, investment from

true believers in the eco-fashion movement will be needed. One thing remains true, no matter

what business: it takes money to make money.

One unavoidable road block will be the competitive landscape of fashion itself. Brands compete

on high-end image on the marketing side and low-end operations on the production side.

Therefore, Pitusa’s commitment to their values (like promising fair trade, a socially conscious

brand, and paying decent wages) basically goes against clothing industry 101 textbooks.

However, Pitusa might have an advantage in the form of their beliefs: being sustainable and

doing the right thing is part of their ethos – not just a fad.

Nevertheless, the real challenge will be changing the perception of the fashion world and the

buyers. Since the hippie days of the 1960′s, “environmental” meant going from riches to rags –

not what designers want to sell. So what will it take for eco to become chic? Given the

unpredictable and fickle nature of fashionistas, no one knows for sure – but having more

designers like Pitusa out there can only make sustainable fashion “so this season!”

Pitusa

August 15th, 2011 § 18 comments

A couple weeks ago I got the opportunity to view pieces from Pitusa, a collection of middle

eastern inspired pieces that range from an modern take on the abaya to fringed cotton t’s. Clara

Lago, the founder, was sporting one of their Inca Abaya’s when we talked. Clara felt like there

was a lack of color in the market, which is the reason why neon pinks, greens and yellow’s are

blatant in every piece. The material used is only the best quality and eco-friendly fabrics sourced

from Peru, Pima Cotton. Pima Cotton is the world’s finest cotton and Pitusa also works with a

unique fabric that blends Alpaca (15%) and Pima Cotton (85%). Pitusa is about making products

that are sustainable, eco-friendly and respect fair trade. Pitusa likes to keep synthetic materials to

a bare minimum. One of their pieces, the track pants, are literally made from 20 recycled plastic

bottles. They revolve around being green and natural, which goes along with the “peace” aura

found throughout the collection.

I feel like a tall person like me would have a hard time wearing their Abaya, and look much more

attractive on a person like Clara who sported it perfectly. It feels comfortable beyond

comparison, and I would wear it around the house like I wear a lot of my favorite dresses. But it

belongs on the petite, tiny body type that I very much do not have. Maybe I’ll get myself one of

the Alpaca hats

Eco Moda, con las mejores intenciones

by Silvina Dibar on January 24, 2012

Ibiza style setter: What Maya wears – Neon and on and on and on Written by Maya Claughton on September 1, 2011

My boyfriend James does NOT mind buying me presents. You could definitely

say he’s a keen shopper (for me). I barely have to blink and he’s there with gifts. Good

gifts. Ones in nice tissue paper. I’ve never had a boyfriend who could choose

Page 29: Press commentary featuring PITUSA fashion collection March 11 2012

29

clothes for a girl like he can (we’ll pretend the size zero leather trouser fiasco never

happened). It’s truly amazing.

Last week he came home with what can only be described as the world’s most

AMAZING kaftan (or Moo-Moo, as my American friend Matt calls it). It’s neon coral

pink (my fave colour), it’s cotton jersey (soooo soft!) and it has an awesome neon yellow

braided strip down the front (so, like, ethnic).

It has filled a gap in my wardrobe that I didn’t know existed – I can’t take it off

and I really don’t want to. My friend Amanda actually has the same one and we love

them so much we both wore them to the same party last week (See? Obsessed).

Obviously a kaftan like this needs a bag to match and whilst I was blithely

showering at Tropicana Beach at the weekend, James was up to his old tricks… I

returned to see a wonderful paper bag of goodies nestled on my lounger – and

inside? This absolute shazz-o-rama of a beach bag. It’s a basket, yes; with leather

handles, yes; but it’s absolutely COVERED in the teensiest tiniest multi-coloured

sequins – it’s ridiculous! And his reason for buying it? A smattering of the sequins are

the same neon coral pink as my kaftan. Now that is faultless accessorising..

Page 30: Press commentary featuring PITUSA fashion collection March 11 2012

30

The adorable little Indian leather flats are a seasonal fave – George Scarbrough

and I buy them religiously each summer from Ganesha in the port and wear them until

the soles wear through… Oddly enough, the only reason I ever happened upon these in

the first place was that, when I used to work for Erick Morillo, I once had to put

together a costume for him for a fancy dress party to which he was going as an

Indian. In hindsight, it should have been obvious that he meant a Red Indian. Needless

to say, he didn’t wear the costume.

Just another steaming hot night in Miami… deciding what to wear. Back in December there was a

Herve Leger dress I died over that was gradient shades of gray with neon yellow… that dress was

the inspiration for this look. From breezy rooftops to strolling along the bay, this outfit was not only

comfortable but it kept me cool in what was probably a 99% humidity level. These wedges are

probably the most comfortable heels I own. Five inch heel aside, they make me feel like I’m walking

on air.

Pitusa Thick White Alpaca Fur Hat

Page 41: Press commentary featuring PITUSA fashion collection March 11 2012

41

This fun and deliciously warm Pitusa hat comes from the mountains of Peru and is

made of 100 percent fluffy white Alpaca Fur. To make it even more luscious, a

flash of color shows in the pom-pom cords.

This hat is made of real fur, but the animal was not harmed for the production of

this hat; it is illegal in Peru to kill Alpacas for their fur.

The color choice is fuchsia (the redish purple that is pictured) or plum purple (a

bluer purple) yarn for the pom poms.

Shipped by Pitusa.

This hat was recently talked about in the Wall Street Journal and the NY Examiner.

PITUSA by Clara Lago

Escribe, Esther Oblitas para creartesanoperu, Lima 19 de Diciembre del

2010

Food Republic – I met Laila Gohar, a food writer and avid online

shopping enthusiast, in Washington Square Park. She was bundled in

layer upon layer on an especially chilly Sunday.

Underneath, she’s even hiding a Margiela sweater and Elizabeth and

James knickers and is carrying a Prada bag.

Laila writes a textured array of food posts for Food Republic, including

Top 5 Food Porn Specialists, a convenient guide to 5 DIY Food and

Drink Gifts and a love story about a porchetta sandwich. She was also

just picked up by Huffington Post for her take on 20 Exotic McDonald’s

Sandwiches.

Laila has an incredible eye, with a penchant for finding interesting

designers around the world. She shares her 5 Favorite Online Global

Shopping Destinations below. Fair warning: you might not leave your

house.

world!

www.thekooples.com (One of my favorite labels for the past three years

now. I was in Paris in 2009 taking pastry and macaron classes at Le

Notre and discovered it back when no one knew about it, now it’s

become huge. They have such a cool aesthetic and concept, you can read

about them on the site. They are basically inspired by cool, everyday

couples.)

www.shakuhachi.net (An awesome Australian designer with really soft,

delicate dresses.)

opening a store in NYC soon — I couldn’t be more excited!)

Rajasthan offers passionate adventures in the heartland of India

If you're after a romantic adventure for two, there's nowhere better than the

Indian state of Rajasthan on the northwest coast. Get ready to fall in love. Related Tags:

The Udai Kothi is an affordable boutique hotel with a twinkly rooftop pool

All great romantic adventures should start in a bar and why should yours be any different? The

1911 bar at The Imperial New Delhi is the stuff of legend – Lord Mountbatten drank negronis

here while discussing partition with Gandhi. You should drink the same as you plan a romantic

adventure for two through India’s heartland, Rajasthan. The Imperial is the perfect jump-off. The

building is a masterpiece of colonial splendour – its spa is languid and Missoni-esque while the

outdoor pool is shaded and discreet. Service is faultless. You’ll want to smooch at every corner

(don’t – it’s not a good look).

Delhi is beautiful, misty and dripping in history – spend a rose-tinted afternoon exploring the

mausoleum of Humayun, a monument to love so beautiful rumour is his widow ordered the

architect killed upon completion to avoid a replica. The adventure proper starts here – leave the

city on a slow train to the wilderness with your beloved (from £5pp). If you’re lucky, he’ll carry

Page 71: Press commentary featuring PITUSA fashion collection March 11 2012

71

your bags. If he’s lucky, you’ll have booked smartly and be greeted at the station by a ranger

proffering blankets and hot water bottles, ready to whisk you 10km into the starlit desert in an

open-top jeep.

Welcome to Sher Bagh, a tented camp so romantic that it was the venue for the ill-fated Katy

Perry and Russell Brand wedding ceremony (let this not be a bad omen for love, please). Expect

champagne and hot towels on arrival and a torchlit procession to light the way to your tent.

Vintage Kipling books and a brass butler bell on the bedtable suggest that Eurocamp this is not.

You’ll want to stay put – the candlelit bathroom with sunken stone shower and ayurvedic oils

exerts a heady pull. But dinner a deux in the desert awaits, involving a vast campfire, cashmere

blankets, lashings of red wine and the undivided attention of handsome chaps in the type of

colonial garb that you’d wear if you weren’t afraid of looking like a bit of a berk.

Maya enjoyed a hot stone massage in the spa suite at Leela Palace

Wake with the larks for sunrise game drives through Ranthambore National Park (from £40pp).

This is your best chance of spotting a tiger in the wild. When the city calls again, it is onwards to

Udaipur – the Venice of India and home to the legendary ‘floating’ palace, built in 1743 as a

prince’s retreat for moonlit picnics with ladies (and, later, the lair of 007’s Octopussy). Today the

palace is the Taj Lake Palace hotel where suites are grand but pricey (from £487 per night).

Loved-up young things may opt to stay at the more affordable boutique hotel Udai Kothi (£72

per night), with its twinkly rooftop pool. You could always pop next door to the Leela Palace for

a royal hot stone massage in his ’n’ hers tents and afterwards you and your chérie amour can

while away the day in your own lakeside suite. A secluded swimming pool for two at sunset?

Sexy as hell. If spas aren’t your thing and you’re after a real buzz, go to Udaipur in March for the

Mewar Festival (March 25-27) – a hedonistic hello to all things spring and a truly mesmerising

sight, as local women carry devotional statues deep into Lake Pichola.

Page 72: Press commentary featuring PITUSA fashion collection March 11 2012

72

When the fireworks prove too much, retreat to sandstone hilltop fortress Devi Garh. It has views

to die for and the most picturesque pool in India. Gazing out over the misty hills from your petal-

filled tub for two, you could be in Provence – sip a chilli and cumin-infused cocktail to remind

you that you’re not.

For some serious alone-time, head to the desert. The sun fortress of Mihir Garh, a favourite of

Madonna, stands proud on the edges of the Great Thar Desert. Ride sleek Marwari horses into

the dusty lands (from £20) for a private picnic – ideally he’ll wear a denim shirt and chinos and

your hair will get messed up.

Then, in need of some city-slicking and a good wine list, head to polo capital Jodhpur. Nestled in

the shadow of the pink-hued Mehrangarh Fort, Raas is a boutique hotel for the Europhile in you.

With a similar aesthetic to that other great empire, the Soho House Group, Raas feels

wondrously familiar. Luxe bathrooms and a formidable DVD menu mean that even dragging

yourself outside to your garden for yoga (private class from £8) can feel like an effort. It’s worth

it, though. Afterwards, climb the steep path to the fort and get all Tarzan and Jane as you whizz

through the sunset sky 600m over a lake on The Flying Fox zipline (www.flyingfox.asia, from

£10pp), which links the fort’s highest points. It’s scary enough that he’ll need to catch you in his

arms tightly at the end, but that’s surely what this whole trip was about?

Maya Claughton flew to Delhi with British Airways (www.ba.com). Return flights start from

£600. Internal flights from Udaipur to Jodhpur with Air India start at £32 one way. She stayed at

The Imperial (www.theimperialindia.com, from £225); Sher Bagh (www.sherbagh.com, from

£350); Leela Palace (www.theleela.com, from £32); Devi Garh Fort Palace (www.deviresorts.in,

from £200); Mihir Garh (www.mihirgarh.com, from £186); and Raas hotel

(www.raasjodhpur.com, from £150)

GOLD PLATE DREAMS 18th Apr 2011

I Stand For Peace, Do You? Saturday night Daniela and I went to preview Pitusa’s Summer 2011

collection at Fusee Studios. The collection, made in Peru and designed by

UK native Clara Lago, is full of spunk and vibrant colors. I met Clara a few months ago as we both took part in Launch Arte Miami selling our clothes!

She is an absolute doll - with a lot of creativity and personality. Her pieces are heavily inspired from the Peruvian culture. When I asked what her inspiration for the summer line was - she said she just went and

chose the colors and the fabrics she loved and later put together the designs. I love the loose, free flowing pieces - including tanks, long dresses

and sweatpants. http://pitusa.co.uk/home.html

to check out her website Daniela wore a one of a kind Furor Moda vintage dress. I wore my favorite

green leather shorts, new black blouse from Sears, Charlotte Russe Pumps and Zara bag.

Top - Sears, yes Sears. Shorts - Vintage

Bag - Zara Shoes - Charlotte Russe

from PERU with PEACE Once upon a time, a young London born half Spanish woman, living in Miami set

about to make her own socially conscious clothing line. With pieces made in

Peru from the softest eco-friendly jersey and alpaca in mouth watering neon

colours, the clothes provide a message of piece in the Middle East. The

designer Clara Lago, grew up in London went to University in Miami and spent

time in Peru and it is clear to see the influence of all these places in her

clothing line; Pitusa, which prides itself on being colourful and

comfortable.

76

Clara, the designer of Pitusa, wearing one of her Inca Mini Skirts

The garments are so readily wearable but still feel special largely thanks to

the colourful Peruvian brocade which adorns certain pieces. One of Pitusa's

best selling items is the aptly named Inca Abaya, which as the name indicates

fuses Peruvian and Middle Eastern style influences. The message of the

clothing is peace and certain items are embroidered with the words Salaam

Shalom, in Hebrew and Arabic - indicating peace. $1 of every purchase goes to

a charity promoting peace in the Middle East.

success. Pitusa is only in its infancy but is already being stocked in

boutiques in Miami, Ibiza and Mexico. Shop for Pitusa here

Inca Mini Skirt...

Inca Mini Skirt, Pitusa

Every time I would visit my family in Colombia I would come back with tons of handmade jewelry and clothes. I

guess I've always been drawn to the uniqueness of anything that is handmade and knowing that nobody else

would have something like it when I got back to "the states." That's why when I received this Inca mini skirt

from Pitusa, I immediately feel in love with the fabric and story behind it. They're handmade from Peruvian

"mantillas" which are used by Peruvian women to carry their babies in the mountains of Peru. The fabric is also

eco-friendly and made from recycled bottles. Pretty cool huh?
