Uníimmagine, questa, che richiama le innumerevoli reti da cui siamo circondati, ̌siche o intangibili che siano.A partire dalla complessa struttura del nostro cervello: uníimmensa e inestricabile rete di sinapsi che interconnettono un numero astronomico di cellule nervose e che, unite ed espresse attraverso la rete delle relazioni, dello scambio di informazioni, dello studio e della ricerca danno forma alla preziosa rete della conoscenza.E proprio per mezzo dellíaffascinante organo intellettivo, cosÏ articolato e dotato della straordinaria capacit‡ di pensare ed elaborare, líuomo Ë stato in grado di esplorare il globo terrestre, di rappresentare la realt‡, descrivendola attraverso i segni e la scrittura, ed esprimendola con il linguaggio, di creare una cultura condivisa e trasmettere il sapere alle generazioni successive, di sperimentare, scoprire e relazionarsi. Il sistema di trasferimento delle conoscenze e delle risorse Ë stato perfezionato tramite reti af ̌dabili, cambiando progressivamente lo scenario mondiale. Dal tam-tam africano, che aveva come scopo la trasmissione di notizie urgenti e telegra ̌che, allíodierna diffusione díinformazioni e risorse in tempo reale, il rapporto tra i singoli e milioni di altri individui, cosÏ come quello tra gli individui e líambiente che li circonda, Ë stato radicalmente trasformato.Le nuove tecnologie e la ricerca offrono uno strumento di sviluppo nel quale gli utenti stessi della rete possono intervenire, agendo localmente e perseguendo, al contempo, ̌nalit‡ globali. Con il loro ausilio, si intravede la possibilit‡ di costruire ñ in un processo che lega armoniosamente lo sfruttamento delle fonti disponibili, la direzione degli investimenti, líorientamento dello sviluppo tecnologico e il cambiamento istituzionale ñ un ef ̌ciente modello di rete, al ̌ne di migliorare, in maniera sostenibile, il soddisfacimento dei bisogni dellíumanit‡.E tra i bisogni dellíumanit‡, le reti di cooperazione solidale, sorrette da uníetica della responsabilit‡ sociale, rappresentano il passo ulteriore da compiere per il raggiungimento del vero sviluppo umano, quello che si svincola da tutte le illibert‡.

Rita Levi-Montalcini

Rita Levi-Montalcini nasce il 22 aprile 1909 a Torino. Dopo la laurea in Medicina, su invito del

professor Viktor Hamburger, nel 1947, si reca, per proseguire le sue ricerche, alla Washington

University a St. Louis, Missouri. Nel 1952, a Rio de Janeiro, identifi ca il Nerve Growth Factor (NGF).

Scoperta che le varrà, nel 1986, il premio Nobel per la Medicina. Membro delle più prestigiose

Accademie scientifi che, nel 2001 riceve la nomina a Senatore a vita. Ha costituito nel 1992 la

Fondazione Rita Levi-Montalcini Onlus, che ha come scopo l’istruzione delle giovani africane, e nel

2005 l’European Brain Research Institute (EBRI).

Fin da quando il suo cuore e il suo sguardo si sono riempiti di meraviglia per le prime scoperte, líuomo ha voluto descrivere e interpretare il mondo. E una volta compreso che la realt‡ Ë ̌ltrata dal pensiero e che puÚ essere descritta e tramandata dai segni e dal linguaggio, ogni con ̌ne Ë stato superato: líessere umano ha iniziato a relazionarsi con líaltro, a comunicare, letteralmente a ìmettere in comuneî. A realizzare e controllare, cioË, una rete della conoscenza tesa a modellare uno spazio dinamico, sempre pi˘ volto allo scambio díinformazioni in tempo reale e a una migliore qualit‡ della vita. Ed Ë proprio questa la s ̌da che ABB ha saputo cogliere, facendo della conoscenza, dellíinnovazione tecnologica, dellíesperienza le chiavi del proprio agire: gestire reti complesse, sempre pi˘ intelligenti, veloci, af ̌dabili e sostenibili, che raggiungano in modo ̌essibile ed ef ̌ciente le persone e le metropoli del futuro.

True understanding comes from seeing a picture as a whole. Just as a mosaic is better appreciated from a distance rather than studying the tiles one by one, we cannot see the worth of an entire network by analyzing it one byte at a time. Images like this remind us of the countless networks, both immediate and intangible, that surround us. Consider the intricate structure of the human brain: a labyrinthine network of synapses linking an astronomical number of neurons. Joined and expressed through a network, they create an exchange of information that ñ through study and research ñ culminates in an invaluable store of knowledge.This complex, intellectual organ, endowed with the extraordinary capacity to conceptualize and project, allows human beings to explore the earth, to represent reality, to describe it through symbols and written language, to interpret it with speech, to create a shared culture and transmit knowledge to future generations, enabling them to experiment, discover new concepts and relate them to one another.Knowledge and resources have been transferred by reliable networks over centuries, gradually changing the course of human history. From African drums that telegraphed urgent news in coded rhythms to present-day cell phone, satellites and resource distribution networks;�the relationship between individuals and millions of other people and the�environment surrounding them has been radically transformed.New research and technologies provide avenues where network users can intervene, acting locally while pursuing global aims. With their help, we envision new ways to build ñ in harmony with natureís resources, with the direction of investments, the orientation of technological development and institutional change ñ an efficient network model that sustainably improves the human condition.Among humanityís needs, cooperative networks based on solidarity and upheld by an ethic of social�responsibility represent a further step toward achievement of true human development and greater freedom for all people.

Rita Levi-Montalcini

Rita Levi-Montalcini was born on April 22, 1909 in Turin, Italy. After earning a medical degree, she

received an invitation from Professor Viktor Hamburger in 1947 to conduct research at Washington

University in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1952, in Rio de Janeiro, she identifi ed the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF),
