THE NEW CCM RBZ features key innovations that will truly classify this stick in a category of its own. Better weight distribution produces a faster swing for faster puck speed and the constant stiffness profile all the way through the shaft creates a customized kick point for maximum shot loading. The revolutionary SpeedBlade Technology provides a hot blade face which helps to rocket the puck off the blade.

Q: WHERES THE BEEF ?
A:
NEW
HERES THE BEEF .Weve gone back to the grill to make our classic cheeseburgers thicker, hotter and juicier than ever. Theyre 100% North American beef. And, weve added new premium toppings and a buttered, toasted bun. The way it should be.

Hockey Night In Boston wel-
comes you to our 38th annual
Summer Tournament being held
again this year at the Valley
Forum, a beautiful two-rink facility in
Haverhill, MA (25 miles north of Boston).
Action in the 20-team Summer
Showcase begins on Friday, July 27th with
a unique jamboree-style format sure to
please the scouts in attendance. Twenty
teams will each play 6 games against 6 dif-
ferent opponents over a four-day period.
College and NHL Scouts will be able to
see prospects play two times each day on
Saturday and Sunday against different
opponents.
Four select teams of Massachusetts
/RI top players Greater Boston,
South Shore/RI, North Shore,
Middlesex/Merrimack _ were chosen
in April/May. Players were invited by
the HNIB staff based upon their previous
winters scholastic hockey season.
The 29th annual New York-
Connecticut-Mid-Atlantic camp featuring
close to 100 players took place from June
15-17. The players competed for spots on
two teams in the Northeast Division: Mid
Atlantic and Connecticut/NY.
HNIB Mid-West Director John Malloy
conducted the 23rd annual camp in Ann
Arbor, MI (June 22-24) to select two
teams for this showcase. The Great
Lakes and Midwest teams will feature
players from many Midwestern states
(Over 125 attended).
Over 90 skaters signed up for the 28th
annual Northern New England camp in
Haverhill, MA from June 8th10th. The
result was two select teams, Northern
New England and Northeast, that repre-
sent players from Maine, Vermont, and
New Hampshire.
Early in July, 50 players were drafted
from the HNIB High School Division try-
outs for participation in the major show-
case (from a turnout of 125 partcipants),
including a Suburban entry.
Sixteen teams of sophomores (over
300 players) competed in the gigantic
and unique HNIB Sophomore All-Star
Tournament from July 1521. Also,
240 junior high players participated
in their own festival as a stepping
stone to their initial exposure at
HNIB. The final 40 Sophomore All
Stars were chosen after their All-
Star Games on July 20th.
Returning at HNIB this summer
are two major teams representing
South Florida (Tim Kyrkostas), and
the Philadelphia area (Charlie Pens).
Welcome back!
And, who could forget TeamONE,
under the guidance of former HNIB
participant Ray Jacques, back for
year three after winning the HNIB
Summer Showcase title last winter.
Four new major entries this sum-
mer are Central/West, put together
by Springfield Cathedral (MA)
coach Brian Foley, the Mass Attack,
recruited by Chris Nagy, who also
fielded an entry in the Sophomore
Tournament, Frank Goldens Metro
squad, and East Coast, headed by
Glenn White.

THEGREATERBOSTONDUOof Malden Catholics Mike Iovanna (l) andNorthwoods TommyEvangelista (r) along the Charles River.
ByKevinDoyleHNIB
The numbers -- 23 goals, 43 points -- suggest a relatively
smooth transition. While he enjoyed great success in his
first year at Northwood, the shift from Massachusetts
Division I Central Catholic to the prep school ranks demanded
much of Methuen's Tommy Evangelista. By the time Christmas
break rolled around, Northwood already had the equivalent of
a full Massachusetts high school schedule under its skates.
"The toughest transition for me was the speed of the game
itself. It was tremendously faster than it was at Central
Catholic. Fortunately, I had great coaches to help me transition
the right way," said Evangelista. "When I first saw the schedule
and saw that my first
game was in the first
week of October, I
thought that by March I
would not be able to
move. To my surprise, the
on-ice and off-ice training
allowed us to be playing
our best hockey in late
March. The trips to
Minnesota, Canada and
all over New England
were tough, but the sea-
son seemed to fly by."
While Evangelista
negotiated his way
through Northwood's
hybrid schedule of prep
schools and Junior A
teams, he kept his eye on
his former teammates at
Central Catholic as they
advanced to the semifinal
round of the
Massachusetts Division 1A Tournament.
"I was extremely excited for my old team to make it as far as
they did. It was great to see my friends and the coaches get the
privilege to make Central Catholic hockey history," he said.
Evangelista, back for his third summer with the Greater
Boston entry, says he reaped immense benefits from the hock-
ey culture that permeates Northwood. A stocky five feet, eight
inches, he is a quick study with the speed to leave opponents
spinning their wheels in futile pursuit.
"I got to live in the best hockey environment possible. The
deans, the teachers and almost all of the students play hockey
and live hockey. This made me a better player because of the
advice I would pick up daily. Another important thing I learned
was how to be the best team player I could be. Finally, I learned
how to play a team defense and my defensive game improved
greatly," he said. "Whenever new things are thrown at me I can
adjust really well. When I am told to do or change something,
I do it in order to improve my game. I finally have learned how
to use my size as an advantage."
Evangelista has spent the summer building his strength train-
ing at Mike Boyle's, enhancing his skating at Paul Vincent's and
working with a private shooting coach.
Greater Boston captured its sixth Summer Showcase title in
2010 and hasn't lost a game in the round-robin portion of the
tournament in the past
two summers, rattling
off 14 consecutive wins
in that time.
Evangelista thinks this
club has the make-up to
challenge for a seventh
crown and will be
joined by a number of
familiar returning faces
such as Mike Iovanna
and Colin McGillivray.
"The Greater Boston
team always has high
quality players that
seem to gel together
very well. I think we
have a great chance of
winning an HNIB
championship," he
assessed.
Though not closed to
the idea of playing a
year of Juniors follow-
ing his graduation, Evangelista is hopeful he will be prepared to
head directly to college for the 2013-14 academic year because
of the strength of Northwood's schedule. He plans to study
either Business or Communications but has not committed to
any school.
"We play most EJHL and AJHL teams and have done very
well against them in the past. I would do whatever means are
necessary to play at a high college level. Right now my focus
is on my upcoming season at Northwood and then I will go
from there. My hope is that a team that expresses great interest
in me will be somewhere that I would love to play hockey," he
concluded.

Mike Iovanna was the right guy in the right spot when he buried the
winning goal from close range against B.C. High in March's
Massachusetts Division 1A championship game, securing Malden
Catholic's second consecutive title. Now the UMass-bound senior forward,
who has 35 goals and 86 points over the past two seasons, will be front and
center as the Lancers attempt to become the first school other than Catholic
Memorial to win the tournament three years in a row.
It will be a different looking Lancers' squad this winter with the departure
of a handful of core players gone either via graduation or decisions to move
on to the prep and Junior ranks. As a captain, Iovanna is committed to keep-
ing the Lancers ahead of the pack.
"We have won two titles back to back and, as always, the goal is to do it
again. I will take my responsibilities very seriously. My job as captain is to
keep everyone level headed and giving it their best. I work hard every shift
and I can assure that everyone will follow my example," said Iovanna, who
hails from Middleton. "I believe that although we have lost some players there

are others chomping at the bit to play and help us win games. We will still
be very fast, tough, and skilled with many players who can and will con-
tribute as a TEAM."
Iovanna called his decision to attend UMass "a good fit" and said former
Coach Don "Toot" Cahoon and his staff initially showed interest in Iovanna
as a freshman at MC. He made an unofficial visit with former MC Coach
Chris Serino during his sophomore year and was immediately sold.
"I knew upon seeing the campus as well as the hockey facilities that this
was the place I wanted to attend. I love the large ice surface and I believe
my game will benefit from that size arena. I sincerely wake up every morn-
ing wanting to play for UMass-Amherst. I think they love my passion and
desire to be a Minuteman," said Iovanna.
Iovanna has known coach Serino since his days as head coach at
Merrimack College and Iovanna was skating for the '94 Islanders.
"I was about five or six years old. We would practice after his team and
one day I was real early and he saw me standing with my equipment on and
ordered me to come on the ice. I looked forward to that 15 minutes of ice
with them every week. He always said
'you're gonna' play for me some day.' When
he took the MC job I was probably in the
seventh grade and knew then I would be a
Lancer. He has always done everything he
said he would do. He's a remarkable person,
coach and mentor," said Iovanna.
Which made the news that Serino had
suffered a relapse of throat cancer and
would be unable to coach last season all the
more difficult to accept.
"Coach Serino's illness took us all by sur-
prise and was devastating news. Although
he wasn't there every day he was still a
huge part of our success and his presence
was felt. We all have the highest respect for
him; we prayed as a team and continued to
work hard in his absence. The entire coach-
ing staff was remarkable in continuing his
hockey philosophies and systems," Iovanna
said.
An HNIB veteran, Iovanna makes his
second appearance on the Greater Boston
club. He is familiar with a number of the
players on this year's team either personal-
ly or by reputation and expects GB to com-
pete hard, have fun and continue its recent
run of success at this tournament.
Committed to constantly improving
every facet of his game, Iovanna displays
quick feet, soft hands, a quick release and
advanced hockey IQ. He skates with Paul
Vincent and has worked with Athletic
Evolution trainer Rick Bianco for five
years.

Ultimately, the opportunity to play a beefier schedule for the reigning cham-
pions of what is regarded as the premier Junior league in the Eastern
United States outweighed the chance to compete for a third consecutive
Massachusetts Division 1A State Championship.
While he remains at Malden Catholic to complete his studies and graduate with
his class, defenseman Colin MacGillivray of Peabody (MA) will lace em up for
the Eastern Junior Hockey League champion Jr. Monarchs this winter under new
coach Ryan Frew.
Colin McGillivray Greater Boston
It was not an easy decision, not playing at
MC and forfeiting a chance at a third Super
Eight title. But, at the end of the day, the
Monarchs are a great team with a rich tradition
and they play in the best Junior league in the
Eastern corridor. I was fortunate enough to
crack the lineup and decided to play for Coach
Frew, MacGillivray explained.
While he looks forward to new challenges,
the MC experience will stick with
MacGillivray for a lifetime, especially the
Lancers repeat performance this past winter.
They were determined to go back-to-back as a
tribute to coach Chris Serino, who continues
to battle cancer.
MC has been a blast great teammates,
coaching and a great student body to support
you, MacGillivray said. The Super Eight
tournament is tough and winning back-to-
back was very special. Ill never forget it,
especially with all the emotion surrounding
the team and what was really at stake, winning
it for Coach Serino.
The moment we found out it was devastat-
ing, hard to believe no one wanted to believe
he wasnt going to coach. Our coaches did an
amazing job keeping us focused and the cap-
tains, Brendan (Collier) and Ryan (Fitzgerald)
always reminded us why we were playing it
was pretty remarkable and special, he added.
Coach Serino is a great hockey coach. Coach
taught me to be a better person, a better stu-
dent and a better hockey player. He has shown
me what real courage is and what it means not
to give up.

Cushing Academy's Shane Kavanagh is a bit
of a throwback, a power forward equally
capable of winning battles on the wall and
scoring goals from the so-called dirty areas.
Kavanagh headed to Cushing as a repeat sopho-
more last year after racking up impressive numbers
at Bishop Hendricken in Rhode Island.
"Academically and athletically it was quite a
jump from my old school. After talking to my par-
ents and (Cushing) Coach (Rob) Gagnon we
thought it would be in my best interest to attend
Cushing. The schoolwork was more challenging
and the hockey was much better. I look forward to
this year," said Kavanagh, who accumulated 15
goals and 32 points in his debut campaign as a
sophomore with the Penguins, who finished 19-10-
3 and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the
elite Stuart/Corkery Tournament.

Ive been working out and making getting to the gym a priority. Im
skating skills sessions to get ready for HNIB, he said. I think we will be
very competitive. We have a good team, but Im sure all the teams are
good (and) Im expecting close games.
He knows the transition to the EJHL will be demanding.
The Catholic Conference is a very good league; the EJHL is going to
be a bump up (with) more games, more travel, playing with and against
kids that have college commitments and kids trying to get their deal done.
Im putting a lot of focus on making sure Im in the best shape possible to
be able to perform at a high level all season. No doubt its going to be a
tougher schedule, he said.
Depending on his development, MacGillivray is prepared for a two-
year hitch in the EJHL, if necessary, and is hopeful of catching the eye of
a Hockey East school.
Hockey East is a great league to play in. I had a really nice visit at
UConn but havent gone on many visits. Its important to go to a school
where its a good fit and where you will play, he said.
New Challenges Lie Ahead For MacGillivray

Kavanagh said his overall game improved greatly
under the watchful eyes of the Cushing staff. He
scored at least a single point in six of Cushing's final
seven games heading into the playoffs and skated on
the Penguins' lethal top line with team scoring leader
Garrett Hehir and UNH-bound Shane Eiserman.
"My game has improved tremendously after a year
with coach Gagnon and his staff -- they are constant-
ly pushing you to get better both on and off the ice,"
he said.
Kavanagh's favorite NHL player is Anze Kopitar
"because I love the way he plays the game and how
can maneuver his way out of every little position."
At 5-11, 185 pounds, Kavanagh is a self-described
"hard-working power forward," who cites the need to
improve his speed as the area he needs to work on
most. To that end, he has faithfully adhered to a per-
sonalized workout plan given by coach Gagnon to
every Cushing player based on the program's own
testing results.
Kavanagh returns to the South Shore/Rhode Island
squad coached by Gagnon this summer and is hope-
ful of improving on last year's 4-3-0 round-robin
record.
"I feel as though this will be a solid team with good
goalies. I hope to impress some Division 1 college
coaches as well as make some friends," he
said.Kavanagh is hopeful of advancing directly to the
college ranks upon graduation from Cushing but will
take an extra year of Juniors if needed. He plans to
study Sports Medicine or Nutrition.
"I feel I will be ready to go right to college after my
next two years at Cushing. In memory of my Pa I
would love to play college hockey at BC, Providence
College, BU or Northeastern," he said.

MacGillivray returns to the Greater Boston squad
this summer, one of the core veterans on a club that
has enjoyed immense success each of the past two
years. Rangy and physical, hes a commanding pres-
ence in all three zones. Improving his puck skills and
decision-making are at the top of his priority list.

Looks For Big Summer
Ace Netminder Steve Thulin
ByDomNicastroHNIB
Stephen Thulin is serious about hock-
ey and his progression as a goal-
tender. He is so serious, in fact, last
year he attended the American Hockey
Institute, the Waterville Valley, N.H., pro-
gram where players live in a campus-envi-
ronment and practice hockey four hours a
day along with gaining academic skills.
I really enjoyed my season in
Waterville Valley, N.H., Thulin said. It
was a great experience having the ability to
live on my own with some teammates. I
think it really helped me mature and
become more independent. The four hours
of practice a day helped me develop into a
better hockey player and the school aspect
was great. I think my reading and writing
skills improved.
Last summer, Thulin put on his own
clinic of hockey in the Hockey Night in
Boston Major Showcase. The North
Reading, Mass., native won the Top
Goaltender award for his stellar play in
between the pipes. His efforts helped lead
TeamONE New England to the showcase
championship.
I am proud to have received the award,
but for me, team awards are the most
important, said Thulin, 19. Last summer,
my team won HNIB. It was an experience
I will always remember. My coaches Ray
Jacques and Ray Jacques Sr. have invited
me to play on their summer team for many
years. They are two great coaches.

O N THE COVERTHIS SUMMER
Page 49
(Continued From Page 48)
Though hell only have to make a
short commute from North Reading to
play in HNIB this summer, Thulin has
traveled far and wide for his hockey
career, most notably a trip to Quebec
City recently.
I had strep throat and had to drive up
with my father when I was feeling well
enough, Thulin said. There was no
way I was going to miss playing in a
tournament, especially our last tourna-
ment of the season. It was pretty special
playing in a rink that was like an old time
Canadian barn.
Prior to his campaign with the New
England Wolves, the team that repre-
sents the American Hockey Institute,
Thulin played a year for the Salem Ice
Dogs of the Empire League. He played
about a 50-game schedule against teams
from around New England and New
York and called it a great experience.
His game has improved in skating and
becoming what he calls headstrong.
I had to manage my time in order to
keep up with my academics, he added
about his time with the Ice Dogs. I have
no doubt that the experience will help
when I play college hockey. I am contin-
uing to work on playing the puck more
often. I am planning on spending extra
time on that part of my game this sum-
mer.
Thulin has been spending most of his
summer days at the rink. He adds in yoga
on Tuesdays and Thursday and watches
his sisters hockey games as well. She is
also a goalie.
And of course, hell be participating
in his third HNIB Showcase.
I look forward to the tournament and
will really miss playing next summer,
Thulin said.
He credited HNIB coaches Ray
Jacques and Ray Jacques Sr. as mentors,
along with Brian Daccord and John
Carratu from Stop It Goaltending.
As for the future, Thulin is lining up
another year of junior hockey before he
decides on college. He wants to take col-
lege courses in the meantime to keep
my brain working.
Work as hard as you possibly can
and be confident in your abilities,
Thulin said when asked what advice he
gives younger hockey players. If a
coach says that he doesnt think youre
good enough, train twice as hard and
prove him wrong. Success is the best
revenge.

Garrett Torrico and Chris Zuccaro
know what it takes to be suc-
cessful on a competitive level of
hockey like Hockey Night in Boston
(HNIB).
They were on last years winning team
in the Boys Major Showcase. Torrico
assisted on the winning overtime goal
for TeamONE New England in the 4-3
final over Northern New England.
And this summer, theyre back and
hoping for more success.
I think one of the reasons why the
team worked so well was because of
great coaching, said Torrico, 18, a
Mount Washington, Mass., native who
played for the Empire Junior Hockey
League Springfield Pics this past winter.
Skill in hockey can only take a person
so far. The fact that we had skill and had
good coaching really helped us out in the
end.
Zuccaro, an 18-year-old out of
Hudson, N.H., also played in the Empire
Junior Hockey League for the champi-
onship-winning New Hampshire
Monarchs. He is hoping to carry over the
success from HNIB last year and this
past winters Monarchs crew, for which
he scored 27 goals and had 37 assists in
44 games.
I hope to have a strong tournament
