CleanTECH San Diego is five years old! It seems only yesterday that a few people came together to discuss whether the greater San Diego region had the potential to become a world leader in the transition to a more sustainable and climate-friendly society and economy.   The story of how those discussions evolved from a concept to the outcome-based market catalyst we call CleanTECH San Diego today speaks volumes about what makes this region such a dynamic place. It’s also the basis for optimism as we look toward CleanTECH San Diego’s future. We wish we had the space to acknowledge all the people and organizations whose early support and guidance made our organization possible. However, in keeping with this Fifth Anniversary Report, there are five people we want to specifically recognize.

 In Spring 2007, Dr. Tony Haymet, Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography met with Mayor Jerry Sanders to report the alarming climate trends becoming more evident from the work of his scientists, and to note the lack of leadership toward solutions. Concurrently, there were discussions within the Mayor's office about what would be the region’s next economic development driver. The resulting idea was to create an organization whose sole mission would be to accelerate a business-driven approach to the challenges of sustainability, and to brand the San Diego region as the place to be for those involved in this work. With the strong support of Mayor Sanders, CleanTECH San Diego launched in July 2007. Tony Haymet became the organization’s vice chair, and provided invaluable leadership from day one. CONNECT CEO Duane Roth was also critical to the genesis of CleanTECH San Diego. Duane realized the opportunity for San Diego to take an early and highly visible leadership position in a field that was largely undefined. In effect, we were taking the model that created successful San Diego industry clusters and applying those lessons learned to this nascent sector. After a few phone calls from Duane, we secured $35,000 in funding pledges from eight local stakeholders, and critically important promises of in-kind support. The law firm of Latham and Watkins, through one of its partners, Kelley Gale, and the accounting firm of Ernst and Young, through one of its partners, Doug Regnier, provided innumerable hours of pro-bono service from the very beginning.  The countless hours of pro-bono work by these firms made it possible for

CleanTECH San Diego to focus its financial resources on expanding its reach and mission, even as it grew and the legal and accounting needs increased.  Best of all, we recruited Lisa Bicker as CleanTECH San Diego's first CEO, and from there the organization grew in membership, programs and stature. In less than two years, San Diego was recognized as the 7th top cleantech cluster in the world. Invitations poured in to speak at numerous national and international conferences to discuss what was happening in San Diego and provide guidance on how others could enable and support similar clusters in their communities. To this day, Lisa remains an invaluable resource. All this began in the office of Mayor Jerry Sanders, who provides time and support to CleanTECH San Diego whenever requested. The Mayor and his staff’s tireless support dramatically accelerated the growth of this organization and its subsequent impact. Mayor Sanders leaves office in December 2012. We extend him a special "THANK YOU" for all his support, and more importantly, supporting the idea that the San Diego region will continue its leadership in creating a sustainable and livable world. We look forward to working with San Diego's next mayor as we actively promote the multiple benefits within San Diego and beyond in executing the organization's mission and vision. CleanTECH San Diego is comprised of 110 member corporations and enterprises. Anyone who thinks the work of CleanTECH San Diego is important owes each of these members a huge thanks. Without their ongoing support, CleanTECH San Diego wouldn’t exist. We are constantly humbled by the vote of confidence represented by their support and active participation. Five years ago, we couldn’t have predicted that CleanTECH San Diego would be where it is today.   With all that we’ve learned since 2007, we believe we as an organization, with multiple and diverse stakeholders, can set and reach a regional goal for the next five years. San Diego has actively engaged political, academic, business and civic communities. We have incredible entrepreneurs working on both today's problems and solutions for the future.   In other words, we have the most important ingredient for transformational action – the right people. Join us in realizing our next five-year goal to make San Diego the most sustainable and resilient region in the world.

MissionCleanTECH San Diego is a private, non-profit member organization formed in 2007. As one of the nation's premier cleantech cluster organizations, its mission is to position the region as a global leader in the cleantech economy. CleanTECH San Diego serves as a catalyst for a diverse group of stakeholders to advance a common agenda. Our mission is to stimulate innovation and advance the adoption of clean technologies and sustainable industry practices for the economic, environmental and social benefit of the greater San Diego region. We accomplish this through a series of programs including education and outreach, policy advocacy and leadership opportunities. Our membership includes business and financial leaders, academic and research institutes, and government and non-profit organizations.

  

StrategyBrand: Establish San Diego as a world destination for all things clean tech. Attract green jobs, green talent and green money to the region while exporting our green products globally.

Policy: Work with regional, state and federal policy makers to adopt rules supporting clean technology innovation and commercialization. Focus on products, services and solutions that are particularly effective in the American Southwest.

Innovation: Work to bring clean technology research efforts to the region; coordinate with established research facilities to identify both synergies and gaps.

Capital: Bring additional private capital, both strategic and financial to the region. Position San Diego as a major source of quality deal flow among green investors.

Connective Tissue: Serve as a hub for the many but disparate stakeholders in the clean energy community.

Access: Our membership is a diverse blend of public and private entities with interests and operations that extend beyond the greater San Diego region. Our powerful private sector base includes corporate leaders such as General Atomics, Sapphire Energy, GE, OSIsoft and Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Combine this with our rich research and university resources, as well as our reach into local government and the NGO community, and you have a diverse membership that delivers access to those that make and influence decisions.

Advocacy:CleanTECH San Diego continues to represent its members and the region’s cleantech cluster in Sacramento and Washington DC. CleanTECH San Diego and its members meet regularly with legislative and administration officials at the state and national level to educate them on the region’s activities and to underscore the policies that both support and hinder the cleantech economy.

Commercialization Support:Our innovative SCRUB program is designed to enable access to capital, support and services for promising early stage businesses. Since its inception, 41 companies have been selected and scrubbed. On June 27, EvoNexus, the CommNexus San Diego incubator for startup companies, announced its collaboration with CleanTECH San Diego to aid entrepreneurs in bringing early-stage cleantech ventures to market. The partnership will foster economic development with the EvoNexus ground-breaking community incubator model. The SCRUB program will continue to serve as the connective tissue and maintain an active pipeline of new candidate companies to both EvoNexus’ downtown and La Jolla offices.

San Diego is home to over 850 diverse cleantech companies.

San Diego leads the nation in solar power installations with more than 16,000 solar rooftops and 125MW in capacity.

San Diego hosts North America’s first and only all-electric fleet car sharing service through Daimler’s car2go program.As the nation’s leader in electrical vehicle deployment, more than 10% of the 20,000 Nissan Leafs sold in 2012 were ordered by San Diegans.

Smart City San Diego and the San Diego Zoo install a solar photovoltaic canopy to charge electric vehicles in the Zoo parking lot and serves as the region’s first of its kind. Solar power will charge plug-in EVs, store solar power, and provide renewable energy to the community.

The San Diego Street Light Working Group comprises 13 of San Diego County’s 18 municipalities and retrofitted 55,000 streetlights to energy-efficient LED and induction technology. This collaboration is saving taxpayers $3M annually and generating more than $25M in local job creation for local electrical contractors, suppliers and lighting manufacturers.

UC San Diego’s world renowned microgrid self-generates 93% of its energy and provides the ability to manage 42MW of generating capacity, including a central cogeneration plant, an array of solar photovoltaic installations and a fuel cell that operates on natural gas reclaimed from a landfill site.

San Diego leads the US Military’s clean energy efforts: the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station is the first military base in the US to be powered by landfill gas. Camp Pendleton is home to a solar project that is one the greenest US armed forces bases worldwide.

San Diego’s cleantech sector generated over $3 billion in direct, indirect and regional economic activity and created over 10,000 jobs in 2011. 

CleanTECH San Diego participated in a first-of-its-kind public/private partnership to create curricula to support San Diego’s biofuels sector.  Over 300 EDGE trainees have graduated and 102 have been hired.

San Diego Gas & Electric ranks as most intelligent utility in the nation for the third year in a row by IDC Energy Insights and Intelligent Utility Magazine.

San Diego’s successful EDGE Biofuels Initiative will be replicated to develop the workforce training in other cleantech sectors. Building off the best practices developed in the  Greening San Diego program, CleanTECH San Diego will leverage its collaborations to empower municipalities and other institutions to strategically reduce energy use through the launch of its Shave the Peak and Residential Energy Efficiency programs.

CleanTECH San Diego will continue its support of early stage cleantech companies through its SCRUB program and other commercialization efforts. CleanTECH San Diego will continue to strengthen and diversify membership development and retention programs.

CleanTECH San Diego’s advocacy efforts will continue to identify and advocate "mission critical" policies at the federal, state and regional levels that support innovation and clean technology solutions. Implementation and development of East County renewables, PACE, and educating policy makers and regulators. CleanTECH San Diego will continue to   convene   stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of technology:  Smart City San Diego.
