The 2003 Citadel volleyball team returns five of sixstarters from a year ago, a season that saw 18 team andindividual records fall.

Leading the Bulldogs into her fifth season as coach,Wendy Anderson, has guided The Citadel to all of its victoriesin the five-year history of the program. She looks to con-tinue building a tradition of teamwork, unity, and hard-nosedplay.

“Now that we have been around for a few years, wecan finally try to fill holes left by graduation with the type ofplayers that we think will benefit The Citadel and our team.”

This year’s squad looks to do what no other Bulldogvolleyball team has ever done, win a conference match andmake the Southern Conference Tournament, which will beheld in Chattanooga this November. With the leadership oftwo four-year starters, Desiree Browning and Lindsey Hodge, and three other returning starters, the squad looks to make animpact on the league.

Browning, who holds all of the school’s assistrecords, will be the glue that holds the team together.Browning will be the leader on and off the floor. Andersonlooks to her setter to control the team on the floor and in theclassroom, as she is an example to the rest of the squad bygraduating in only three years and beginning work on herpost-graduate degree this fall.

Joining Browning will be fellow senior LindseyHodge, a middle blocker and outside hitter. Hodge, wholed the team with 42 service aces, will be the team’s go toplayer as Anderson will look to her to finish the big play. Shewill be leaned on to get the big side out or kill when needed.

Juniors Audra Ritchie and Katie Livingston, both two-year starters, will play a big role in the middle of the courtfor the Bulldogs. Ritchie will be the squad’s force at the net asthe team’s main blocker. As a freshman in 2001, she brokethe season block record with 82 and built on that in hersecond season. Ritchie looks to continue her dominance inthe middle as a junior.

The coaching staff will look upon Livingston, whowas the team’s Libero last season, as a utility player. She is areserve setter and a defensive specialist, who walked on as afreshman and has subsequently earned a scholarship for herdedicated work ethic.

Samantha Parisi and Stefanie Farris, both of whomplayed in all ofthe Bulldogs’games in 2002,will need tostep up theirplay in orderto help TheCitadel makethe SoConTournament.Parisi, whocould possiblybe the mostknowledgeableplayer on thesquad due toher extensiveplay in hernative Greece, will lead byexample. The

coaches believe she has matured into a fine player with qualityplay in the spring. She finished among the team leaders inseveral statistical categories, total attacks (569), digs (251) andkills (193).

Farris,an outsidehitter, is one thecoaches hopecontinues todevelop. She isan all-aroundgreat athletewho showedher athleticismcould make upfor her lack ofknowledgeabout thecollege game.Anderson looksto Farris to useher power tohave a breakout year.

Twoother sopho-mores who will contribute to the 2003 goals of winning theirfirst conference match and making it to post-season play areMelissa Fridinger and Marina Daniel. Fridinger, a defensivespecialist, has improved tremendously in the off-season andcould see more playing time in the fall with her increasedknowledge of the sport. Daniel, who returns as a right sidehitter, is a big blocking force who has developed her game tofit well into coach Anderson’s system.

There are three freshmen on the 2003 roster and thecoaching staff hopes that all three can make an immediateimpact. Kim Cooper, a middle blocker, is going to belooked upon to fill the void in the middle. Anderson believesthat she will be a big part of the team for years to come andis expected to advance the team to the tournament.

Fellow freshmen Christen Cox and Danelle Cenker, will be works in progress for Coach Anderson and her staff.Cox, an outside hitter, is a great athlete that needs to polishher game, while Cenker will platoon at the defensive specialistposition.

The 2003 Citadel volleyball schedule consists of 27matches and one tournament that have the Bulldogs startingon August 30 in a tri-match against Navy and CharlestonSouthern in the Bulldogs’ own back yard, McAlister FieldHouse. With the Southern Conference splitting into a two-division conference, North and South, and Elon joining theleague, Coach Anderson’s team will play 18 SoCon matches.Nine non-conference opponents are on the slate in 2003,including military rival Navy and cross-town rival CharlestonSouthern. The Bulldogs will even travel to Chicago in earlyNovember to take on Chicago State.

Moreover, The Citadel volleyball team is moving inthe right direction. Anderson finally believes that with thisteam’s combination of size, strength and speed between thereturning players and incoming freshmen, the 2003 squadcould have a memorable season that may propel the Bulldogsinto post-season play.

The Citadel Volleyball 2003 Facilities

Originally constructed in 1939 andrenovated in 1989, McAlister Field Houseserves as the home of The Citadel’svolleyball, basketball and wrestling programs.

The facility, which also houses theathletic department’s administrative officesalong with locker rooms for the basketballand baseball teams, has a seating capacity of6,000.

When built in 1939, the facility wasreferred to as “The Citadel Armory,” andseated 4,500 for basketball games.

In 2001, The Citadel annexed awomen’s facility onto McAlister Field House. The women’s wing is home to offices and locker roomsfor the women’s volleyball and soccer teams.

Top to bottom, McAlister Field House is one of the top volleyball, basketball and wrestlingarenas in the region for both participants and fans. Even though 6,000 fans can pack into McAlisterField House for a basketball game, no fan is further than 24 rows away from the court. In addition, consession stands and restroom facilities are located on both the first and second floors.

With the seats pulled back, there are three full-size basketball and volleyball courts for practice.During inclement weather, The Citadel’s baseball, football, tennis and track teams use the facility.

The Citadel has hosted three 6,000-fan “sellout” crowds in basketball since the building’srenovation in 1989, including games with Duke (1989), South Carolina (1997) and College ofCharleston (1999).

In January of 1998 and 2002, The Citadel and McAlister Field House hosted the annual All-Academy Wrestling Championships.

McAlister Field House served as the host arena of the 2002 and 2003 Southern ConferenceWomen’s Basketball Championships and is scheduled for the 2004 tournament.

McAlister Field House has also hosted such entertainment acts as Dave Matthews, WidespreadPanic, Bob Hope, Kenny Rogers and PattiLaBelle. Events that have utilized the multi-purpose building include WCW Wrestling,Charleston Cup Gymnastics Championships,Special Olympics, Moja Arts FestivalActivities, Rotary/Red Cross Roundball HighSchool Basketball Classic and assorted highschool and college graduation ceremonies.
