She was a homemaker and ac- tive member of Im- manuel Baptist Church. CROSS Mark Edward, 59, husband of Diane Smith Cross, died Fri, July 6, 2012, after a determined fight with an illness. He was born Feb 21, 1953, in Alliance, OH to Helen Tate Cross and Ed- ward Cross. Mark spent his life explor- ing new frontiers with Diane, his soul mate, and partner in many of his adventures. The couple raised their family in Alaska, a place that suited Mark's spontaneous spirit. He lived a full and prosperous life as a college track star at Kent State University, an intrepid world traveler, and dedi- cated himself to teach- ing children of all ages. Mark most re- cently worked as guidance counselor at the Early Learning Village in Frankfort, KY, where his wife works as a kindergar- ten teacher. Mark's family will remember him as an adventurer and sci-fi fanatic, a loving husband and father, who did every- thing with boundless enthusiasm. In addi- tion to his wife, Mark is survived by his son, Nathan Cross, and his wife, Mare, of Minne- apolis, MN; daughter, Kelly Cross of New York, NY; brother, Matt Cross, and his wife, Chris; and his mother, Helen Cross. LIBERTY - J Dr. George William Sweeney, 90, passed away July 6, 2012 at his home in Liberty. The End of an Era: For the first time in over 100 years, Casey County is without a Dr. Sweeney. Dr. George was born on April 23, 1922 at the same address where he lived until his death. George was married to Mollie Kathryn Popplewell Sweeney for 42 years. She died in 1989. The youngest child of Wil- liam Jasper and Edna Jones Sweeney. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Jasper and Dr. Garnett Jones Sweeney; two sisters, Lucy Sweeney Wash and Ruth Sweeney Wesley and a grand- son, Jason Oliver Cof- fey. A precocious child and an athletic teen, George never shied away from hard work on the small family farm. He graduated from lib- erty High School and went on to attend the University of Ken- tucky. In 1942, after two years of college, George enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the North Atlantic on the U.S.S. Bogue and ended his war service in the South Pacific. In 1944 George married his childhood sweetheart, Mollie and they re- turned to Lexington where he finished his undergraduate stud- ies. In 1947 they moved to Louisville where he completed his Doctor of Medi- cine and his resi- dency. In 1951 they returned to Liberty where he joined his brother in the medi- cal practice that was begun by their late fa- ther. George and Mol- lie had four children who survive; Suzanne LaFavers (Mickey), Steve Sweeney (Rita Godbey Sweeney), Lydia Coffey (Jim), and Sally Davis (Ron- nie). Also surviving are eight grandchil- dren, Lisa LaFavers Combs, Mike Sweeney LaFavers, Lara Sweeney Johnson, Beth Sweeney Kress, Katy Sweeney Wilson, Luke William Davis, Matt Winston Davis and Meredith Kath- ryn Coffey. He also leaves behind 12 great-grandchildren, Zack and Kathryn Combs, Mollie, Made- lyn and Will LaFavers, Elizabeth, Henry and Mollie Johnson, Lucy and Jack Wilson, George and Annie Davis and soon to be number 13, Baby Davis. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and best friend, Paul Wes- ley. Dr. George said his greatest accom- plishment was gradu- ating from medical school. He practiced with his brother Gar- nett and Dr. Lewis Wesley until the death of Dr. Wesley. Dr. Garnett and Dr. George retired from their practice in 1996. He will be remem- bered for being a compassionate doctor, a caring person who quietly served his community and a humble man who lived simply and loved much. He will be greatly missed. Dr. George was a lifetime member of First Christian Church where he will be re- membered with an in- formal memorial ser- vice on Sun, July 8. The family will re- ceive visitors at the church from 3pm un- til the time of the ser- vice which will begin at 6pm. A private burial will take place at a later time. Dr. George WilliamSweeney, 90, passedaway July 6, 2012 athis home in Liberty.The End of an Era:For the first time inover 100 years, CaseyCounty is without aDr. Sweeney. Dr.George was born onApril 23, 1922 at thesame address wherehe lived until hisdeath. George wasmarried to MollieKathryn PopplewellSweeney for 42 years.She died in 1989. Theyoungest child of Wil-liam Jasper and EdnaJones Sweeney. Hewas preceded in deathby two brothers,Charles Jasper andDr. Garnett JonesSweeney; two sisters,Lucy Sweeney Washand Ruth SweeneyWesley and a grand-son, Jason Oliver Cof-fey. A precociouschild and an athleticteen, George nevershied away from hardwork on the smallfamily farm. Hegraduated from lib-erty High School andwent on to attend theUniversity of Ken-tucky. In 1942, aftertwo years of college,George enlisted in theU.S. Navy. He servedin the North Atlanticon the U.S.S. Bogueand ended his warservice in the SouthPacific. In 1944George married hischildhood sweetheart,Mollie and they re-turned to Lexingtonwhere he finished hisundergraduate stud-ies. In 1947 theymoved to Louisvillewhere he completedhis Doctor of Medi-cine and his resi-dency. In 1951 theyreturned to Libertywhere he joined hisbrother in the medi-cal practice that wasbegun by their late fa-ther. George and Mol-lie had four childrenwho survive; SuzanneLaFavers (Mickey),Steve Sweeney (RitaGodbey Sweeney),Lydia Coffey (Jim),and Sally Davis (Ron-nie). Also survivingare eight grandchil-dren, Lisa LaFaversCombs, MikeSweeney LaFavers,Lara SweeneyJohnson, BethSweeney Kress, KatySweeney Wilson,Luke William Davis,Matt Winston Davisand Meredith Kath-ryn Coffey. He alsoleaves behind 12great-grandchildren,Zack and KathrynCombs, Mollie, Made-lyn and Will

Dr. George saidhis greatest accom-plishment was gradu-ating from medicalschool. He practicedwith his brother Gar-nett and Dr. LewisWesley until the deathof Dr. Wesley. Dr.Garnett and Dr.George retired fromtheir practice in 1996.He will be remem-bered for being acompassionate doctor,a caring person whoquietly served hiscommunity and ahumble man wholived simply and lovedmuch. He will begreatly missed.
