President of the College

Peyton Randolph Helm took offi ce as president of Muhlenberg College July 1, 2003. He holds the faculty rank of professor of history.

Immediately prior to joining the Muhlenberg community, Helm served as vice president for college relations and professor of classical stud-ies at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Helm began his career in academic admin-istration at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was named coordinator of College House Programs in 1981. He served as associate director of development and then director of development for Penn’s School of Arts and Sci-ences. From 1981-1988 he was also an adjunct assistant professor of ancient history and urban studies at Penn. In 1988, Helm was named vice president for development and alumni relations at Colby, where he was promoted to vice president for college relations in 2001. At Muhlenberg, Green oversees more than 70 full-time employees and several departments, including athletics and recreation. “Muhlenberg is committed to our scholar athletes and the athletic programs are an inte-gral part of a liberal arts education,” said Green. “Th e lessons learned from participation in our programs will sustain our students throughout their lives. Th e opportunity to be involved in intramural and recreational programs pro-vides balance from the rigors of a challenging academic experience. Students learn negotiation skills, teamwork, time management and to be eff ective leaders. “Our coaches are committed to excellence and are partners with students notwithstanding their skill level.” Green received her baccalaureate degree from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta in 1986, where the Karen Green Human Relations Award was created in her honor. She went on to earn her master’s of divinity from the Candler School of Th eology at Emory University in 1997. Following a national search, Muhlenberg College named Sam Beidleman director of athletics in July 2003. He had been serving as interim director of athlet-

ics since April 1, 2003. As director of athletics, Beidleman supervises Muhlenberg’s 22-sport varsity intercollegiate program, as well as the intramural and recre-ation programs. “Muhlenberg College is proud of its long-standing tradition of academic and athletic excellence,” said Beidleman. “While we strive to win on the fi eld or court, we measure our suc-cess in many other ways including the develop-ment of character, leadership, scholarship and ethical behavior.” Beidleman returned to Muhlenberg after a prior 35-year association with the College, dur-ing which he held responsibilities in every area of athletics programming – as a student, coach, faculty member and administrator. He was a varsity letterwinner in football and track and spent 13 seasons as an assistant football coach following his graduation in 1963. It was as a baseball coach that Beidleman truly made his mark, coaching the Mules from 1970 to 1992 and winning 255 games. His teams captured fi ve Middle Atlantic Conference Southwest League titles and three Southern Division championships. Beidleman, who held the academic rank of associate professor of physical education from 1965 to 1992, also served as men’s intramural director and director of recreation. After retiring from coach-ing, he was the full-time athletic business and facilities manager until August 2000. A 2006 inductee into the Muhlenberg Athletic Hall of Fame, Beidleman earned his master’s degree in counseling and guidance from Kutztown University in 1970.

Corey Goff was promoted to associate director of athletics in 2008 after fi ve years as an assistant director of athletics. In addition to his administrative duties, he serves as head baseball coach and summer camp coordinator.

Megan Eddinger was promoted to senior woman administrator in 2010. In addition to her administra-tive duties, she serves as advisor to the Student-

Athlete Advisory Committee and head fi eld hockey coach.

CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE

www.centennial.org

In its 19th year of all-sports competition, the Centennial Conference has taken its place among the nation’s elite small-college conferences. Founded in 1983 as the Centennial Football Conference and expanded to an all-sports league in 1992, the Centen-nial Conference encour-ages athletic competition among national liberal arts colleges and universities that share similar academic aspirations and a commit-ment to the importance of the total educational experience of students en-gaged in sports. Intercol-legiate athletics programs are an integral part of the life of the member institutions and fl ow from their educational objectives. Each institution provides a comprehensive, broad-based athletics program. All varsity sports are treated equitably, and every sport is important. The CC softball cham-pion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

MuhlenbergMuhlenbergAthleticsAthletics Muhlenberg College sponsors a comprehensive 22-sport inter-collegiate athletics program. Th e Mules compete in the Centen-nial Conference in all sports and are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. Muhlenberg’s sports program is designed to off er quality competitive experiences for the serious athlete, with opportuni-ties for outstanding teams and individuals to advance to national Division III championships. However, given the breadth of the program, opportunities also exist for the unrecruited athlete to participate in varsity sports. Muhlenberg has excellent on-campus athletic facilities. Opened in 1982, the Life Sports Center is a building designed for athlet-ics, intramurals and “sports for life” as primary uses. Th e original solar-heated building, a series of three addi-tions to the Memorial Hall gym-nasium, in-cludes the spacious John Dei-trich Field House, featuring basketball and tennis courts and a 160-meter running track; the 25-meter Alumni Pool; and the Levering Tyson wing, containing racquetball and squash courts and rooms for sports medicine, weight training, wrestling, dance, instruction and equipment distribution. Memorial Hall, the origi-nal facility built in 1954, seats 3,529 and is an excellent facility for viewing indoor sports. Th e Life Sports Center recently underwent a signifi cant renova-tion that further improved the Mules’ facilities. Th e three-level, 40,000-square foot addition was built directly west of the Dei-trich Field House and opened in the fall of 2004. Th e new facility includes additional locker rooms and offi ce space, new recreation and fi tness areas and a new health and counseling center. Outdoors, the Mules have a grass fi eld used by the men’s and women’s soccer teams, constructed in 1997, and a stadium for use by fi eld hockey, football and lacrosse surrounded by an eight-lane, all-weather track, constructed in 1998 and resurfaced with AstroTurf GameDay Grass™ 3D in 2008.

During the 2010-11 school year, Muhlenberg won Cen-tennial Conference championships in football, women’s basketball and softball. The men’s soccer and women’s basketball teams reached the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament, and Mule individuals earned bids to the NCAA Championships in men’s track and fi eld and men’s cross country.

After sharing a home park for 10 years, the Muhlenberg softball program is in its eighth year at a facility it can truly call “HOME”! Located less than two miles from campus, Cedarcreek Field was built in the spring and summer of 2004 at the Lehigh County Sports Fields complex, which is also home to the Mule baseball

team and serves as a practice site for the Muhlenberg soccer teams. Th e fi eld features spacious dugouts that give shelter to the home and visiting teams. Th e entire fi eld is enclosed with fencing that gives proper softball dimensions of 200 feet down the lines and 225 feet to dead center, which off er some excitement for the long-ball hitters. A bullpen allows the Mules to warm up their pitchers right behind the home dugout. Th e red windscreens add a cardinal touch to the fi eld, and the dugout color scheme fi ts the Mule logos just right. In 2007, an electronic scoreboard was added. It is a facility to be proud of for the Muhlenberg and Lehigh Valley communities.

A three-level, 40,000-square-foot addition to the Life Sports Center opened in August 2004, further improving Muhlenberg College’s athletic facilities. Th e addition, built

directly west of the John Deitrich Field House, includes a large weight facility, an expanded cardio-fi tness area, a snack bar, new facilities for health service and counseling, training rooms, locker rooms and coaches’ offi ces. Th e structure off ers a spectacular view of the College’s out-door facilities and is joined to the original Life Sports Center by a large indoor corridor on the main level. A new main entrance faces the campus. Th e project also entailed renovations in the Field House, including installation of a new fl oor and track, new netting, new lighting and painting.

Th e Muhlenberg softball program has a strong tradition of athletic and aca-demic excellence. Th e team set a College record for all sports with 22 consecutive seasons of double digits in wins (1985-2006). From 1989 to 1992, the squad became the fi rst in school athletic history to win 20 or more contests in four consecutive seasons, averaging 24.5 wins a year in that span and earning frequent national rankings. In 1989, softball became the fi rst team in any sport to repre-sent ’Berg in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Th e Mules reached the regional fi nal that year and again in 1990 and 1991. Muhlenberg was a dynasty in the Southeast Division of the Middle Atlantic Conference, winning six consecutive champi-onships from 1987 to 1993. Th e Mules went on to win the MAC South title four times and the

overall MAC crown three times. Th e Mules have maintained their success since join-ing the Centen-nial Conference in 1994, winning CC championships in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2009 and 2011. Th e fi ve titles are tied for the most in the league’s history.

Since 2000, Muhlenberg has earned fi ve bids to the NCAA Championships, winning two games in the national tournament twice.

Four Mules have been named CC player of the year and three others have earned pitcher-of-the-year honors. Muhlenberg has been equally impressive in the classroom. Th e team has been cited by the National Softball Coaches Association for having one of the top 30 team GPAs in Divi-sion III and has produced fi ve Academic All-Americans and two NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients.

Former Muhlenberg players and coaches returned in April 2005 for an alumni game and the dedication of the Mules’ new fi eld.

Th e Mules have earned nine bids to the NCAA Tourna-ment since 1989.

HistoryHistory

Th e 1991 softball team was inducted into the Muhlenberg College Athletic Hall of Fame in October 2011. One of the great-est women’s teams in the Col-lege’s athletic history, the Mules compiled a record of 26-9 and set a still-standing school record for all sports with 20 straight wins. During the season, Muhlenberg was ranked as high as No. 5 in Division III.
