PrefaceBMO Financial Group’s donation to the work of Health Arts Societies and Société pour les arts en milieux de santé provides a platform for an unprecedented programme in the history of Canadian arts. Never before has it been possible for so many isolated in care; people with disabilities and frail elders, to enjoy high quality music-making in a wide variety of genres. The singular achievement is in the establishment of the principle that frail elders, people who have contributed to the building of our country, must be included among audiences for live music.

This report describes the work of the societies during the period of participation to date of BMO Financial Group as National Funder of the programme. It also reviews the work of the societies from its foundation in 2006 and looks forward to the tenth anniversary of that founding, and beyond. The partnership with BMO Financial Group has, we trust, satisfied the Group’s expectations as partners in the programme. There remains a great deal to do to consolidate the programme

nationally but the foundations have been laid for building in each province by people who value the principles of the societies and bring local insight and expertise to their development.

BMO Financial Group’s contribution is of unprecedented scale and stands as a public reinforcement of the its values as a corporation and as a leader in Canadian social development.

Votre oeuvre me touche et suscite toute mon admiration / I was moved by this initiative which deserves all my admiration. – Yannick Nézet-Séguin

IntroductionHealth Arts Societies and Société pour les arts en milieux de santé are a Canada-wide group of registered charities bringing the joy and enrichment of first-class, professionally-performed music to people, particularly frail elders, isolated in care. The first of these societies, Health Arts Society, was founded in British Columbia in 2006.

The seven societies, serving audiences in all provinces are the following:

Health Arts Society (BC)Health Arts Society of AlbertaHealth Arts Society of ReginaHealth Arts Society of ManitobaHealth Arts Society of OntarioSociété pour les arts en milieux de santéHealth Arts Society of Atlantic Canada

Concerts in Care are 45-minute concerts performed by first-class professional musicians in institutional residences for people with chronic frailties, illnesses and disabilities. The societies address the imbalance between services provided to audiences able to access live music in the community and those isolated, often for the rest of their lives, in residential care.

Health Arts Societies stand by their purpose to inform Canadians of the importance of providing first-class music for people in care for all the reasons it is important to do so for other sectors of the community; from the youngest children to those elders who can attend events. There is a great deal of recent research demonstrating the value of music to people’s well-being. Knowing that music is integral to human experience we are now learning how the mind responds to it. Concerts in Care are therapeutic in the same way as music is therapeutic for everybody, and we also know that it’s especially valued and enriching when people are otherwise excluded from musical life; the remarkable responses to Concerts in Care exhibited by people with a range of frailties, including severe dementia, tell us so. It’s not surprising that something so ubiquitous in our lives should be missed when it’s absent – and quality is vital.

Our PerformersConcerts in Care performers are chosen from the ranks of presenting organizations across the country and the community of freelance professional musicians, who are paid for their work, although the audiences also benefit from the artists’ goodwill. The distinctive innovations of Concerts in Care are its ambitious scale, regularity and professionalism.

Our AudienceElders and others entering care must leave their homes and possessions and give up their lives as autonomous individuals. They have often suffered

significant personal losses, including the deaths of a spouse and many of their circle of friends, and must reconcile themselves to declining health.

Concerts in Care helps to normalize their existence, bringing them the enrichment of fine music and respectful and vitalizing contact with performers.

The Work of Health Arts Societies and Société pour les arts en milieux de santéConcerts in Care brings music to people isolated in care for a fraction of the cost of delivery of equivalent programming to well and autonomous audiences.

A very substantial proportion of the societies’ revenues is paid to musicians and extremely efficient techniques for delivery and service of the concerts have been developed. Each society is a registered charity responding to specific conditions in each province. The administration and development functions of all of the societies are managed by a small core team.

Concerts in Care is a uniquely-scaled and efficient response to a significant human need of people isolated in care.

4 2012–2014 REPORT for BMO FINANCIAL GROUP

Page 7: 2012-2014 Report

Looking ahead to 20152015 is the 10th anniversary of the founding of the first Health Arts Society. Now we have an opportunity for all Health Arts Societies and SAMS to commemorate the inception of what is a cross-Canada programme, to reflect with some satisfaction on its achievements to date and to look forward to vigorously expanding Concerts in Care to become a normal part of Canadian cultural practices.

An important job is to reinforce community engagement in the programme while at the same time providing administration services that spread operating costs over several societies. Health Arts Society in BC and SAMS in Quebec are essentially autonomous, and Health Arts Society of Ontario and Health Arts Society of Atlantic Canada are moving in that direction. Boards of directors will be increasingly peopled with local members, and artistic direction will

devolve to their designates. The practice of establishing chapters in which performers, administrators and fundraisers work with local communities, is also gaining ground.

Collaborations between Health Arts Societies and its Associate Organizations normalize Concerts in Care as a project whose values are shared by organizations responsible in their communities for providing a wide range of programmes for audiences, and employment for musicians.

Funders who provide the material support of the work of Health Arts Societies/SAMS can take satisfaction in enabling the Societies to address audiences numbering hundreds of thousands and providing thousands of musician engagements. We look forward to partnering with them in the next stage of the Societies’ work to make Concerts in Care simply something we do in Canada.

In short, the message for 2015 is that a remarkable project is being built – and there is so much more work to do!

I must say that these performances that continue to come to our facilities are absolutely fantastic. The talents are amazing and we are always treated to an original performance. The ‘tidbits’ of information the artists share with the audience regarding songs or an instrument is fascinating. We feel very fortunate to be part of this fabulous program. Thanks to everyone involved – especially the sponsors for making it possible.

Red Chamber takes its inspiration from the traditional Chinese “plucked string” repertoire that is seldom if ever heard in the West. Featuring only plucked strings, they create a unique sound while performing a repertoire that spans centuries, including transcriptions from the Tang Dynasty(618–907)tomoderncompositions.Red Chamber also explore other genres of plucked string music such as Bluegrass, jazz, and a host of other folk traditions.

Beethoven, Bob and Borealis in BCThroughout 2013–2014 the distinguished pianist Robert Silverman and British Columbia’s principal string quartet, the Borealis String Quartet, will undertake 200 concerts across British Columbia. The programme will be centred on the incomparable works of Beethoven combined with a range of other attractive repertoire to provide audiences with an unusually high level of engagement and delight. This exceptional tour will reach an audience of over 8,000. This project is generously supported by the Vancouver Foundation, Odlum Brown and the Province of British Columbia.

To have professional singers come and make their glorious music touches something very deep within. I thought today of a quote that I read some time ago. “The soul needs beauty, like the body needs bread”. You brought beauty to our lives here...and it moved many of us to tears.
