EXPLORATION – NETWORK FUNDAMENTALS

FALL, 2011

COURSE DESCRIPTION 

Prerequisites: Advanced level of understanding of personal computers and operating systemsapproved by designated Information Technology personnel.

A course introducing the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of theInternet. Describes the use of OSI and TCP layered models to examine the nature and roles of 

protocols and services at the applications, network, data link, and physical layers. Covers theprinciples and structure of IP addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, andoperations. Build simple LAN topologies by applying basic principles of cabling; perform basic

configurations of network devices, including routers and switches; and implementing IPaddressing schemes.

ITCC 1401 is a 4 credit hour course. (3 lec., 4 lab.)

WECM END OF COURSE OUTCOMES: Identify and describe internet architecture,structure, functions, components, and models; describe the use of OSI and TCP layered models;identify and describe the nature and roles of protocols and services at the application, network,

data link, and physical layers; describe principles and structure of IP addressing and thefundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations; and build simple LAN topologies by

applying basic principles of cabling, device configuration, and IP subnetting.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

As a result of students participating in ITCC 1401 Exploration Network Fundamentals,

students will be able to:

  Write a one-page research paper identifying and describing Internet architecture,structure, functions, components, and models

  Analyze and trouble shoot networking problems using the OSI and TCP layered models.

  Assess the nature and roles of protocols and services at the application, network, datalink, and physical layers

  Apply IP addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations.

  Work in teams to build simple LAN topologies by applying basic principles of cabling,device configuration, and IP subnetting

STOP BEFORE YOU DROP

For students who enrolled in college level courses for the first time in the fall of 2007, Texas

Education Code 51.907 limits the number of courses a student may drop. You may drop no

more than six (6) courses during your entire undergraduate career, unless the drop

qualifies as an exception. Your campus counseling/advising center will give you moreinformation on the allowable exceptions.

REPEATING A COURSE

Effective for Fall Semester 2005, the Dallas County Community Colleges will charge additional

tuition to students registering the third or subsequent time for a course. All third and subsequentattempts of the majority of credit and Continuing Education/Workforce Training courses will resultin additional tuition to be charged. The comprehensive Final Cisco Exam must be taken on the date given. If you cannot take the final

Room A431 is open to all students from:

5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Friday

A431 may be used at times when classes are not in session during each week. Come to the CollegeComputer Center, A435, if you wish to enter the Cisco Academy Lab, A431. A list of studentscurrently enrolled in all Cisco classes is available in the College Computer Center (A435) and will be

checked prior to anyone being admitted to A431.

Cisco testing materials can ONLY be retrieved in A431 or A423. Lesson materials can also beaccessed in the College Computer Center, A435 during times when the Cisco labs are not available.

CLASSROOM RULES AND EXPECTATIONS

All students are required to practice courteous, respectful, cooperative behavior at all times, as

this would be the norm in any higher education or work environment.

To avoid distractions in the classroom, students will:

Arrive on time and stay until class is dismissed;

Be prepared and stay on task;Leave all food, drink, candy and gum outside the classroom;

Listen courteously to one speaker at a time, with no interruptions and no sideconversations;Generally behave as mature adults would in the workplace.

GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES

Students are expected to follow established procedures of the appropriate division in handlingacademic issues, such as grade appeals. El Centro College requires that other complaints and

RELIGIOUS HOLY DAYS STATEMENT

A student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to

take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time afterthe absence if, not later than the fifteenth day after the first day of the semester, the student notified

the instructor of each class scheduled on the date that the student would be absent for a religious holyday. A “religious holy day” means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship areexempt from property taxation under Section 11.20, Tax Code. The notice shall be in writing and

shall be delivered by the student personally to the instructor, with receipt acknowledged and dated bythe instructor or by certified mail, return receipt requested, addressed to the instructor. A studentwho is excused under this section may not be penalized for the absence, but the instructor may

appropriately respond if the student fails to satisfactorily complete the assignment or examination.

CHILDREN ON CAMPUS

El Centro College strives to protect an environment most conducive to teaching and learning for all

enrolled students. Minor children may not be brought to classrooms, labs, testing areas or studyareas of the college. This practice is disruptive to the learning process. Children who are taking partin organized scheduled activities, or who are enrolled in specific classes, are welcomed. For reasons

  Start your internet browser (you need Firefox 3.5 (preferred) or Internet Explorer 7 or 8(incompatibility mode)

  Input your student ID number with an “e” in front of student ID number. This is the Username.

  Tab over to the Password slot

  Input your student ID number with an “e” in front of the student ID number. This is used for the

  Click on the Login button

This will get you to your Homepage tab on eCampus called "My DCCCD".Under the Tools area, you can check your grades for your eCampus courses, read the courseannouncements, send email to your instructor, change your password, input your email address and yourpersonal information on eCampus.

To Access Your Course:   Click on the Courses Tab or

  Click on the underlined title of your courseYou may then click on the tabs on the left side of your screen to access specific areas within your course.

FOR ALL ECC FACULTY, STAFF & CURRENTLY ENROLLED STUDENTS

General Rules1.  Food, drinks and the use of cellular phones, or web phones will not be permitted in the lab.

2.  Children may not be present in the lab at anytime.3.  Computer games are not to be played on the computers.4.  Walkmans, CD/MP3 players, radios, or music CDs are permitted, but must be used with headphones, ear

 buds, etc. and cannot be heard by the next person in the area you are seating in. If you can’t abide, you willbe asked to leave.

5.  No downloading of music or playing musical tones from websites.6.  No personal software may be installed or downloaded from the Internet onto the hard drive of the computer

by faculty, staff or students.

Lab Specific Rules1.  During peak times of the day, there is an enforceable computer usage time limit. Internet usage will be

limited to a 15-minute session. Ask one of the lab assistants for further clarification.2.  Files may not be saved to the hard drive.3.  Software that comes with student books may not be downloaded onto the computer.4.  (Advanced level CIT students only) Configuration files may be modified only in the presence of your

Check-in and out at Front Counter/Sign-on and out procedures with AccuTrack on computers1.  All students are required to provide his/her current student ID throughout the entire semester. If you should

lose or misplace your student ID, a copy of your paid fee receipt can be obtained from the Cashier'sWindow on the second floor of Building A, window A244, or Admissions, A158, on the first floor of Building A. This will be acceptable for that visit only and with proper photo ID. Your student ID can bemade for you in the SPAR office, B270, second floor of Building B.

2.  All faculty and staff members wanting to use a computer must provide his/her staff ID in order to beassigned a computer.

3.  It is recommended that you have a jump/flash drive or some other type of storage medium for saving yourclass assignments.

4.  At the computer you have been assigned, type in your 7-digit student ID number at the AccuTrack welcoming screen and press ENTER. Upon completing your computing session, click on START,Shutdown, and Restart to re-boot the computer. Prior to leaving the Computer Center, return the computerplacard to the front counter.

What Are Scans Skills?

These are the skills that employers need the most from their workers. SCANS skills are thepredictors in the workplace.

Who Defined these Skills?

In 1989, the U.S. Departments of Labor and Education jointly surveyed U.S. employers to find out the mostimportant skills and competencies needed by workers.

The results of the survey identified SCANS (Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills).
