Though it fell just one vote short of claiming a “Best of ” award, Windmill Gardens was the clear favorite among Sumner Valley voters who cast bal-lots in the “Plant Nursery” category.

Manager Ben DeGoede was out of town and not available for comment on the votes, but a tour of the grounds makes it clear why Windmill is a favorite destination. The greenhouse and supply store has served the area since 1968, when it opened as DeGoede Greenhouses. It’s since grown to 16 acres of greenhouses and dis-tributes millions of flow-ers every year. Gardeners throughout the region stop by to shop for annu-als, perennials, shrubs, trees, hanging baskets and enough vegetable plants to stock a farmers’ market.

Visitors will find pots and urns, fertilizers, garden hats and gloves – every-thing necessary to make a perfect yard.

Guests can dine at the Windmill Bistro, purchase their tea needs and hand made jewelry at the Tea Madame Tea Shop, buy pond supplies at the Pond Store or visit Blooms, a full

service floral and gift shop. The floral center is also

a fixture of the community, hosting work parties and providing the material for the city’s Daffodil parade float.

Windmill Gardens is found at 16009 60th St. E. in Sumner and can be reached at 253-863-5843. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Information is available at www.windmillgarden.com.
