2011/2012 Drum Class Schedule
Specialty Workshops
Class Description
Basic Skills - Ian Dickau
This course was created for the beginner drummer in
mind, no experience necessary. We focus our attention
on djembe technique and the sounds that can be cre-
ated from the drum. Come and learn proper posture,
simple rhythms, and a Nigerian drum language. Dur-
ing this 8 weeks we move at a pace that ensures confi-
dence when drumming in a circle, thus creating a firm
foundation for movement into Djembe 1. All drums
supplied during class time.
Djembe 1 - Ian Dickau
This course is the natural stepping stone from “Basic
Skills”. Using the Nigerian drum language we are able
to add to our rhythmic library as we learn of down
beat, up beat and working in 4/4 time. Other instru-
ments from West Africa such as Dundun and Shekere
are introduced into this course.
Djembe 2 - Andie Shaffer/Trudy Hipwell
This course is for the drummer who is looking for the
challenge of an increased rhythm library as well as
delving into more 6/8 rhythms, multi dundun parts and
song. Bells and shekeres are incorporated into this
class to give you the feel of the West African Village.
Djembe 3/4 -Trudy Hipwell
Participants will learn drum ensemble rhythms with
traditional West African songs, as well as master drum
cues that communicate with the drummers to make
transitions that can also be incorporated with dance
accompaniment.
Performance 1 - Andie Shaffer/Quinn Davis
In this course learn traditional West African drum
rhythms and how they can be incorporated into a
Drum Ensemble, which usually consists of 3 support
drum patterns and the master drum solo. Participants
will learn to create solos for ensemble as well as how
to play the master drum cues. Throughout the year
there are numerous community performance opportu-
nities.
