    2011 Michigan Debate Institutes Frequently Asked Questions

    Top Hints for Quick Answers:

    1. Always email first([email protected]). We try veryhard to getto emailsthe same daytheyare senttous.

    What supplies should I bring? Does the institute provide anything?

    Youshould bring pens, paper, a flash/jump drive, a fan, an Ethernetcable, twin long (80 inches x 36inches)sheets, a blanket, towels, casualattire, an umbrella, apower/extension cord, alightjacket,toiletries, etc. Some studentsalso bring atub tocarryhome their evidence ifapplicable. Moststudentsalsochoose to bring alaptop. Youare NOT required to bring anysupplies, we merelyadvise youto doso.

    How will I get my evidence home?

    Dollar Bill Copying (www.dollarbillcopying.com)arrangesapickupand shipping service on thesecond tolastdayof eachcamp. Itwill be very easy foryourchild to make these arrangements. Inaddition, everystudentwillreceive an electronic version ofallofthe evidence produced bythecampthattheyattend. Ifrequested, eachstudentwillalsoreceive apapercopyofallofthe evidencethattheirlab producesaswellasacopyofall filesthatcampproduces generically.

    What is the process for admission?

    Allpeople admitted tothe MNDI orthe Classicwill be notified via e-mailin rapid fashion. Peoplewhohave applied tothe Seven WeekProgram will be admitted on arolling basis. We willsend aletterofacceptance tothe program along withinstructions forsolidifying youracceptance.

    Can you tell me the names of other people from my areaattending the camps?

    No. It'sinstitute policytokeep everyone'sinformation private.

    What forms of ID do I need to attend?

    Bring a driver'slicense orschool ID ifyouhave one. Youwill be provided a Michigan ID when youarrive.

    Registration and Fees

    Can the application fee be subtracted from the tuition or reimbursed?

    No. The fee is non-refundable.

    Can I pay part of the tuition at registration and the restat the end of the camp?

    No. Tuition in fullis due before registration.

    Can I get my deposit or tuition reimbursed if we do notattend the camp?

    Ifyoupay early deposityoucannotgetreimbursed foryour deposit. MNDI and Classic depositsarerefundable until March 1st. After March 1stNO PAYMENTS are refundable. Thisis necessarybecause we have tohire staffand reserve room space based on ourhard numbersatthispoint.

    Can I make payments with credit cards?

    Housing and Dormitory

    What size sheets do I bring? Do we need pillows? Towels?

    All bedsare twin long (80 inches x 36 inches). You mustbring yourown sheets, blankets, pillowsand towels.

    Are roommate/partner requests guaranteed?

    Yes, in mostcases. Cross-institute requestsare usually nothonored.

    Roommate and partnerrequests mustbe made in advance by bothparties via email.

    Can you tell me who my roommate is?

    No, forprivacyreasonswe cannot. Thisisan institute policy.

    Can you tell me my phone number in advance to give to my family and friends?

    No. Unfortunately, we do notknowthese numbersuntilthe camp begins.

    Studentswillreceive theirphone numbersatregistration.

    Can I requesta single, double or triple?

    Yes, butroomsare allocated on the basisofavailability.

    Can I make long distance calls from my room?

    Yes. Long distance callscan be made withacalling card.

    How safe is the dorm?

    The institute employs ResidentAdvisorstowatchthe dormitory floors every night. In addition toRAsupervision, the institute office isstaffed until 4 a.m. every nightbyan adultfrom ourstaff. TheUniversityof Michigan assignsasafetyofficertothe dormitory for nighttime supervision. We offerthe beststafftostudentratioin the entire industry.

    Is the Dorm Air Conditioned?

    No, unfortunately no dormsatthe Universityof Michigan are currentlyairconditioned. Thisisusually nota big concern asit'scoolin morningsand eveningsin Ann Arborin the summer. While itdoes gethotsometimesin the mid-afternoon, studentsare in airconditioned places during thesetimes- the library, lab rooms, lecture halls, etc.

    We encourage youto bring a fan withyoutocamp. Ifyou don't, fansare available forpurchase atnumerousstoreson campus.

    Does my University Meal Plan Include Breakfast?

    No, unfortunatelythere are no Universitycafeteriasthatserve breakfastin the summer. Onlybrunchisserved on either Saturdayor Sunday. There are severalinexpensive placesstudentscancheaplypurchase breakfasteach daythatare located close totheir dorm and classrooms. Inaddition, refrigeratorsare available forrental from the dormitoryatregistration and there aremanystoreswithin walking distance where astudentcan purchase breakfastsuppliesand food.The students

    How can I address special Dietary Needs?

    Please notifyusofthose needsin advance sowe can checkwithhousing to make sure we canaccommodate those needs. Ifyourchild needs Kosher mealsplease notifyusin advance sowe canvetitwithhousing. Vegetarian and vegan optionsare available atthe University dining halls.

    Medical Issues

    I have a special medical need, will someone help me?

    Special medical needs, suchas diabetes, are handled byourstaffand University Health Services, if

    necessary. Please letusknowin advance ofyourparticular needs. Make sure youhave notified andcleared special needswithusin advance ofthe camp.

    What if I get sick during the camp?

    Youshould immediatelytellthe people in the dormitoryoffice. Based on the time of dayand natureofthe illnessoraccidentwe will eithertake the studenttothe University Health Services Office ORtothe Emergency Room atthe Universityof Michigan Hospital (atop 20 hospitalsystem in the US).We willalwaysalso notifyparentsassoon aswe can getin touchwiththem throughthe contactinformation we are given.

    Students and Money at the Camp

    How much spending money should you bring?

    Usuallythe mostsignificantvariable is food. Studentsthatchoose notto eatin the dorm will needmore moneythan those thateatregularlyin the dorm. Bring enough moneytopurchase toiletries,orderpizza, visitPinball Pete'sand eatsome ice cream. You mightalso need to factorsuppliesintoyourcalculations. There isan ATM located inside Mary Markleyhalland severalon campus.

    How much copy money do I bring?

    Usuallyabout$100-$200.

    Do you take credit cards on registration day?

    No. Cashorcheckonlywill be accepted. Youcan pay viacreditcard in advance ofregistration.Please make sure yourcheckissigned and made payable tothe Michigan Debate Institutes.

    Are there other check-in charges?

    Yes, there isa $50 refundable room depositpaymentpayable tothe Michigan Debate Institutes dueatcheckin. Ifyourchild does notdamage the roomswe will nothold on tothe deposit. In addition,itispossible torentrefrigeratorson a firstcome firstserve basisatcheck-in throughthe dormitory(University Housing handlesthese rentals).

    Do I geta discount if I leave a few days early?

    No. We pay for mealsand dormitoryspace based on fullattendance sowe cannotoffer discountsunlessarrangementsare made substantiallyin advance.

    Are there washer and dryer facilities in the dorms?

    Yes, washing and drying eachcost$1.25 towashand $1 per dry. Please bring quarterswithyou.

    Can I rentarefrigeratorat the camp?

    Yes, the costsare $30.00 forasmall fridge and $80.00 fora microwave-fridge. Michigan Debatedoes notprofitfrom thistransaction.

    Transportation and Airport

    Studentsshould arrive between 12 Noon and 6 PM on the firstdate noted foraparticularcampanddepartbetween 8 AM and 12 PM on the final date noted forthe particularcamp.

    Will someone pick me up at the airport?

    No. Transportation from the airporttothe campusisyourresponsibility. Acab costsabout$50. Youcan make reservationswith TrinityAirportShuttle Service at(877) 284-4200. Additionalcheapand safe alternativesare Ann ArborAirportShuttle (734) 222-9400 and DetroitMetro Cars (800)456-1701.

    The only exception tothisrule isifyourchild istooyoung to be allowed offthe plane withoutanadult. Ifyourchild needsthisservice youwillhave to make directarrangementswithusatourcontactnumbersor emailaddress. There are noother exceptionstothisrule.

    How far is the airport from the campus?

    About25 minutes bycar.

    Where do I go?

    Is the airport safe?

    The DetroitMetroAirportis notlocated in downtown Detroititisin asuburb. Itisabout20 minutesoutsideofthe city nowhere nearany neighborhood thatcould be dangerous. We have had literallythousandsofstudentsin the lastseven years make their firsttripalone on aplane throughthe Detroitairportwithroundtripshuttle arrangementsand had zero mishaps.

    Recreation/Religion

    I need to work outata gym. Can I do thatat Michigan?

    We cannotprovide youwithapasstothe universityrecreation facilities because ofliabilityreasons. Thereare severaloutdoor basketballcourts, tenniscourtsand a quarter-mile running tracklocated minutes fromMary Markley Hall- http://www.recsports.umich.edu/facilities/palmeropen.htm

    Can I attend religious services while at camp?

    Yes. Students may dosowithwritten permission from theirparentsor guardians, and permission from theDirector.

    Typical Day

    What is a typical day like?

    Lecture at9:30 a.m., Libraryat1:00 p.m., and Lab at6:30 p.m.

    How much free time will we have?

    Nota greatdeal. Mostofyourtime atthe institute isstructured, even your free time. We dontbegin until 1p.m. on Sundaysand studentsreceive several morningsoffthroughoutthe camp. The institute triestoschedule variousrecreationalactivitiesaswell.

    Contacting Your Child

    How can I get in contact in an emergency?

    Moststudents dochoose to bring cellphoneswiththem. In addition tothis method, yourchild willreceive a bookthe firstdayofthe campthatincludesallofthe emergencyphone numbers (youshould contactyourchild and exchange these numbersor getthem atregistration). In addition,yourchild willhave a dormitoryphone number forthe room theyare in (youshould getthatnumberaswell). In the worstcase, youcan callthe dorm debate office (the number forthatoffice isalsoin the booksaswellason the main page ofourwebsite once the campstarts).

    How do I send mail?

    NEVER send non-paymentmailtothe 2205 Michigan Union Address.
