Welcome to this publication which will help make the most of your fi shing journey through Northwestern British Columbia.

And once again we’re pleased to show you some of the catches of the last while as provided by residents of the northwest and other places.

Northwestern B.C. is truly a fi shing paradise, regardless of what your preferred method or target catch and you’ll notice that in the pictures contained here in.

For those who like the serenity of trout fi shing, there are plenty of easily accessible lakes in the region to try your luck at. For those who enjoy the thrill and the fi ght associated with going after the big one, the region’s rivers provide ample opportunities to go after a variety of Pacifi c salmon.

And for those who want to hit the open

waters of the Pacifi c in search of salmon, halibut, lingcod, prawns or crabs, Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert and Kitimat all offer some exciting ocean fi shing opportunities and plenty of professional guides to help ensure your trip to the coast is a success.

Along with the exceptional fi shing opportunities is exceptional scenery. With bald eagles, grizzly bears, deer, gray whales, and the rare Kermode bear among the wildlife that calls the Northwest home, the opportunities to take in a unique wilderness experience is always present.

With thanksThe Terrace Standard thanks those

who provided them and we hope you’ll share the thrill of the catch as much as did those who caught the fi sh in the fi rst place.

Off the trackAs the summer approaches, it’s

important to remind people of the danger of crossing, or walking on, the train tracks to get to a desired fi shing spot on the Skeena River. It seems like the message is catching on.

Local CN enforcement offi cer Kelly Yendrys said that he’s issued tickets to fewer people than when he arrived here in 2006.

“CN is pleased to see that education and enforcement on the dangers of trespassing has resulted in a signifi cant decrease in the number of fi shermen trespassing on our right of way,” said CN public affairs offi cial Kelli Svendsen in looking at statistics gathered the past several years.

“As summer is approaching, we would like to remind the community that when people trespass on railway property, they take risks that can result in serious injuries and fatalities. CN will continue our enforcement efforts as a matter of public safety.” Yendrys patrols the area from Endako to Prince Rupert.

As angling pressures increase because of population growth, expanding recreational time and improved access to our rivers and streams, the need for courtesy and an angling code of conduct has become more evident.

“Rotation angling” is a system designed to encourage everyone on a stretch of river to fi sh sequentially through it, whether wading or from a boat. It was designed to allow each

angler an equal opportunity to spend some time in the prime pools and riffl es. Simply stated, it means starting at the head of a pool or run and following the immediate downstream angler at a courteous distance, with everyone progressing at a reasonable pace.

While rotation angling is not applicable to all waters and conditions, it has become an accepted practice on many of our Classifi ed Waters.

Courtesy and Common Sense! Enjoying the Experience.

Rotational AnglingRotational Angling

THE BASIC RULES ARE:• Avoid entering the water downstream of another angler who is already fi shing, unless invited to do so;• Leave adequate room between the down-stream angler and yourself but do not remain stationary unless no one is following you;

• After catching a fi sh, step out of the line and return to the head of the pool, or start of the line;• If you are not sure about the local etiquette, avoid any problems by fi rst inquiring about the procedures from the anglers already on the water.

NOTICE TO ANGLERS FISHING B.C.-YUKON TRANSBOUNDARY WATERS

To simplify angling and licensing regulations, and to improve fisheries management, a transboundary management agreement is in place for five lakes and two river systems which straddle the B.C.-Yukon border. The lakes are Bennett, Laidlaw, Morley, Tagish, and Teslin (not including any of their inlet or outlet streams). The rivers are the Rancheria and Swift, plus their tributaries. (NOTE: Lakes in the Rancheria and Swift watersheds are NOT included in the agreement.)

Anglers may fish any part of the affected waters with either a Yukon or British Columbia angling licence. (NOTE: A B.C. licence is required to fish the B.C. portion of Atlin Lake even though it is also a transboundary water.)

The quotas and size limits for these waters are now similar on both sides of the border, but tackle restrictions have not been amended under the agreement. Please refer to the Water-Specific Tables in Region 6 for detailed information on the daily catch quotas and possession quotas, as well as gear, method, and bait restrictions applicable to the B.C. portions of these waters. Information on quotas and tackle restrictions for the Yukon potions of the transboundary waters may be found in the Yukon regulations.

Anglers are reminded that they are entitled to only one daily quota for any given species in these waters, regardless of which side of the border the fish were taken and even if they possess both B.C. and Yukon angling licences.

Please obtain a copy of the Yukon regulations before fishing Yukon waters.

NOTICE TO ANGLERSSingle barbless hooks must be used in all Region 6 streams, all year.A “single hook” (not barbless) restriction is now under consideration for all Region 6 lakes to reduce handling time and mortality for fish being released, and to simplify the regulations. Your feedback is welcomed. Please forward comments to the Fish and Wildlife Regional Office in Smithers.

It’s no secret the Kitimat River offers some of the best fi shing in the province.

It’s also no secret we owe that to our hatchery.

That’s particularly true when it comes to steelhead.

Three years ago the provincial government introduced a ban on retaining wild steelhead.

However, you can catch and keep a hatchery fi sh - and the Kitimat is the only river in the Northwest that offers hatchery steelhead.

The Kitimat River Fish Hatchery was fi rst started in 1977 as a pilot project, located across from the Eurocan Pulp and Paper mill.

It came into being to rebuild salmon stocks, particularly chinook, which had been hard hit by overfi shing, habitat degradation and a couple of fl oods that had ravaged spawning beds.

At that time it consisted of an Atco trailer containing a few troughs and only released 50,000-150,000 fi sh a year.

Six years later a new, $10 million facility was built and now the annual release is in the millions.

At the hatchery fi ve different species

of salmonids are raised: chum, chinook, coho, cutthroat, and steelhead. Steelhead and cutthroat are actually trout, but they are sea-run trout, which means that they have the same life cycle as a salmon by going out to the ocean to mature and returning to the rivers to spawn.

Each year adult fi sh of each species are caught by angling, tangle netting or seine netting to obtain eggs and sperm.

Once the raised fi sh are ready for release - the time varies from species to species - they are taken back to the streams from which their parents were taken except for a small percentage released through a pipe directly below the hatchery.

From there, they swim out to the ocean to mature, eventually to return to the Kitimat system to start the cycle all over again.

Incidentally, while they may not be the most prized fi sh, the hatchery is top heavy on the production of chum salmon. That’s because they were historically the most numerous species in the Kitimat.

Call 250-639-9888 to see if the hatchery is offering tours again this year.

You’ll fi nd it a fascinating experience.
