Deadly conflicts around the world arefueled by a surplus of cheap weaponslike the AK-47. The easy-to-use gunsmake it simple to send kids as youngas seven to battle. Even after wars of-ficially end, if the stockpiles remain, theviolence can and often will continue.

Pictured above is the Tree of Life , asculpture made from guns used in theMozambican civil war. The guns weredestroyed through a program thatexchanged 600K weapons for tools, giving one village a tractor in exchange

for 500 guns. Although programslike this are cost effective at coolingconflict, they are underfunded.February

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

There is a reason aid groups are focusing their efforts on women and girls.

Both private and government-sponsored aid programs are finding that when women and girls are given a chance to be healthy,to learn or to earn money, they more often reinvest their gains into their families and communities. Programs that support the

health, education, employment and empowerment of women and girls begin a virtuous cycle that reduces poverty, supportsstable communities, and even encourages fair governments.

This International Women’s Day, ask your representatives in Congress to support global aid and development programs thatsupport women and girls.

Doing a lot with a little

Khadija, pictured left, lost her husband and home to the Taliban. She got a £100loan from Ariana, a microfinance program run through UKAid to start acandle-making business. She rebuilt her home and now provides for her family.

“We are dissatisfied from battle and we want more opportunities of jobs for poorpeople of Afghanistan. I want my children to be very good educated people whocan serve for their country.... 30 years of war has made Afghans very poor and they

are not able to give each other loans so this Ariana loan system really helps us a lot.”According to a 2007 study, every loan like Khadija’s creates about 1.5 new jobs inAfghanistan, showing just how far a little help can go.

These kids are survivors.

They are former child soldiers who wereforced to fight in Congo’s civil war. Kids aresometimes forced to kill their own familymembers or neighbors, so they often can’treturn to their villages. The UN and otheraid groups rescue child soldiers, and helpthem reintegrate into society. And hopefully, help break the cycle of violence.

Endre Vestvik, who took these pictures, said, “It’s amazing to meet these kids, sofull of life. Bright, funny, charming andsweet - imagining what they have justrecently experienced and been part of isimpossible. Terror, violence, death.”

In Afghanistan, aid workers defy popular notions of

what’s possible.

The National Solidarity Program, started by the Afghangovernment, supports projects that bring jobs, healthcare, and water to Afghans. They also build schools witha focus on enrolling girls. They succeed because theirprojects are community-led. The community keeps proj-ects accountable, preventing corruption and waste.

Gen. Petraeus said the US should invest 80 percent ofits resources into non-military tools like developmentand diplomacy, and only 20 percent in the military. Rightnow it’s 90 percent military and 10 percent civilian.

Above is a student in a girls’ school run by Children ofWar. Najib Aziz, the group’s founder, said, “We find thatthe girls are so passionate about learning and coming to

school—they are very serious about their education. Andthe families are highly supportive of our operations.”

Peacefully Rebuilding Iraq

In Iraq, as well as Afghanistan, a large portionof development and diplomacy is not car-ried out by aid workers and diplomats, butby soldiers. The problem is that while they

have the best intentions, soldiers are alreadyoverburdened, and they don’t have the expe-rience and resources needed for these jobs.Further complicating matters is that when USor NATO forces put their stamp on a schoolor water project, it is more likely to become atarget for attacks. This is partly why militaryleaders like Gen. Gates and Petraeus havecalled for increasing civilian resources in Iraqand Afghanistan.

Pictured here, an Iraqi girl watches through a

classroom window as US soldiers deliver newdesks to her school in Nawaful, Iraq.

Sierra Leone healing from war

Since 2002, Sierra Leone has beenrecovering from an 11-year brutalcivil war that displaced more than athird of the country’s population. Aidgroups and international institu-tions like the UN are helping in thatprocess.

A wide range of programs, includingstockpile destruction, rehabilitat-ing child soldiers, and supporting

women who were raped during thewar are helping Sierra Leone heal.

At the same time, a host of pro-grams build towards the future.Aid groups are helping communi-ties provide their youth a regularmeal, an education and preventivehealth care. They also teach farmerssustainable agriculture practices. Astheir work builds regional stability, they improve the lives of millionsand reduce the likelihood of a futurearmed conflict.

This calendar spotlights a range of proven programs that, with

the right resources, could help build a more stable and just world

while reducing conflict and war. They are all programs that need

our support, as well as the support of our political leaders.

Peace Action West advocates for these kinds of smarter

approaches to global problems. If we want to address problems

like war, poverty, global warming, terrorism – the US needs towork together, cooperatively, with other nations.

It also means overcoming the partisan politics and divisive rhetoric

that often drown out alternatives to war. By getting regular

Americans involved, we build the political will needed to break

through the deadlock.

Our success hinges on engaging average citizens in the foreign

policy decisions that impact all of us. Through Peace Action West, thousands of Americans make their voices count on matters that

shape our world.

Thank you for being one of them.
