28TH ANNUAL OYSTER FESTIVAL
By Dagmar Fors Karppi
There’s always a great story to tell about the OysterFestival Oyster Shucking and Eating Contest. Lastyear some longtime contest winners were re-
placed. You never can tell what will happen as the oystersare served up.“We never know for sure how big the oysters for the
oyster eating contest will be, but we can tell you all theoysters for the oyster shucking contest will be the samesize. They will also be the same size as the oysters we
provide to the Rotary oysterbooth,” said Dave Relyea, hatchery manager of theFrank M. Flower & Sons,Inc. shellfishers that supplythe mollusks for the festival. The Oyster Shucking and
Oyster Eating Contests, areheld annually on the mainstage on the waterfront’sWest End Avenue, Saturdaysat 2 p.m. They always at-tracts a great crowd of peo-ple who come to cheer ontheir favorite contestants. The record holder for theOyster Shucking Contest isRodney Dow of Mill Neckwho set the bar in shucking oysters at 57 in four minutes, in1985. He won after a tie with Andy Schuller of Oyster Bay– that had Rodney shuck 22 more in two minutes.Dave Relyea, said, “Usually now, the shuckers open be-
tween 30 and 40 oysters.” Mr. Relyea said, “I talked toRodney recently and he is living in eastern Long Island. He used to be a waterfowl hunter and he wanted to sellsome of his duck decoys. He is someone I know andhaven’t heard from in a long time.” Dave said he wouldinvite Rodney to this year’s event.Last year, at the 27th Oyster Festival, David Mahnken,
winner of the Oyster Shucking Contest for nine consecu-tive years was checking out the competition. Unfortunate-ly for him, he came in second last year. The winner of the 2010 Oyster Shucking Contest was
Ralph Alarcon of Oyster Bay, who shucked 37 oysters. He has been coming in second for several festivals and fi-nally shucked his way to the top. David Mahnken ofMelville came in second with 33.
Oyster EatingLongtime Oyster Festival oyster eating champ Michael
Chodkowski of Hicksville who won for nine years in arow, was a no-show at the 2010 festival. Instead, ShawnLeonard of Cold Spring Harbor won his third title. Hejoined the contest after his relative David Leonard won in1998 and Shawn has been carrying on the family traditionsince. In 1998, David Leonard of Central Islip set the oys-ter eating record at 480 oysters eaten. They were smallthat year, said Mr. Relyea. The oyster-eating contest winner in 2010 was Shawn
Leonard of Cold Spring Harbor who ate 144 oysters; hebeat out Bruce Gordon of Plainview who ate 84.Come see the contest and join the cheers to “chug,
chug, chug.” The oyster eaters are a hardy breed andchug, rather than eat, their oysters. It’s all in fun andfor a good cause for the annual Oyster Festival thatis the major fundraiser that supports over 35 localcharities.

The Oyster Shucking contestants setting up their areas just before the four minutecountdown begins. The record holder is Rodney Dow of Mill Neck who set the barfor shucking oysters – at 57 in 1985.
Oyster Easting contestants are holding up their firstround of 36 oysters to slurp out of the metal plates.Next come the cups with 12 each. The record was setin 1998, by David Leonard of Central Islip with 480oysters eaten. They were small that year.

OYSTER FESTIVAL – ANTON COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS – OCTOBER 2011 13
Locust Valley, New York is nestled prominently on the North Shore of Long Island in the Town of Oyster Bay. This quaint, unincorporated hamlet is just one square mile in size but is rich in history and is one of the Gold Coast’s best-kept secrets.
Today, Locust Valley remains a community of individual shops where within walking distance, one may nd an astonishing variety of goods including: antiques, jewelry, clothing, toys, books, furniture and home decor, art galleries, ne foods and spirits and much more. The merchants treat their customers like friends; the welcoming atmosphere and charm keep people coming back for more.
It may be one of the best-kept secrets but we love sharing it with you. The Board of Directors and the Members of the Locust Valley Chamber of Commerce welcome you!
