ABOUT LGLOS GATOS LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

LG Lifestyle Magazine is a family operated company dedicated to building

community and connecting people, businesses, organizations and schools

in Los Gatos.

MISSION STATEMENTLG Magazine provides a close-up of the

residents, businesses, and history throughout Los Gatos. Our positive presentation of the people,

schools, organizations and businesses here, details the pride, integrity and passionate

spirit of this engaging, diverse community and its charming natural ambiance.

Energized after the long holiday season, it is time to focus on the New Year,

improvement, and as my son calls it, the pursuit of happiness. I think putting some effort into improving organization and improving your health and fitness can save time by making your schedule more efficient and increase pleasure in your life because being active on a regular basis improves your health. This accomplishment will allow you to spend more time on emotionally beneficial tasks. If it isn’t apparent, I took a yoga class recently and enjoyed the philosophy and focus on breathing techniques and self-improvement. I truly feel it is important to constantly audit your exercise regimen and try new programs – I usually prefer Zumba, but am considering expanding my horizons. Email to let me know

your favorite mode of exercise and we will include some snippets and photos in a future issue. I have a busy schedule, so if you have contacted me in the past, don’t hesitate to stay in touch, as I value your input. This is our third issue of LG Magazine, so we have only just begun! In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the current Heroes, Leaders, LG Spotlight, and Home & Hearth featured in this issue. It was truly a pleasure to work with all involved.

If you are interested in helping out some local individuals or just supporting some fundraisers, please attend the following events if your schedule permits: the Jr. League Rummage Sale at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds; and the Jackapalooza “Band Together” fundraiser at the Silver Creek Country Club, featuring some of the Bay Areas best musicians, and including a silent and live auction. There is more information included in their ads on page 8 and you can learn about Jack’s music at www.jackaknin.com. The family of stroke victim Kathee Tomasello has also setup a website for donations and to announce upcoming fundraisers at www.kathee.bbnow.org. Your assistance there, great or small, will go a long way with the family as Kathee recently lost her son Rory in a car accident prior to experiencing the stroke. I hope you enjoyed a memorable holiday season and were able to be around caring family members and friends. Our holidays were filled with love and happiness and I am thankful for that, and we had a great time ringing in the New Year. I now look forward to seeing what is in store for 2011, for as they say, “The best is yet to come!” Read the Save the Date (p19) calendar if you are interested in getting involved in the first of the 2011 local events, and don’t hesitate to send me items to add in the future issue. If you are a business owner, I also would love to hear from you if interested in advertising to support this magazine, the charities and events we support, while at the same time, promoting your business.

Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Chief of Police, Scott Seaman

POINTS OF PRIDE

Derksen

Chief Seaman was clearly honored by the opportunity to serve Los Gatos and Monte Sereno and still feels the same as he nears his first decade with this department. The Los Gatos/Monte Sereno police department has 41 police officers (as compared to more than 1,300 in the SJPD when he left) and 18 civilians. I was interested in the difference between LGMSPD and SJPD, as they are both full service law enforcement agencies. One unique element is the contract services the LGMSPD has provided to Monte Sereno for the past 15 years. While smaller in size, the department is still able to provide a high level of service to residents. It emphasizes working with the community to prevent crime and officers use free time to proactively seek out criminal activity. Through their efforts, the officers frequently interrupt attempted crime, and the department has an excellent record solving cases. “The size, pace and intensity of activity differentiate the two departments, but we still experience all manner of crime and disorder as other larger communities,” adds Chief Seaman. “Because of the small town nature and emphasis on quality of life and quality of service, our department has a better connection to the community than was possible in San Jose.” The department enjoys a high level of community and Town Council support. “When I was hired, I was asked to focus on connecting the department to the community and that investment has paid huge dividends for the department and the Town,” Chief Seaman said.

Y ou’re in good hands is exactly what came to mind when I met the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Chief of Police, Scott Seaman, with 35 years in law enforcement, whose territory includes about 30,000 Los Gatos and

3,000 Monte Sereno residents. The Police Chief cares about and encourages his force to meet each Los Gatos resident, as they all are important to him and that trait extends throughout the department, and to their extended team that includes community volunteers. Not only is the seasoned Chief Seaman’s competent leadership apparent in the structured, nurturing community programs they have created for seniors, schools, new neighbors and patrolling, but also in the large number of volunteers the department attracts. It was a pleasure to meet the friendly yet serious, award-winning Chief Scott Seaman, learn his background and the characteristics and positive direction of the department. Chief Seaman grew up locally in Los Altos and Cupertino, gaining his degree in criminology at UC Berkley. In 1975 he became an officer in the San Jose Police Department, working his way up to Sergeant, Lieutenant, and then Captain. While at San Jose, Chief Seaman attended the FBI National Academy and the California Law Enforcement Command College. In 2002, Seaman competed among 55 candidates for the Los Gatos Chief of Police position. Debra Figone was town manager at the time and was part of the selection process, as they narrowed it down. Seaman believes the breadth of his experience from the San Jose police department was important in his ultimate selection as chief.

Page 7: 2011, New Year Issue, LG Magazine

A creative program provides officers with Coldstone ice cream certificates which they can give to kids who wear a helmet while riding a bike or skateboard. This allows officers a unique opportunity to have a positive interaction with kids.

There are 45 volunteers in the department with important tasks that collectively contribute to making this community shine. The volunteers in the community (and they are always willing to accept more) make a huge difference, allowing personalization of service. When a community member is on vacation, for instance, the volunteers will check on their house every day. Two volunteers wearing a semi-official uniform, and occasionally an officer, visit new homebuyers to personally welcome each one when they move into the community. I can’t say I have ever heard of such personal treatment and strategically this small deed can go a long way. During the last 2 and a half years, these volunteers have visited over 600 homes. The department’s ultimate goal is to “know everyone in the community.” Another program they offer is V.I.P. (Volunteers in Policing). About ten community patrol volunteers in marked volunteer vehicles monitor suspicious activity, enforce handicap parking, perform the above mentioned vacation checks, and extend the presence of the department to the community. One volunteer walks and provides vigilance on the main hiking trail everyday. (This efficiently operating volunteer crew, allows the LGMSPD to provide these services that they would otherwise not be able to provide.) Civilian volunteers are also identified throughout the area for emergency preparedness in the Disaster Aid Response Team (DART), and ARES/RACES. They occasionally use services from individuals with a specialized technical skill for water search and rescue, first aid, atv searches, and emergency communications. Additionally, they have developed a 2nd level community emergency response team (CERT) that trains individuals to help themselves and their neighbors during the initial stages of a disaster. These programs help the Town’s Los Gatos Prepared program meet a goal to have every resident be self-sufficient for the first 3 days of any emergency, whether to do with hillside fires, Lexington Dam problems, earthquakes or even homeland security threats.

Now, between emergency calls, my favorite service the non-uniformed dispatchers provide is to phone seven to eight seniors in the community every morning to make sure they are okay. A few times this proactive outreach program has found victims hurt from a fall and the dispatchers were able to send aid. Without this service, no one would have known that these seniors were in danger. The response to these smaller, ‘quality of life’ calls reflect the department’s commitment to high service, consistent with the Town’s commitment to small town service. Even small problems are taken seriously; for instance, a car break-in, barking dog, noisy neighbor, or suspicious activity actually generates a police visit. This story continues next page

Chief Seaman attributes part of the department’s success to a strong Police Foundation which raises $60,000-$70,000/year from its members and a yearly signature event named “Taste of Los Gatos,” which allows guests to enjoy delectable tastes from over 20 local restaurants and wineries. The foundation’s support has allowed the department to fund police and community programs, such as a bbq lunch for Fisher Middle School students where they get to meet and interact with police officers. Another creative program provides officers with Coldstone ice cream certificates which they can give to kids who wear a helmet while riding a bike or skateboard. This allows officers a unique opportunity to have a positive interaction with kids. Some of the kids know and like this program so much that they now point at their helmets when they see a police officer, in hopes of getting a coupon!

Los Gatos is a beautiful community yet there is still crime and disorder. Public safety issues include violent and other serious crimes, although at lower levels than many other communities. More common are family domestic violence, alcohol and drug related offenses, burglary and vehicle theft, mental illness, and forgery, theft & identity theft. The department has specially trained officers to allow it to better manage challenging calls involving mental illness. Recently, Seaman recalls, “we were able to manage a crisis when we received a dispatch call regarding a man with an illness armed with 2 swords which ended peacefully but might otherwise have ended tragically.” While violent crime occurs less frequently, the department was challenged in 2008 with a sensational 5-person “murder-for-hire” case. While departments might try to solve a case such as this with their own resources, Chief Seaman was quick to state he asked for help from other local departments. A task force was formed which solved the case within two weeks. The case was recently successfully prosecuted by the newly elected District Attorney, Jeff Rosen. For its work, the department received the State of California Investigative Excellence award and was recognized as one of the top 15 investigations by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. The department has received three other state and international awards for community policing during his tenure.

The LGPD continues to strengthen the community, make residents feel welcome, and try to proactively minimize teen drug and alcohol use. The Chief says, “When are we done? Never, there is always room for improvement.” This philosophy makes sense and is practiced daily. Chief Seaman once again informed me he is honored to be chief of such a professional and caring department which serves the community mindful of the trust the community gives the department to keep it safe. “We owe the community our respect for letting us be their police and we see ourselves as part of the community. Our individual actions and programs are points of pride for the department and the community.” LG

The Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Foundation provides resources that are not readily

available through other means and serves as a vehicle for tax-exempt donations from individuals and businesses for operational support equipment, investigative tools, and educational outreach. The foundation provides funds for programs including the child helmet program where kids are rewarded with coupons for free ice cream for wearing helmets when riding bikes and skateboards; the “Cops and Kids” barbeque at Fischer Middle School where police officers and foundation members serve up lunch to the entire student body; the purchase of the police dog, Berko, all of his training, and items such as his bullet proof vest. The foundation also funds hard hitting equipment that has been used to put the bad guys away. Night vision equipment mounted in the patrol cars, remote tracking devices, undercover wire listening gear; these tools and others funded by the foundation have been used in recent cases to capture and convict criminals. By joining the foundation, members assist in maintaining the high quality of life and the low crime rate enjoyed in the Los Gatos and Monte Sereno community. There are many benefits to membership including unparalleled access to the inner workings of the department. The foundation hosts events that allow members to spend time interacting with officers and department leadership. The foundation also hosts “behind the scenes” events that allow members to gain a deeper understanding of police processes and hands-on experience with police tools. Members receive invitations to the foundation’s annual fundraiser, A Taste of Los Gatos, which has become one of the high points of the local social calendar.

Membership in the foundation is more than an investment in public safety, it strengthens the relationship between the police and the public. Those interested in joining the foundation or learning more can visit www.lgmspolicefoundation.org or calling (408) 354-6840, or contacting the foundation president, Jonathan Knowles at [email protected].

What’s in a Name: Case emphasizes Design.

Pictured above: CASE Designer, Ramona Tan— along with numerous design/build projects completed throughout 2010.

After six years of success in the South Bay as a premier remodeler, Case Handyman and Remodeling is changing their name. The Almaden Valley based, full-service remodeler is now known as Case Design/Remodeling

reflecting a continuing emphasis on design. Why the change? Owner, Jim Kabel, a NARI Certified Remodeler, says it is a matter of perception. “We’ve built a great name for ourselves in the professional handyman services arena having earned Diamond Certification and Angie’s List Super Service recognition for the past five years,” says Jim. “We have very loyal clients that hire us for home repairs several times a year. But we also have an incredible group of delighted remodeling clients with projects ranging from bathroom and kitchen remodels to ‘whole house’ renovations and additions, completely designed and built by our team.” Case invested in design capability after only one year in business. Jim adds, “It was clear that to deliver anything more than a simple ‘pull and replace’ bathroom, we needed to help homeowners visualize the possibilities by presenting options for both layout and final design details. Initially, we did this through a combination of in-house and partner-provided design resources. It soon became clear we could make this easier for our clients through a one-stop, design-build business model.” Enter Ramona Tan, the Case in-house Project Designer who joined December 2007. Ramona is a degreed, certified interior designer with experience in designing model homes and custom furniture. She also has earned a CAPS

certification in Universal Design from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Says Jim, “Ramona is the perfect designer for our company. She is exceptional at not only space planning and layout but is very knowledgeable about the pros and cons of different fixtures, finishes, and soft-treatments for a wide range of client needs. She produces all our final Computer Aided Design system drawings to document details for the building department, our team, our partners, and most importantly, the homeowner.” Design/build means Case can help a client create design options for a project within a specified budget range and know precisely what the construction costs will be before committing to build. The other big benefits are a faster design cycle and a single point of ownership to ensure the project starts and completes on time. As a design/build remodeler, Case San Jose has been even more highly recognized: Eleven NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) design awards in the past 5 years, a Guild Quality GuildMaster award for quality and customer satisfaction, Top 500 recognition from Qualified Remodeler Magazine for the past 4 years, and induction into Remodeling Magazine’s Big 50 in 2010 as one of 50 US companies recognized each year for their excellence in a number of operational areas. So what happens to the Case “Handyman” business? “Not a thing”, says Jim. “We love doing small projects for our homeowner clients and we’ll continue to do so as a key part of our business. Case can be your one-stop source for a variety of home repair and remodeling projects. No job is too big or too small.”

14 LGLEADERS

LGAlmaden Lifestyle Magazine Los Gatos Lifestyle Magazine

When I attended my first IMPOWER luncheon at La Rinconada Country Club, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I knew from the dynamic list of energetic women involved on the board, that it would

be worthwhile and I was pleasantly pleased the moment I walked in. After being warmly greeted at the registration table and receiving a nametag, I was quickly joined by a group of business women and we immediately introduced ourselves and shared our professional backgrounds. We talked for awhile then I found myself with a new group sharing similar exchanges. It was a pleasure to meet with other female business owners and executives, as well as, revisit with past acquaintances. The guest list included women who impact the community through their profession, volunteer interests, or philanthropic contributions. The guest of honor speaking later that day, was Jan Morini. Jan and several of her employees were present looking every bit of fantastic, mingling happily with the IMPOWER board and others. Jan Morini spoke of her challenging upbringing and how her Mother persevered regardless, as did Jan herself, in suit. It was enjoyable and inspiring to listen while we were seated enjoying light fare. I was aware of IMPOWER, but the organization was relatively new to me and therefore, I wanted to find out a more about this organization including their charter, history and board.

IMPOWER’s direction is to provide the opportunity for women to congregate, learn, inspire and to change lives within their community. The plan to accomplish this in Los Gatos, involves gathering like-minded businesswomen, non-profit members, along with women involved in volunteerism and philanthropy, in an effort to

share knowledge and identify true areas of need. Additionally, IMPOWER wants to develop leadership opportunities for women. At the same time, the group fundraises for the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce’ Charitable Foundation (LGCCCF). This provides greater exposure for the Chamber, while helping women network and develop, as the Chamber is directly linked to IMPOWER. Although new to Los Gatos, IMPOWER programs are established and exist successfully in Salinas and Santa Cruz. Locally, IMPOWER is a joint venture between the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce and Comerica Bank, a Chamber member. Comerica created a special

task force in 2006 to focus on women and IMPOWER branched from there. The Los Gatos chapter was created more recently. The Los Gatos IMPOWER program is designed to center around three annual luncheon events using leveraged and pooled resources to increase community excitement, commitment and involvement in the Chamber, networking, and philanthropy. There are nine committee members, all of which are members of the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce, including

Debbie Lee-Kavousi, Susan Siravo and Cheryl Wong from Comerica Bank; Bella Babot from Harrell Remodeling; Patti Rice from The Spa-Los Gatos; Margaret Smith from Domus; Janice McCabe from Janice McCabe Interiors; Pamela Snowden-Abella from Heritage Bank; and Ronee Nassi from the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce.

When asked “why are you involved on a personal level?” Bella Babot answered, “We use this quote from Anne Frank as our motto, [“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” Working on IMPOWER gives each of us on the committee that moment. It is rewarding on two levels - to be working with a committed group of amazing women who want to give back to our community, and having the opportunity to meet our speakers who have been motivating and inspiring.” The entire committee actively plans the events, which accommodate up to 150 attendees and are currently working on their first 2011 luncheon, which will feature Roya Hosseini, co-founder of the Khaled Hosseini Foundation (Started by her husband Khaled, author of The Kite Runner & A Thousand Splendid Suns.). Mark your calendars for March 2nd. Contact IMPOWER or visit the chamber website for tickets to this luncheon at La Rinconada Country Club, 11:30PM-1:30PM. More events will follow in August and November. IMPOWER provided funds to the LGCCCF allowing three ‘business’ concentrated educational scholarships to be granted to Los Gatos High School students, and IMPOWER is currently considering supporting the launch of the new Los Gatos Public Library.

NuSilkServicesRevLITE LaserSkin rejuvenationThe laser works by stimulating collagen production. As the new collagen is generated, lines and wrinkles are decreased. This procedure results in a refreshed appearance, smoother skin texture, an even skin tone and decrease in pore size. Those with difficult acne scarring will notice a marked improvement.

Tattoo/Mole/Hair removalTattoo ink is removed by specific wavelength of light which passes into the skin, but is absorbed by the ink. The laser provides maximum tattoo removal while leaving the surrounding skin unharmed.

Birthmarks removalThe laser removes these pigments with the energy of light. The specialized light produced by the Revlite laser is absorbed by the pigmented lesion.

SmartlipoThis laser — Assisted lipolysis procedure is performed using a one millimeter cannula (or tube) inserted into the skin. A laser fiber inside of the cannula delivers energy directly to fat cells, causing them to rupture and drain away as liquid. Simultaneously, tissue around the area coagulates resulting in overall tighter skin tissue. Laser Body Sculpting is ideal for the neck, jawline, arms, “Bra Fat”, abdomen, “Love handles”, “Saddle Bags”,inner and outer thighs.

Laser vein treatmentA cosmetic laser emits a prescribed dose of energy to the vein. The laser “selectively” targets the problem veins while sparing surrounding areas. After treatment, the vessel will naturally disappear.

DermafillersArtefillThe longer lasting solution for wrinkle correction.

RadiesseA wrinkle filler’s unique formulation stimulates Collagenesis– the production of new collagen– which results in increased volume for natural looking wrinkle correction that may last a year or more in many patients.

Restylane/PerlaneRestylane and Perlane are both composed of Hyaluronic Acid that provides rejuvenating cosmetic beauty treatment for a natural, younger look.

SilkPeel servicesThe SilkPeel system delivers a combination therapy, which simultaneously provides polishing, vacuum massage and DermalInfusion. This unique combination addresses the underlying cellular processes that bring about skin imperfections in many areas of the body. Great for Hper-keratosis and Psoriasis.

Botox cosmetic servicesBotox is a purified protein that works by blocking overactive nerve impulses that trigger excessive muscle contractions or glandular activity. The effect is temporary and will last approximately one to six months.

Non-Invasive body contouringThe EndyMed PRO® provides targeted, deep dermal heating and collagen remodeling without discomfort for aesthetic applications, such as skin tightening, body contouring and wrinkle reduction.

Hello Everyone! We are so excited to now offer a safe and comfortable skin tightening and body contouring procedure. Nusilk Med Spa is now offering the 5th generation of Radiofrequency (RF).

10 years ago, I was involved in a study for one of the first RF technologies. Although it was somewhat effective, it was painful with sporadic results. The first generation of RF emitters had inconsistent heating. This was painful, and sometimes caused blistering or indents from burning non-intended tissue. Like all technologies, there were some bugs to work through over the last decade, and happily I now stand behind this technology. The 5th generation of this RF technology really hits the mark of efficiency and safety. RF is an advanced technology that safely heats the collagen in the skin. When consistent energy is delivered, collagen in the body will contract, providing a tightening of skin in areas that have lost their elasticity from various reasons including aging, stretching from weight gain, or even pregnancy. In addition, it helps regenerate new collagen resulting in tighter and a more youthful skin appearance. Unlike other light/laser-based therapies, RF is able to penetrate deeper into the skin and is not affected by skin color. The consistent and controlled heat results in a tighter skin surface, breaking up uneven areas and shrinking excess tissue. It can contour those stubborn areas that won’t budge no matter how much we exercise. Although, these treatments will benefit most everyone, it is not the best option for those with excessive skin laxity or fat that would be best treated with surgical improvements such as tucks and liposuction. 3 DEEP skin tightening is great on those trouble areas of the face, neck, arms and knees. It tightens the laxity of the skin which improves one’s skin texture greatly. It can reduce the overall size of any area being treated. 3 DEEP body contouring reduces the volume, shape and circumference of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. The consistent heat is very comfortable and the client has no downtime. Your skin may be slightly pink but this fades quickly. You will see some results immediately and continued improvements over time. Most areas require 3-6 treatments. Throughout the years, I have worked with and studied a number of crazy technologies. My favorite was one that looked like a hair dryer from outer space that was supposed to grow hair. My colleagues affectionately named it the “chia pet” chair (no, it didn’t work). So, I am very hesitant to recommend anything that has not proven to be effective. This treatment is very effective. I can honestly say that I was initially skeptical because there was no pain. In “the olden days,” if it didn’t hurt it didn’t work. However my jowls tell a different story. I am very excited to be able to offer this amazing treatment. All consultations are complementary. Come see if this is the right choice for you. — Kimberly Schubert RN
