ISO 9001 Registered Firm

File No. A4310

Benefit from LION’s Quality ProcessThroughout its 100-year plus history, LION has dedicated itself to providing quality products and services to its valued customers. Quality doesn’t just happen by talking about it — it takes quality people using a quality process. That’s why LION went through the expense and effort to become ISO 9001 registered and to maintain that certification.

A Real Commitment to Quality Products and ServicesWhat does ISO 9001 registration mean? ISO is short for the International Organization for Standardization. It promotes the development of standards, testing and certification to encourage the real commitment to quality products and services. In order for a company to become registered as an ISO 9001-compliant firm, it must pass a strict evaluation of its product development, manufacturing, quality and documentation processes by a qualified independent third-party registrar. It is analogous to Underwriters Laboratory certifying the performance of protective clothing to NFPA Standards. Registration certifies compliance to the quality process based on observed evidence as opposed to the performance testing of a garment. The audits are rigorous, inflexible and are conducted on a “follow-up” inspection basis, as well.

Consistency and Reliability in Every StepISO 9001 registration is proof-positive that LION is committed to continuous improvement of all procedures relating to meeting customer expectations. The process requires LION to formalize and document each and every step by which they design and manufacture protective clothing, and the processes used to respond to complaints, questions, suggestions and ... of course ... the occasional error. The result is consistency and reliability in every step of the manufacturing process of protective clothing. Each garment is cut and sewn the same way and the customer gets the same product regardless of who performed the work.

Responsive to Customer ConcernsBecause it covers the design process, ISO 9001 is a more stringent registration. It requires the manufacturer to listen to customer feedback and take action. LION has a Quality Review Board that meets regularly to formally review customer feedback. A team member is assigned the responsibility of investigating the concern or suggestion from a customer and recommending a course of corrective action.

The process also requires LION’s suppliers to be accountable by documenting their quality criteria and the corrective actions taken in case a material or product fails the criteria.

Online Warranty RegistrationTaking advantage of warranty protection has never been easier! You can register your LION PPE purchases quickly and easily over the internet at http://www.lionprotects.com. Just go to the Care and Use link for the product you are registering. The short online form also gives you the opportunity to give valuable feedback about the quality of our products and service.

We solicited feedback via warranty registration cards long before our certification to ISO 9001 required us to do so. While the warranty registration cards fulfilled our ISO requirement, you had to fill out the card by hand and mail it back to us. We believe that you will find online registration more convenient.

Your feedback helps us to deliver LION Janesville® turnouts that are the best in comfort, safety and durability.

Every Move You MakeGame-changing safety and comfort

Comfort isn’t just a subjective opinion. Much of it is science and quantifi able. Garment design, working weight and the ability to manage the moisture inside your protective envelope are all factors that contribute to the comfort of your turnout gear.

Water Inside Your Protective Envelope Increases RiskWhen water collects in your turnout clothing, it gets heavier and uncomfortable. This increases stress. Water also displaces the insulating air in your thermal barrier. Once in your system, water can expand at an explosive rate, making you vulnerable to steam burns and serious injury.

Manage the Moisture in Your Turnout with isodri® TechnologyLION's exclusive isodri® technology is an engineered system that manages moisture through a combination of materials that block outside sourced water, wick perspiration off the body and resist storing water inside the protective envelope. The insulating layers and outer shell of an isodri® system are molecularly bonded with DuPont’s Tefl on® F to restrict the absorption of moisture and keep the protective layer of air intact. (Visit www.lionprotects.com, watch the video and learn why every fi re fi ghter deserves dry gear.)

No Compromises when it Comes to SafetyLION and cutting-edge safety are synonymous. For decades, LION has been the industry leader in the fi ght against fi re fi ghter stress by incorporating innovative design features and materials to deliver the most natural, least restrictive movement possible. We are the innovator of dozens of meaningful patents, including:

• isodri® Protective Systems.

• Flame-resistant, closed-cell cushioning and reinforcements.

• AraFlo® apertured thermal liners.

• Integrated lumbar support.

• Freedom® mobility system.

• V-Fit™ Design.

V-Force® CoatsJust as NASA technology advancements were transitioned into ground breaking protective clothing improvements in the 1970s, LION Janesville’s V-Force® turnout gear has embraced innovations from today’s military and sports clothing. The result is an intricate set of turnout gear that is designed to fl ex and bend like the human body.

Maximum Comfort — the Diff erence is in the DetailsThe V-Force® Coat is more comfortable than common fi refi ghting coats because it’s cut much diff erent. The seams are not at the shoulders and sides, but at the back. This signifi cantly reduces hem rise when you’re extending your arms. It also prevents SCBA straps from pushing seams into your body and causing discomfort. Fitted side panels provide a more tailored fi t and better mobility.

Natural Arm MovementThe contoured raglan sleeves have a natural shaping. This combines with the V-Fit™ Elbow to promote free and easy movement. The elbow is made up of cutouts, shaped pieces and darts. This reduces bunching and the overall working weight of the coat.

The elbow reinforcements are notched to give you superior thermal and moisture protection without impeding movement. The coat's cuff s extend over the back of your hand for additional thermal protection when reaching or pulling.

Reduced Working WeightNo detail has been overlooked. The collar and throat tab (optional) are angled for comfort and to interface perfectly with your SCBA mask. The streamlined storm fl ap reduces thermal buildup and the coat’s working weight.

Freedom® Design FeaturesLION Janesville’s Freedom® Design reduces fire fighter stress through a series of innovative, ergonomic features that help deliver exceptional mobility and comfort.

Bellows underarm construction — Underarm bellows keep your protective envelope intact by reducing hem rise and sleeve travel. Football-shaped bellows are located in the armpits of the coat between the shoulder seam and torso on all three layers (outer shell, moisture barrier and thermal barrier). When you reach forward or overhead, the bellows expand. The expansion keeps other parts of the coat, such as the sleeve and body, from traveling and creating exposure.

Freedom® Elbow — The Freedom® Elbow enables you to bend your arm freely and comfortably while keeping your wrists protected. It works in a similar fashion to the bellows underarm construction. A football-shaped insert is set at the back of the elbow. When your arm flexes, the insert expands to eliminate tugging at the sleeve or shoulder.

Radial inseam and banded crotch — The elimination of crotch seams reduces tension to give added comfort to your turnout gear. On LION Janesville® pants, a banded insert runs continuously from the top of the knee of one leg, through the crotch and to the top of the opposite knee. In addition to extending the useful life of your pants, it also provides a more comfortable fit. Increased leg circumference increases mobility.

Freedom® Knee — The Freedom® Knee enables a natural flexing motion. It provides a gusset that the knee can fall into when crawling, climbing, bending, kneeling, etc. For added thermal protection, an additional layer of Lite-N-Dri™ cushioning is sewn into the liner at the knee. The padding provided by Lite-N-Dri™ also adds comfort when kneeling or crawling.

Keep the Wet Stuff on the Red Stuff Water is the fi re fi ghter’s best friend … or at least the best tool. It puts out fi res by replacing the air source. No oxygen = no combustion … sounds great!

But when water replaces the air in your turnouts, gloves or boots, bad things happen. They get heavier, and that’s uncomfortable, but the bigger problem is having water instead of air in your PPE. That’s a matter of safety!

Water Expands at Explosive RatesWhile the outer shell, moisture barrier and impermeable reinforcements help keep water from external sources out of your protective envelope; the thermal barrier can act like a sponge, absorbing perspiration. That’s dangerous because water conducts heat 21 times faster than air at a temperature as low as 200° F. And, water can expand at explosive rates when heated (about 1700% the rate of air when the water is in a vaporous state).

Water Compromises Your ProtectionIt’s obvious that many scald burns are from wearing wet gear in hot places. But a lot of plain old contact and compression burns are made worse by water compromising your protection. A burn injury can happen very quickly when water is the conductor, usually without warning. Gear that’s thoroughly soaked will sometimes take longer to heat up than dry gear, but that makes the protection less predictable.

isodri® is at the Heart of Moisture ManagementThere is no raw material that inherently manages moisture. That’s why LION designs protective systems engineered to keep external moisture out and transport moisture generated by the body away from the skin to the garment’s outer surfaces.

The key player in these systems is isodri® technology. isodri® liner systems are engineered to reduce water inside your thermal barrier and, therefore, the heat storage capacity of your turnouts.

Four Unique isodri® SystemsThere are four unique isodri® liner systems available on LION Janesville® turnouts. Which liner system is best for you? That decision is infl uenced by your climate, number and types of calls and your fi reground operations. The accompanying chart rates performance factors of each isodri® liner system and should be helpful in identifying which will work best for your department’s unique comfort and protection needs.

Moisture Management SystemsSuperior moisture management means optimum comfort and thermal protection

isodri® Protective Systems fights the proven problems of wet turnout gear by delivering a superior moisture management solution. Each and every isodri® component is engineered to reduce the water intake and transport moisture away from the body. This reduces the heat storage capacity and working weight, promoting both comfort and safety of your protective ensemble.

Unlike conventional turnouts, keeping moisture out of the protective envelope takes place in all layers of the isodri® system — the outer shell, moisture barrier and thermal liner.

Thermal Liners Perform Better When DryEvery fire fighter knows that heated water is volatile and can release explosive energy in the form of dangerous steam. But water can, and frequently does, cause burn injuries without warning at temperatures well below steam conditions.

isodri® Technology Delivers Optimum Moisture Management

www.lionprotects.com 19

The key difference between isodri® Protective Systems and other systems is isodri’s ability to manage moisture in the thermal barrier of your turnout gear. The thermal liner operates like the insulation in your house — it traps air inside of millions of tiny pockets. The trapped air creates a barrier to heat flow. If the air pockets are compressed or filled with moisture, the thermal liner’s ability to block heat is compromised.

Optimum moisture management comes from a thermal liner that both wicks and sheds water. isodri® Protective Systems feature face cloth options with advanced wicking technologies for superior comfort and safety. By pulling sweat from undergarments, the moisture is channeled away from the body toward layers of the liner system that refuse to draw in moisture. This allows the thermal barrier to maintain airspace and function as designed.

In addition, isodri® thermal liners using apertured AraFlo® promote higher air permeability than other systems and complement state-of-the-art moisture barriers such as CROSSTECH® black moisture barriers.

Page 22: 2011 Lion Catalog

How isodri® Worksisodri® is more than just an outer shell that resists water penetration and absorption. It is a complete system of components (outer shell, moisture barrier, thermal barrier and wristlets) that works together to reduce the water in your turnout gear and the dangers that water presents.

Outer shell is treated with Teflon® F-PPE to reduce moisture intake from outside sources such as hose water and rain.

W.L. Gore CROSSTECH® black, CROSSTECH® 3 Layer or RT7100™ moisture barrier allows body heat, in the form of vapor, to escape, but keeps liquid out.

Thermal barrier is treated with Teflon® F to shed moisture generated by the body and maintain high thermal performance. AraFlo® promotes air permeability to allow vapor released by the body to be more easily transported away from the skin.

Face cloth wicks perspiration away from the body.

When you’re wearing SCBA and dragging a fully charged 1 3/4" hose line, the last thing you need is your gear sucking up water and adding more weight to what you’re already lugging around. Because isodri® Protective Systems sheds water, you’re working lighter and more comfortably.

And, how many times have you had to work in wet and clammy turnout gear because it hadn’t dried from an earlier run? Fire fi ghters wearing gear with isodri® Protective Systems report their gear has been dry and comfortable in less than 30 minutes.

Air Layers and Thermal BarriersThe ideal thermal insulation system is comfortable, lightweight, captures air and rejects water absorption while promoting the “wicking” of sweat. The best liners also withstand the eff ects of heat and have high porosity or air permeability.

The protective value of the fabric composite is really found in the air that’s between the fi re fi ghter and the heat source. Air itself is the greatest single source of the insulative qualities in protective clothing. Best of all, it weighs nothing and it’s free! The most functional way to achieve the best protection is to use a multi-layer confi guration in which each layer accomplishes part of the job. Extremely effi cient insulation can be gained by creating very thin air spaces between the layers, which supplement the air contained within the layers. It’s important that none of these individual air spaces exceed 1.8 cm of thickness, because convective currents start beyond that thickness and may begin to quickly transmit heat. Similarly, air layers that are replaced by water can be unpredictably dangerous. Unlike air, water is an amazing conductor of heat.

Thermal barrier systems with the most air spaces can:

Create the most layers of air.•

Resist absorption (water replacement of the • insulating air).

Provide the most reliable protection.•

The Face Cloth Can Make a Big DifferenceAnother important consideration for thermal barriers relates to comfort and mobility. It is now widely recognized that thermal barriers which use slippery yarns on the “face cloth” next to the wearer are far less likely to bind and restrict the fi re fi ghter’s movement. The super-strong fi lament yarns which create this lubricity are also excellent at wicking perspiration away from the body.

The part of your liner that you can usually see is the “face cloth”. The face cloth is generally the muscle, while the inside of your thermal barrier is the brain. Face cloths that “wick” perspiration off the body are more comfortable and some face cloths have the added advantage of being slippery. Liner systems using high-lubricity face cloths can reduce the strain of moving around and have been proven to be eff ective in reducing stress (IAFF/Indianapolis FD Study, 1999). Not all shiny liners have high lubricity.

Batting, Non-Woven or Combination Liners?Spunlace, such as Nomex® E89™, is a non-woven material of nominally consistent weight and thickness. A signifi cant portion of the insulating value of non-woven liners comes from the air space between the layers. Non-woven liner systems usually have multiple layers of insulative fabrics. AraFlo® is an engineered development of the original Nomex® E89™. During production, small evenly spaced apertures are created in the fabric. This promotes greater air permeability and quicker drying.

Another advantage that can be applied to some non-wovens is the addition of Tefl on® F treatment. Both Nomex® E89™ and AraFlo® can be impregnated with a highly-durable, water-resistant treatment to greatly improve the liner’s ability to resist water absorption. Tefl on® F-fi nished non-wovens also dry very rapidly. Dry liner systems minimize the amount of water that can replace the critical insulative air space in the system.

BattingsBattings (sometimes called felts or needled non-wovens) are a soft, bulky assembly using the air between the randomly-needled fi bers to form an insulative barrier.

Thermal liners using battings are usually made with one layer of needled material quilted to a face cloth. Battings cannot be treated to reduce water absorption and, therefore, they can get very heavy, be slow to dry and may transfer heat when wet.

Combination SystemsThe LION “Center Cut” and “Exhale SRS®” systems are examples of true combination liners. They use separate layers of durable, water-repellent materials to sandwich the moisture barrier. The moisture barrier is double-protected. This improves the thermal insulation value (TPP) by protecting the moisture barrier and creating multiple air spaces between the increased number of very thin layers.

Low Friction Lets You Move More FreelyGlide™ face cloth has the highest levels of lubricity in the fi re service. The slick low-friction properties of Glide™ mean added freedom of movement and less working stress for a more comfortable feel in your turnout gear. Freer movement means thermal liner systems with a Glide™ face cloth help fi ght stress and fatigue.

The low friction capability of Glide™ does not diminish after laundering. Independent tests prove that Glide™ is up to 25% slicker after washing than Caldura® brand liners.

Absolute-wick Characteristics Keep You Ready for ActionGlide™ eliminates the clammy feel of other low-friction fi lament liners by wicking perspiration away from the body to keep you more comfortable. It also dries twice as fast as other low friction liners to keep you ready for action.

Liners with Glide™ look and perform better; and to meet the rigors of fi refi ghting can be quilted to Nomex® E89™ and AraFlo® spunlace or 100% virgin Nomex®/Kevlar® batting.

Moisture Barrier CriteriaWhile the moisture barrier has a number of supplemental functions, its main job is to keep the thermal protective properties of the system intact by preventing external water from penetrating into the critical air spaces of the garment.

A dry system is safer, more dependable, more comfortable and a lot lighter than a wet one. All moisture barriers will shed external water, but there are signifi cant diff erences in their breathability, durability, thermal integrity and long-term reliability.

Highly-breathable moisture barriers are intended to prevent water from entering into the thermal layers, while allowing body vapor from sweat to escape outward. A more breathable barrier will usually reduce the amount of moisture and body heat that can be trapped inside the gear. Remember, the body heat in your sweat can only escape through your breathable moisture barrier in vapor form.

What is Total Heat Loss?In its eff orts to maintain metabolic equilibrium, the body exhausts excess heat. Some of this thermal energy is dry heat, but most of it is in the form of sweat. The evaporation of sweat is the body’s most eff ective natural cooling mechanism. The Total Heat Loss number for a fabric or a combination of fabrics is the amount of energy that can be transferred through the system ... from the inside out. The higher the THL value, the more likely the system is to allow excess body heat to escape, greatly reducing heat stress, keeping you cooler and dryer in extreme environments.

Moisture Barrier OfferingsLION Janesville® turnouts off er a full range of moisture barriers from W.L. Gore: CROSSTECH® black, CROSSTECH® 3-Layer and Gore RT7100™. Each is engineered to give you superior penetration resistance against water, blood, body fl uids and NFPA common fi reground chemicals.

Separable Liner System Eases Cleaning, Inspection and RepairThe Separable Liner System for turnout coats and pants makes it easier to separate, inspect, send for repair and/or replace the moisture barrier or thermal liner of turnout coats or pants. The Separable Liner System, developed by LION, is available with any LION Janesville® brand custom turnout model.

Turnout liner systems are a composite of face cloth, thermal liner and moisture barrier. Normally, the edges of the composite are sewn together, making it diffi cult to inspect, test and replace the moisture barrier alone. The Separable Liner System attaches the thermal liner to the moisture barrier with a combination of zippers and Velcro® to form a complete inner liner system that allows the components to be detached for inspection, cleaning, repair and/or replacement.

Liner Inspection System Makes Inspecting EasyThe Liner Inspection System makes Complete Liner Inspections easier and faster. It has a Velcro® sealed opening to allow you to easily examine the fi lm side of the moisture barrier and inside of the thermal liner on both coats and pants. This means no more ripping seams and re-stitching on inspections. Comes standard on all LION Janesville® models.

Velcro® sealed opening allows access to inner parts of the liner system.

A circumferential opening with two-inch overlap increases heat loss performance while maintaining thermal and moisture protection.

Vented Moisture Barrier for Superior ComfortLION’s Vented Moisture Barrier delivers increased heat loss performance, reduced stress and additional comfort, while maintaining thermal and moisture protection. Similar in design to a golf jacket, it’s a two-piece moisture barrier system with a circumferential opening at the torso mid-section to allow vapor to escape. A two-inch overlap keeps water out.

Outer Shell CriteriaThe outer shell probably has the most demanding role in the total confi guration of a turnout. It has two critical functions: to resist ignition from direct fl ame impingement and to protect the internal layers from rips, tears, slashes, abrasion, etc. Some outer shell materials can have modest impact on TPP tests or can resist water absorption better than others. The real test of an outer shell material is its ability to maintain its protective qualities under high thermal loads and to stand up on the fi reground.

PBI® Matrix 7.25 oz/yd2 60% Kevlar®/40% PBI® fabric blend with a matrix of 600 denier fi lament Kevlar® cables inserted for superior durability and tear and abrasion resistance. Delivers outstanding thermal protective performance and resistance to high heat and direct fl ame impingement. Treated with Tefl on® F-PPE for the most durable water repellency.

Armor™ 7.0 oz/yd2 Armor™ is the strongest, most fl exible lightweight outer shell. It's a blend of 75% Kevlar® (50% fi lament/50% spun yarns) and 25% Nomex®. Treated with Tefl on® F-PPE for the most durable water repellency.

Advance Ultra™ 7.5 oz/yd2 plain weave with pronounced ripstop for added strength. Available only in natural gold color. It’s blend of 60% Kevlar®, 20% Nomex® and 20% PBO® provides structural integrity and resistance to high heat.

Reinforcements Add Life to High-Wear Areas Shoulders, knees, elbows and cuffs should be reinforced to protect the wearer and extend the useful life of your turnout. It’s a lot less expensive to replace a single layer of reinforcement material than it is to try and repair a turnout that has an abraded outer shell, thermal liner and moisture barrier.

In addition to reinforcement, high compression areas such as shoulders, elbows, yoke and knees should be cushioned to provide additional comfort and thermal protection to the fire fighter.

Leather Leather is the least expensive option for reinforcement. It is more durable than any outer shell, but can be difficult to clean. It also picks up more water than other reinforcements.

Extra Layer Of Outer ShellAn extra layer of outer shell material is relatively flexible. The cost varies by fabric. “Self fabric” is the least durable of all the reinforcement options. If the extra layer of outer shell material is either Fusion™, PBI® Matrix, Armor™ or another isodri® fabric, it will have somewhat better durability and water resistance than other outer shell materials.

Polymer-Coated AramidPolymer-coated aramid has outstanding water resistance. It’s very durable, easy to clean and stands up to heat. It’s a little less flexible than leather or self material and costs a bit more than leather.

SuperFabric® TechnologyEpoxy bead resin-coated aramid, the best of both worlds. It's durable, easy to clean, flexible and stands up to heat. Although not impermeable, it has better water resistance than outer shell material.

Reducing Compression BurnsOne of the most frequent factors in fi re fi ghter injuries is the “compression” burn. These injuries can range from irritating “strawberry” burns all the way up to life-threatening, full-thickness burns.

Compression burn injuries can happen in routine operations or in an inferno. They almost always happen without warning, so it’s sometimes said that nothing can be done about them. That’s not true.

Moisture Management Is the KeyThe dangers of compression burns cannot be totally eliminated for fi re fi ghters, but the likelihood and frequency can be reduced. Since the presence of water in the PPE system greatly increases the unpredictability of your protection, “moisture management” is a key element in reducing risk.

Lite-N-Dri™ Cushioning Adds Thermal Protection to High-Compression, High-Risk Areas Lite-N-Dri™ cushioning provides supplemental thermal insulation to turnout coats and pants in high-compression areas such as knees, shoulders, elbows and yoke.

Its basic function is to guard against extraordinary thermal energy (heat) overpowering the thermal barrier and putting the fi re fi ghter at risk. When parts of your protective envelope are compressed, you are more vulnerable to heat-related injury because the compression removes the insulating air from your thermal barrier.

Lite-N-Dri™ has millions of air pockets that allow it to defl ect and absorb energy. Lite-N-Dri™ is impermeable so it will not absorb water. This further helps reduce your vulnerability to compression-related burn injuries, especially compared to batting-type knee pads that soak up water like a sponge.

Lightweight and FlexibleCompared to other knee systems, Lite-N-Dri™ is lighter weight and more fl exible, increasing mobility and reducing stress on the fi re fi ghter.

Most thermal insulators in today’s PPE defl ect a little energy and then absorb as much energy as they can. When they’ve absorbed their fi ll, they transfer that energy. That energy transfer can be quick, explosive and unpredictable, especially when water is introduced into the system. At only 200˚F, water transfers heat 21 times more quickly than air.

Lite-N-Dri™ cushioning helps guard against heat-related injuries in areas of high compression such as knees, shoulders, elbows and yoke. That’s why Lite-N-Dri™ is built into the knee of every liner and every shell of LION Janesville® turnout gear

Lite-N-Dri™ more eff ectively resists compressive heat transfer than conventional reinforcement materials, especially when both are soaked in water.

Lite-N-Dri™ Knee Reinforcement System Delivers 150% More Thermal ProtectionAll LION Janesville® pants include a layer of Lite-N-Dri™ closed-cell cushioning between the moisture and thermal barrier for increased thermal protection and comfort. Lite-N-Dri™ is impermeable to vapor and a proven heat blocker. This is further enhanced with another layer of Lite-N-Dri™ between the outer shell and the knee reinforcement. The additional layer of Lite-N-Dri™ gives you 150% more thermal protection.

FireWall Knee™ Reinforcement System Delivers 250% More Thermal ProtectionThe FireWall Knee™ has the same design as the Lite-N-Dri™ system, but silicone foam is used between the outer shell and the knee reinforcement. Silicone has outstanding thermal resistance and delivers 250% more thermal protection than a standard knee system. Like the Lite-N-Dri™ Knee Reinforcement System, the FireWall Knee™ Reinforcement System also off ers superior comfort when kneeling or crawling.

To reduce the stress on you and your turnout gear, Semper Dri™ employs a special Tefl on® F treated thermal liner material to reduce absorption, staying drier and lighter. This means more comfort and less stress. In comparative fi eld tests, garments using Semper Dri™ material in the lower legs were noticeably lighter in weight after structural fi refi ghting activities and training exercises involving high volumes of water.

Semper Dri™ material is also standard in the waterwells of coat sleeves and in the shoulder/yoke area of coat liners.

Wrist Shield System™ Minimizes Exposure to Water, Steam and FlameOptional Wrist Shield System™ securely seals the wristlet of your turnout coat to your wrist. When you reach, the wristlet and CROSSTECH® black moisture barrier travels with your wrist to minimize exposure to water, steam and fl ame. Semper Dri™ material is employed in the waterwells of the coat sleeves to reduce water absorption.

Semper Dri™ System Reduces Water GainThermal liners on conventional turnout pants have a tendency to absorb water from fi reground activities at the bottom of the leg and migrate upward, sometimes even beyond the knees. This can make the garment heavy and uncomfortable, contribute to stress and possible burn injury during fi refi ghting activities and require more drying time. Gravity of the excess weight can also pull the hems of the pants down, causing contact with ground surfaces. This can contribute to premature wear at the cuff s and even seat and crotch seam failure on turnout pants.

Common thermal liner material absorbs water from the fi reground. This adds weight, which can contribute to premature wear and can displace the insulative air in your protective envelope, making you vulnerable to steam and compression burns.

Semper Dri™ employs Tefl on® F treated thermal lining material at the lower part of the legs, the arms and shoulders/yoke area to minimize absorption. This keeps the garment's working weight closer to its dry weight.

Refl ective Material On PPE Enhances Fire Fighter SafetyThe purpose of trim on turnouts, helmets, boots and other emergency garments is to make the fi re fi ghter or medic more visible in both low light and daylight conditions. NFPA 1971 requires refl ective material be both retrorefl ective and fl uorescent. Retrorefl ectivity occurs when light is refl ected off a surface and returns to its original source. Fluorescence is the “glow” generated by an object that has absorbed light. It greatly increases daytime visibility.

3M™ Scotchlite™ Refl ective Material

3M™ Scotchlite™ Refl ective Material is comprised of millions of tiny, almost round microspheres. Half of each sphere has a mirror coating. When light hits a microsphere, it is refracted through the surface and sent back out toward the light source. 3M™ Scotchlite™ Refl ective Material is more durable and holds up well to heat in comparison to other trim. However, 3M™ Scotchlite™ Refl ective Material does tend to lose some of its retrorefl ective eff ectiveness when wet.

3M™ Scotchlite™ Refl ective Material is available in red-orange, lime-yellow or what is often referred to as “triple-trim”, which is two bands of fl uorescent red-orange or lime-yellow with a band of refl ective silver in between.

Refl exite® Refl ective Material

Refl exite® Refl ective Material is vinyl cube-corner prism sheeting with microprismatic optical elements protected by a smooth outer surface. It has excellent retrorefl ective properties, even when wet. It is available in fl uorescent lime-yellow.

Refl ective Material

Ventilated Trim

The perforations on Ventilated Trim provide a conduit for vapor away from the fire fighter’s body.

Impermeable Trim

Ventilated Trim Provides Conduit For Vapor Release

Refl ective materials are impermeable. As vapor escapes your protective envelope, moisture can collect between refl ective trim and the outer shell of your turnout. When the trim is compressed and heated, the trapped moisture can vaporize and transfer heat toward the body.

LION Ventilated Trim is perforated with 0.8 mm holes (114 per square inch) to provide a conduit for the release of vapor and guard against the potential hazards of trapped moisture.

LION Ventilated Trim is available in both 3M™ Scotchlite™ Refl ective Material and in Refl exite® Refl ective Material.

On standard trim, moisture can accumulate between the outer shell and trim. When the trim is compressed and heated, the trapped moisture can vaporize and transfer heat toward the fire fighter’s body.
