Design Principles:- Establish a strong contrast between urban and rural land-uses within urbanised areas.- Spatial organisation by country estates and polder landscape. - Estates as Foci along the Vliet. - Polder parcels provide a variation of plantation.

Programmatic opportunities:-Re-working of the landscape as a production landscape allowed by ecological or global climate objectives.-Residential quality in correlation with isolation:Using the reference of the former peat reclamation lakes the ‘production polder’ could provide an interesting basis for an dynamic residential landscape

Each of the models is de! ned through the development of a speci! c typological approach providing the main design principles. In relation to this typological elaboration of the models, also programmatic directives have been developed providing an assessment of the spatial claims.

Design Principles:- Provide a clear character to the Coulisse and de! ne their relation with the urban occupation that encloses them.- Provide a coherent structure (design language) to the urban Boulevard, the central artery in the new system of secondary roads and in addition provide in a di" erentiation of other routes.

Design Principles:- Introduce the infrastructural lines to organize the development of the Vlietzone in di" erent smaller zones that confront each other and allow developments along the parkway.

4. Legibility: Local identity

5. Legibility: Landscape grain

1. Integration of the flowscape with the local context

To re-arrange the spatial organisation from the Vlietweg the main recommendation is to threat the re-organisation of infrastructure as an integrated assignment in the development of the zone.

2. Permeability & internal connectivity

3. Road-allotment relation: routing & public space

More attention for road-allotmentrelationships provides the opportunity to:- Stage programme along the # owscapes of Vliet, A4 and urban motorway by routing, following the example of estates as foci along the Vliet- Develop a more qualitative public space along the main infrastructure.

$ e thesis links the generic principles to other fringe areas with similar characteristics such as the A15 zone in Rotterdam and the Brettenzone in Amsterdam.

Ultimately the thesis argues for a de! nition of the fringe from the # owscape, in relation to open landscape enclaves and urban fabric, as a binding elements in the future fringe.
