2011 Arizona Fall League Tidbits • Atlanta Braves RHP Craig Kimbrel (2009 Peoria Saguaros) won the 2011 National League rookie-of-the-year award, becoming the 22nd

Fall League alum to earn the honor for either league. Kimbrel set an N.L. rookie record with 46 saves.

• A total of nine former Fall Leaguers won 2011 Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Awards. The six National League winners include 1B Prince Fielder (2005 Peoria Javelinas), 2B Brandon Phillips (2001 Scottsdale Scorpions/2002 Phoenix Desert Dogs), SS Troy Tulowitzki (2006 Grand Canyon Rafters), LF Ryan Braun (2006 Scottsdale Scorpions), CF Matt Kemp (2005 Phoenix Desert Dogs) and C Brian McCann (2004 Grand Canyon Rafters). The American League boasted three Fall League alumni: 1B Adrian Gonzalez (2003 Peoria Saguaros), CF Curtis Granderson (2004 Grand Canyon Rafters) and CF Jacoby Ellsbury (2006 Peoria Javelinas).

• A total of 11 former Fall Leaguers took home 2011 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards. The five N.L. winners include 1B Joey Votto (2005 Mesa Solar Sox), 2B Brandon Phillips (2001 Scottsdale Scorpions/2002 Phoenix Desert Dogs), SS Troy Tulowitzki (2006 Grand Canyon Rafters), CF Matt Kemp (2005 Phoenix Desert Dogs) and RF Andre Ethier (2005 Phoenix Desert Dogs). The six in the A.L. are C Matt Wieters (2008 Surprise Rafters), 1B Adrian Gonzalez (2003 Peoria Saguaros), 2B Dustin Pedroia (2004 Scottsdale Scorpions), LF Alex Gordon (2005 Surprise Scorpions), CF Jacoby Ellsbury (2006 Peoria Javelinas) and RF Nick Markakis (2005 Peoria Javelinas).

• Los Angeles Dodgers OF Matt Kemp (2005 Phoenix Desert Dogs) won the 2011 Hank Aaron Award as the most outstanding offensive performer in the National League. Kemp led the N.L. in homers (39), RBI (126) and runs (115) while finishing third in average (.324).

• Major League Baseball named Boston Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury (2006 Peoria Javelinas) the 2011 American League Comeback Player of the Year after he posted career highs in nearly every offensive category. Ellsbury became the fourth player in major league history to eclipse 200 hits, 100 RBI, 35 stolen bases and 30 home runs in the same season.

• Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko (1996 Sun Cities Solar Sox) became the 27th member of the Arizona Fall League Hall of Fame following his Oct. 22 induction at Salt River Fields. The Scottsdale resident and Chaparral High School alum owns seven 30-homer seasons and six 100-RBI seasons during his illustrious 15-year career.

• Three of the last four no. 1 overall picks in the MLB First-Year Player Draft are playing in this year’s Arizona Fall League: RHP Gerrit Cole (Mesa) was drafted first by the Pirates in 2011, OF Bryce Harper (Scottsdale) was taken first by the Nationals in 2010 and IF Tim Beckham (Surprise) was made the first overall selection by the Rays in 2008. Additionally, RHP Stephen Strasburg, the no. 1 pick of the Nationals in 2009, played for Phoenix in 2009, meaning the last four no. 1 overall picks have played in the AFL. Since 1992, the year the Arizona Fall League started, 13 of the 20 no. 1 overall picks in the MLB draft will have played in the AFL. The current streak of four straight no. 1 picks (2008-11) is the second-longest streak, following a five-year stretch (1997-2001) that saw Matt Anderson (1997), Pat Burrell (1998), Josh Hamilton (1999), Adrian Gonzalez (2000) and Joe Mauer (2001) all participate in the AFL.

• The Arizona Fall League had three games televised nationally on the MLB Network and online at MLB.TV this season: the Nov. 5 Rising Stars Game, the Nov. 11 AFL Military Appreciation Game and today’s AFL Championship Game.

The Fall League Five 1. Surprise 3B Mike Olt (TEX) closed the season with an AFL shared season-long 17-game hitting streak and finished as the 2011 AFL home

run and RBI champion. Olt fell one home run shy in his quest to tie the AFL record of 14 set by Brandon Wood in 2005 and one RBI short of Orlando Miller’s record of 44 from 1993. Olt’s 13 home runs, 43 RBI and .764 slugging percentage all rank second in league history.

2. Peoria 3B Jedd Gyorko (SD) won the 2011 AFL batting title after hitting .437 (31-for-71) with 5 home runs, 22 RBI and 17 runs scored in 18 games. He is the Peoria Javelinas’ fifth AFL batting champion in the last six years. Gyorko’s .437 mark is the second-highest average in AFL history behind Scottsdale Scorpions 1B Ken Harvey’s AFL-record .479 clip in 2002.

3. Salt River 3B Nolan Arenado (COL), who led the minors with 122 RBI at High-A Modesto in 2011, finished second in the AFL with 33 RBI led the league with 47 hits and tied for the lead with 18 extra-base hits. Arenado was the only player this season with multiple hitting streaks of 10 or more games and multiple four-hit games.

4. Surprise LHP Miguel De Los Santos (TEX) led the AFL with five wins and 40 strikeouts this season, including a pair of five-inning, one-hit scoreless outings Oct. 29 and Nov. 17, in which he fanned eight and six batters, respectively. De Los Santos recorded just the second 40-strikeout season in the AFL since 2002 (Tommy Hanson, 49, 2008).

5. The Surprise Saguaros set a league winning percentage record at .722 after going 26-10, breaking the 1999 Mesa Solar Sox’ mark of .705 (31-13). The Sags lost consecutive games just once and joined the 1999 Solar Sox as the only teams to finish at least 16 games over .500.
