Conversations with our newest Trustees…
Karleen M. HalliwellKarleen is an Investment Management Specialist with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney where she has been helping her clients build, manage and preserve their wealth since 1996. In 2012 she received the prestigious 5 Star Wealth Manager Award, and subsequently was asked to join one of the firms’s largest in-house investment teams. Her specialty is customized portfolio development and investment risk/reward analysis. She graduated from Salve Regina University Cum Laude in 1991 and served an Executive Board Member of the Sigma Phi Sigma Honor Society.
She began her volunteer work at MCDS in 2007, serving as a School Ambassador for new families. Since then, she has been actively involved as a member of the Development Committee, the Inaugural Board of Advisors as well as the Annual Giving Committee. She and “old whats-his-name” co-chaired the Spartan Golf and Tennis Event.
Karleen is married to Jack L. Halliwell and they currently have 3 sons who attend MCDS: Jackson in Grade 5 and twins Cliff and Cody in the 2nd Grade. The Halliwells reside in Golden Beach and summer at their home in Nantucket, Massachusetts.
Share a little about how/why you became involved in the school and continue to be so involved and make such a difference.
KH: There wasn’t any one thing in particular, but my kids are here and I want to be a part of their community and help in any way I can.
MN: Wherever you live you need to have something to do besides your work and hobbies. Something where you can give a little bit back to people who may need your help, whether it’s your time, knowledge or funds you give. Since I have kids here at the school I am more committed to be involved because it impacts children. Anything that helps children makes me feel good.
You have been involved in so many different ways already. What has been your most impactful experience as a volunteer? As a parent?
KH: My favorite experience so far as a volunteer has been as a Co-Chair on the Benefit (golf, tennis, dinner and auction). This event supports our teachers and as a parent I knew I was helping support the teachers that teach my children. In light of the recent tragic events in Connecticut, I think it is most important to recognize and support our teachers. It is without a doubt that the faculty and staff here at Country Day have and will continue to put our children first.
MN: I grew up in Germany where there was some mismanagement in the school system. My daughter had some bad experiences that created anxiety in her and fear of failing at school. When we came to Miami Country Day and saw how the school assisted us and other children in dealing with their different situations and needs, it has been amazing to me and makes me happy to be involved.
The school has gone through a lot of change over the years, both physical and internal, what have been the biggest changes you’ve seen since your family first joined the school community?
KH: So many things, from the new street, to the school’s logistics, educational opportunities, the Franco Center and of course, being the mother of three boys, the athletic facilities.
MN: The biggest and easiest thing to see is the undertaking and finishing of 107th street. Along with this the main entryway to the school campus itself and, of course, the Franco Center, these two projects pushed the school to a totally different level of visible perfection in learning. Internally, I have come to know that Miami Country Day School faculty and staff stay at the school for a long time, which creates more of a family environment, and whether it’s good or bad, I haven’t been here long enough to judge, but so far I like this approach very much as long as all who are here are committed to the school’s mission.
What do you see as your role as a trustee?
KH: To be a good steward serving as a guide for the school as it develops and carries out its mission and strategic plan for current and future generations. To be a part of the driving force to take Country Day to the next level.
MN: To help the school strive to be the best it can be and to help support the school wherever it is needed, both with my time, expertise and financially.

In the related school system he trained in Mathematics, German, English, German Politics and Accounting. He was with ASN Immobilien GmbH from 1991 to 2008, which is a residential real estate company in the eastern part of Germany. He served as Manager of HNV Heinz Nixdorf Verwaltungs- GmbH, Germany from 1997 to 2007, the managing entity of the Nixdorf Family Office. Serves as Manager of Renate Nixdorf Verwaltungs- GmbH, Germany, a Private Equity Company investing in Germany, USA and UK. He serves as a Board of Advisor HNV GmbH Germany 2007 to present, the managing entity of the Nixdorf Family Office. He is also Vice President of Marketing and Sales at SDI Inc. since 2010 to present, a Land Development Company investing and managing company.
Matthias’ volunteer work includes: Board of Directors, Michael Stich Stiftung since 2006. In 1994, tennis professional, Michael Stich, founded the “Michael Stich Foundation” with the aim to support children living in Germany, infected by HIV or living with AIDS; He served on the inaugural Board of Advisors at Miami Country Day School and serves on the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees.
What do you think the importance of annual giving is to the school?
KH: Annual Giving supports the school and its ability to provide our children with the education we all expect. It promotes a culture of philanthropy that is so important to an independent school’s ability to provide a quality education for students now and those to come in the future. Through education, it is also teaching our kids to embrace this culture of philanthropy early on, and allowing them to continue throughout their lives.
MN: Understanding the financial needs of the school and how competitive the independent school business is, I know how important it is for us all to support the Annual Giving every single year.
What is something you are very proud of and why?
KH: My three sons! They, of course, affirmed that when I shared what I was working on!!
MN: I am proud to have moved with my whole family to a foreign country where the kids needed to adopt a foreign culture without losing their own roots. This is something special to me because it opens ones way of thinking and to some extent it gives you the opportunity to learn something which you couldn’t without being here.
What book are you currently reading?
KH: I am reading again my all-time favorite book, The Pep Talk by Dr. Kevin Elko. It’s a football story about the business of winning.
MN: I’m absolutely not a reader. I’m not reading books like novels but I’m reading about everything that interests me at the time. That may be about business or people I meet or people I want to meet, about new inventions or about the past.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work and MCDS?
KH: As a family we play tennis, enjoy boating, surfing, fishing and skiing.
MN: My hobbies are always related to the area where I’m living. Being in Miami, the water attracts me a lot. The one thing I always love to do wherever I am is to work out, go biking and learn new things on the computer.

Miami Country Day School was the beneficiary of a portion of Gala Munnings’ group life insurance policy as designated by Gala Munnings, an alumni parent. Throughout her life and even in her passing, Gala Munnings gave back to her community to help others. Munnings, a civil rights activist and educator, died June 10, 2011 following a brief illness. Gala’s daughters, Corine Munnings, M.D.’97, and Ashli Munnings ’02, were on campus recently as part of Career Day and celebrating class reunions. Gala’s involvement in the desegregation movement in Dade County was documented in the Miami Herald series, “South Florida History – Miami Stories” and noted by Miami historian Arva Moore Parks. As a senior at Miami Edison High School, Munnings led a peaceful sit-in to protest discriminatory practices at the school. That effort resulted in one of her closest friends being made the high school’s first black cheerleader. Munnings graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. She went on to pursue a master’s degree in Social Work at Barry University in Miami Shores. In 1974 she married Frederick Munnings, Jr. of Nassau, Bahamas. The couple settled in Nassau and had their daughters, Corine and Ashli. Gala spent 14 of her 15 years in the Bahamas working at the College of the Bahamas as coordinator of the Social Work Program and director of Field Instruction. She established the first after-school center for school-age children in Nassau. In 1995 she returned to South Florida and for six years served as coordinator and Faculty Field Instructor for the Academy for Better Communities Norland Triplex Field Unit, supervising social work interns. She was later appointed associate professor and then Director of Field Education, posts she held until April 2011.
Do you have questions about estate planning? Planned giving? Your will? We can help answer those questions. Check each month on the school’s website for new articles and interactive features that cover such topics. We hope it will be a useful resource for you. Visit: www.miamicountryday.org/PlannedGiving
Remembering Us in Your WillYou can include a gift in your will, known as a bequest, to Miami Country Day School when you create your will, or you may add or update a be-quest later with a codicil. There are two important points to keep in mind as you make your plans to ensure your gift is carried out as you intend. See the website link above for more details….
How to Make a Lasting Legacy You can leave a lasting legacy by creating or contributing to an endow-ment—a fund in which the principal is invested and all or part of the earn-ings are used to help the programs and goals you want to support. See the website link above for more details….
Are You Prepared for 2013 Tax Law Changes? If you haven’t drawn up an estate plan yet, there may be no better time to do so. The current estate tax laws will expire at the end of 2012. Unless Congress intervenes before that time, you will see significant changes. Here is a preview of what you can expect:
• Income and capital gains taxes will both increase and the estate, gift and generation-skipping tax (the shift of property by gift or at death to a person who is two or more generations below that of the person granting the gift) exemptions will change dramatically in 2013. The basic exclu-sion amount (the amount you can own before your estate is subject to estate taxes) lowers from $5.12 million in 2012 to $1 million in 2013.• The top estate tax rate also increases from 35 percent to 55 percent. That means, for every dollar you own more than the $1 million exemption, up to 55 percent will be subject to federal estate taxes upon your death. • And it is expected to affect many more estates. The Internal Revenue Service, for example, estimates that 114,600 estates of people dying in 2013 will have to pay taxes on their estates. By comparison, in 2011, an estimated 8,600 estates of people who died paid estate taxes.
If a new tax bill is approved before December 31, 2012, be ready for the last-minute changes by talking with your tax advisor. This informa-tion and more can be found on the school’s website by going to this link: www.miamicountryday.org/PlannedGiving

A Night at Mango’s Restaurant...Founders’ Circle Donor Recognition Event
Miami Country Day honored the support of our Founders’ Circle members at a fun and lively evening at Mango’s Restaurant on South Beach in November 2011. Hosted and underwritten by Josh ’94 and Elida Wallack, who are parents and also Josh is an alumnus of Country Day and Elida is our Middle School Dance teacher. Founders’ Circle members enjoyed an evening of fabulous music, incredible dance numbers and celebration of a successful Annual Giving campaign.
The Founders’ Circle recognizes donors whose Annual Giving contributions are of the second highest order, with gifts of $1,000 or more. We are deeply appreciative of our members as they represent 87% of the total dollars raised 2011-2012.The spirit of the Founders’ Circle represents selfless leadership and is perpetuated annually though gifts to the Annual Giving Campaign. Contributions by Founders’ Circle members make an impact in our ability to provide excellence in education. Thank you to the following donors who make a difference for every student, every day.

A Night at Indian Creek Village...Palm Society Donor Recognition Event
“What a lovely evening!” said one of our Palm Society members. They were enjoying the wonderful Palm Society donor recognition event at the home of Andria and Javier Holtz, Upper School Annual Giving Chairs. The Palm Society members enjoyed beautiful views of Biscayne Bay and the company of fellow parents and trustees.
Thank you to the 100 members of the 2011-12 Palm Society! The Palm Society recognizes donors whose Annual Giving contributions are the highest order with gifts of $2,500 or more. All together, the Palm Society raised $335,986! These members’ contributions represent over 59% of the overall Annual Giving campaign. Miami Country Day is grateful to Andria and Javier for hosting and underwriting this very special event.
Thank you to Palm Society members who contribute more than half of the total dollars raised each year. Contributions from Palm Society members make a concrete difference in our ability to provide excellence in education.

At a recent alumni event, an alumnus from the Class of 1997 stated, “We need to thank our Alumni for paving the way for the current successes of Miami Country Day School.” We believe this is true and we owe much of our success to our Alumni. Therefore, we thank you for being part of our school community. Thank you to our alumni donors who give back to Country Day by supporting Annual Giving. Your gifts demonstrate how much you believe in the education you received at MCDS.

Other Areas of Support Endowment is the financial foundation of all successful educational institutions. Income from endowment secures programs, provides faculty incentives, maintains facilities, funds need-based student financial aid, and enhances the educational experience beyond the provision of tuition. An endowed fund generates income for its designated purpose or department according to the School’s endowment policy established by the Board of Trustees. All endowed funds are accepted at the School’s discretion based on this policy. Recognizing the need to increase endowment for the security of Miami Country Day’s future, endowed funds have been established to address general operations, scholarship, faculty, buildings and programs.

Securing the FutureMiami Country Day School is appreciative of the many individuals who made payments during the 2011-12 fiscal year toward their commitments in support of the school’s Securing the Future campaign. The focus of this capital campaign was to provide funds to increase endowment and to build a new athletic complex, amphitheater, and multi-purpose facility that have become the heart and intellectual center of the Country Day campus. The support of the many donors listed on our website (www.miamicountryday.org/SecuringtheFuture) made a difference in the successful completion of our largest campaign in the school’s history to date, raising $10 million. If you have any questions about supporting capital projects or the endowment for the benefit of students and teachers, please contact Sheryl Piper, Director of Development, at [email protected] or 305-779-7273.

Birthday BooksHonoring Children’s Birthdays with a Book to the Library
Through the support of Michael J. Franco (1911-2004) and his wife, Katherine (1908-2002), the Birthday Book program was developed and has continued to grow, providing new books for the library every year. As a special way to remember a child’s birthday or other celebratory occasion, parents, grandparents and friends may donate the cost of a new book that will include a commemorative plate bearing the student’s name placed inside the book. The book is then presented and read to the child’s library class and reserved in the library for many years to come. For more information, please call the library at 305-779-7296 or email at [email protected]. Special thanks to the following people who made book donations during the 2011-2012 school year:

Mission Statement
Miami Country Day School is
a college preparatory learning
community committed to
educating the whole child.
Through the core values of
honor, respect, wisdom and
compassion, we prepare students
to be lifelong learners. We
inspire our children to develop
their intellectual, physical,
aesthetic, social, emotional and
spiritual potentials by valuing
every student every day.
