WHEN THE ‘GOINS’ GETS TOUGH

As the Cuonzo Martin era on Rocky Top begins this season, the 2011-12 cam-paign also marks the debut of a new starting point guard for Tennessee. Sopho-more Trae Golden is among those hoping to earn the lion’s share of minutes.

The Powder Springs, Ga., native spent the majority of the 2010-11 season play-ing behind senior Melvin Goins.

“Melvin was one of the best defenders in the country, so it definitely helped me to go up against him every day in practice,” Golden said. “It obviously helped my offense, but it helped me to play better defense, too.”

Golden now hopes to showcase that improvement on both ends of the floor for the Volunteers, as his commitment to excellence was renewed after Tennessee’s

unceremonious exit from the 2011 NCAA Tournament. And the now-departed Goins believes Golden is up for the challenges that face

every SEC point guard. “Trae showed a lot of courage and dedication to not only compete, but to learn

all the facets of basketball at this level,” Goins said. “It takes a strong person to go through what we went through last year, and Trae was just a freshman then.

“The fact that he has been so dedicated to getting better is a testament to his character.”

That courage, dedication and commitment to pursuing excellence will be a pivotal key to the Vols’ fortunes this season.

FIERCE PHYSICALITY

If you haven’t seen Jeronne Maymon since last season, you may not recognize him now. He’s a changed man. The junior forward underwent a physical transfor-mation, dropping weight and adding muscle during the offseason.

“I wanted to get into better shape because I anticipated a bigger role this year and I didn’t want to let my teammates down,” Maymon said. “I didn’t want to let myself down either. It’s a whole new year and a whole new role.

“It was a group effort—my teammates keeping me accountable for what I eat, telling me I don’t need to put ranch on everything. There was a lot of self-discipline and hard work on the court, off the court and in the weight room.”

The results of that disciplined approach will undoubtedly help the Madison, Wis., native, who knows first-hand the kind of shape one must be in to pound it out in the take-no-prisoners SEC paint.

“I wanted to slim down a little, but I ended up gaining a few pounds of muscle,”

Maymon added. “On the defensive side, that helps when you’re guarding bigger posts. In the SEC, there are a lot of big, muscular posts and I’m going to need to hold my own.”

Pushing Maymon every step of the way was associate strength and conditioning coach Troy Wills.

“Jeronne is about 260 pounds of solid mass—that’s a lot,” Wills said. “He’s fast and he’s strong. He’s got quick feet. He did a real nice job in weight conditioning over the summer, too. He put the work in and you can really tell a difference.”

Maymon sweated away his summer in the weight room with inspiring results. His bench press is now more than 300 pounds, and his body fat is down to just 10 percent.

After all that hard work, Maymon is now ready to face the rough and tough com-petition that he’ll encounter in SEC frontcourt battles.

‘SCORING MACHINE’ LOOKS TO CONTRIBUTE ON BOTH ENDSJordan McRae can score. That’s no secret. His roommate, sophomore backcourt

mate Trae Golden, has gone so far as to call McRae “a scoring machine.”This past summer, McRae shattered the Rocky Top league scoring record with

a gaudy 45.7 points per game while leading his team to the championship game. And prior to his enrollment at UT, he set the all-time scoring record at Liberty

County High School and was a sought-after, four-star recruit. But McRae now finds himself lacing up for a completely new coaching staff that

emphasizes defensive intensity and physicality. So how has the transition been for the 6-5 shooting guard from Midway, Ga.?

“He’s handled it well and is making the adjustments,” assistant coach Kent Wil-liams said. “He understands the concentration you need to have on the defensive end. But at the same, time, one of his biggest strengths is as a scorer.

“And we don’t take strengths away from guys.”

McRae’s scoring ability aside, this first-year Tennessee coaching staff sees other facets of basketball in which McRae could emerge as a game-changer.

“He has extremely long arms and can cause havoc in the passing lanes,” Williams said. “He can also block shots. He could be particularly effective sliding over as a help defender to block shots against guys he may not even be guarding.”

A lack of focus prevented McRae from being much of a contributor last season, as he appeared in only 10 games and averaged 1.8 points in 5.3 minutes. But he is the first to admit that he was his own worst enemy at times, and his commitment to becoming a reliable leader during the 2011-12 campaign has been evident dur-ing preseason workouts.

“Jordan has made strides in getting his teammates involved,” Williams added. “If he continues to give his best effort on a consistent basis, he has the potential be a difference-maker not only on both ends of the floor but off the court as well.”

DEMENTIA, ALZHEIMER’S HITS HOME FOR TYLER SUMMITT

Excerpts taken from a Knoxville News Sentinel article written by Dan Fleser

Pat Summitt, the winningest coach in the history of the game of basketball, recently revealed she has been diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type. With the support of the entire UT community, she continues to lead the Lady Vols program as it seeks a ninth national championship during her storied tenure.

“She’s always better when she knows what she’s fighting against,’’ said Sum-mitt’s son, Tyler. “She had recommendations, what to do and what routine to get into and she’s going to prepare just like a game for her health.”

Tyler accompanied his mother to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where she was diagnosed in May, and has watched her sort through her responses. Despite being the offseason, Summitt’s calendar still was crowded with SEC meetings, summer camps and July recruiting. Tyler said that the sadness and anger lingered for at least a month.

“Nobody accepts this,’’ Tyler said. “And there was anger. “Why me?” was a ques-tion she asked more than once. But then, once she came to terms with it, she treated it like every other challenge she ever had, and is going to do everything she possibly can to keep her mind right and stay the coach.”

Use your smartphone to scan this code and watch the PBS NewsHour segment on Pat Summitt’s diagnosis with early-onset dementia, featuring Tyler Summitt.
