MEDIA INFO

Throughout the history of men’s college basketball, the Southeastern Conference has captured 11 NCAA Championships and four NIT titles, putting the SEC as one of the na-tion’s top basketball conferences.

During the 2006-07 academic year the Southeastern Conference became the first conference to win the Division I National Championship in Football (Florida), Men’s Basketball (Florida) and Women’s Basketball (Tennessee) in the same school year.

Only the SEC and the Big East have ever won both the men’s and women’s basketball titles in one season. The SEC won both three times (1996, 1998 and 2007). The Big East has won both twice (2003 and 2004).

The SEC recorded a .500 record or better against the other five major conferences in 2012. SEC teams posted a .700 (7-3) mark against Big 12 teams, .643 (9-5) against the ACC, .555 (5-4) against the Pac-12 and .500 (5-5) against the Big Ten.

The SEC has won at least 68 percent of its non-conference games since the league expanded to 12 teams in 1991-92.

In the 2012 NCAA Tournament, the SEC posted a 7-2 record against the other five major conferences.

The SEC led all other conferences with 12 players selected in the 2012 NBA Draft, including eight that were selected in the first round.

Over the last six NBA Drafts, 42 SEC players have heard their names called.

A total of eight SEC teams received postseason invitations in 2012. Four received NCAA Tournament bids (Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt) while four (LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Tennessee) were invited to play in the National Invita-tion Tournament.

The SEC has won 11 NCAA men’s basketball tournament titles. Since 1993, the SEC has won six men’s basketball national cham-pionships – Arkansas (1994), Kentucky (1996), Kentucky (1998), Florida (2006), Florida (2007) and Kentucky (2012). Only the ACC (6) has won as many men’s basketball titles during this time.

The SEC is the one of just three conferences in the nation to have all of its teams ranked at least one week in the Associated Press top 25 (excluding preseason polls) since 1999-00. Simply stated, every SEC team has been a top-25 team nationally at one point in the last 10 seasons.

More than 2.4 million fans have witnessed SEC basketball in each of the last six seasons. Kentucky and Tennessee were both ranked among the top six nationally in average attendance in 2012. The Wildcats led the nation with an average of 23,721 fans per game while the Vols were sixth with an average of 16,543.

Every team in the SEC has made at least one NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 10 editions of the NCAA Tournament.

The SEC is 48-26 (64.9 percent) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament over the last 14 tournaments (since 1999). In 1999 the SEC won each of its six first round games, becoming the first conference to have six teams win their first round games in the same season.

The Southeastern Conference has had at least one team ad-vance to the Sweet Sixteen in 22 of the last 23 years. The SEC re-cord for most teams advancing to the Sweet Sixteen is four which was accomplished in 1986 (Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, LSU) and in 1996 (Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi State).

Thirteen of the SEC’s 14 members have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen since 1996.

Each of the 126 conference games will be televised live as part of the SEC’s historic 15-year agreements with CBS Sports and ESPN that began in 2009-10. Almost half of the SEC’s league games will be distributed nationally with ESPN or ESPN2 televis-ing 31 contests, ESPNU showing 18 and CBS Sports five. Addition-ally, nine games will be offered on ESPN3. The SEC’s games on ESPN platforms are exclusively branded as the “SEC on ESPN.”

ut atHletiCs dePartMent CoMPlianCe stateMent Compliance with NCAA rules is one of the highest priorities for the University of Tennes-see and our athletics department. As a member of the NCAA, the University of Tennessee is responsible for the actions of its boosters and fans. Even the best intentions may violate NCAA rules. We need your help in observing all SEC and NCAA regulations. Boosters and fans must be careful of their interaction with prospective and current student-athletes. Therefore, we encourage our boosters and fans to “Ask Before You Act” by contacting the Compliance Office at 865-974-3871.

rePresentatives of atHletiCs interests, “Boosters” There are many ways an individual can be classified as a representative of Tennessee’s athletics interests. You are a “representative of The University of Tennessee’s athletics in-terests,” if you have been involved in a booster club, made financial contributions to the athletics program or booster organizations; provided benefits to an enrolled student-athlete; assisted in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes, or been involved in the promo-tion of UT athletics. Please note that once you have been identified as a representative of University of Tennessee athletics interests, you retain that identity indefinitely.

reCruiting, extra Benefits and induCeMents Only coaches and athletics department staff members can be involved in the recruiting process. All “athletics representatives” who are not employees of UT are prohibited from contacting a prospect by telephone, letter or in-person, on- or off-campus, for the purpose of encouraging participation in athletics at UT. It is not permissible for prospects, student-athletes or their relatives and friends to receive any extra benefits or special arrangements from a booster. Extra benefits include, but are not limited to: cash or loans in any amount; co-signing or arranging a loan; providing gifts of any kind (e.g. clothing, airline tickets, or holiday cards); providing special discounts for goods and services; use of an automobile. If you are an established friend or neighbor of a prospect, you may have contact with the prospect provided you do not try to recruit the prospect on behalf of UT, and that such contacts are not made at the direction of UT’s coaching staff. Please note that a prospect is a person who has started classes for the ninth grade.

eMPloyMent The Compliance Office must keep written records verifying all student-athlete employ-ment. NCAA rules stipulate that compensation may be paid to a student-athlete only for work actually performed and at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar service. NCAA rules also prohibit employers from using the name or picture of a student-athlete to directly or indirectly advertise, recommend or promote the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind. Do not provide an honorarium to a student-athlete for a speaking engagement. Compensation may not include any remuneration for value or utility that the student-athlete may have for the employer because of publicity, reputation, fame or personal following that he or she has obtained because of athletics ability.
