Coming back to help coach Adrian’s synchronized skating team is assistant Lindsay Matthews. Matthews was the assistant for the Lady Bulldogs during 2007-2008. Matthews has 22 years of figure skating experience, including eight years on the international synchronized senior level team. She also has been coached by Olympians that include Charles Butler and Joe and Jackie Mero. “Through my many

years of experience as a skater and my time spent coaching, I have acquired a vast knowledge of, and a good critical understanding of figure skating fundamentals and technique,” said Matthews. “I have a very strong work ethic and a true passion, dedication and love for this sport.” Matthews has represented the United States at competitions in Denmark, Italy, Switzerland, Finland, Croatia, and the Czech Republic. In 2004, she skated for Team USA 2 at the World Synchronized Skating Championships held in Croatia. A member of the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) for twenty years, Matthews is the founder and director of the USFSA Basic Skills Program in Adrian. Arrington Ice Arena

Arrington Ice Arena was officially dedicated and opened for business on October 19, 2007 as the men’s varsity hockey team squared off in their inaugural game against Potsdam State. The Bulldogs christened the new facility with a resounding 9-1 win in front of a packed crowd, who were also in attendance to see Lord Stanley’s Cup on loan from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

The facility is home to Adrian College’s men’s and women’s varsity Division III hockey teams as well as the ACHA Division I and III men’s hockey teams and the synchronized skating team.

The arena is named after Dr. Robyn Arrington, Jr. and his brother, fellow Adrian alumnus Col. Harold Arrington. The brothers donated $3 million on behalf of their family. The $5.5 million project is also a place where local residents can use the facility for recreational activities. The operating schedule includes open skates for the community, learn-to-skate programs for children and adults and hockey programs for people of various ages and abilities.

The arena consists of a single sheet of ice, 550 chair-back seats, a media press box, a president’s seating area, concession stand, pro shop with skate rental, offices for ice sports coaches and personnel and locker rooms. For more information about Arrington Ice Arena, visit the website at (www.arringtonicearena.com).

Arrington Ice Arena has already been praised as one of the best hockey venues in Division III. The arena has hosted such events as a Detroit Red Wing Alumni Game and the last three MCHA Harris Cups. In addition, Arrington Ice Arena has played host to the 2010 and 2011 ACHA Division I All-Star Game.

ADRIAN COLLEGEAdrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian.

On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degree-granting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church.

For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus.

Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

In its 2011 edition of America’s “Best Colleges,” U.S. News & World Report ranks Adrian College as one of the top five schools in the Midwest of Regional Colleges to have the least student debt load upon graduation.

This is the third consecutive year that Adrian College has been featured and singled out by U.S. News and World Report. In its 2009 edition of America’s “Best Colleges” and again in 2010, Adrian College received top billing as a school to watch and as the #1 Up-and-Coming School in the Midwest.

“Affordability is the top parental concern that parents express with respect to their child’s education,” said Adrian College President Jeffrey R. Docking. “We’re extremely pleased that U.S. News and World Report ranked us in the top five Midwest colleges that have students graduating with a lower debt.”

Varsity SportDear Prospective Skater:

I am excited to introduce you to the world of synchronized skating here at Adrian College, where we are extremely proud to boast our program as one of only two school sponsored varsity programs in the nation.

The philosophy of Adrian Synchro is simple, yet profound: make the most of every day as an individual, so that we may reap the reward as a team. We’ve been given the staff, the facilities, and the administrative backing to build the foundation of our success, and it is up to us the make the best use of these advantages on a daily basis. We’ve experienced tremendous growth and maturity over the past five years and with the addition of talented and experienced skaters like you, just think of what the next five years could bring.

Not everyone is cut out to be a Bulldog. We look for several key components in each skater and also ask several questions of them. Can you make the commitment? Can you take constructive criticism? Are you willing to do what other teams won’t? Can you put individual successes aside for the common team goal? The pride of Adrian Synchro lies in our will: the strength and courage to be a representative student-athlete who excels both in the classroom and on the ice.

We’re proud to offer a comprehensive package at Adrian that rivals any collegiate program in the country. A fully funded school sponsored program means skating at no cost: most importantly, ice time, training, and travel expenses are free. Our media and technology capability also provide our coaches the ability to individually review each skater to compliment, critique, and improve. Arrington Ice Arena provides synchronized skating its own customized locker room, and is in the process of completing a bar and restaurant that looks over the ice. In addition, you are fully outfitted from head to toe with equipment from the nation’s top companies, like Nike, Jammin, and Del Arbour.

One important question remains: With so many programs to choose from, why opt to be a Bulldog? First and foremost, we truly believe that our facilities, capabilities, and funding are head and shoulders above the rest of the country. Secondly, the first five years are over and it’s time to usher in the next five. It’s a new era for the Adrian College Varsity Synchronized Skating Team: our current skaters know it, our coaches know it, and we need your help in letting the rest of the skating world know it.

Sincerely,

Ashley Teff CarlsonHead Coach of Synchronized SkatingAdrian College
