A CHAMPIONSHIP SEASONExpress finish 2011 as National Runners-upThe Express softball team had the best season in Owens women’s sports history last season as they finished as the NJCAA Division II national runners-up.

Following a school record 33-0 start to the regular season, the Express captured their 10th Ohio Community College Athletic Conference championship.

In the Region XII District G tournament, freshman Allison Hausch ended a classic winner’s bracket final matchup with Kalamazoo Valley with a walk-off home run. The Express then defeated Kalamazoo Valley once again, highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Michelle Hollister and Bridget Wolfe, to capture the district championship and head to nationals.

Sophomore pitcher Jordan Ratliff was named the tournament’s MVP, while Hausch and Alaina Haubert earned all-tournament team honors.

At nationals, the Express opened with two wins and moved into the winner’s bracket semifinals where they fell to No. 1-ranked Louisiana State

University-Eunice. The magical season didn’t end there.

Coming out of the loser’s bracket, the Express defeated East Central 2-0, No. 9 South Mountain 8-7 in a nine-inning thriller and No. 2 Kankakee 13-2 to reach the national title game. However, No. 1 LSU-Eunice awaited the Express and, once again, defeated Owens for the Division II national championship.

It was the first time in Owens athletic history that a women’s team made a national championship game and the fourth appearance overall for an Owens sports team in a national title game. The Express tied the school record for most wins in a season and set a record for fewest losses as they finished 44-5.

Sophomores Lindsey Bandeen and Matea Rice were named to the NJCAA Division II All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Kristen Roznoski set a national tournament record for most at-bats with 29, while also moving into second place for most hits

in a single tournament with 14. Rice fell one putout short of the tournament record, while, as a team, the Express had the second most hits and tied for the most triples.

Roznoski broke school records for most hits (81) and most runs (64) in a season. Haubert set the single season record for doubles with 22. Roznoski, Ratliff, Haubert, Rice, Bandeen and Wolfe were named to the All-OCCAC team, while head coach Duane Lanham was named District G Coach of the Year.

Ratliff was named the OCCAC Pitcher of the Year and Haubert was named the OCCAC Player of the Year, while Roznoski and Haubert were named to the All-Region XII team.

Owens also captured the program’s 400th win since beginning as an official NJCAA sport in the 1998-99 academic year. The Express are now 400-191-1.

STUDENT HEALTH AND ACTIVITIES CENTER

Opened in 2000, the Student Health and Activities Center is the focal point of the athletic program at Owens Community College.

The complex, affectionately known as the SHAC, is one of the finest facilities at the two-year level in the country.

The athletic offices are headquartered in the SHAC, which also includes the individual sport coaches’ offices and basketball/volleyball arena. All student-athletes benefit from a training room, spacious locker rooms and first-rate fitness center, including free weights, machine weights and aerobics center as well as a running track. The SHAC’S multi-purpose intramural courts also are utilized for Express team and individual practices, converting to batting cages for baseball and softball; while also being used for indoor soccer training and the court sports for men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball.

The SHAC has played host to many high profile events, including most recently the 2011 NJCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Championships.

EXPRESS OUTDOOR SPORTS COMPLEX

The Express Outdoor Sports Complex is comprised of the Owens Baseball, Softball and Soccer Fields.

The Baseball Field, with grandstand seating to hold 500, features the following dimensions: 320 feet down the left and right field lines, 365 feet in the power alleys in left- and right-center fields and a measurement of 390 feet to center field. The field has two batting cages. The latest improvements made to the Baseball Field began in 2011 with a new infield mix added and the rebuilding of the bullpen mounds. Owens baseball staff and administrators collaborated with the Toledo Mud Hens head grounds superintendent Jake Tyler and Owens Community College

Turfgrass Management associate professor Chris Foley to improve the sprinkler system and overall maintenance and upkeep.

The Express Softball Field, home of the 2011 National Runner-up Express, also has grandstand seating directly behind home plate for 500 fans. The outfield dimensions are a symmetrical 200 feet at the foul poles and straight-away center field. The Owens Community College grounds staff does an outstanding job of keeping the playing surface in top shape.

The Owens Soccer Field had been the home pitch of just the men’s soccer program until the women’s soccer program played its first official season in 2011. The Soccer Field has played host to a number of OCCAC and regional matches.

All playing fields at the Express Outdoor Sports Complex feature Daktronics scoreboards.

BELMONT COUNTRY CLUB

In nearby Perrysburg, the men’s golf team plays at Belmont Country Club, a private club that features one of the premier championship courses in Ohio.

The Robert Bruce Harris-designed par-72 course is challenging but scenic, with huge greens, fairways lined with mature trees and shrubs, and six holes bordered by picturesque water hazards. The combination fulfills the claim by Harris that there would not be a dull hole on the course.

A canny designer with more than 300 courses to his credit, Harris mixed the holes by length and character for player interest, while giving equal attention to landscaping details. Every hole provided its own vistas.

Later, world-renowned golf course architect Arthur Hills helped Harris make alterations to the course, which measures nearly 7,000 yards for championship tournament play.

DUANE LANHAM HEAD COACH

Duane Lanham is in his ninth season as head coach of the Express softball program.

Last season, Lanham almost brought home the first national title in Owens women’s sports history. The team finished 44-5

overall and as national runner-up after losing to LSU-Eunice in the NJCAA D-II National Championship. The Express started 33-0, won the OCCAC title, the Region XII title, tied the school record for most wins in a season, and finished the regular season ranked eighth in the NJCAA Division II poll. Additionally, the team captured the program’s 400th win in the national semifinal.

In his eight previous years, he has compiled a 257-114 overall record, including an 84-14 record in the OCCAC. Additionally, he has led the team to six OCCAC titles, two Region XII titles and two appearances in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. Aside from last year’s runner-up finish, the team finished fifth at nationals in the 2004-05 season.

Prior to Owens, Lanham had over 20 years of coaching experience at various levels. He served as the varsity girls softball coach at Sylvania Southview High School for six years prior to joining Owens. He also held positions as Sylvania Girls Fast Pitch Summer Traveling Team coach, Sylvania Southview High School Assistant Varsity Girls Softball Coach and as Hawkins Elementary Girls Softball Coach.

During his tenure at Sylvania Southview, Lanham amassed an overall record of 125-69, capturing two Northern Lakes League titles and advancing twice to the Division I regional finals. His accomplishments include receiving two Northern Lakes League Coach of the Year awards. Lanham also is an active member in his community, serving as President of the Sylvania Fast Pitch Softball Association and holds a membership with the Down and Dirty Fast Pitch Softball Association.

In 2010, Lanham was selected to the Northwest Ohio Fast Pitch Hall of Fame.

Lanham attended the University of Toledo and is a graduate of Whitmer High School. He and his wife, Jackie, reside in Sylvania.

KEVIN SNYDER ASSISTANT COACH

Kevin Snyder begins his fifth season as an assistant coach for Express softball program.

He is the team’s hitting instructor, head recruiter and infield coach. Snyder previously served as a volunteer assistant coach from

2005-07. His daughter, Jessica, is a former member of the Express softball program (2006-07).

Snyder currently coaches the SGS Magic 16U summer travel program and is in his fourth year with them. Prior to that, he was the head coach for the Sylvania Sharks Travel Summer Team from 2000-06 and in 2008. The Sylvania resident also was an assistant coach for the JV and varsity girls softball teams at Sylvania Southview High School for three years.

Snyder, a Branch Manager at Charter One Bank, attended the University of Toledo and is a graduate of Toledo Central Catholic High School. He and his wife of 27 years, Sharon, have two children, Jessica and Eric.

SARA FLEMING ASSISTANT COACH

Sara Fleming is entering her first season as an assistant coach for the Express softball program. She will be primarily responsible for coaching the pitchers and catchers.

The Columbus, Miss., native relocated to Toledo in June 2011 and carries an impressive background. She attended New Hope High School, where she played basketball, as well as slow pitch and fast pitch softball. She was a member of the 1997 and 2000 state softball championship teams at New Hope.

After high school, Fleming attended East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Miss., from 2001-03. She was a pitcher for the Lady Lions softball team and earned All-State honors. She was a Special Honors graduate with an associate’s degree in psychology.

Following her time at East Mississippi Community College, Fleming pitched for Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., from 2004-05. She

earned All-Conference honors, was named pitcher of the week in the conference twice, and was named an Academic All-American with the Lady Majors. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology.

Following the end of her softball career, Fleming attended William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Miss., and graduated with a Master’s of Science in Counseling Psychology.

She returned to softball as an assistant coach at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College from 2009-11. In 2009, the team was NJCAA Region 23 champion and appeared in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. In 2010, the team was NJCAA Region 23 Runner-up and made an appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament. Then, in 2011, the team was MACJC South State Champions and State Runner-Up.

Sara is the daughter of Walter Fleming and Kathi Coleman. She is currently employed by Harbor Corporation in Toledo working with children that have behavioral disorders.

RETURNING PLAYERS

Major: Pre-Dental Hygiene

2010-2011: Barron started eight games for the Express last year as the back up to Matea Rice at first base and also saw action as a pinch runner. She finished with a .357 batting average while playing in 27 games. In 28 at-bats, Barron accumulated 15 runs, nine RBI, two doubles, four walks, five stolen bases, three hit by pitches and three sacrifice bunts. Her top game was a 3-for-3 performance against Grand Rapids on April 21 when she had two runs and two RBIs. She only struck out once all season. Defensively, she made 74 put outs at first base with one assist and zero errors. Her greatest personal sports thrill was last year’s national runner-up performance for the Express softball team.

Prior to Owens: At Jefferson, Barron was a four-year varsity player in softball and three year varsity athlete in basketball. In basketball, she was named Second Team All-Huron League. In softball, under the tutelage of Jeff Barron, she was First Team All-Huron League, First Team All-District, and First Team All-Region her senior year, while being named Honorable Mention All-District her junior year. In addition, she received the four-year varsity award. Barron was named to the Academic All-Huron League team, and she lists her greatest personal high school sports thrill as beating Jefferson’s rival, Milan, in a 14 inning game.

2010-2011: Redinger started 21 games last season at the catcher and designated player positions, including two games in the national tournament, where she had two hits, two walks and an RBI. Overall, Redinger hit .364 in 28 games played with 20 hits, 11 runs, 12 RBI, two doubles, one triple, eight walks, one stolen base and seven sacrifice bunts in 55 at bats. She had a 3-for-3 performance twice and a three RBI performance once. Defensively, she made 36 putouts and two assists with only one error.

Prior to Owens: Redinger was a three-sport athlete at Fremont Ross (softball, volleyball and basketball) and helped lead her softball team to a Greater Buckeye Conference championship her senior year. During the game that determined the championship, Redinger was playing at short when she dived for a ball and made the final out with the bases loaded, which she lists as her greatest sports thrill. For her play, she earned the GBC leadership award and Honorable Mention All-GBC during her softball career. She also played for the Huron Waves travel team where she won team MVP in the summer before her senior year. 2010-2011: Hausch had the third best batting average on the team last season (.448) and the highest among freshmen. Additionally, she had a penchant for big plays as she hit a walk off inside the park home run to the opposite field against Lorain County on March 30 and a walk off solo home run in extra innings that sent the Express to the regional championship game against Kalamazoo Valley, which she lists as her greatest personal sports thrill and helped her earn All-Region XII Tournament Team honors. Overall, Hausch saw action in 34 games and started 25 of them at catcher and designated player. The righty had 30 hits, 14 runs, 21 RBI, nine doubles, two home runs, five walks, one stolen base, and four sacrifice bunts. Defensively, she had 37 put outs and no errors. She was behind the plate for Ashlyn Michalak’s 10 strikeout perfect game on March 9.

Prior to Owens: Hausch played softball and tennis at Bryan, where she won the Umpire’s Award her senior year in softball and twice (2008, 2009) won most improved player in tennis. She played softball for coach Craig Polter.

2010-2011: Thompson started four games at second base, while seeing action in 22 games overall due to her pinch running ability. Overall, she hit .333 in 18 at-bats with 10 runs, seven RBI, three doubles, two walks, four stolen bases, and one hit by pitch with only two strikeouts. Defensively, she made nine assists and seven putouts with only one error. Her best game offensively came against C.C. of Beaver County when she went 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and a double. In one at-bat during the national tournament, she delivered an RBI groundout.

Prior to Owens: Thompson was First Team All-Toledo City League and a captain her senior season at Clay where she hit .333 with 27 hits and 16 RBIs for coach Brenda Radabaugh. She was Second Team All-Toledo City League her sophomore and junior seasons. As a member of the soccer team, she was Second Team All-City League and a team captain her junior and senior seasons. As a senior, she was also named Second Team All-District, while earning Honorable Mention All-City League her sophomore year. She lists making it to the softball regional finals her junior year as her greatest personal sports thrill. She also played basketball. Academically, Thompson finished in the top 20 percent of her class and was an honor roll student each of her four years. She was also in National Honor Society and a member of the DECA marketing program.

2010-2011: In her first collegiate game, Michalak delivered a five inning, 10 strikeout perfect game against C.C. of Beaver County. She didn’t lose a game until May 8 and finished the year 11-1 with a 2.59 ERA and one save in 15 appearances. Additionally, Michalak allowed more than two runs in a game only once while striking out 77 and allowing only 52 hits in 59 innings pitched. Other stats included 22 runs (17 earned), 10 walks, 10 doubles and three home runs allowed. She pitched the Express to the national championship game with a complete game victory in the national semifinal against Kankakee. Defensively, she made five assists and one putout for the season.

Prior to Owens: Michalak came to Owens after a decorated career at Springfield, where she helped lead Springfield to a Northern Lakes League title her sophomore and junior year, a district championship her sophomore and senior year, and a regional championship her senior year playing for coach Rob Gwozdz. Personal accolades followed as Michalak, who also participated in cheerleading, was named First Team All-District, First Team All-Northern Lakes League and team MVP her senior year. As a junior, she was named First Team All-Ohio, First Team All-District and was the team’s Coaches Award recipient. As a sophomore, Michalak was named First Team All-District and First Team All-NLL. As a freshman, Michalak was named Second Team All-District and Second Team All-NLL. She lists winning regionals and pitching in the Ohio Division I state final four as her greatest personal sports thrill.

She saw action in relief during the national championship game against LSU-Eunice. Defensively, she made 13 assists and one putout in the circle with no errors.

Prior to Owens: Graham, an honor roll student, came to Owens following a two-sport career (softball and golf) at Clay, where she was named First Team All-City League and First Team All-District her senior year in softball under the tutelage of coach Brenda Radabaugh. As a junior, she was a Second Team All-Ohio selection, while helping lead her team to a regional final berth, which she lists as her greatest personal sports thrill. Along with her Express teammate Hallie Thompson, Graham helped lead Clay to a Toledo City League championship her senior year, where she started 18 games, went 15-3, pitched 135.1 innings, allowed only 23 earned runs, struck out 139 and finished with a 1.19 ERA.

2010-2011: Hollister started 47 of 49 games for the Express last season from the second base position. She finished with a .378 batting average in 111 at-bats. Additional stats include 42 hits, 27 runs, 39 RBI, 15 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 11 walks, six stolen bases, nine sacrifice bunts, and one sacrifice fly. She only struck out 12 times. Defensively, she had 69 put outs and 83 assists. Offensively, her best game came against Lorain County on April 13 when she went 2-for-3 with two runs, five RBI, one double and one home run. In the regional championship game against Kalamazoo Valley, Hollister hit a home run that helped the Express move on to nationals. In the national tournament, she went 7-for-22 (.318) with four runs, seven RBI, one double and one home run. Her greatest personal sports thrill was the team’s national runner-up finish.

Prior to Owens: Hollister was a three-sport athlete (softball, basketball and volleyball) at Airport. She was named Most Improved in basketball, while receiving the Coaches Award and First Team All-Huron League honors in volleyball. Hollister was a three-time First Team All-Huron League and All-District player in softball, while earning First Team All-Region her senior season under the direction of coach John Warren. Additionally, she was the team’s offensive and defensive player of the year. As a junior, she was Second Team All-BVC, BVC All-Academic and the team’s defensive player of the year. As a sophomore, she was Second Team All-BVC, the team’s defensive player of the year and BVC All-Academic. As a freshman, she was the team’s offensive player of the year, Second Team All-BVC, Second Team All-District and BVC All-Academic. Shank also played four years of basketball and was the school’s valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA.

per game. While also averaging 7.8 rebounds per game, Hall was named Second Team All-OCCAC. Her 472 points was the 11th highest single season total in the program’s history. Additionally, Hall had a penchant for big plays as she hit the game-winning three against Delta College on Nov. 6 and the game-winning layup with five seconds left against St. Clair County on Nov. 30.

Prior to Owens: As a Fostoria High School basketball player, Hall was named First Team All-Ohio as a senior and Second Team All-Ohio as a junior, First Team All-Northwest District her sophomore through senior seasons, and First Team All-Northern Ohio League all four years. She led the NOL in scoring and rebounding her senior season with averages of 21.4 points and 12.8 rebounds. She finished as the school’s all-time leading scorer (boys and girls) and rebounder. Hall ran track as a freshman and then played softball her final three years with the Redmen. In softball, she was named First Team All-Ohio and First Team All-Northwest District as a senior, Second Team All-Northwest District as a junior and Honorable Mention All-Northwest District as a sophomore.

Personal: Aja is the daughter of Jonathan and Ava Hall. She is the cousin of former Express basketball standout Tia Simms, and her uncle is Damon Moore, a former defensive back at Ohio State and in the NFL for the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles.

Sheets also earned Second Team All-District honors her freshman year. Team awards included winning the team’s Offensive Player of the Year award her freshman year and the All-Around Player of the Year award her sophomore, junior and senior years playing for head coach Janet Sheets. Aside from pitching, Sheets finished sixth in her conference in hitting her junior year with a .480 batting average, fourth in on base percentage (.594), and second in RBIs (33). Her greatest personal sports thrill was winning the Super World Series in a 12 and under league.
