OVERVIEW
The 2012-13 Express women’s soccer team finished 13-2-3 overall. Within that, the team had a 10-0-2 record in Region XII. They advanced to the Region XII
tournament semifinals before falling 1-0 to Muskegon Community College.
With that 10-0-2 record, the Express captured the regular season Region XII championship. Along the way, the program earned their first NJCAA D-I ranking during the season, reaching as high as No. 14. The team also produced five shut-
outs in the season’s first six games and finished the year with 11 shutouts.
Kendra Eitniear completed a historic season and career. She became the pro-gram’s first NJCAA D-I All-American (Honorable Mention) and passed Marissa Szabo to become the program’s all-time scoring leader. She finished her two-year
career with 32 goals, 12 assists and 76 points. Following the season, Eitniear was named the Owens Female Athlete of the Year, First Team All-Region XII and
Region XII Player of the Year.
Along with Eitniear, sophomore Drew Plummer signed with Tiffin University fol-lowing the season. She scored the team’s first goal of the season and finished third
on the team in scoring.
Sophomores Kristina-Marie Rutherford and Haley Gasser were injured early in the season and medically redshirted. The team battled numerous injuries throughout the year as Taylor Avers suffered a season-ending injury midway
through the year, Melanie Gregory was oft-injured, Samantha Starkey and Jes-sica Grindle missed time due to injuries and Kendra Eitniear left the Region XII
semifinal at halftime after suffering an injury.

Freshmen StandoutsJill Burkholder, Erika Brinkman and Marissa Ramirez each did their part to make their presence known during their freshmen campaigns.
Burkholder finished second on the team in scoring and first in assists. She totaled eight goals and nine assists.
Brinkman, the team’s starting goal-keeper, and Ramirez, a starting defender, helped lead the Express defense to 11 shutouts. She earned NJCAA D-I goal-keeper of the week honors on Oct. 14. Academic ExcellenceTaylor Avers, Haley Kreger, Marissa Ramirez and Sarah Weaver made the All-OCCAC Academic Team.
First Poll EntryThe Express women’s soccer team entered the NJCAA D-I poll at No. 16 on Oct. 14. It was their first ranking in program history. They vaulted to as high as No. 14.
All-Region XII HonorsKendra Eitniear, Jill Burkholder, Marissa Ramirez and Drew Plummer earned All-Region XII honors, while Eitniear was named Region XII Player of the Year. Region XII Tournament HonorsJaime Sesock and Jill Burkholder were named to the All-Region XII tournament team.
Unbeaten StreakThe team produced a 14-match unbeaten streak heading into the Region XII tournament loss to Muskegon. They lost only one match prior to that - 3-0 to No. 6 Monroe Community College on Sept. 1.
Team AwardsJill Burkholder was named the team’s MVP, while Marissa Ramirez was given the team’s Coaches Award. Defensive ExcellenceThe team produced 11 shutouts and only gave up 11 goals during the season. The Duo Stays TogetherKendra Eitniear and Drew Plummer both signed with Tiffin University, an NCAA D-II school, following the season. Region XII Regular SeasonThe Express women’s soccer team cap-tured the Region XII regular season title with a 10-0-2 record. They earned the No. 1 seed at the Region XII tournament. Weaver and SesockSophomore standouts Sarah Weaver and Jaime Sesock completed solid two-year
careers. Weaver finished her career with nine goals and six assists. She had six goals as a sophomore and finished fifth on the team in scoring. Sesock finished her ca-reer with seven goals and 10 assists. She finished fifth on the team last year with three goals and six assists. Injuries, RedshirtsSeven players missed time last season due to injury, including three that suffered season-ending injuries. Two of those three, Haley Gasser and Kristina-Marie Rutherford, were injured early enough to receive medical redshirts.
The Rain GameThe Express battled rival Delta College on Sept. 22. The game featured a heavy downpour throughout and a lightning delay in the second half, but the Express captured a 2-1 victory.

Eitniear’s ImpactKendra Eitniear left the program with 32 goals and 11 assists over the past two years.
She left as the program’s leading career scorer, the Region XII player of the Year and the program’s first NJCAA All-Amer-ican.

Head Coach - 3rd SeasonMARY WHISLER
Mary Whisler is in her third season as head coach of the Express women’s soccer program. She became the first head coach in the program’s history in June 2011.
This past season, Whisler led the Express to a 13-2-3 record overall, including a 10-0-2 record in Region XII play, which helped them earn the #1 seed in the Region XII postseason tournament. Their season ended with a 1-0 loss to Muskegon CC in the Re-gion XII semifinals.
Following the season, four of her players earned All-Region XII hon-ors including First Team recipients
Kendra Eitniear and Jill Burkhold-er, and Second Team recipients Ma-rissa Ramirez and Drew Plummer.
In her two years, Whisler has record-ed a 25-10-3 record as head coach, which has included two appearances in the Region XII postseason tourna-ment. She has placed three players on the All-Region XII First Team and four players on the All-Region XII Second Team.
Academically, four of Whisler’s play-ers made the All-OCCAC Academic Team in 2012. She has also sent two players to four-year schools/univer-sities (Kendra Eitniear and Drew Plummer, Tiffin University).
Whisler previously served as the as-sistant coach for women’s soccer at the University of Findlay from 2009-11. During her tenure at the University of Findlay, she helped lead the program to an overall 14-18-5 re-cord. Whisler’s responsibilities also included recruiting, training and as-sessing talent.
Additionally, she serves as coach to two U-11 Pacesetter Soccer Club teams and previously coached for Findlay Soccer Club, as well as, the U-16 Assistant Coach for the Fort
Wayne Sport Club in Fort Wayne, Ind. Whisler also spends her sum-mer working as a Soccer Camp Staff Coach at the University of Notre Dame.
Whisler was a three-time First Team Mid-Central College Conference se-lection during her intercollegiate women’s soccer career (2005-08) at the University of Saint Francis. She also earned NAIA Honorable Men-tion Athletic All-American and Schol-ar-Athlete All-American honors.
The Toledo resident holds a bach-elor’s degree in psychology from the University of Saint Francis and a Master’s degree in education from the University of Findlay. She holds her USSF ‘D’ License and recently received her NSCAA National Diplo-ma, as well.

Assistant Coach - 1st SeasonStacey Lucas
Caitlyn Theaker is in her second season as an assis-tant coach in the Express women's soccer program.
She helped lead the Express to a 13-2-3 overall re-cord in her first year.
Theaker came to Owens after four years with the Findlay University women's soccer team. While there, Theaker was named to the GLIAC All-Academ-ic team her senior year and was the assistant coach for Findlay Soccer Club. She graduated in 2012 with an associates of personal training and a bachelors of strength and conditioning.
Prior to that, Theaker went to Maumee HS, where she twice qualified for the state championship in cross country.
Stacey Lucas is in her first year as an assistant women's soccer coach at Owens Community College.
Lucas, who played at Bowling Green State University from 2006-09, is also the head coach of the U-12 Red at Pacesetter Soccer Club.
While at BGSU, Lucas had eight goals and five assists during her career which saw her start 41 games. She played in 81 of BGSU's 84 games during her career. She graduated with a bachelor's in education from BGSU.
Later, Lucas earned a master's in education from West-ern Governor's University.
Lucas is a graduate of Huber Heights Wayne High School, where she was a two-time Third Team All-Ohio selection and the Greater Western Ohio Conference Player of the Year in 2005. She had 81 career goals, including 33 as a senior, while producing 32 career as-sists.
Lucas holds an NSCAA National Diploma. She current-ly teaches at Summit Academy in Toledo.

2012 Brinkman started 17 games in goal for the Express as a freshman, while
seeing action in 18. She made 73 saves while allowing only 11 goals. As a team, she was a big part of 10 shutouts produced by the Express defense. She
was also named an NJCAA D-I Goalkeeper of the Week.
Prior to OwensBrinkman was named Honorable Mention All-Putnam County League (PCL) her senior year. She led Kalida to the district championship game, where they lost a 1-0 (2 OT) heartbreaker to Lima Central Catholic, and she only
allowed two goals in three games during the district tournament. She played for coach David Kehris.
PersonalErika is the daughter of Ryan and Amy Brinkman. She has three siblings
- Amanda, Becca and Bryce.

2012 Burkholder nearly led the team in scoring as she finished second with 25 points on eight goals and nine assists. Her assist total was a team-high, while her goal total was second on the team. She tied a single game pro-gram record with three assists against Mercyhurst North East on Sept. 2. She started all 18 games for the Express and was named First Team All-
Region XII following the season.
Prior to OwensBurkholder, a four-year letterwinner in soccer, was a First Team All-
NWOAL selection as a senior. As a junior, she was First Team All-District, Second Team All-Ohio, and the team’s offensive MVP. Also an NSCAA All-Region selection, she was a big part of Bryan’s seven consecutive sectional
titles. She played for coach Jeffe Wildenburg.

2012 Preble started 16 of 18 games as a freshman while helping to anchor the
Express defense that produced 10 shutouts. She did not record a goal or assist.
Prior to OwensPreble was a four-year starter at Lake for coach Steve Hoffman, and she was a First Team All-Suburban Lakes League selection her sophomore through senior seasons, as well as a Second Team All-District selection as a sophomore and an Honorable Mention All-District selection as a senior. More-
over, she helped lead her team to a district semifinal as a senior, a regional final as a junior, and a regional semifinal as a sophomore.
PersonalTara is the daughter of Duane and Denise Preble. She has one brother,
Dustin.

2012 Kreger scored three goals and added one assist for the Express while
starting 17 of 18 games as a freshman.
Prior to OwensKreger was a two-time team captain at Bedford HS. During her senior
year, she was named All-District and won the SEC Sportsmanship Award and the Outstanding Athlete Award. She also won the SEC Sportsmanship
Award as a junior. Academically, she graduated with a 3.5 GPA.
PersonalHaley is the daughter of John and Sharon Kreger. She has one sister, Jes-
sica.

2012 Avers started the first 12 games for the Express before suffering a season ending injury against Schoolcraft College on Oct. 3. In that time, she had one goal and one assist, while her one goal was the game winner in a 1-0 win
over Schoolcraft College on Aug. 29.
Prior to OwensAvers was named the player of the year in the inaugural season of the
Northern Buckeye Conference as a senior. As a junior, she was named the co-player of the year in the Suburban Lakes League. Playing for head
coach Malcolm Edge, she registered 65 goals during her final two seasons and 76 goals in her four year career, with the latter being a school record. She was a team captain as a senior while winning First Team All-NBC
honors as a senior and First Team All-SLL honors as a junior. Academically, she was an honor roll student.
PersonalTaylor is the daughter of Tom and Lori Avers. She has four siblings, Brent,
Danielle, Brock and Ryan.

2012 After suffering an injury in the season’s second game on Aug. 29, Grindle returned to action on Sept. 28 against Indiana Tech JV. In only 10 games
(nine starts), she produced six goals and three assists, which put her fourth on the team in scoring. She should be an integral part of the Express
offense as a sophomore.
Prior to OwensGrindle was named the NWOSSL district player of the year as a senior, as well as First Team All-NWOSSL, First Team All-Northwest District and
OSSCA Second Team All-Ohio. She played for head coach Monte Bandeen at Northwood.

Owens Career Following a breakout freshman year, Gasser suffered a season ending injury in the sea-son’s second game of last year and ended up redshirting. She had one assist in the team’s season opening win over Cincinnati State to push her career total to 16. This after she was a huge contributor to the Express offense in 2011 as she finished with seven goals and 15 as-sists. She finished third on the team in scoring (29 points) and first in assists. She had three games in which she totaled two assists. Gasser was the team’s Coaches Award recipient.
Prior to OwensGasser was a Second Team All-District selection her senior year and an Honorable Mention
All-Northern Lakes League selection in 2009 for head coach Rick Burgin. Her greatest personal sports thrill is making the regional tournament in soccer during her sophomore and junior years. She ran track as a freshman and sophomore and participated in the BCSN
All-Star game for soccer.

school record for most in a season. During her time at Maumee, she earned First Team All-Northern Lakes League, Second Team All-Northern Lakes
League, First Team All-District and Second Team All-District honors. Theaker was a three year varsity member in soccer, a two year varsity member in track and basketball, and a one year varsity member in cross
country. She played for coach Steve Kikolski in soccer.

touches/takeaways and attempted 374 shots in her career.
In terms of awards, Burnette was Second Team All-Sandusky Bay Confer-ence (SBC) and Second Team All-District as a senior. During her junior year,
she was Honorable Mention All-SBC and Honorable Mention All-District. She was also Honorable Mention All-SBC as a sophomore.
Her team was a four-time SBC champion, three-time sectional champion and a two-time district runner-up. She helped her team capture 48 straight
league wins at one point during her career.

Her team finished 9-7-2 overall and advanced to the district semifinals. During the season, she played in all 18 matches, recorded three goals, three assists
and one game-winning assist.
As a junior, she was Honorable Mention All-SEC while playing in 22 of 23 matches. She recorded two goals and one assist while helping the team fin-ish 12-9-2. She sat out her sophomore year due to an injury, but her team finished 15-6-1. She served as the team manager while the team had their
best record in program history and recorded the first two state playoff victories in program history.

Prior to OwensPowell was a three-sports athlete at Onsted High School. In soccer, she was a member of seven indoor and outdoor travel soccer championship teams
with Real FC from 2006-12. Her high school soccer coach was Sally Skeels.
In track, she was an All-Michigan selection in 2010-11 and 2011-12 and a member of the 2010-11 state championship team in the 4 x 400 meter relay. She was also part of the 4 x 800 meter relay team that finished sixth the
same year.
Additionally, she was a member of the very successful Onsted girls basket-ball team. The program won back-to-back Lenawee County Athletic Asso-
ciation (LCAA) league championships.
